ABSTRACT

This paper presents the analysis of how ISP slag addition affects the effectiveness of chloride extraction from self-compacting concrete. Corrosion processes were initiated by chloride ions added to concrete by the method accelerated with an electric field. Corrosion of reinforcement was monitored using the method of linear polarization resistance (LPR). Polarization measurements of steel reinforcement and chloride profiles were analysed to evaluate the effectiveness of electrochemical extraction. Microstructural analysis was conducted on a specimen of concrete after migration and extraction of chlorides. The presence of chloride ions and the application of an electric field during migration were tested with respect to the changed microstructure of concrete evaluated on the basis of image analysis using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The research contributes to a better understanding of the corrosion processes caused by the presence of chloride ions in concretes in which ISP slag was used as a substitute for sand in various amounts. Thanks to the treatments of concrete with already corroding reinforcement bars, it can be concluded that the moderate replacement of sand with ISP slag limited to 25% allows for the effective inhibition of corrosion processes taking place in these concretes. However, it is not possible to completely withdraw already started corrosion processes in steel. The observations of the microstructure of concrete in which sand was completely replaced with ISP slag indicate that after prolonged use of the chloride extraction process, we can expect a change in the microstructure and the formation of ettringite, which may cause the concrete structure to burst. The obtained information will contribute to the development of modelling methods for chloride ion extraction from a wide range of currently used concretes.

ABSTRACT

The production of ordinary Portland cement is associated with significant CO2 emissions. To limit these emissions, new binders are needed that can be efficiently substituted for cement. Alkali-activated slag composites are one such possible binder solution. The research programme presented herein focused on the creation of alkali-activated slag composites with the addition of PET flakes as a partial substitute (5%) for natural aggregate. Such composites have a significantly lower impact in terms of CO2 emissions in comparison to ordinary concrete. The created composites were differentiated by the amount of activator (10 and 20 wt.%) and curing temperature (from 20 to 80 °C). Their mechanical properties were tested, and a scanning electron microscope analysis was conducted. Compressive and flexural strengths ranging from 29.3 to 68.4 MPa and from 3.5 to 6.1 MPa, respectively, were achieved. The mechanical test results confirmed that a higher amount of activator improved the mechanical properties. However, the influence of the PET particles on the mechanical properties and microstructure varied with the curing temperature and amount of activator. Areas that require further research were identified.

ABSTRACT

Due to the rational shaping of the environment and the management of environmental resources in accordance with the principle of sustainable development, calcareous fly ash (CFA)-high-calcium as a by-product of lignite combustion-is a valuable addition to concrete. This additive, however, due to its high-water demand lowers the workability of the concrete mix, which is a problem, especially in the first 90 min after mixing the components of the mix. In order to meet this challenge, plasticizers (P) and superplasticizers (SP) for concrete are used with various effects which are designed to reduce the yield value and plastic viscosity. To check the technical efficiency of admixtures P and SP with different chemical bases, the main objective of this research was to investigate the influence of raw and ground CFA on the rheological properties and other side effects of admixtures, such as the amount of air in the mixture and the amount of heat of hydration. The use of P, particularly SP, effectively improves the workability of the mortar containing CFA, especially ground CFA. With these admixtures, it is possible to obtain mortars containing ground CFA with similar rheological properties to mortars without its addition. To obtain a specific workability of mortar with CFA, it is usually necessary to introduce a higher dose of P or SP than used for mortars without CFA. The presence of raw CFA does not alter the effectiveness of P and strongly reduces the effectiveness of SP. The reduced effectiveness of SP manifests primarily as a high workability lost. The presence of ground CFA does not change the effectiveness of P (or is higher). The effectiveness of the superplasticizer SNF (with a chemical base of naphthalene sulfonate) and PE (with a chemical base of polycarboxylate ether) is slightly lower or does not change. The effectiveness of the superplasticizer SMF (with a chemical base of melamine sulfonates) is significantly lower. We found that the presence of ash affects the efficiency of P and SP, while processing via the grinding of ash makes the effect negligible. These results are novel in both their cognitive and practical aspects.

ABSTRACT

This research was inspired by the growing global shortage of natural aggregates. Different types of waste ceramics (apart from recycled concrete) are the most popular materials for the production of waste aggregates as possible substitutes for natural ones. The aim of this research was to analyse the efficiency of different aggregate mixes composed of waste and natural materials focusing on two waste ceramic aggregates, which were prepared concrete mixes based on specifically composed aggregates (blend of natural aggregate, porous and iron oxide-rich (red) waste ceramic aggregate, and dense, kaolin-based (white) waste ceramic aggregate). All aggregates were thoroughly tested before utilisation for concrete mix creation. Altogether, four blends of aggregates were prepared in order to prepare concrete mixes using a simplex experiment design. The mixes were then modified by adding various amounts of crimped steel fibre. Such properties of hardened steel fibre-reinforced concrete (SFRC) such as density, compressive strength, shear strength, ultrasound propagation velocity, dynamic modulus of elasticity, and limit of proportionality during flexural testing were of special interest. Tests were conducted according to European and Japanese standards. The achieved fibre-reinforced concretes were characterised by satisfactory strength characteristics, thereby enabling the substitution of traditional reinforcement. Strength classes according to the fib Model Code 2010 were assigned.

ABSTRACT

In this paper, the authors made an attempt to detect the fibre content and fibre spacing in a steel fibre reinforced concrete (SFRC) industrial floor. Two non-destructive testing (NDT) methods, an electromagnetic induction technique and a radar-based technique, were applied. The first method allowed us to detect the spacing in subsequent layers located in the thickness of the slab. The result of the second method was a 3D visualization of the detected fibre in the volume of concrete slab. The conducted tests showed aptitude and limitations of the applied methods in estimating fibre volume and spacing. The two techniques also allowed us to locate the areas with relatively low fibre concentration, which are very likely to be characterized by low mechanical properties.
