ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WRMSDs) and ergonomic risk factors are very common in bakery workers. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to (1) assess the prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders among bakers because they use automated machines or traditional baking, and (2) to determine the strategies to prevent musculoskeletal disorders in bakers. METHODS: A systematic review of PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science was conducted from the beginning to February 4, 2022, based on the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Mesh keywords and phrases were used to execute the search strategy. Information on MSDs and ergonomic risk factors in bakery workers was collected. Two reviewers worked independently on study selection, data extraction, and paper quality ranking. RESULTS: This study identified 14 papers from seven countries. Although the prevalence of MSDs in bakery workers has been studied, only a handful of them have been studied ergonomic risk factors, and the findings have been very limited. The association between different risk factors and MSDs seemed significant compared to many other occupational diseases. The traditional bread-baking system and lack of mechanization may increase the risk of MSDs in bakery workers. CONCLUSION: WRMSDs for bakery workers have been less studied than other occupational diseases. Our systematic review found several significant relations between the factors influencing the prevalence of MSDs. This study also showed the comparison of traditional and modern cooking systems with diseases of the upper limbs, shoulders, and back pain as possible fields for future research.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Fire extinguishing operations are carried out by firefighters equipped with personal protective equipment (PPE) in dangerous environments. Although PPE protects firefighters, it can affect many physiological parameters. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the effects of PPE on firefighters' heart rate (HR), oxygen consumption (OC) and body temperature (BT). METHODS: This systematic review thoroughly reviewed relevant articles in the reliable databases "Web of Science", "Embase", "IranDoc", "IranMedex", "SID", "Magiran", "Google Scholar", "PubMed" and "Scopus" from 2010 to 2021. Some of the used search terms were "firefighters", "personal protective equipment", "heart rate" and "oxygen consumption". RESULTS: Out of the 405 studies identified through the systematic search, 18 articles were eligible according to the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) checklist, among which 11 studies were conducted in North America, three in Asia, two in Europe, and two studies in Oceania. According to the review of studies, PPE increased HR, BT, and OC. The type of PPE components, the weight of the equipment, the kind of activity of firefighters, and weather conditions were among the influencing parameters on the extent of PPE's influence on these physiological parameters. CONCLUSION: The results of the studies show that PPE separately and collectively affects the physiological parameters of HR, BT and OC. To reduce these effects, it is necessary to pay attention to several items, including the weight of PPE, the type of PPE ingredients in different weather conditions, and the type of activities of firefighters in PPE design.

BACKGROUND: Nursing is one of the most stressful occupations. Educational intervention regarding stress management can play an important role in reducing occupational stress among nurses The present study aimed to determine the effectiveness of educational intervention on reducing oxidative stress caused by occupational stress in nurses: A health promotion approach in a hospital in western Iran. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The present interventional study was performed in 2019 among 92 nurses working at the Kosar Hospital located in the city of Sanandaj in the country of Iran. Occupational stress was evaluated using the Osipow Occupational Stress Questionnaire. Oxidative stress was measured by taking blood samples and measuring the enzymatic activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD), malondialdehyde, and catalase (CAT) using SOD, malondialdehyde (MDA), and CAT kits. Educational intervention was carried out in the second stage. Three months after the intervention, data were taken again. RESULTS: The results of the present study indicated that there was a significant difference in occupational stress between before and after the educational intervention (P < 0.05). A significant reduction in MDA (P = 0.038) and SOD (P = 0.048) was observed after educational intervention, but this was not the case for CAT (P = 0.592). There was no significant correlation between occupational stress with oxidative stress parameters before and after the educational intervention (P < 0.05). No significant difference in occupational stress was observed between men and women. Among the oxidative stress parameters under evaluation, MDA was higher among men compared to women and this was statistically significant. CONCLUSIONS: Educational intervention regarding occupational stress is effective in reducing oxidative stress among nurses. The group meetings teach stress management to the participants and enable them to better manage their stress by utilizing their own capabilities. Thus, attention to this issue is vital in maintaining the mental and physical health of nurses and, in turn, improves the quality of care rendered.

BACKGROUND: Improving the level of knowledge, attitude and practices of workers exposed to heat stress using a suitable tool can be a cheap and effective method. This requires the consideration of personal, environmental and social factors, which, the PRECEDE model is highly applicable for. Thus, the aim of the present study is the development of a tool assessment for measuring the knowledge, attitude and practices of workers in outdoor occupations regarding heat stress exposure using the PRECEDE model. METHODS: In the present study, a tool was designed and constructed using the PRECEDE model by analyzing the relevant literature and expert opinion. The face validity of the tool was determined based on the opinion of ten experts with experience in the field of occupational weather conditions. The content validity of the tool was determined using the Content Validity Ratio (CVR) and the Content Validity Index (CVI). Cronbach's alpha reliability coefficient was used to determine the reliability of the tool's internal consistency. SPSS version 23 was used for statistical analysis. RESULTS: A PRECEDE based questionnaire was designed with a total of 55 questions consisting of predisposing factors (28 questions for knowledge and 14 questions for attitude), enabling factors (5 questions), reinforcing factors (3 questions) and preventive behaviors (5 questions). The Content Validity Index (CVI) of all questions was above 0.79. The Content Validity Ratio (CVR) of all questions was above 0.62 (Lawshe method). The Cronbach's alpha reliability coefficient of all PRECEDE domains were above the 0.7 acceptable value. Based on the results obtained, all 55 questions were approved and thus the content validity and reliability of this tool was deemed acceptable. CONCLUSION: Considering the reliability and validity of this tool, its application is recommended in all health and safety inspections within various industries for measuring the heat stress knowledge, attitude and practices of workers engaged in outdoor occupations and also for presenting suitable solutions or preventive measures.

BACKGROUND: Job satisfaction is one of the most important issues related to human resources in the organization which can reduce organizational productivity. In this regard, occupational health is an important science related to the health of the workforce in any organization, paying attention to it will help health promotion. The aim of the present study was to determine the relationship between the status of occupational health management and job satisfaction among farmers with a health promotion approach. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted in 2020. The number of 209 farmers from all villages of Zabol was included by census method. Data were collected using a researcher-made questionnaire that consisting of three sections of demographic information, occupational safety and health status, and standard job satisfaction questionnaire. At first, the validity and reliability of the questionnaire were evaluated. In addition, 5-10 staff working in Agricultural Jihad Organization were asked about the content, clarity, and simplicity of the questionnaire terms. Content validity index and content validity ratio indexes were calculated as 0.68 and 0.83 for occupational health management and 0.69 and 0.83 for job satisfaction questionnaires, respectively. Instrument reliability was also assessed using the Cronbach's alpha coefficient, which was 0.872. Finally, after verifying the validity and reliability of the instrument, a questionnaire was used to collect the research data. Shapiro-Wilk, Wilcoxon, and Spearman correlation tests were used to analyze the findings. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS software version 19. Armonk; NY, USA: IBM Corp. RESULTS: The results of the study indicate that occupational health management was at a moderate to a high level (3.701) and job satisfaction (3.381) was at a moderate to a high level. The standard regression coefficient between occupational health management and job satisfaction was obtained as 0.571. With a confidence of 95%, it can be stated that occupational health management in Zabol city under the supervision of jihad-e-agriculture organization has a significant impact on farmers' job satisfaction. In addition, the research findings confirmed a positive and significant relationship between occupational health management and job satisfaction of employed farmers and showed that the implementation of occupational safety and health programs in the jihad-e-agriculture organization can affect the job satisfaction of farmers. CONCLUSION: According to the evaluation of research findings, job satisfaction and occupational health management in the Agricultural Jihad Organization are relatively favorable among farmers in Zabol city. It was argued that there is a relationship between occupational health management and job satisfaction, that the implementation of programs related to occupational safety and health management system such as Health and Safety Executive will promote health.

ABSTRACT

Driver's drowsiness is one of the high-risk road behaviors that quadruples the risk of road accidents. Measures to deal with drowsiness during driving include listening to music. The present study investigates the effect of two types of music, namely Iranian high-tempo pop and classical music, on mental and physiological drowsiness during driving. Twelve male students at Tehran University of Medical Sciences within the normal range of the Epworth Drowsiness Scale (ESS) participated in this study. Two types of music (classical and pop) were assessed on two separate days with an interval of one week. The mental aspect of drowsiness was evaluated using the Karolinska Sleepiness Scale (KSS), the physiological aspect by monitoring the EEG and heart rate, and the functional aspect through the mean and standard deviation of speed and the Standard Deviation of Lateral Position (SDLP) in a driving simulator. The results showed that the brain waves (four algorithms (1) (θ + α)/ß, (2) α/ß, (3) (θ + α)/(α + ß) and (4) θ/ß), the KSS score, SDLP and standard deviation of speed all decrease while the mean heart rate increases when listening to music during driving compared to driving without music. No significant difference was observed in the mean speed when exposed to music. Moreover, no difference was observed between the effect of the two music styles, i.e. Iranian classical and pop music. Listening to Iranian classical and pop music while driving improves the driver's performance and reduces drowsiness. The present study showed that higher tempo music during driving can reduce drowsiness and change physiological responses and driving performance.

ABSTRACT

The aim of the present study was to first fabricate an electrospun PVC nanofiber web and then assess its applicability in sampling and measuring the concentration of airborne crystalline silica by comparing analysis results with a commercial PVC membrane filter under different ranges of airborne silica concentration. A filtration performance comparison was also made between an electrospun PVC web with nano-sized fibers and a commercial PVC membrane filter. Overall, the measured concentration of silica by the electrospun webs was 1.022 times higher than that of the commercial PVC filter in all studied ranges of silica concentration and the nanofiber media had higher filtration efficiency and lower pressure drop compared to the PVC membrane filter. This can be considered to be due to the lower fiber diameter and greater porosity (obtained from the 2D SEM image) of the electrospun nanofiber webs. This makes them suited for air pollutant sampling and determining its airborne concentration.

ABSTRACT

The presence of hazardous agents in workplaces has raised concerns regarding their possible impacts on male reproductive system. The present study investigated the individual and combined effects of exposure to heat stress and electromagnetic fields with low-frequency characteristics on the levels of sex hormones in two foundry sections (Aluminum and Cast Iron) of an automobile parts manufacturing plant. The level of workers' exposure (n = 110) to each of the mentioned stressors, was measured through standard methods and for each person and the time-weighted average (TWA) of exposure was calculated. The participants of each sections were classified into separate exposure groups based on the 33rd and 66th percentile of the level of to heat stress and electromagnetic fields exposure. In order to determine serum sex hormones, blood samples were taken from all participants between 7-9 am and then the blood samples were analyzed by ELISA method. In total of two sections, the lowest mean testosterone levels was observed in the third exposure group of the electromagnetic fields (magnetic field>1.40 µT; electric field >0.42 V/m), however, the mean difference in testosterone levels between the three different groups of exposure wasn't statistically significant (P > 0.05). According to the results of Logistic Regression, the electric field had the greatest effect on testosterone levels as the main male hormone. Drawing a definitive conclusion regarding the effects of each harmful physical hazards is difficult due to the existence of psychological stressors and other environmental stressors such as chemical pollution, ergonomic hazards and other physical stressors.

ABSTRACT

Occupational exposure to heat stress may lead to changes in blood cell count. The objective of this retrospective descriptive-analytical field study is to investigate the relationship between heat stress exposure and some immunological parameters among foundry workers. This study was carried out on 55 subjects of which, 35 were working in a foundry unit (exposed group) and 20 were working in a computer numerical control (CNC) machining unit (control group). The measurement method consisted of taking 10 cc of the subjects' blood between 10 am and 2 pm and then performing the automated blood cell counting and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) on the sample. Environmental parameters such as noise levels, lighting, and the wet-bulb globe temperature (WBGT) index were measured at the subjects' workstations. All measurements were made in the first half of the month of July. The mean WBGT index was 22.5 ± 2.16 °C for the control group and 32.97 ± 3.22 °C for the exposed group. The laboratory test results show a significant decrease in white blood cell count and lymphocyte levels and a significant increase in neutrophil levels and neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio in exposed group compared with control ones (P < 0.05). IgM levels decrease under heat stress, but we do not observe significant differences between IgG and IgA levels between two groups. A significant negative correlation was observed between white blood cell count, lymphocyte levels, and IgM concentration with WBGT index and significant positive correlation was observed between neutrophil and neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio with WBGT index. No significant correlation was observed between sound pressure levels and light intensity with studied immunological parameters. In conclusion, under heat stress conditions, leukocytes levels and immunoglobulin concentration may reduce and it may weaken and suppress the human immune system.
