ABSTRACT

The objective of this study was to evaluate protease supplementation in low-protein diets containing feather meal (FP) on the performance and carcass yield of meat-type quails. Twenty male quails were used in a completely randomized design, in a 2 x 3 factorial scheme (with and without protease x 3 FP levels (0, 5 and 10%)), totaling six treatments (Reduced diet (RD) in 8 % of the requirement of crude protein and amino acids + 0% FP; RD + 5% FP; RD + 10% FP; RD + 0% FP + protease; RD + 5% FP + protease and RD + 10% FP + protease), four replicates of 10 quails per plot, in the phases of 8-21 days and 8-35 days of age. Interaction (P≤0.05) was observed between FP and protease levels on weight gain over the period of 8-21 days. The levels of FP influenced (P≤0.05) the feed intake and the weight gain of 8-21 and 8-35 and the feed conversion ratio of 8-21 days. There was interaction (P≤0.05) between protease supplementation and FP inclusion for body weight at 35 days. It is concluded that FP can be used up to 5% in diets for meat-type quails without protease supplementation.(AU)

ABSTRACT

The objective was to evaluate the digestive tract characteristics, metabolizability and nutrient retention of broilers fed diets supplemented with enzyme complex (EC). To evaluate the characteristics of the digestive tract 600 female Cobb 500 birds were used, distributed in a completely randomized design, with 5 inclusion levels of the EC (0; 100, 200, 300 and 400 g/ton) and 6 replicates of 20 birds each. To evaluate the metabolizability and the retention of nutrients 200 female Cobb 500 birds at 15 days of age were used, distributed in a completely randomized design with 5 levels of supplementation of the EC and 4 replicates of 10 birds each. No significant effects (P>0.05) were observed for the supplementation of the EC in the intestinal pH, digestive organ weight, intestinal length and metabolizable coefficients of dry matter and crude protein. The metabolizable coefficient of ethereal extract was influenced in a quadratic decreasing form (P<0.01). The metabolizable coefficients of calcium (Ca) and phosphorus (P) were influenced in a quadratic increase (P<0.01), resulting in increased Ca retention in 21.39% and P in 9.56%. Supplementation of the EC in broiler diets improves the metabolizability and retention of P and Ca, without affecting the other parameters evaluated.(AU)

ABSTRACT

Diarrhoeagenic Escherichia coli (DEC) is a leading cause of infectious diarrhoea worldwide. In recent years, Escherichia albertii has also been implicated as a cause of human enteric diseases. This study describes the occurrence of E. coli pathotypes and serotypes associated with enteric illness and haemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) isolated in Brazil from 2011 to 2016. Pathotypes isolated included enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC), enteroaggregative E. coli (EAEC), enterotoxigenic E. coli (ETEC), enteroinvasive E. coli (EIEC) and Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC). PCR of stool enrichments for DEC pathotypes was employed, and E. albertii was also sought. O:H serotyping was performed on all DEC isolates. A total of 683 DEC and 10 E. albertii strains were isolated from 5047 clinical samples. The frequencies of DEC pathotypes were 52.6% (359/683) for EPEC, 32.5% for EAEC, 6.3% for ETEC, 4.4% for EIEC and 4.2% for STEC. DEC strains occurred in patients from 3 months to 96 years old, but EPEC, EAEC and STEC were most prevalent among children. Both typical and atypical isolates of EPEC and EAEC were recovered and presented great serotype heterogeneity. HUS cases were only associated with STEC serotype O157:H7. Two E. albertii isolates belonged to serogroup O113 and one had the stx2f gene. The higher prevalence of atypical EPEC in relation to EAEC in community-acquired diarrhoea in Brazil suggests a shift in the trend of DEC pathotypes circulation as previously EAEC predominated. This is the first report of E. albertii isolation from active surveillance. These results highlight the need of continuing DEC and E. albertii surveillance, as a mean to detect changes in the pattern of pathotypes and serotypes circulation and provide useful information for intervention and control strategies.

ABSTRACT

AIM: To evaluate apical transportation and centring ability during root canal preparation in mesial root canals of mandibular molars associated with ProTaper Gold (PTG), ProDesign S (PDS), Hyflex CM (HCM), Hyflex EDM and ProDesign Logic (PDL). METHODOLOGY: Sixty mandibular first molars with two separate canals in the mesial root were selected after root anatomy pairing by microcomputed tomography (microCT). The teeth were randomly divided into five groups (n = 24); the root canal volume was calculated to ensure sample homogeneity. All the root canals were prepared up to size 25 in accordance with the instructions of each rotary system manufacturer. After root canal preparation, the teeth were scanned by microCT to analyse apical transportation, root canal centralization and the pre- and post-preparation root canal volume at the apical and cervical levels. Kruskal-Wallis and Dunn tests were used for comparisons amongst groups for transportation values. For volume changes, the parametric ANOVA and Tukey's tests were used RESULTS: There were no significant differences in apical transportation amongst the rotary systems (P > 0.05). All the systems created apical transportation; values ranging from 0.031 mm (PDL) to 0.072 mm (PTG), and enlargements between 39% (HCM) and 91.1% (PDS) were observed. In relative to cervical transportation, significant differences were observed amongst the systems (P < 0.05). Mean transportation values between 0.07 mm (HCM) and 0.172 mm (PTG) were found, with enlargements between 35.4% (HCM) and 51.5% (PDS). CONCLUSION: All the thermally treated systems resulted in similar apical transportation. In the cervical region, the Hyflex CM and Prodesign Logic systems were associated with more centred preparations.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

This experiment was conducted to determine the requirements of digestible lysine in male and female free-range broiler chickens (Redbro lineage) during the growth phase. Six hundred and thirty broiler chickens were allocated in 30 pens with access to the pasture area. The experimental design was completely randomized in a 5x2 (lysine and gender) factorial arrangement with 3 repetitions with 21 chickens each. The levels of digestible lysine evaluated were: 7.07, 8.07, 9.07, 10.07 and 11.07g/kg. The performance traits evaluated were lysine intake, feed intake, weight gain and feed conversion ratio. An interaction effect (P<0.05) was observed between dietary lysine level and gender for body weight gain. There was an effect (P<0.01) of the levels of lysine on lysine intake, body weight gain and feed conversion ratio. It was found that all the variables were affected (P<0.05) for the gender of chickens. We recommended 10.08 and 9.49 g of digestible lysine/kg diet, corresponding to the estimated intake of 21 and 20g of lysine, for males and females, respectively, for better body weight gain of chickens. For better feed conversion ratio, the recommendation is of 9.61 g of lysine/kg of diets, for chickens of both genders, corresponding to the estimated intake of 20g of lysine.(AU)

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to classify non-linear models used to describe the growth curve of broilers using the cluster analysis technique, taking into account the results of different measures of quality adjustment regression. For this purpose, we used data of body weight and age the following genetic groups of broilers: Cobb500, Hubbard Flex and Ross308, of both sexes, thus constituting six classes. Ten non-linear models were fitted, the quality of fit was measured by the adjusted coefficient of determination, Akaike information criteria and Bayesian, mean square error and index asymptotic. Cluster analysis indicated the Logistico, Michaelis Menten, Michaelis Menten Modificado and von Bertalanffy models as the most appropriate description of the growth curves for the six classes studied.

ABSTRACT

This work aimed to adjust nonlinear models to describe the growth pattern of meat type and posture quail genotypes from hatch to 35 days of age. A total of 1280 male and female quails from EV1, EV2, UFV1, UFV2, UFV3, LF1 and LF2 and Posture genotypes were weighed every seven days, from hatch to 35 days of age. Brody, Gompertz, Logistic, von Bertalanffy and Richards models were used to fit the growth of the genetic groups. Statistical analyses were performed using PROC NLIN of SAS (Statistical Analysis System, version 9.0). The criteria used to select the model showing the best goodness of fit to the growth of the genotypes were: Adjusted Coefficient of Determination (R2), Asymptotic Standard Deviation (DPA), Absolut Mean Deviation (DMA), Asymptotic Index (AI), Bayesian Information Criterion (BIC), Akaike Information Criterion (AIC) and Errors Mean Square (MSE). All nonlinear models converged for the studied genotypes, except Richard the model for the Posture genotype. In general, the estimated parameters for the growth curve using nonlinear models suggested higher precocity for the Posture genotype in comparison to meat type genotypes. The Richard model overestimates the inflection point for all genotypes, except for the Posture genotype. The Gompertz, Logistic and von Bertalanffy are recommended to describe the growth patterns of the studied quail genetic groups. The Brody model did not converge and is not recommended to describe the genetic growth of the studied groups.

ABSTRACT

This study was carried out to compare and relate the performance and carcass traits of different quail genotypes from hatch to 35 days of age. A total of 1176 one-day-old quails of both sexes were allotted in a completely randomized experimental design, in a 7x2 factorial scheme (genotypes x sexes), in seven replicates with 12 quails per experimental unit. Quails of each genotype were weighed weekly from hatch to 35 days of age. At 35 days of age two males and two females of each genotype and replicate were sampled and slaughtered to evaluate carcass weight and main cut yield. Statistical analyses were performed by GLM and CORR procedure from the Statistical Analysis System (SAS, 2000, version 9.0), with the MANOVA option of the SAS device to assess the differences between the genotypes and the correlation between variables. There was no interaction (P≥0.05) between genotype and sex with the performance characteristics of weight and weight gain. However, there was a significant effect of genotype x sex (P<0.05) for the characteristics carcass, breast, thigh and drumstick weights. In general, quails of genetic groups UFV1, UFV2 and UFV3 were heavier from 7 to 35 days of age. We observed that for the correlation the tendency is that quail that showed higher body weight and weight gain will have greater housing and main cuts weight.(AU)

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to assess egg laying and egg quality in quail lines in diallel crosses. We evaluated 16 genetic groups obtained from crosses of four strains of meat quails (L1, L2, L3, and L4) in a complete diallel. We assessed weekly egg number (WEN), egg yield (EY), egg weight (EW), and Haugh unit (HU) for: 51-80, 81-110, 111-140, and 51-140 days (whole period) old. The general combining capacity (GCC) showed significance for WEN and EY, with the exception of the period of 111-140 days. In general, L3 had the highest positive GCC estimates. The additive genetic variability was significant for EW in all periods, as was HU, with the exception of the first period. The specific combining capacity was significant for HU, except in the second period. The largest estimates for GCC were submitted by L1 for EW, followed by L4, considering the whole period. For HU, L2 had the highest estimates for GCC. The more favorable cross for HU was L2xL3, in the whole period. In the third period, there was a significant reciprocal effect, where there was a positive estimate for the cross L2xL3.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to evaluate the performance characteristics and carcass of seven genotypes of alternative strains of Redbro broiler chickens. We used 840 day old male chicks, distributed in a completely randomized design, with the following Redbro strain genotypes: Caboclo, Carijó, Colorpak, Gigante Negro, Pesadão Vermelho, Pescoço Pelado and Tricolor. The broilers were housed in 28 boxes, 30 broilers per pen in masonry shed with access to a 45 square meter paddock, with four replications. The performance characteristics (feed conversion, average daily weight gain, average daily feed intake) were evaluated in the following periods: 1 to 28, 1 to 56, 1 to 70 and 1 to 85 days of age. Body weight was measured at 28, 56, 70 and 84 days of age. The carcass traits (weight and carcass yield, breast and leg) were obtained from the slaughter of two broilers per pen, at 84 days old. Statistical analyzes were performed using the "proc glm" SAS. It was found that in all periods, Colorpak genotype broilers had higher body weight, better average daily feed intake, average daily weight gain and feed conversion. However, the genotypes Caboclo and Gigante Negro had lower average daily feed intake, and worse average daily weight gain and feed conversion. As for the cuts yield, it can be observed that the genotypes Caboclo and Gigante Negro presented the lowest values and Carijó, Colorpak, Pesadão Vermelho, Pescoço Pelado and Tricolor had the best yields for legs. For breast meat yield and weight, Carijó and Pesadão Vermelho had the highest values. The genotype choice should be in accordance with the market interest, because there are differences in performance and carcass yield and cuts...

ABSTRACT

The nutritional calcium (Ca) levels were determined for ISA Label broilers in the starter (1 to 28 days), growing (28 to 56 days), and finishing (56 to 84 days) phases. Three trials were conducted, one for each phase and in each trial, 480 birds with age corresponding to the phase were housed in 24 experimental units with shelter and pasture areas. The experimental design was completely randomized in a factorial arrangement of 4x2 (Ca levels and sex), totaling eight treatments with three replicates of 20 birds. Body weight gain (BWG); feed intake (FI); feed per gain (FG); contents of phosphorus (TP), calcium (TCa) and ash (TA) in tibia; and bone breaking strength (BSB) were evaluated. At the starter phase, 1.16 percent of Ca is recommended in the diet for birds of both sexes. At the growing phase, 0.78 and 0.88 percent of Ca for males and females, respectively, are recommended and at the finishing phase, the level of 0.69 percent of Ca is recommended in diet for both sexes.

ABSTRACT

From January to October 2007, 1,866 female goats of different breeds and ages from 84 herds of the Monteiro microregion, in a semiarid area of Paraíba State, Brazil, were tuberculinized. Nine goats (0.48%) were positive and two of them were slaughtered, and at necropsy tuberculosis-like lesions were found in lungs and liver. At the histopathologic examination, typical tuberculosis granulomas were observed. Micobacteria culture and isolation were carried out, and there was growth of the agent on the Stonebrink medium culture from 36 days of inoculation with an average growth time of 42 days. Positive results were also found in the research of acid-fast bacilli by Ziehl-Neelsen staining. The culture of Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis was negative. This report, with isolation and visualization of the agent, as well as verification of gross and microscopic lesions, is the first confirmed case of tuberculosis in goats of a semiarid region of Brazil.

ABSTRACT

HCV infection is highly prevalent among kidney transplant (KT) recipients. The natural history and management of these patients are controversial. We sought to assess the diagnostic value of noninvasive markers of liver fibrosis in KT HCV-infected patients. This cross-sectional study included 102 KT individuals with positive HCV-RNA. Bivariate and multivariate analyses were used to identify variables associated with significant fibrosis (METAVIR > or = F2). Significant fibrosis was observed in 20 patients (20%). Time after transplantation, AST level, and platelet count were identified as independent predictors of significant fibrosis. Based on the regression model, a simplified index was devised. The AUROC for the TX-3 model was 0.867 +/- 0.081 (0.909, when adjusted by DANA). Values < or =4.0 of TX-3 showed a NPV of 97% and scores >9.6 exhibited a PPV of 71%. If biopsy indication was restricted to scores in the intermediate range of TX-3, this could have been correctly avoided in 68% of cases. The APRI score provided a correct diagnosis in only 47 individuals (46%) and exhibited lower diagnostic indices for both cutoffs, as compared to the TX-3 index. Comparison of AUROCs showed a trend towards superior diagnostic accuracy for TX-3 over APRI, although the difference between AUROCs did not reach statistical significance (0.867 +/- 0.053 vs 0.762 +/- 0.066, respectively, P = 0.064). In conclusion, significant liver fibrosis can be reliably predicted in KT HCV-infected subjects by simple and widely available parameters. If additional studies confirm our results, this model might obviate the requirement for a liver biopsy in a significant proportion of those patients.

ABSTRACT

A case of dermatitis caused by atypical mycobateria of Mycobacterium fortuitum peregrinum complex was observed for the first time in Brazil. A five-year-old female mixed breed cat had a dermatitis process which had started eight months before. Lesions were characterized by macules, nodules, erosions, ulcers and exsudative fistulas, with intensive pruritus and pain. It had failed to respond to clinical treatment and surgical excision. The diagnosis was based on history, physical and dermatologic examination and complementary tests (cytologic, bacterioscopic, bacterial culture, histopathological, hemathological, ultrasonographic, radiographic and electrocardiographic). The presence of mycobacteria of Mycobacterium fortuitum-peregrinum complex (group IV of Runyon) was observed and identified after histopathological evidence, bacterial culture and biochemical tests. After two months of systemic therapy with enrofloxacin (5mg/kg, orally/twice a day) and topic treatment with triclosan and rifamicin, rapid improvement of the clinical appearance of the lesions were observed with low incidence of side-effects.

ABSTRACT

Industrial organic solvents present in glue are among the common used psychotropic drugs in Brazil and perhaps worldwide; but few data are available concerning the toxic effects of glue sniffing, with almost no information about immunotoxicity. This seems interesting because several drugs and environmental chemicals are recognized as potential immunotoxicants. The present study investigated the effects of forced inhalation of a toluene/n-hexane 1:1 mixture on hamster resistance to Mycobacterium bovis. Adult hamsters were divided at random into 3 equal groups. Animals of Groups E and E inhaled the mixture of toluene/n-hexane twice daily for 37 d. Group C was placed for the same period of time in identical chambers free of solvents. Two days after the beginning of the experiment, Groups E and C were injected ip with 0.5 ml of an activated suspension of M. bovis; Group E received the same volume of a control solution. Hamsters inhaling the toluene/n-hexane mixture (E) exhibited increased weight loss, increased scores of M. bovis colony forming units isolated from liver, lung and spleen, increased granulomatous areas in the liver, lung and spleen. Inhalation of the toluene/n-hexane mixture for 37 d also increased serum cortisol compared to control hamsters. Tuberculosis is an infection with an intracellular bacterium in which sensitivity is determined mainly by host response. The present data demonstrated impaired defense against M. bovis in hamsters inhaling a toluene/n-hexane mixture for 37 d. Since macrophages are the architectural and functional units of the granulomas in tuberculosis, and no data were found about glue solvent effects on cellular immunity, the present data suggest an indirect effect of glue solvents on macrophage/lymphocyte activity via stress induction and central nervous system stimulation of hormonal (ACTH/cortisol) secretion and/or autonomic nervous system activity.

ABSTRACT

Tuberculosis is an example of an infection with an intracellular bacterium in which sensitivity is determined mainly by the host response. Macrophages are the architectural and functional units of the granulomas described in tuberculosis. Treatment with amphetamine (AMPH) and diazepam has been reported to decrease macrophage activity. The present experiment was undertaken to investigate the effects of AMPH and/or diazepam given alone or in combination on hamster resistance to Mycobacterium bovis. The effects of these treatments on serum cortisol levels were also studied. Adult hamsters were treated i.p. with AMPH (group E1 = 1.0 or 2.0 mg/kg/day), with AMPH (group E2 = 1.0 or 2.0 mg/kg/day) plus diazepam (2.0 mg/kg/day), with diazepam (group E3 = 2.0 mg/kg/day), or with control vehicles (1.0 ml/kg/day) for 40 days. Six days after the beginning of the treatments, the animals received identical inoculum concentrations of M. bovis. Hamsters treated with AMPH plus diazepam exhibited: 1) increased weight loss; 2) increased mortality; 3) increased scores of M. bovis colony forming units (CFU) isolated from liver, lung and spleen; 4) increased granuloma areas measured in the liver, lung and spleen. These effects were not induced by AMPH (1.0 or 2.0 mg/kg/day) given alone and were produced by diazepam (2.0 mg/kg/day) treatment per se. Furthermore, AMPH (2.0 mg/kg/day) and diazepam (2.0 mg/kg/day) given alone or in combination for 20 days increased the serum levels of cortisol in relation to control hamsters, with the effect being higher in the animals treated with both drugs. The present data, which demonstrate an impaired defense against M. bovis in hamsters treated with AMPH plus diazepam or with diazepam alone, were tentatively explained on the basis of a direct and/or indirect action of the drugs on macrophage/lymphocyte activity. In the former case, the effects may be related to stimulation of peripheral benzodiazepine receptor sites (PBR) present on macrophages/lymphocytes and/or to a direct effect of ACTH on immune cells, while in the latter they may be mediated by cortisol via PBR and ACTH stimulation of the adrenals.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

The intestinal microbiota, a barrier to the establishment of pathogenic bacteria, is also an important reservoir of opportunistic pathogens. It plays a key role in the process of resistance-genes dissemination, commonly carried by specialized genetic elements, like plasmids, phages, and conjugative transposons. We obtained from strains of enterobacteria, isolated from faeces of newborns in a university hospital nursery, indication of phenotypical gentamicin resistance amplification (frequencies of 10(-3) to 10(-5), compatible with transposition frequencies). Southern blotting assays showed strong hybridization signals for both plasmidial and chromosomal regions in DNA extracted from variants selected at high gentamicin concentrations, using as a probe a labeled cloned insert containing aminoglycoside modifying enzyme (AME) gene sequence originated from a plasmid of a Klebsiella pneumoniae strain previously isolated in the same hospital. Further, we found indications of inactivation to other resistance genes in variants selected under similar conditions, as well as, indications of co-amplification of other AME markers (amikacin). Since the intestinal environment is a scenario of selective processes due to the therapeutic and prophylactic use of antimicrobial agents, the processes of amplification of low level antimicrobial resistance (not usually detected or sought by common methods used for antibiotic resistance surveillance) might compromise the effectiveness of antibiotic chemotherapy.
