ABSTRACT

The authors present 12 patients operated upon for arteriovenous malformations located in deep structures of brain. In terms of the location, clinical course and neurological status there were three distinct groups of patients. The results of the operative treatment lead to the conclusion that the operative treatment risk is no greater than in cases of superficial AVMs, in which it is generally accepted.

ABSTRACT

Among 1250 patients with brain tumors the authors found in 7 of them a coexistent vascular anomaly. 6 patients had arterial aneurysm and 1 arteriovenous malformation. 3 tumors were metastatic carcinomas, 2 multiform glioblastomas, 1 craniopharyngioma and 1 chromophobe adenoma. All aneurysms were located in direct neighbourhood of the tumor. The authors postulate angiography in all patients with brain tumors who are planned to be treated surgically.

ABSTRACT

The authors report two cases of rarely observed arteriovenous malformations of the external carotid artery treated surgically. The diagnostic problems and own observations and methods of surgical treatment of these malformations are discussed.

ABSTRACT

The authors report the results of surgical treatment of 11 patients with carpal tunnel syndrome. The group comprised 10 women and 1 man. In 4 cases bilateral symptoms were present. The duration of the disease was from 6 months to 10 years (mean 4.2 years). In all patients operation was followed by complete disappearance of symptoms. Control determination of conduction velocity in the median nerve after several months showed significant improvement. The authors reach the conclusion that surgical treatment permits very good results to be achieved not only in early but also in late stages of the disease.

ABSTRACT

In a patient after operation for metastatic bronchogenic brain abscess presence of aneurysm was demonstrated during control carotid angiography. In previous angiography the aneurysm had not been seen. During further observation the size of the aneurysm decreased. The patient died 5 weeks after the operation due to rupture of lung abscess into the pleural cavity. Microscopic examination showed that the lesion was in fact pseudoaneurysm. The authors discuss the mechanism of development of mycotic aneurysms and their possible role in the pathogenensis of metastatic brain abscesses.
