ABSTRACT

Cooling the nape of the neck is said to induce reflex constriction of the mucosal vessels of the nose, but there is no general agreement in the literature on the benefit of an ice pack as an adjuvant treatment of epistaxis. We investigated this effect by rhinomanometry, and the results provided theoretical support for this well tried therapy.

ABSTRACT

About 30 cases of a persistent stapedial artery have been described in the literature so far. It is usually associated with other malformations, suggesting an inhibition of normal embryonic development. For the first time, it was possible to demonstrate this using high-resolution computed tomography.

ABSTRACT

Acute and chronic ear infection can lead to intracranial complications, brain abscess and meningitis being the most serious. The clinical picture, diagnosis and therapeutic guidelines are discussed. The important role of interdisciplinary management is emphasised by a case report.

ABSTRACT

In the course of the use of carrier- bounded radioactive substances for the treatment of the vocal cord carcinoma, 113 patients with a vocal cord carcinoma were treated with radium contact irradiation after thyroid cartilage windowing at the ENT University Clinic Essen. The period of study extended from 1972 to 1983. 88,6% of the patients with vocal cord carcinoma, who showed a typical localisation for radium contact irradiation, became recurrence-free. About 88,0% of the patients, who were led through an irradiation treatment of extended indication, became recurrence-free. A normal vocal function was achieved in 71,7% of all cases.

ABSTRACT

Acute and chronic ear infection can lead to intracranial involvement. We report on a case in which two typical cerebral complications followed a chronic otitis media. It seemed that there was no causal relationship between brain abscess and meningitis. The meningitis itself was complicated by rupture of an infectious intracranial aneurysm with fatal outcome. We have not been able to find a similar case in the literature. Clinical picture and therapeutic management are discussed.

ABSTRACT

There is no objective correlate for a reduction of the absolute threshold of excitability of the vestibular organ during subliminal rotation by the exposition of transient light stimuli, i.e. an intermodal vestibulo-optical transformation, which is supposed to be possible in aesthesiophysiology. Only on rotation at a speed near the limit threshold value, pseudomotions of the exposed lighting point will occur. However, these are the consequences of an eye movement reflex, of fixation or cervical reflexes, i.e. a phenomenal event, and not an exteroceptive measure for the identification of subliminar vestibular stimuli.

ABSTRACT

Follow up of 45 patients who had undergone a surgical voice rehabilitation by Asai's or Staffieri's method showed clearly that the main problem of such operations is not the restoration of a good voice but the guarantee of a normal swallow. The low position of the tracheo-pharyngeal fistula in Staffieri's operation is particularly disadvantageous and often requires surgical closure of the neoglottis. A strict pre-operative assessment is indicated before all operative methods for voice rehabilitation. Oesophageal speech remains the best voice after laryngectomy and operative reconstruction is relegated to second place.

ABSTRACT

The results of chemotherapy for T3 and T4 squamous cell carcinoma of the oropharynx treated by chemotherapy, surgery and irradiation (n = 19), or by surgery plus irradiation (n = 28) were analysed. The two groups were similar as regards site and extent of the tumour, but the first group had a much worse prognosis. The selection of the patients, the method and results of therapy are described. The probable reasons for the failure of the chemotherapy are discussed.
