ABSTRACT

We introduce a procedure to calibrate an inexpensive, commercial camera for optical power measurements. This allows the use of the camera as a very sensitive optical power meter that is able to measure powers down to the femtowatt level. A windowing technique, based on the selection of a region of interest from the total sensor area, is used to maintain a good signal-to-noise ratio over a large range of the measured optical powers. The increase of the exposure time of the camera shifts its detection limit to lower powers. Using this calibration procedure and the windowing technique, we measured 25 fW of optical power with a common complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor camera.

ABSTRACT

We report the formation of surface self-written waveguides by means of surface pyrolitons in lithium niobate. By a specific orientation of the crystal axis the quasi-local slow photorefractive response of lithium niobate was used to induce a self-confined beam exactly at the crystal-air interface. The mode profile of the photo-induced waveguide is strongly asymmetric due to the interface presence.

ABSTRACT

In this paper we are introducing a new single shot method for measuring the nonlinear refractive index of materials in a simple interferometric pump-probe configuration. The theoretical model proposed for extracting the nonlinear refractive index from the experimental fringe pattern and the experimental configuration are presented and discussed. The results obtained by this method are in good agreement with that obtained on the same sample using the conventional Z-scan method.
