ABSTRACT
Although the physician assistant (PA) profession is slightly more than 30 years old, in its short history, it has had a significant impact on the delivery of quality medical care in the United States. There are approximately 34,000 PAs currently in clinical practice. The purpose of this article is to describe the role physician assistants play in the delivery of medical care and the benefits they bring to the health system and to patients.
