ABSTRACT

Penile block has been in use in penile surgery as a technique for perioperative analgesia for 25 years. The authors reintroduced penile block on the Department of Paediatric Anaesthetics and Intensive Care at the University Children's Hospital in Bratislava, Slovakia in June 2004 after 8 years. This prospective open observational study presents their experience with penile block for elective penile surgery in 96 paediatric patients (Tab. 3, Ref. 14).

ABSTRACT

In the authors department in the course of six years 38 percutaneous nephrostomis were performed. The most frequent indication was renal failure and infection of the urinary pathways in obstruction of the ureter. Puncture of the hollow renal system was performed in the majority of patients under ultrasonographic control from a posterolateral approach and dilatation of the nephrostomic canal under intermittent X-ray control. After dilatation into the renal pelvis a nephrostomic catheter was inserted. The success rate of the procedure was 95%. In two patients percutaneous nephrostomy failed and was repeated after a certain time interval.

ABSTRACT

A prospective study was designed to assess the value of scrotal ultrasound in the diagnosis of testicular neoplasm. Comparison of findings yielded by ultrasound with those made on surgical exploration of the scrotal contents in 56 patients showed a sensitivity of 94.6%, specificity of 57.9% and an overall accuracy of ultrasound of 82.1%. While capable of distinguishing intra- from extratesticular structure, scrotal ultrasound is not specific enough to differentiate a tumour from benign diseases involving testicular parenchyma. Still, it may add new information to the clinical examination of the scrotum, and reduce the number of probatory surgical procedures in patients with the finding of an intrascrotal mass. This paper describes the ultrasound pictures of a normal testis, testicular tumours and extratesticular disease that are most often considered in the differential diagnosis of testicular tumours.

ABSTRACT

Antegrade pyeloureterography performed via fine puncture needle yields detailed imaging of the anatomy of the renal pelvis, calices, and ureter of the transplanted kidney. It is a simple and safe examination method providing information which, as a rule, can not be obtained by urography, radioisotope gammagraphy or ultrasonography. Puncture of the collecting system of the transplanted kidney with subsequent pyeloureterography is indicated for determining the site and nature of the obstruction in the ureter in urinary stasis in the transplanted kidney, for diagnosing urinary fistulas, for functional examination of the dilated upper urinary tract, as well as for percutaneous treatment of urological complications after kidney transplantation.
