ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether celebrity admiration is associated with personal relative deprivation, impulsivity, and materialism. We gave the Celebrity Attitude Scale, the Personal Relative Deprivation Scale, the MacArthur Scale of Subjective Social Status, a subscale from the Consideration of Future Consequences-14, and the Material Values Scale, to 149 respondents recruited through Mechanical Turk. We found a weak but significant association between personal relative deprivation and celebrity attitudes. We successfully replicated earlier research showing that celebrity attitudes were positively correlated with material values and impulsivity. Personal relative deprivation also correlated positively with both material values and impulsivity. These findings suggest that the constructs of personal relative deprivation and celebrity attitudes appear to have much in common as both are associated with poor quality of life.

ABSTRACT

Black (2012), using a novel citation-type analysis, identified the most frequently cited journals in forensic psychology. The article prompted two pedagogic concerns: the lack of coverage regarding the attributes and limitations of currently available features of citation operations in major databases, and on the expository level, in addressing a specialist vs generalist audience. The current paper addresses these issues and concludes that databases that offer citation options rely on different methods, coverage, and transparency of functions, there can be much variance in citation-search findings based on the type of analysis performed, and the field of bibliometrics is advancing at a torrid pace. Based on these concerns, citation-based findings would best be considered exploratory in nature.

ABSTRACT

Researchers in the field of psychology usually rely on PsycINFO as the sole bibliographic tool and tend to neglect other online resources. Such a mindset restricts the output of available reference citations during a literature review. The authors report on the usefulness of an adjutant database for social and behavioral scientists.

ABSTRACT

The research base for topics in forensic psychology is multidisciplinary. This paper highlights the critical importance of conducting multidatabase searches to obtain a comprehensive literature review of forensic topics.

ABSTRACT

The effects of a natural aversive stimulus (Hurricane Eloise in 1975) on locus of control and perception of the concept "hurricane" were investigated among 463 fifth graders from Title I schools in two coastal cities along Florida's Panhandle. Although both cities were threatened, only one was hit. Of the 269 Ss in the city hit, 184 had fourth grade locus of control scores. The hypotheses were (a) children in the city hit would not show the expected age-related increase in internality; (b) children in the city hit would be more external than children in the city not hit; and (c) children in the city hit would perceive the concept "hurricane" more positively than children in the city not hit, largely because of the effect of the positive view of internals in the city hit. The third hypothesis was supported. The results were interpreted from perceptual defense and aversive conditioning viewpoints. The lack of support for the first two hypotheses is consistent with recent disaster literature on the lack of negative reaction of populations in the aftermath of natural disasters.
