ABSTRACT

Data pointing to possible combination of schizophrenia with epilepsy and the convulsive syndrome are analyzed. It has been found that schizophrenia starts very infrequently from a convulsive seizure, and still less frequently turns into epilepsy. Such a conversion was observed by the authors only in 4 out of 15,460 schizophrenia cases: this figure is much lower than the incidence of both schizophrenia and epilepsy among healthy population.

ABSTRACT

A study of the population constants in 499 patients with unfavorable forms of epilepsy demonstrated a relative autonomy in the development of the epileptic process. This process is demonstrated by the frequency of seizures rather than by the age periods. Some important parameters of the population characteristics of the epileptic disease involve the character of the development of the convulsive process, correlation of convulsive and nonconvulsive forms, and correlation between the frequency of seizures and duration of the epileptic process.

ABSTRACT

The results of 151 autopsies are analysed depending on the methods of treatment of epileptic patients in separate periods from 1952 up to 1974. It is established that comprehensive therapeutical methods and prophylaxis of an epileptic status have led to a qualitative change of causes of lethal outcomes--a decrease of a number of lethal cases in an epileptic status and an increase of the number of deaths from intercurrent diseases on the background of an increase of duration of the patient's life. The assumption is made that in lethal cases in an epileptic seizure pathology of cardiac muscle plays a great role.

ABSTRACT

The authors studied the activity of blood transaminase in 50 epileptic patients during different clinical periods--interattack period, prior to attacks and following different by severity paroxysms. It was found that there was increase in the transaminase activity due to the occurence of seizures. It is considered that at the basis of such changes are hemodynamical changes due to seizures and changes caused by long-term treatment with anti convulsive drugs.

ABSTRACT

The paper is concerned with the general activity of LDH and the spectre of its isoenzymes which was determined by different techniques in the blood serum of adult epileptic patients, epileptic children and adolescents between seizures, as well as in adult patients during and at different periods after covulsive fits. It was established that the general activity of LDH and the percent content of isoenzymes LDH-I in the blood serum of adult epileptic patients is less compared to epileptic children and adolescents and normals. During convulsive fits the general activity of LDH and LDH-I in the blood serum increases, which is indicative of an intensification of glycolytic processes.
