ABSTRACT

The Arkansas poultry industry produced more than 1.2 billion broiler chickens (Gallus gallus domesticus) and generated approximately 1.3 million Mg of broiler litter in 2002. High transportation costs of relocating broiler litter have led to annual land applications near poultry houses, increasing concern for potential surface water contamination from runoff. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of broiler litter application rate on runoff water quality in response to natural precipitation. Six plots (1.5 by 6.0 m), located on a Captina silt loam (finesilty, siliceous, active, mesic Typic Fragiudult), were amended with fresh broiler litter at 0, 5.6, and 11.2 Mg ha(-1) (control, low, and high litter treatments, respectively) once annually for 4 yr (May 2003 through April 2007). Runoff collected after each runoff-producing event was analyzed for soluble nutrients and metals. Cumulative runoff did not differ among litter treatments over the 4-yr study. At times, flow-weighted mean (FWM) concentrations of As from all litter treatments exceeded the maximum contaminant level for drinking water (0.01 mg As L(-1)). Four-year FWM Fe concentrations and runoff losses were greater (P < 0.05) from the high than from the low litter treatment and unamended control, and the 4-yr FWM P concentration from the low litter treatment (3.0 mg L(-1)) was greater than that from the unamended control (1.8 mg L(-1)). Since precipitation is temporally variable, evaluating runoff water quality in response to natural precipitation over several years is key to ascertaining the long-term impacts of surface-applied soil amendments like broiler litter.

ABSTRACT

The salts [18-crown-6-K](4)[Sn(4)Se(10)].5en and [18-crown-6-K](4)[Sn(4)Te(10)].3en.2THF were isolated upon addition of THF to the ethylenediamine (en) extracts of the alloys KSn(0.90)Se(1.93) and K(4)Sn(4)Te(10) that had been extracted in the presence of 18-crown-6 (1,4,7,10,13,16-hexaoxacyclooctadecane). The Sn(4)Te(10)(4-) anion has been structurally characterized for the first time by a single-crystal X-ray diffraction study of [18-crown-6-K](4)[Sn(4)Te(10)].3en.2THF: P2(1)/n, a = 22.420(5) A, b = 19.570(4) A, c = 24.680(5) A, beta = 96.90(3)(o), Z = 4, and R(1) = 0.0468 at -183 degrees C. In addition to Si(4)Te(10)(4-) and Ge(4)Te(10)(4-), the Sn(4)Te(10)(4-) anion represents the only other known group 14 adamantanoid telluride. The X-ray crystal structure determination of the related [18-crown-6-K](4)[Sn(4)Se(10)].5en salt has also been determined: P2(1)/n, a = 22.003(2) A, b = 18.966(2) A, c = 24.393(2) A, beta = 97.548(8)(o), Z = 4, and R(1) = 0.0843 at -123 degrees C. The anion geometries are of the adamantanoid type where the Sn(IV) atoms occupy the bridgehead positions and the chalcogen atoms occupy the bridging and terminal sites. The energy minimized geometries of Sn(4)Ch(10)(4-) have also been determined using density functional theory (DFT). Mayer bond order analyses, Mayer valencies, and empirical bond valencies indicate that the terminal Sn-Ch bonds have significant multiple bond character, with the terminal Sn-Se bond having more multiple bond character than the terminal Sn-Te bond. The vibrational frequencies of the Sn(4)Se(10)(4-) and Sn(4)Te(10)(4-) anions have been calculated using DFT methods, allowing the Raman spectrum of Sn(4)Se(10)(4-) to be fully assigned.

ABSTRACT

A new technique has been devised to resect vital malformed large dental crowns stemming from developmental fusion and gemination. In two cases from separate patients, resection of the fused crown with sharp osteotomes resulted in exposed pulp chambers that were subsequently allowed to heal. Root canal treatment was not necessary. Case follow-up at 12 and 4 years after orthodontics showed pulp vitality. A review of the literature as well as an explanation for healing modality were included.

ABSTRACT

Twenty-three institutionalized subjects, confused and disoriented as to time, space and persons, were divided into two groups: the study group and the control group. The study group then participated in a 3-month period of formal Realithy Orientation Therapy (ROT). At the end of the 3 months of therapy significant differences emerged in the scores of MMSE, OSGP and GDS obtained by the two groups. Moreover, significant positive differences were observed only in the study group, comparing the tests' results before and after therapy. Even the comparison of the results obtained at the end of the sessions and 3 months after the interruption of the therapy revealed a difference in the trends that emerged for the two groups.

ABSTRACT

Geriatric research shows that multidimensional assessment (MA) is the best method of approaching the complex functional problems of elderly subjects which are characterized by a close interdependence of clinical, social and mental factors. A correct and standardized communication of the results and the indications deriving from this complex interdisciplinary system is essential to enable the operators, despite their different professional backgrounds, to become involved in ensuring the health and welfare of their patients using integration and coordination criteria which are appropriate to the patient's individual situation. In this context, a computerized MA programme, known as "Senior", has been designed. The programme provides two communication sheets of data with different professional orientations: I) geriatric assessment sheet for doctors and other medical staff; II) graphic geriatric assessment sheet for non-medical operators. In practice, these assessment sheets are a useful backup in providing continuity between in- and out-patient programmes.

ABSTRACT

The study was designed to assess any changes in certain aspects of aging produced by combined drug (buflomedil) and motor activation therapy (MAT). The study was conducted on 3 selected groups of 10 women aged 60-74 years with initial signs of mental and physical senile impairment as revealed by appropriate psychometric and laboratories tests. The 3 groups (I: control, II: MAT, III: buflomedil + MAT) were given a series of cognitive, behavioural, affective and cardiovascular tests before and after the 6-month study. The results showed a deterioration in the parameters considered among the control group and a significant improvement especially in cardiovascular, affective and behavioural parameters as well as certain cognitive aspects (attention, mental state) in the group treated with MAT only. The combination of MAT and buflomedil had a positive influence on all parameters considered. In particular it acted extensively on the cognitive parameters. It is therefore concluded that the combination of MAT and drug treatment is a valid system for the prevention of senile impairment since it acts on the main biological, psychological and social aspects of the elderly patient.
