ABSTRACT

Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is a rare type of tumor characterized by spindle-shaped cells originating from mesenchymal tissue. This case series presents a collection of 14 intracranial solitary fibrous tumors treated between 2014 and 2022 in our institute in Bucharest, Romania. Through a systematic investigation, key aspects spanning the preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative phases of patient care were highlighted. Our study examines various factors including tumor location (which was very heterogeneous), size (median of 49 mm, ranging between 22 mm and 70 mm), surgical techniques employed, and recurrence rates. The data was analyzed using Python version 3.10 (Python Software Foundation, Wilmington, Delaware, United States). Gender disparities in SFT were noted, particularly the male-to-female ratio which was 5:9. The use of the Medical Research Council (MRC) Scale for Muscle Strength aided in evaluating severity and postoperative outcomes. GTR was achieved in nine out of 14 cases (64.28%), prolonging the period of recurrence-free survival.

ABSTRACT

Climate change, namely increased warming coupled with a rise in extreme events (e.g., droughts, storms, heatwaves), is negatively affecting forest ecosystems worldwide. In these ecosystems, growth dynamics and biomass accumulation are driven mainly by environmental constraints, inter-tree competition, and disturbance regimes. Usually, climate-growth relationships are assessed by linear correlation due to the simplicity and straightforwardness of modeling. However, applying this method may bias results, since the ecological and physiological responses of trees to environmental factors are non-linear, and usually bell-shaped. In the Eastern Carpathian, Norway spruce is at the southeasternmost edge of its natural occurrence; this region is thus potentially vulnerable to climate change. A non-linear assessment of climate-growth relationships using machine-learning techniques for Norway spruce in this area had not been conducted prior to this study. To address this knowledge gap, we analyzed a large tree-ring network from 158 stands, with over 3000 trees of varying age distributed along an elevational gradient. Our results showed that non-linearity in the growth-climate response of spruce was season-specific: temperatures from the previous autumn and current growing season, along with water availability during winter, induced a bell-shaped response. Moreover, we found that at low elevations, spruce growth was mainly limited by water availability in the growing season, while winter temperatures are likely to have had a slight influence along the entire elevational gradient. Furthermore, at elevations lower than 1400 m, spruce trees were also found to be sensitive to previous autumn water availability. Overall, our results shed new light on the response of Norway spruce to climate in the Carpathians, which may aid in management decisions.

ABSTRACT

Encoded by the CDX2 homeobox gene, the CDX2 protein assumes the role of a pivotal transcription factor localized within the nucleus of intestinal epithelial cells, orchestrating the delicate equilibrium of intestinal physiology while intricately guiding the precise development and differentiation of epithelial tissue. Emerging research has unveiled that positive immunohistochemical expression of this protein shows that the CDX2 gene exerts a potent suppressive impact on tumor advancement in colorectal cancer, impeding the proliferation and distant dissemination of tumor cells, while the inhibition or suppression of CDX2 frequently correlates with aggressive behavior in colorectal cancer. In this study, we conducted an immunohistochemical assessment of CDX2 expression on a cohort of 43 intraoperatively obtained tumor specimens from patients diagnosed with colon cancer at Colțea Clinical Hospital in Bucharest, between April 2019 and December 2023. Additionally, we shed light on the morphological diversity within colon tumors, uncovering varying differentiation grades within the same tumor, reflecting the variations in CDX2 expression as well as the genetic complexity underlying these tumors. Based on the findings, we developed an innovative immunohistochemical scoring system that addresses the heterogeneous nature of colon tumors. Comprehensive statistical analysis of CDX2 immunohistochemical expression unveiled significant correlations with known histopathological parameters such as tumor differentiation grades (p-value = 0.011) and tumor budding score (p-value = 0.002), providing intriguing insights into the complex involvement of the CDX2 gene in orchestrating tumor progression through modulation of differentiation processes, and highlighting its role in metastatic predisposition. The compelling correlation identified between CDX2 expression and conventional histopathological parameters emphasizes the prognostic significance of the CDX2 biomarker in colon cancer. Moreover, our novel immunohistochemical scoring system reveals a distinct subset of colon tumors exhibiting reserved prognostic outcomes, distinguished by their "mosaic" CDX2 expression pattern.

ABSTRACT

Background: Colorectal cancer (CRC) exhibits molecular and morphological diversity, involving genetic, epigenetic alterations, and disruptions in signaling pathways. This necessitates a comprehensive review synthesizing recent advancements in molecular mechanisms, established biomarkers, as well as emerging ones like CDX2 for enhanced CRC assessment. Material and Methods: This review analyzes the last decade's literature and current guidelines to study CRC's molecular intricacies. It extends the analysis beyond traditional biomarkers to include emerging ones like CDX2, examining their interaction with carcinogenic mechanisms and molecular pathways, alongside reviewing current testing methodologies. Results: A multi-biomarker strategy, incorporating both traditional and emerging biomarkers like CDX2, is crucial for optimizing CRC management. This strategy elucidates the complex interaction between biomarkers and the tumor's molecular pathways, significantly influencing prognostic evaluations, therapeutic decision-making, and paving the way for personalized medicine in CRC. Conclusions: This review proposes CDX2 as an emerging prognostic biomarker and emphasizes the necessity of thorough molecular profiling for individualized treatment strategies. By enhancing CRC treatment approaches and prognostic evaluation, this effort marks a step forward in precision oncology, leveraging an enriched understanding of tumor behavior.

ABSTRACT

In our study, we document the case of a 48-year-old patient who presented at our clinic with various neurological disturbances. Magnetic Resonance Imaging revealed the presence of an intraventricular meningioma located in the body of the left lateral ventricle measuring 60 mm in diameter. This tumor was classified as a giant meningioma, accompanied by a significant amount of digitiform-type edema. A surgical procedure was conducted, resulting in a gross total resection of the tumor. Histopathological analysis identified the tumor as a fibrous meningioma. Postoperative assessments, as well as follow-ups conducted at 3 months and 1 year post-surgery, indicated considerable neurological improvement. The patient exhibited a remission of hemiparesis and gait disturbances along with a marginal improvement in the status of expressive aphasia. This case report underscores the significance of achieving total and safe resection of the tumor and includes an analysis of various cases from the literature, particularly focusing on those that describe minimally invasive surgical approaches and highlight the benefits of radiosurgery in the treatment of giant intraventricular meningiomas.

ABSTRACT

This comprehensive study analyzes 346 surgically treated intracranial aneurysms, emphasizing the importance of understanding risk factors and prevalent characteristics in patients. Intracranial aneurysms, primarily of the saccular or berry type, significantly contribute to nontraumatic subarachnoid hemorrhages and demonstrate a rising incidence due to advances in imaging techniques. The study highlights a gender discrepancy in aneurysm occurrence and a higher prevalence in individuals over 30 years old. The research delves into various aspects, including aneurysm localization, diameter, neck dimensions, and rupture status, with a focus on the anterior communicating artery and middle communicating artery as predominant locations. Significant findings include the prevalence of ruptured aneurysms and the impact of arterial hypertension, atherosclerosis, obesity, and diabetes on aneurysm epidemiology. The study also investigates the occurrence of vasospasm, a significant factor in delayed morbidity and mortality in aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage. The utilization of the Glasgow Outcome Scale and other quantification scales aids in understanding the severity and postoperative outcomes of intracranial aneurysms. Challenges such as the incidence of reopenings and postoperative osteomyelitis are addressed, underlining the need for refined protocols and multidisciplinary approaches in treatment. The study's results contribute to the existing knowledge base on intracranial aneurysms, emphasizing the importance of ongoing research and tailored treatment strategies. The comprehensive nature of this analysis, covering preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative factors, provides valuable insights into the complex interplay of risk factors and clinical outcomes in patients with intracranial aneurysms.

ABSTRACT

Subependymomas are benign tumors of the ventricles that grow from the ventricular wall into the cerebrospinal fluid spaces within the brain, obstructing the flow of the cerebrospinal fluid and causing obstructive hydrocephalus. It is estimated that ependymomas represent between 0.2% and 0.7% of all intracranial tumors. They arise most frequently in the fourth ventricle (50-60%) and the lateral ventricles (30-40%). We present the case of a 50-year-old patient, previously diagnosed with an intraventricular process, admitted in our clinic. At neurological examination, the patient was cooperative, bradylalic, and bradypsychic, with right hemiparesis, postural and balance disorders, and occasionally sphincteric incontinence. MRI with contrast described a left intraventricular tumor, in the frontal horn of the left lateral ventricle with homogeneous appearance, with a maximum diameter of 50 mm and base of insertion at the adjacent ependyma of the foramen of Monro, which determined obstructive hydrocephalus. Total resection of the left intraventricular cerebral tumor was achieved. Histopathological analysis revealed a subependymoma. Postoperative recovery was slowly favorable, with significant neurological improvement. At neurological examination at three-month follow-up, the patient's right hemiparesis and unsystematized balance disorders improved. A contrast-enhanced CT scan was performed, highlighting left frontal sequelae hypodensity corresponding to the operated tumor, enlarged left lateral ventricle without active hydrocephalus, and no sign of tumor recurrence. At six-month follow-up, clinico-radiologic findings coincide with those from three-month follow-up. Subependymomas are slow-growing (grade 1) tumors and generally have a favorable prognosis. Unfortunately, due to their anatomical level, multiple complications can arise, caused from obstructive hydrocephalus complications, such as cognitive dysfunction and incontinence. Tumor resection should be complete, a successful operation being a challenge for every neurosurgeon.

ABSTRACT

Climate change is affecting forest ecosystems globally, in particular through warming as well as increases in the frequency and intensity of extreme events. Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) is one of the most important coniferous tree species in Europe. In recent extremely dry years in Central Europe, spruce suffered and large dieback has been observed. In parts of Eastern Europe, however, no large-scale decline in spruce has been reported so far, though anticipated changes in climate pose the question how the future of these forests may look like. To assess the current state of spruce forests in Eastern Europe, we established a tree-ring network consisting of 157 Norway spruce chronologies (from >3000 trees) of different ages distributed along elevational transects in the Eastern Carpathians, Romania. We evaluated early warning signals of climate change-induced stress, i.e. (1) growth decline, (2) increased sensitivity of tree growth (assessed over the statistics first-order autocorrelation and standard deviation), and (3) increased growth synchrony. A pronounced growth decline was observed over the last two decades, which was strongest in younger stands and at lower elevations. However, growth sensitivity and synchrony did not show consistent patterns, suggesting that forest decline may not be immediately imminent. Overall, our findings highlight an increased vulnerability of spruce in the Eastern Carpathians. With ongoing climate change, spruce dieback may be expected in this part of Europe as well.

ABSTRACT

To enhance our understanding of forest carbon sequestration, climate change mitigation and drought impact on forest ecosystems, the availability of high-resolution annual forest growth maps based on tree-ring width (TRW) would provide a significant advancement to the field. Site-specific characteristics, which can be approximated by high-resolution Earth observation by satellites (EOS), emerge as crucial drivers of forest growth, influencing how climate translates into tree growth. EOS provides information on surface reflectance related to forest characteristics and thus can potentially improve the accuracy of forest growth models based on TRW. Through the modelling of TRW using EOS, climate and topography data, we showed that species-specific models can explain up to 52 % of model variance (Quercus petraea), while combining different species results in relatively poor model performance (R2 = 13 %). The integration of EOS into models based solely on climate and elevation data improved the explained variance by 6 % on average. Leveraging these insights, we successfully generated a map of annual TRW for the year 2021. We employed the area of applicability (AOA) approach to delineate the range in which our models are deemed valid. The calculated AOA for the established forest-type models was 73 % of the study region, indicating robust spatial applicability. Notably, unreliable predictions predominantly occurred in the climate margins of our dataset. In conclusion, our large-scale assessment underscores the efficacy of combining climate, EOS and topographic data to develop robust models for mapping annual TRW. This research not only fills a critical void in the current understanding of forest growth dynamics but also highlights the potential of integrated data sources for comprehensive ecosystem assessments.

ABSTRACT

Low-Grade Gliomas (LGGs) represent a diverse group of brain tumors originating from glial cells, characterized by their unique histopathological and molecular features. This article offers a comprehensive exploration of LGGs, shedding light on their subtypes, histological and molecular aspects. By delving into the World Health Organization's grading system, 5th edition, various specificities were added due to an in-depth understanding of emerging laboratory techniques, especially genomic analysis. Moreover, treatment modalities are extensively discussed. The degree of surgical resection should always be considered according to postoperative quality of life and cognitive status. Adjuvant therapies focused on chemotherapy and radiotherapy depend on tumor grading and invasiveness. In the current literature, emerging targeted molecular therapies are well discussed due to their succinctly therapeutic effect; in our article, those therapies are summarized based on posttreatment results and possible adverse effects. This review serves as a valuable resource for clinicians, researchers, and medical professionals aiming to deepen their knowledge on LGGs and enhance patient care.

With the inexorable aging of the global populace, neurodegenerative diseases (NDs) like Alzheimer's disease (AD), Parkinson's disease (PD), and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) pose escalating challenges, which are underscored by their socioeconomic repercussions. A pivotal aspect in addressing these challenges lies in the elucidation and application of biomarkers for timely diagnosis, vigilant monitoring, and effective treatment modalities. This review delineates the quintessence of biomarkers in the realm of NDs, elucidating various classifications and their indispensable roles. Particularly, the quest for novel biomarkers in AD, transcending traditional markers in PD, and the frontier of biomarker research in ALS are scrutinized. Emergent susceptibility and trait markers herald a new era of personalized medicine, promising enhanced treatment initiation especially in cases of SOD1-ALS. The discourse extends to diagnostic and state markers, revolutionizing early detection and monitoring, alongside progression markers that unveil the trajectory of NDs, propelling forward the potential for tailored interventions. The synergy between burgeoning technologies and innovative techniques like -omics, histologic assessments, and imaging is spotlighted, underscoring their pivotal roles in biomarker discovery. Reflecting on the progress hitherto, the review underscores the exigent need for multidisciplinary collaborations to surmount the challenges ahead, accelerate biomarker discovery, and herald a new epoch of understanding and managing NDs. Through a panoramic lens, this article endeavors to provide a comprehensive insight into the burgeoning field of biomarkers in NDs, spotlighting the promise they hold in transforming the diagnostic landscape, enhancing disease management, and illuminating the pathway toward efficacious therapeutic interventions.

ABSTRACT

The pituitary gland, a puzzling medical subject up until the 20th century, had its early pathologies first documented in the 19th century by Pierre Marie and Hutchinson, where the gland's meaningful study was hindered by its hard-to-reach location. This paper revisits the pioneering work of Romanian doctors such as Gheorghe Marinescu, Nicolae Paulescu, and Grigore T. Popa in surgical techniques targeting the pituitary gland. Marinescu's 1892 experiment, albeit unsuccessful, laid the groundwork for future research in this area. Before Paulescu, surgical attempts could be classified into three types: oral, cranial, and sphenopalatine fossa approaches-all of which were notably dangerous and often resulted in fatal bleeding. Paulescu was the first to successfully and safely perform a complete in vivo hypophysectomy, opting for an innovative subtemporal method. He also conducted extensive research over four years to identify the gland's essential functions. Later, a 1938 study by Popa and Harris demonstrated a temporal approach to the hypothalamo-hypophysial region in a rabbit. These groundbreaking contributions significantly influenced the trajectory of pituitary gland surgery.

ABSTRACT

This article presents a comprehensive review on migraine, a prevalent neurological disorder characterized by chronic headaches, by focusing on their pathogenesis and treatment advances. By examining molecular markers and leveraging imaging techniques, the research identifies key mechanisms and triggers in migraine pathology, thereby improving our understanding of its pathophysiology. Special emphasis is given to the role of calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) in migraine development. CGRP not only contributes to symptoms but also represents a promising therapeutic target, with inhibitors showing effectiveness in migraine management. The article further explores traditional medical treatments, scrutinizing the mechanisms, benefits, and limitations of commonly prescribed medications. This provides a segue into an analysis of emerging therapeutic strategies and their potential to enhance migraine management. Finally, the paper delves into neuromodulation as an innovative treatment modality. Clinical studies indicating its effectiveness in migraine management are reviewed, and the advantages and limitations of this technique are discussed. In summary, the article aims to enhance the understanding of migraine pathogenesis and present novel therapeutic possibilities that could revolutionize patient care.

ABSTRACT

The Golgi apparatus plays a central role in protein sorting, modification and trafficking within cells; its dysregulation has been implicated in various cancers including those affecting the GI tract. This review highlights two Golgi target proteins, namely GOLPH3 and GOLGA proteins, from this apparatus as they relate to gastroenterological cancers. GOLPH3-a highly conserved protein of the trans-Golgi network-has become a key player in cancer biology. Abnormal expression of GOLPH3 has been detected in various gastrointestinal cancers including gastric, colorectal and pancreatic cancers. GOLPH3 promotes tumor cell proliferation, survival, migration and invasion via various mechanisms including activating the PI3K/Akt/mTOR signaling pathway as well as altering Golgi morphology and vesicular trafficking. GOLGA family proteins such as GOLGA1 (golgin-97) and GOLGA7 (golgin-84) have also been implicated in gastroenterological cancers. GOLGA1 plays an essential role in protein trafficking within the Golgi apparatus and has been associated with poor patient survival rates and increased invasiveness; GOLGA7 maintains Golgi structure while having been shown to affect protein glycosylation processes. GOLPH3 and GOLGA proteins play a pivotal role in gastroenterological cancer, helping researchers unlock molecular mechanisms and identify therapeutic targets. Their dysregulation affects various cellular processes including signal transduction, vesicular trafficking and protein glycosylation, all contributing to tumor aggressiveness and progression.

ABSTRACT

Classic polyarteritis nodosa (PAN) is a vasculitis with systemic manifestations that is characterized by inflammatory and necrotizing lesions affecting medium and small muscular arteries, most frequently at the bifurcation of the vessels. These lesions lead to the formation of microaneurysms, hemorrhaging ruptured aneurysms, thrombosis, and, consequently, ischemia or organ infarction. Background and Objectives: We present a complex clinical case of a patient with a late diagnosis of polyarteritis nodosa with multiorgan involvement. Materials and Methods: The 44-year-old patient, in an urban environment, presented on her own in the emergency room for acute ischemia phenomena and forearm and right-hand compartment syndrome, requiring surgical decompression in the Plastic Surgery Clinic. Results: Significant inflammatory syndrome is noted, alongside severe normocytic hypochromic iron deficiency anemia, nitrogen retention syndrome, hyperkalemia, hepatic syndrome, and immunological disturbances: absence of cANCA, pANCA, anti Scl 70 Ac, antinuclear Ac, and anti dDNA Ac, as well as a low C3 fraction of the plasmatic complement system. The morphological aspect described in the right-hand skin biopsy correlated with the clinical data supports the diagnosis of PAN. Conclusions: The viral form of PAN seems to be individualized as a distinct entity, requiring early, aggressive medication.

ABSTRACT

Radical cystectomy represents the standard surgical treatment in case of muscle invasive bladder cancer. During the last two decades a change in the surgical approach of the MIBC has been observed, from open surgery to minimal invasive surgery. Nowadays, in the majority of tertiary urologic centers, robotic radical cystectomy with intracorporeal urinary diversion represents the standard surgical approach. The aim of the current study is to describe in detail the surgical steps of the robotic radical cystectomy and the reconstruction of the urinary diversion and to present our experience. From the surgical point of view, the most important principles which should guide the surgeon when performing this procedure are: 1. Good working place and access both to the pelvis and abdomen and use of the "technique of spaces" 2. Respect the oncological principles of the surgery with attention to the margin resection and limitation of the risk of tumour spillage; 3. Attention to both the ureter and bowel manipulation in order to avoid grasping lesions; 4. High care in realisation of the uretero-ileal anastomosis so that good long term functional results are achieved. We analyzed our database of 213 patients diagnosed with muscle invasive bladder cancer who underwent minimally invasive radical cystectomy (laparoscopic and robotic approaches) between January 2010 and December 2022. We identified 25 patients for whom the robotic approach was used to perform the surgery. Despite being one of the most challenging urologic surgical procedures, with careful preparation and training, the surgeon is able to achieve the maximum oncological and functional results by performing robotic radical cystectomy with intracorporeal urinary.

ABSTRACT

Background In Romania, as in other parts of the world, the family doctor is the first to make contact with a healthy patient and is also the first to notice even the smallest pathological changes. In the context of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic, the patient's communication with the family doctor became even closer and some behavioral changes could be easily noticed. Objective To assess the symptoms of anxiety and depression in the Romanian population using social media platforms in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods We conducted an anonymous, web-based cross-sectional survey consisting of 31 questions related to general characteristics (age, gender, education, inhabitancy, residence, smoking status, and alcohol consumption) and adapted GAD-7 (7-item General Anxiety Disorders questionnaire) and PHQ-9 (9-item Patient Health Questionnaire). This questionnaire was sent to volunteers in an electronic format through a social network (Facebook, Twitter). The data collected were statistically processed using IBM SPSS v25.0 (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY). The inclusion criteria were age over 18 years and no history of chronic disease. The exclusion criteria consisted of the absence of a mental illness diagnosis. Results From the 1254 respondents, 1232 cases were selected for statistical analysis after applying the exclusion criteria. The mean age was 35.94 (SD = 11.4, 95%CI=10.9-11.9) with a minimum of 18 years and a maximum of 97 years. Eighty-four point nine percent (84.9%; N=1046) of all study participants are female and 79.13% (N= 975) live in the urban area. A total of 188 (15.25%) were diagnosed with COVID-19 of which 31 (16.66%) were male and 157 (15%) were female. N=170 (13.8%) reported moderate symptoms of anxiety during the last two weeks before the survey while N=96 (7.8%) had severe anxiety. Twenty-two point two percent (22.2%; N=274) of the participants reported moderate symptoms of depression while 10.1% (N=125) had moderately severe symptoms and 6.6% (N=81) could be diagnosed with severe depression. A greater likelihood of screening for depression diagnosis was associated with ages between 25 and 34 years (OR=0.90, 95%CI=0.86-0.94, P<.001), 35 and 44 years (OR=0.88, 95%CI=0.84-0.93, P<.001), and 45 and 54 years (OR=0.87, 95%CI=0.82-0.92, P<.001). Also, a tendency was observed for women to be more prone to high levels of anxiety (OR=1.21, 95%CI=1.08-1.35, P< .001) and depression (OR=2.16, 95%CI=1.51-308, P< .005). Conclusions Regarding the high prevalence of depression and anxiety, especially in women, appropriate measures for the risk categories should be applied. In the new social context created by the COVID-19 pandemic, screening for psychiatric and psychological disorders should be performed by telemedicine.

In the context of forecasted climate change scenarios, the growth of forest tree species at their distribution margin is crucial to adapt current forest management strategies. Analyses of beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) growth have shown high plasticity, but easternmost beech populations have been rarely studied. To describe the response of the marginal beech population to the climate in the far east sites of its distribution, we first compiled new tree ring width chronologies. Then we analyzed climate-growth relationships for three marginal beech populations in the Republic of Moldova. We observed a relatively high growth rate in the marginal populations compared to core distribution sites. Our analyses further revealed a distinct and significant response of beech growth to all climatic variables, assessing for the first time the relationship between growth and vapor pressure deficit (VPD) which described how plant growth responds to drought. These results highlight that accumulated water deficit is an essential limiting factor of beech growth in this region. In conclusion, beech growth in the easternmost marginal population is drought-limited, and the sensitivity to VPD will need to be considered in future studies to update the forest management of other economic and ecologically important species.

One of the most important proxy archives for past climate variation is tree rings. Tree-ring parameters offer valuable knowledge regarding how trees respond and adapt to environmental changes. Trees encode all environmental changes in different tree-ring parameters. In this study, we analyzed how air temperature is encoded in different Norway spruce tree-ring proxies along an altitude gradient in an intramountain valley of the Carpathians. The study area, in the Gheorgheni region, Romania (Eastern Carpathians), has a mountain climate with a frequent temperature inversion in winter. The climate−growth relationship was analyzed for two contrasting altitudes: low elevation, i.e., below 1000 m a.s.l., and high elevation, i.e., above 1500 m a.s.l. Two local weather stations, one in the valley and the other on the upper part of the mountains, provide daily temperatures (Joseni­750 m a.s.l. and Bucin­1282 m a.s.l.). The bootstrap Pearson correlation between cumulative daily temperature data and three tree-ring proxies (tree-ring width­TRW, basal area increment­BAI, and blue intensity­BI) was computed for each series. The results show that elevation modulates the climate response pattern in the case of BI, and remains relatively similar for TRW and BAI. The winter temperature's positive influence on spruce growth was observed in both TRW and BAI chronologies. Additionally, the BAI chronology highlights a positive relationship with summer temperature. The highest correlation coefficient (r = 0.551, p < 0.05, n = 41) was recorded between BI residual chronology from high elevation series and summer/autumn temperature from the upper-part weather station for a cumulative period of 59 days (the second half of August to the beginning of October). Our results show that, for this intramountain valley of the Eastern Carpathians, different tree-ring proxies capture different climate signals.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this retrospective study was to describe the long-term outcomes and the survival rate in patients who underwent neoadjuvant therapy for rectal cancer. This is a retrospective study undertaken in a surgery department of an oncological clinical hospital. The study evaluated the data of all patients treated for rectal cancer between January 2014 and December 2018. Results: Of 126 patients, thirteen patients with mean age of 58.3 years had a pathological complete response and were treated with neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy. Ten patients (76.9%) underwent treatment with 45 Gy. One patient was treated with 51 Gy, one with 49.3 Gy, and 12 patients were treated daily with 1.8 Gy. One patient underwent a short course of 5 days with 5 Gy. Patients diagnosed and treated in 2016 had a survival rate of 54 to 57 months, in 2017 42 to 48 months and in 2018 29 to 34 months. For two patients with final pCR, the adjuvant treatment was given and the wait and watch policy was applied. Both patients were females, aged 51 and 66 years (mean age 58.5 years). CONCLUSION: The frequency of pCR was similar to that in other published studies. The survival rate in our cohort was high, death occurring in two cases, one being the oldest patient in the study. We concluded that the long-term oncological control is excellent in patients who receive neoadjuvant treatment leading to improved OS, improved quality of life, and decreasing the recurrence rates.
