ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Two Bispectral contrast enhancement approaches for the fluorescence diagnosis with chlorine-e6 and a wide field-of-view imaging system with fluorescence excitation at 405 nm and time-resolved background suppression were analyzed and compared. METHODS: Two techniques for the contrast enhancement of a fluorescent video system (Red/Green (R/G) ratio and Red-Green (R-G)) with time-resolved background suppression for fluorescent diagnosis (FD) were tested in four patients with basal cell carcinoma (BCC). RESULTS: The results of both contrast enhancement methods were compared for the diagnostic efficiency for FD of BCC. Both techniques successfully determined the boundaries of the lesions and the fluorescence intensity. CONCLUSIONS: Both contrast enhancement modes have proven effective in identifying tumor borders in cases of low contrast in BCC FD with Ce6. While the Red/Green (R/G) mode provides sharper lesion borders, the Red minus Green (R-G) mode visualizes more fluorescent features and makes it easier to assess the lesion margins.

ABSTRACT

In order to study the appendix involvement with respiratory viruses in appendicitis, 44 cases of this disease in patients varying in ages from 14 to 71 years were investigated at random. Light microscopy and immunofluorescent examinations of the appendix were performed. The results were compared with those of serological blood tests done in the time course. In 20 patients the role of respiratory viruses and sometimes Mycoplasma pneumoniae proved to be doubtless by a significant rise in antibody titres (4-32-fold), as a rule, without any marked manifestations on the part of the respiratory organs. This was combined with detection of the antigen of the agent in enterocytes and with structural changes of the organ typical of these infections according to the results of previous examinations of the intestinal tract in generalized acute viral respiratory infections and mycoplasmosis. In 14 patients the role of respiratory viruses seemed to be likely. They showed positive results of immunofluorescent and light microscopy examinations without a significant rise in antibody titres, however. In 7 patients the role of respiratory viruses did not seem convincing: they had positive results of either immunofluorescence or serological tests alone. Three patients had no evidence of lesions caused by respiratory viruses or mycoplasma.

ABSTRACT

The data on 130 patients with acute ulcers of the gastrointestinal tract complicated hemorrhage and perforation are reported. Acute ulcers developed in patients with cardiovascular diseases (47%), intoxication (17.7%), postoperative paresis of the stomach and intestine (10%), other pathology (15.3%), and in medication (10%). The former manifested in acute hemorrhage in 108 patients, perforation--in 8, hemorrhage and perforation--in 14. In 86% of cases ulcers were located in the stomach, and in 63%--these were multiple. Conservative therapy was employed in 97 patients and 33 patients were operated upon. The mortality after early operations was 2.5 times as low as in the expectation policy and conservative therapy.
