ABSTRACT

The number and intensity of fluorescence of small, intensely fluorescent cells were measured on serial slices of main pelvic (MPG) ganglion and lumbar ganglia of sympathetic trunk (LG), treated by modified Falck method, on days 1, 7, 14, 28, and 26-30 months of age. The content of paraform-induced fluorescence increased with age of two weeks and later in SIF cells of MPG and LG. The number of SIF cells in LG decreased with age, while that of MPG increased. The growth of a number of SIF cells in MPG was detected in large clusters.

ABSTRACT

The number and fluorescence intensity of small intensely fluorescent (SIF) cells in the nerve ganglia of the rat atria were determined after the treatment, using modified Falk's method. The animals were 1, 7, 14, 28 days and 30 months of age. Similar changes were found in the amount of SIF cells and fluorophore content in all the atrial regions. A marked increase in the number of SIF cells and maximum values were determined between the second and fourth week after birth. The first two weeks of age corresponded to the decrease and the forth week to the increase in SIF cells fluorescent intensity. The data of the investigation made it possible to suggest the connection between principal stages of SIF cell pool formation and processes of autonomic ganglia innervation development.

ABSTRACT

The tissue components of the subendocardial, inner and outer intramural layers of the myocardium were examined by morphometry. There was no significant difference in the proportion of cardiomyocytes in the different layers of the myocardium (subendocardium 0.820 +/- 0.007; inner layer 0.713 +/- 0.100; outer intramural layers 0.727 +/- 0.008; subepicardium 0.699 +/- 0.009). The relative surface of cardiomyocytes was maximal in the subepicardium (58.62 +/- 1,18). The magnitudes of the volumetric density and surface of the capillaries decreased from the subepicardial toward the subendocardial layer. The diameter of myocytes in the test layers of the myocardium varied within a wide range.

ABSTRACT

In the emergency stage of heart compensatory hypertrophy induced by constriction of the abdominal aorta, quantitative autoradiographic localization of newly synthesized proteins and RNA was studied in the left ventricular myocardium of adult rats 1 and 3 hours after the injection of 3H-leucine and 3H-uridine, respectively. The animals were sacrificed 1, 5 and 10 days after the operation. The amount of the autoradiographic grains was measured separately for muscle and interstitial components of the myocardium. A substantial increase in protein synthesis as regards muscle and non-muscle components was recorded only on day 10 of the experiment. At the same time incorporation of amino acids into protein of muscle and interstitial components was found to be higher by 42 and 60%, respectively. The labeling of RNA in muscle cells was similar to that of protein. In interstitial cells, the content of labeled RNA consistently rose throughout the whole experiment.

ABSTRACT

The reaction of the connective tissue component of the rat left ventricular myocardium to hypertrophy induced by ventral aorta coarctation in the subdiaphragmatic part was studied by electron microscopy with the use of morphometric analysis. The animals were sacrificed 1, 5 and 10 days after the operation. It the heart of intact animals, the relative amount of the connective tissue was equal to 10.2%. Of this number, 2% were cellular elements, 0.2 and 8% were fibrous and amorphous parts of the intermediate tissue, respectively. In the emergency stage of hypertrophy there was an augmentation of the total amount of the connective tissue, the ratio of its diverse components varied with time. Moreover, an activation of the synthetic processes was recorded in the cells of the fibroblastic type.
