ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the presence of myofibroblasts, frequently associated with a more aggressive neoplastic behavior, in oral tongue squamous cell carcinoma (TSCC) of young patients and to compare with the distribution observed in older patients. STUDY DESIGN: Tumor samples from 29 patients younger than 40 years old affected by TSCC were retrieved and investigated for the presence of stromal myofibroblasts by immunohistochemical reactions against α smooth muscle actin, and the results obtained were compared to TSCC cases affecting older patients. RESULTS: No positive reaction could be found in the stromal areas devoid of neoplastic tissue, whereas myofibroblasts were present in 58.6% of the lesions in young patients and in 75.9% of the older ones. No significant difference was found when comparing the invasive front and the overall stroma of both groups, and no correlation could be obtained with stromal α smooth muscle actin expression, higher tumor grades or clinical stage (P > .05). CONCLUSION: There was no significant difference between the presence of stromal myofibroblasts of TSCC affecting young and old individuals.

ABSTRACT

Introduction. Taking into account the bone repair process in pigs has shown a greater similarity among the histological variables studied compared to other biological models, the present study has as its aim to evaluate the histological bone repair process of osteotomy performed on alveolar and extra-alveolar bones, using drilling tools with liquid refrigeration. Material and method. Eighteen Large White pigs weighing between 20 and 25 Kg were divided into three groups of six animals in order to evaluate the osteotomy repairs with low and high speed in the alveolar bone and threes in the extra-alveolar area, study periods of 7, 14 and 28 days. Results. It was observed that in the alveolar bone at the postoperative times of 14 and 28 days, the best repair results were in the osteotomy performed with low speed, while in the 7 day postoperative period, the results with high speed were slightly better, in alveolar areas as well as extra-alveolar areas. There no statistically significant differences between the alveolar and extra-alveolar bone repair process. Conclusions. The repair process, by means of microscopic analysis in the alveolar and extra-alveolar areas, are similar with better results observed in osteotomies performed with low speed drills in the 14 and 28 day study periods, and at 7 days postoperative the results with high speed drills and refrigeration were slightly better. Research works using pigs as an animal model are perfectly viable(AU)

ABSTRACT

Angioleiomyoma is an uncommon benign soft tissue tumor usually found in the lower extremities and rarelyobserved in oral tissues. It is microscopically characterized as a proliferation of smooth muscle cells intermingledwith abundant vascular channels. Oral angioleiomyomas affect mostly the lips, palate, buccal mucosa andtongue, and appears as a submucosal painless nodule. Upper lip is seldom affected and only few cases have beenreported. We report three additional cases of angioleiomyoma affecting the lips of elderly patients. All lesionswere asymptomatic and presented as submucosal nodules of approximately 1cm. Microscopic analysis on H&Esections revealed similar pattern in all cases, showing well-circumscribed and encapsulated tumors characterizedby proliferation of smooth muscle cells and large amount of wide vascular spaces of varying sizes. Most tumorcells were immunoreactive for α-smooth muscle actin, desmin and HHF-35. CD34 was also positive on the endothelialcells. All patients were surgically treated and no recurrence was observed so far. The oral pathologistsand clinicians should consider this entity when assessing nodular lesions on upper lip (AU)

ABSTRACT

Dento-alveolar process fracture is an important and common event in the dental office practice usually managed under the well-established protocols, but sometimes this kind of lesion is evaluated in the hospital emergency rooms without attention to the dental injuries. In this type of trauma, the time between the injury and the definitive resolution is essential for the treatment success, usually 1 h in cases of dento-alveolar fractures (tooth and alveolar bone). This paper describes the management of a patient with unusual dento-alveolar fracture caused by gunshot and treated using screw fixation.

ABSTRACT

Pemphigus vulgaris is a chronic and serious auto-imune vesiculo-bullous disease that affects skin and mucous membrane. Antidesmosomal antibodies dissolve intercellular substance that keeps epithelial cells together, resulting in an intraepithelial blister just above basal epithelial layer. Without treatment, pemphigus vulgaris leads patient to die. The fact that this disorder presents oral manifestation in most cases, in addiction to the relevance of a precocious diagnosis to the success of the treatment and prognosis support the importance of about the knowledge of this disease to dentist's notice
