ABSTRACT

Thyroid hormones serum concentration alters in a variety of nonthyroidal illnesses. Thyroxine and triiodothyronine levels in patients after ischaemic stroke are significantly lower and reverse-triiodothyronine (rT3) and triiodothyronine uptake index (T3I) are considerably higher. At the beginning of insultus rT3 and T3I can be used as the markers of fatal prognosis.

ABSTRACT

The development of changes in the protein spectrum of the rabbit optic nerve undergoing Wallerian degeneration was studied and compared with the time sequence of the previously established changes occurring in the lipid composition of the degenerating nerve. The myelin protein spectrum remained essentially unchanged till 32 days after enucleation to show a decrease of the relative content of basic myelin proteins accompanied by increased percentages of the Wolfgram protein during the forthcoming development of Wallerian degeneration. The occurrence of changes in the myelin protein spectrum was significantly delayed in comparison with the onset of enhanced esterification of myelin cholesterol, and thus the latter process, and not the hydrolysis of basic protein is considered as an early event, weakening the molecular structure of the myelin membrane that might initiate the demyelinating process.

ABSTRACT

Myelin proteins isolated from the brain of Wistar rats intoxicated chronically with triethyltin sulfate (TET) according to the technique of ETO et al. (1971) were investigated. Among the various protein fractions, the Agraval protein happened to be most evidently affected, demonstrating considerably reduced percentages. However the results did not prove that any of the individual myelin proteins was specifically affected by TET intake. The interesting point in chronic TET poisoning was that some clinical symptoms as well as disturbances in myelin proteins demonstrated a clear tendency to retrogression despite of the continued intoxication. These observations indicate obviously that during chronic TET intake, some kind of biochemical adaptation to the noxious action of the poison on the myelin sheath takes place.

ABSTRACT

Pregnant mice at the 15th day of gestation were injected with a single intravenous dose of ENU/80 mg/kg of body weight). The protein composition of the myelin fraction isolated by means of differential centrifugation from brains of the offsprings was studied. The results obtained lead to the following conclusions: 1. The myelin protein spectrum of transplacentally intoxicated animals aged 40 days postnatal, shows decreased percentages of the Wolfgram protein and of the low molecular weight basic protein, whereas the proportions of the high molecular weight component of the myelin basic protein as well that of the Agrawal's protein are elevated. 2. The alterations in the profile of myelin proteins obtained from experimental mice aged 70 days postnatal are less severe and consist in a decline of the percentage of Wolfgrams protein and elevation of the Agrawal's protein content. 3. The intraplacental intoxication of mouse fetuses leads to development of animals defective with respect to the protein composition of the central myelin.

ABSTRACT

The methods of cerebrospinal fluid electrophoresis used as yet are surveyed briefly with particular reference to the method using polyacrylamide gel. In the light of own results it has been found that the method is superior because only small amounts of material are required and the sensitivity and separating ability of the method are much higher.
