ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: and purpose: Health professional trainees can experience the costs of caring, thus the importance of the teaching self-care. The aim of the present study is to analyze the changes in body awareness and self-compassion in clinical psychologists in training through a mindfulness program. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eight clinical psychologist trainees received eight weekly sessions; qualitative analysis of participants' personal journal was conducted. RESULTS: First, participants experienced four changes: awareness in physical sensations, well-being, and the sharpening and integration of senses. Then, they relayed an increase in body awareness of unpleasant sensations and self-compassion. On completion of the eight sessions, participants reported synchronicity with others, more compassion for themselves, deepening of body awareness and changes of habits and daily patterns. CONCLUSION: Mindfulness can help improve body awareness and self-compassion. It is important to address self-care in future health professionals to prevent stress and burnout, improving self-knowledge and self-consciousness.

ABSTRACT

Resumen La fatiga por compasión puede afectar el ámbito social, laboral, emocional, psicológico y físico de los profesionales sanitarios, así como derivar en una baja calidad en la relación con el paciente. El objetivo de este estudio es analizar los programas de intervención basados en mindfulness para la reducción de la fatiga por compasión en personal sanitario mediante una revisión de la literatura de las bases EbscoHost, Web Of Science y Scopus, entre 2010 y 2017. Los datos obtenidos muestran que las intervenciones basadas en mindfulness son eficaces para la reducción de síntomas de fatiga por compasión, burnout y malestar emocional, así como para la mejoría de la calidad de vida y el afecto positivo. En este sentido, las intervenciones basadas en mindfulness proporcionan estrategias para el auto-cuidado y la auto-conciencia, reduciendo la fatiga por compasión y aumentando la calidad de vida y el bienestar emocional del personal sanitario.


Abstract Compassion fatigue can affect the areas: social, occupational, emotional, psychological and physical of health professionals. Moreover, it can affect the quality of the relationship with patient. The objective of this study is to analyze the intervention programs based on mindfulness to reduce the fatigue compassion's symptoms in health professionals through a review of the literature by EbscoHost, Web Of Science and Scopus databases between 2010 and 2017. Data obtained show that programs based on mindfulness are effective to reduce the symptoms of compassion fatigue, burnout and distress. In addition, to increase the quality of life and positive affect. In this sense, interventions based on mindfulness promote strategies to self-care and self-awareness, reducing compassion fatigue symptomatology and increasing quality of life and emotional well-being.

ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to analyze the search for meaning in women with breast cancer and its relationship with the emotional well-being. One hundred thirty-one breast cancer survivors were assessed using a mixed method. Results showed that the meaning of suffering cancer can be explained by nine categories; and the utility of the suffering experienced was divided in seven categories. Moreover, the results showed a significant correlation between the meaning and the utility of suffering cancer, and the emotional well-being. The search for meaning in breast cancer women affects the emotional well-being, so it is necessary to attend it.

Resumen Introducción: La falta de información médica proporcionada puede resultar perjudicial para el funcionamiento psicológico del paciente oncológico, pudiendo presentarse síntomas de ansiedad y depresión ante esta necesidad no cubierta. Objetivo: Analizar la relación entre los niveles de información médica sobre el diagnóstico, el pronóstico, el tratamiento y los síntomas de ansiedad y depresión en una muestra de pacientes con cáncer de mama. Materiales y métodos: Se trató de un estudio transversal con 131 mujeres con cáncer de mama a las que se les aplicó una entrevista semiestructurada para recabar datos sociodemográficos y clínicos, y los niveles de información médica respecto a la enfermedad, así como la Escala Hospitalaria de Ansiedad y Depresión. La muestra fue no probabilística de cuatro hospitales públicos de España durante el año 2011. Los análisis estadísticos se realizaron mediante el programa estadístico SPSS. Resultados: Los datos obtenidos muestran que la falta de información sobre el diagnóstico de la enfermedad, el pronóstico y el tratamiento junto con la incomprensibilidad de la información estaban relacionados con síntomas depresivos y malestar emocional general. Sin embargo, no se encontraron relaciones significativas entre estas variables y la ansiedad. Conclusiones: La información que reciben las pacientes con cáncer de mama sobre su enfermedad, el pronóstico y el tratamiento médico influye en su bienestar emocional, presentándose mayores niveles de depresión en las pacientes que tienen escasa información, y esto es importante que sea tenido en cuenta por los profesionales médicos. Abstract Introduction: The lack of medical information can be harmful for the psychological adjustment of oncological patients, as symptoms of anxiety and depression could appear. Objective: To analyze the relationship between the levels of medical information about the diagnosis, prognostic and treatment, and symptoms of anxiety and depression in a sample of patients with breast cancer. Materials and method: Cross-sectional study with 131 women with breast cancer who were assessed by a semi structured interview to evaluate the sociodemographic and clinical data and levels of medical information. In addition, The Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale was used. The participants were recruited by non-probability sampling in four public hospitals of Spain. The statistical analysis were realized through SPSS. Results: The data obtained showed that the lack of information about the diagnosis, prognosis and treatment was related to symptoms of depression and poor general emotional well-being. Moreover, the incompressibility of the medical information was related to depression. However, the symptoms of anxiety were not statistically significant between these variables. Conclusions: The medical information that breast cancer patients receive about their illness, the prognosis and treatment affects emotional well-being and this is important to be considerate by medical team.
