ABSTRACT

A case of a 38-year-old man with acute ocular manifestation and severe dermatological lesions of Stevens-Johnson syndrome is presented. Intensive ophthalmological care may prevent long-term complications such as symblepharon, dry eye syndrome and corneal lesions.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To elaborate a set of contact allergens present in eye drops which could precipitate allergic conjunctivitis. Such set has not been yet described in literature. METHODS: Basing on the most frequently used preparations, a set of 15 different substances: drugs and preservatives, was prepared to test the patients. RESULTS: Among the 97 persons who underwent the testing, positive results were observed in 35.5%. The hypersensitivity was found for 11 of the allergens, the most often for neomycin, gentamycin, merthiolate, benzalkonium chloride, and then consecutively for kanamycin, sulfathiazole, oxytetracycline, chloramphenicol, penicillin, boric acid and parabens.

ABSTRACT

A new composition of gel was applied in ultrasonographic diagnostic examinations. Estimation of gel was based on the following parameter--attenuation in dB per cm at varying frequency. Considering this parameter the newly composed gel was compared with gels used so far in diagnostics.

ABSTRACT

A newly composed gel was examined with a view of determining its usefulness for gonioscopy and laser microsurgery. It was found, that it did not exert any adverse effect on ocular tissue, it displayed perfect transparency and proper consistency facilitating manual operation. Experimental procedures confirmed its clinical usefulness.

ABSTRACT

The aim of the study was to evaluate the usefulness of hydrophilic base with pilocarpine hydrochloride. Comparisons were made between releasing rate of pilocarpine hydrochloride from hydrophilic and lipophilic bases into water and artificial tears. It was found that pilocarpine hydrochloride was released in the amount 30-40 times greater from hydrogel bases compared to lipophilic. The releasing rate of drugs from hydrogel ointments increases with the increased colloid concentration and with decreased of drug concentration in the base.

ABSTRACT

Nuclear bodies (NBs) are intranuclear structures described in normal and pathologically altered cells of humans and animals. The NBs are 0.3-1.5 microns round structures. Their function is unknown. In the present paper, we describe NBs in the nuclei of the conjunctiva epithelial cells in one patient with cicatricial pemphigoid (CP) and in an another one without conjunctival pathology. We observed increase in the frequency of the NBs of type I occurring in the conjunctival cells in CP patient as compared to the healthy control. This is the first report to describe nuclear bodies in the human conjunctiva.

ABSTRACT

The conjunctiva's materials from patients with cicatricial pemphigoid were examined histopathologically and ultrastructurally. Non specific changes were shown at the cellular level: leukocytes infiltrations and increase in the amount of connective tissue which cause the scars. Ultrastructurally increase in the number of collagen fibres and disorders in the structure of basal membrane of epithelium were shown. Pathological changes were located mostly in lamina propria of tunica mucosae.

ABSTRACT

Among 11 patients aged 9-79 years with diagnosed pemphigoid 5 were men and 6 women. Three persons exhibited only some conjunctival irritation and conjunctival adhesions, the remaining 8--besides some shallowness of the fornices--showed also corneal changes. Six patients showed signs of the dry-eye syndrome and 3--symptoms of secondary glaucoma. General treatment (Avlosulfon, encorton) was applied in 8 patients.
