ABSTRACT

The aggregation status of the blood in the bulbar vessels was assessed by computer analyzer system of television images of the eye (CASTIE) in 10 patients with hypertensive angiosclerosis, 22 with diabetic proliferative retinopathy, and 15 patients without vascular abnormalities. The aggregation gradients of intravascular bloodflow in the venules were increased and aggregation coefficients in the bulbar veins decreased in the patients with vascular diseases of the retina, this indicating disorders of blood aggregation. CASTIE helps assess the degree of disorders in blood aggregation at the level of the intravascular and parietal bloodflow and single out the groups at risk of developing thrombotic complications of the retina among the patients with essential hypertension and diabetes mellitus.

ABSTRACT

As shown by conjunctival biomicroscopy, 6-month administration of ticlid and gliclazide induced a statistically significant increase in the frequency of less severe microcirculatory disturbances compared to conventional hypoglycemic therapy. The drugs also restricted plasmatic impregnation and cell proliferation in skin biopsy microvascular wall. Following 2-year antiaggregation treatment (gliclazide, trental, dipiridomol) 48.9% of diabetes mellitus patients achieved regression of morphological manifestations of diabetic microangiopathy, 16.2% stabilization against 34.9% of progressive disease cases. Conventional sugar-reducing therapy fails to stop diabetic microangiopathy progression in 73.4-93.3% of the diabetics.

ABSTRACT

The suggested method for assessment of the blood aggregation characteristics in the conjunctival vessels is based on microdensitometry of the blood stream microphotographs. The method permits a graphic recording of the blood stream. The potentialities of the developed technique have been studied in comparison of the blood aggregation in patients with diabetic retinopathy and in normal subjects. The data evidence an increased coagulation activity of the blood in patients with diabetes mellitus vs. normal subjects, this correlating with the biochemical findings in examinations of these patients' hemostasis. The clinical method for assessment of the blood aggregation characteristics may be useful for the prognosis of the course of various diseases and for monitoring the treatment efficacy.
