ABSTRACT

According to medical literature, the frontal recess' intricate physical structure resembles an inverted funnel. The anatomical structure is not distant from the frontal ostium. Surgery requires a good understanding of the frontal recess architecture because of the intricate anatomy of this relatively small area. The pathophysiological characteristics of frontal sinusitis and the process of sinus ventilation through the sinus ostium have been linked, according to medical literature. Medical studies show that one of the most important factors affecting the amount of drainage in the frontal sinuses is the size of the frontal sinus ostium. Inflammation brought on by frontal recess cells can frequently affect the airflow in the frontal sinuses. The drainage channel of the frontal sinus is stated as narrowing in the current investigation as an observed phenomenon. The aim of this study was to examine the frontal recess changes and how they might affect the emergence of frontal sinusitis. The classification of frontal recesses according to their various categories was the study's principal finding. The investigation of the causal elements that resulted in the development of frontal sinusitis was the study's secondary goal. In a hospital setting, a cohort of 200 patients with sinonasal disorders underwent a retrospective observational research. Over the course of a year, from July 2021 to June 2022, the study participants had evaluations at a tertiary care center. 200 CT PNS images of individuals who fit certain inclusion and exclusion criteria were examined in this study. Using the chi-square test, the study looked into the relationships between several risk factors, including age, gender, and the type of frontal recess. The presence of frontal sinusitis served as the main outcome indicator. This study included a total of 200 participants with a mean age was 43.38 years (± 10.69). There was 146 (73%) male and 54 (27%) female were in the study. Type I frontal recess in 50 (25%), type II in 82 (41%), type III in 24 (12%) and type IV in 18 (9%) patients. The association of age (P = 0.141) and gender (P = 0.345) with frontal sinusitis was not significant. The statistical association between type of frontal recess and frontal sinusitis was statistically not significant. The association between age and the type of frontal recess was found to be statistically significant by Fischer's exact test with P value of 0.012 (< 0.05), whereas gender was not associated with the type of frontal recess by the same test. It is difficult to overstate the significance of the terms frontal recess, frontal sinusitis, and sinus ostium in this particular medical context. This article was a retrospective observational study that investigates the connection between frontal sinusitis and changes in the frontal recess in patients receiving care at tertiary medical facilities.

ABSTRACT

Despite the National Occupational Safety and Legislation Act 2020's implementation, reports of workplace accidents are rising in India. Various ear, nose, and throat conditions have been linked to a wide range of physico-chemical variables. Due to a lack of training, inadequate knowledge, a lack of awareness of occupational health and safety risks, or a lack of accessibility to or use of personal protective equipment (PPE), sculptors are frequently exposed to a variety of physical, compound and unplanned risks, chemical, and accidental hazards. The study aimed to assess the various ear, nose and throat manifestations like noise induced hearing loss, occupational rhinitis and non-infectious pharyngitis among the sculptors working in the southern part of Chennai. This observational study was performed in a total of 110 sculptors. Demographic data like age, education, duration of occupation, use of PPE like face mask, ear plug during work hours, whether sculpting is a family occupation or first generation sculptor. A detailed history and thorough ENT examination was performed with pure tone audiometry (PTA), diagnostic nasal endoscopy (DNE) and videolaryngoscopy (VLS). If any problem is detected they will be treated accordingly. Most of them (70%) were in the age group of 21-40 years but 71% of them are sculptors for more than 15 years which infers introduction to the occupation at an early age. The reason for this could be more than 80% of them possessed the heritage of sculpting as their family occupation. Duration of occupation was significantly associated with chronic rhinitis (P value was 0.002) and NIHL (P value was 0.002) whereas education and use of PPE like face mask or ear plugs were not associated with ENT manifestations. This study focuses on the sculptors' working habits, their ignorance of safety precautions, and an assessment of the numerous ENT ailments. These manifestations showed a strong correlation to exposure time. To prevent the issues from becoming more severe, regular medical monitoring is required for early detection and intervention.

ABSTRACT

Senile deafness and hearing loss in adults over 50 are major public health issues as a result of the population's ageing demographic. Menopausal women tend to develop hearing loss, while no clear link has been found between the two. The purpose of this study was to determine how menopause and diabetes mellitus affects hearing loss. We assessed 158 menopausal women in total. Pure Tone Audiometry and HbA1c levels was measured, along with appropriate clinical history and examination. The association between those levels and hearing was researched by chi-square test. There were 158 study participants. Mean age of the study population was 50.5 (± 2.49) years. Onset and duration of hard of hearing was assessed in 41 patients (25.9%). 33% (N = 53) of the patients had history of Diabetes mellitus, of which 52.8% offered history of the disease for more than or equal to five years. On audiological assessment, 74.1% had no hearing loss (N = 117), 4.4% had unilateral sensorineural hearing loss (N = 7) and 21.5% had bilateral sensorineural hearing loss (N = 34). Statistics show that hearing loss is statistically connected with ageing and poor glycemic management. With chi square values of 9.629 and P value 0.002 found a significant correlation between ageing and hearing loss. Poor glycemic control is significantly associated with hearing loss with a chi-square value of 4.304 and P value 0.038. Poor glycemic control and menopause is found to be strongly associated with sensorineural hearing loss. Further prospective, hormonal studies including larger population is recommended.

ABSTRACT

A type-I hypersensitivity reaction of the nasal mucosa, allergic rhinitis (AR) is distinguished by nasal obstruction, watery rhinorrhea, sneezing, and throat, mouth, and nose irritation. It is assumed that allergies can affect the inner, middle, or outer ear. Many writers have studied the relationship between allergic rhinitis and otitis media. Most of them concur that bacterial infection and Eustachian tube obstruction are significant risk factors for the development of otitis media with effusion in addition to allergies. One hundred study participants had a full clinical evaluation that included an ENT history and examination. In the ENT OPD, the audiological examination was conducted using Pure Tone Audiometry (PTA) and Impedance Audiometry (IA). At frequencies of 250 and 8000 Hz, respectively, the bone and air conduction thresholds were studied. The commercially available "AT235 INTERACOUSTICS" tympanometer was used for the tympanometry procedure. With pressure variations between + 200 and - 300daPa, tympanometry was carried out employing a 226 Hz probe tone. Mean age of study population was 52.16 and 24% each in age group 51 to 60 and 61 to 70 years respectively. 73 (73%) were male and 27 (27%) were female. 46% of allergic rhinitis study population was found to have normal hearing and 43% had mild conductive hearing loss. Most common type of impedance curve was A type (47%). Patients having acute phase of allergy with symptoms less than 3 months had more ear block and secretory otitis media. Patients with duration more than 3 months had resolved secretory otitis media hence the hearing was normal in 33 cases and 11 had mild conductive hearing loss. This study was concluded that there is correlation between the severity of the hearing loss and duration of allergic rhinitis.

ABSTRACT

This study was conducted to evaluate the outcomes of closed reduction of different types of nasal bone fractures depending on time between onset of injury and reduction and comparing the outcomes of early closed reduction (within 6 h) of nasal bone fracture with late closed reduction (after 2 weeks). A hospital based Prospective cohort type of study was conducted among cases of nasal bone fracture attending the outpatient department of Otorhinolaryngology at Chettinad Hospital and Research Institute, Chennai during the months of August 2021 to January 2022. A total of 54 participants were included in the study. Primary outcome was to assess the effectiveness of closed reduction of different types of nasal bone fractures postoperatively. The second objective was to compare the outcomes of early closed reduction (within 6 h) of nasal bone fracture with late closed reduction (after 2 weeks). Using chi square test, the association of factors such as age, sex, mode of injury, external framework deformity, type of fracture and treatment was analyzed with outcome measures such as post op degree of deviation, arch irregularity, malalignment, bony irregularity, bony displacement, olfactory disturbances and result. We analyzed the sample data statistically and measured the outcomes which showed that post operatively after undergoing closed reduction, some degree of deviation was present in 17(31.48./.), arch irregularity present in 12(22.2./.), malalignment in 11(20.37./.), bony irregularity in 24(44.44./.), bony displacement in 19(35.19./.), olfactory disturbances in 2(3.70./.). Comparing the outcome factors between early and late reduction, we found that the outcome was better in early closed reduction when compared with late closed reduction. Among the 54 patients studied, the results of closed reduction were found to be excellent in 27(50./.), Fair in 16(29.63./.), Good in 10(18.52./.) and poor in 1(1.85./.) We could thus conclude from this study that early closed reduction of nasal bone fracture gave better results than a late closed reduction in terms of post operative deformity, arch irregularity, malalignment, bony irregularity, bony displacement and olfactory disturbances.

ABSTRACT

Epithelioid hemangioma is an uncommon benign vascular lesion which most commonly appears as a nodular lesion in the head and neck area. Here, we present a rare case of nodular swelling in the dorsal aspect of the tongue in a 30 year old male for the past 3 months. Excision of growth was done and histopathological examination revealed epithelioid hemangioma of the tongue. Patient is on regular follow up and there is no evidence of recurrence. ABSTRACT

The known species of Allacta Saussure Zehntner, 1895 in India are reviewed. Three new species, A. jcenpro sp. nov., A. vellimalai sp. nov., and A. kollimalai sp. nov., are described. All are placed under hamifera species group. The new species can be differentiated from other members of hamifera species group by the pronotal and facial markings, the structure of the male genitalia and other morphological characters. Additional reports to A. kalakadensis Prabakaran Senraj 2019 and A. figurata (Walker, 1871) are provided. A key to the known species of Indian Allacta is provided.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: To analyze the pattern of cleft lip and cleft palate cases and their operative management at a tertiary-care hospital. METHODS: Data of all patients (<18 year) with cleft lip and cleft palate operated between 2011 and 2016 were extracted from the records and analyzed. RESULTS: The final analysis included 1643 cases (60.9% males). Mean (SD) age at the time of surgery was 8.9 (10.17) years. Left-sided cleft clip was more common. Complete hard palate type of cleft palate on left was present in 787 (47.90%). Primary Cleft Palate repair was most common procedure (492, 29.9% children, followed by primary lip nose unilateral in 458 (27.9%) and lip nose revision in 298 (21.1%). CONCLUSIONS: Data on age at presentation and procedures used for correction of cleft lip and cleft palate are presented.

ABSTRACT

In modern days, to enrich e-business, the websites are personalized for each user by understanding their interests and behavior. The main challenges of online usage data are information overload and their dynamic nature. In this paper, to address these issues, a WebBluegillRecom-annealing dynamic recommender system that uses web usage mining techniques in tandem with software agents developed for providing dynamic recommendations to users that can be used for customizing a website is proposed. The proposed WebBluegillRecom-annealing dynamic recommender uses swarm intelligence from the foraging behavior of a bluegill fish. It overcomes the information overload by handling dynamic behaviors of users. Our dynamic recommender system was compared against traditional collaborative filtering systems. The results show that the proposed system has higher precision, coverage, F1 measure, and scalability than the traditional collaborative filtering systems. Moreover, the recommendations given by our system overcome the overspecialization problem by including variety in recommendations.

BACKGROUND: PTEN gene at chromosomes 10q23.3 is a tumour suppressor gene that is inactivated in many types of human cancers. The known mechanisms of PTEN inactivation are rendered to mutation, epigenetic silencing by aberrant methylation or gene deletion. Although PTEN role has been documented in many cancers, PTEN alteration in papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) has not been fully elucidated. The aim of this study is to comprehensively investigate PTEN alterations in a large cohort of Middle Eastern papillary thyroid cancer by immunohistochemistry and fluorescent in situ hybridisation (FISH). METHODS: PTEN protein expression was analysed by immunohistochemistry in a tissue microarray (TMA) format in a large cohort of more than 1000 patients with papillary thyroid cancer. Copy number changes in PTEN were analysed by FISH and data were correlated with clinicopathological parameters along with survival analysis. RESULTS: PTEN inactivation reflected by complete absence of staining was seen in 24.5% of PTC samples, whereas PTEN deletion was seen only in 4.8% of the tested samples by FISH. No association was seen between PTEN loss of protein expression and PTEN gene deletion. However, interestingly, PTEN loss of expression was significantly associated with the follicular variant subset of papillary thyroid cancer. CONCLUSION: Our study confirmed that PTEN might have a role in pathogenesis in a subset of PTC. PTEN loss of protein expression is a more common event in follicular variant of papillary thyroid cancer. Lack of association between PTEN loss of protein expression and PTEN gene deletion might indicate that gene deletion may not be the sole cause for PTEN loss of expression and these results might raise the possibility of other mechanism such as promoter methylation-mediated gene silencing to be responsible for PTEN inactivation.

ABSTRACT

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: This study investigated the use of animals among the traditional healers in Theni district of Tamil Nadu, India. The data regarding the medicinal animals/animal products were documented and their usages were analyzed quantitatively. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Based on free list interviews with the traditional healers, we documented the medicinal usage of animals/animal products and calculated the indices such as informant consensus factor (Fic) to determine the consensus over the species for an illness category, as well as the Index Agreement on Remedies (IAR) to determine the extent of potential utilization of each species. RESULTS: In this study, 69 medicinal animals/animal products were documented with the help of standardized questionnaires among the local healers. The results were tabulated and Fic value for each illness category was calculated. Three illness categories viz., jaundice (milk of Capra aegagrus hircus), orthopedics (egg white and meat of Gallus gallus domesticus) and pediatrics (milk of Equus africanus asinus) had got high Fic values. Fifteen illness categories had moderate Fic values. Highly cited animals in these illness categories were: Rusa unicolor (antiemetic), Reticulitermes spp. (diabetes), flesh of Varanus benghalensis (oral ailments), milk (eye ailments, fever) and urine (antidote) of Homo sepians, meat of Trachypithecus johnii (respiratory ailments), various parts of C. aegagrus hircus (blood ailments, coolants, diarrhea, pulmonary and urinary ailments), flesh of Chamaeleon zeyalnica (neural ailments), meat of Passer domesticus (aphrodisiac), curd and dung of Bos primigenius taurus (dermatological ailments), meat of G. domesticus (musculo-skeletal disorders, analgesic), meat of Lissemys punctata (hemorrhoids), and Pherthima posthuma (psychological ailments). Six illness categories had low Fic values. CONCLUSION: This study indicated that the animals are still being used by the local healers of Theni district, to treat various illnesses. Cross-disciplinary approaches to explore the full potential of animal-derived medicines will help to improve the health of local people.

ABSTRACT

Data mining is a boon to many fields like bioinformatics for processing a vast amount of data. In our previous paper, we proposed a novel feature selection method for microarray data classification using Wavelet Power Spectrum (WPS). In this paper, we present optimisation techniques to improve the quality of the features thus selected and to select 'tight genes' from various cancer microarrays. The results show that 'tight genes' thus selected were more qualitative and could be used for a wide variety of data sets. Also, 'tight genes' thus selected in this mining process could be used with any existing classification approach.

AIMS: It is common for refraction to be measured using different testing methods in children, with much debate still ongoing on the preferred method. Therefore, we compared cycloplegic refraction measurements using three objective methods in a large cohort of children. METHODS: We present the findings from a total of 51 children who were recruited and examined as part of the Strabismus, Amblyopia and Refractive error in Singapore preschool children (STARS) study. Each child underwent a comprehensive eye examination, which included cycloplegic refraction using a hand-held autorefractor (Retinomax), a table mounted autorefractor (Canon FK-1) and streak retinoscopy. Spherical equivalent (SE) was calculated as (sphere + half of minus cylinder) and astigmatism was determined using the negative cylindrical component. RESULTS: The current study sample consisted of 29 boys and 22 girls aged between 24 and 72 months (mean age 52.3 months). The mean spherical equivalent (SE) using the table-mounted autorefractor (1.03 +/- 1.64 D) was not significantly different from the streak retinoscopy (1.09 +/- 1.58 D, p = 0.66). However, the mean SE using the hand-held Retinomax (0.80 +/- 1.43 D) was significantly different (more 'minus'p = 0.0004) to streak retinoscopy. The astigmatism measured using the hand held (-0.89 +/- 0.51 D) and table-mounted autorefractor (-0.83 +/- 0.61 D) were significantly greater than that obtained with streak retinoscopy (-0.58 +/- 0.56, p = 0.0003). CONCLUSIONS: The table-mounted autorefractor provided a reading more similar to that of streak retinoscopy than to that of the hand-held autorefractor. However, there were only small differences in mean SE (<0.32 D) between the hand-held Retinomax and the other methods, which will have implications in research investigations of refractive error.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: A feasibility study comparing retinal nerve fibre layer (RNFL) thickness values obtained with imaging devices against RNFL thickness measurements obtained histologically in a human eye. DESIGN: A single patient scheduled for orbital exenteration, who still possessed a healthy functioning eye. METHODS: Before surgery, the eye was imaged using optical coherence tomography (OCT) and scanning laser polarimetry (SLP). After orbital exenteration, the globe was sectioned, and 100 equidistant RNFL thickness measurements were obtained for each of four concentric rings centred on the optic disc, with diameters of 3.0, 3.5, 4.0, and 4.5 mm. RESULTS: RNFL thickness was found to be inversely related to the distance from the centre of the optic disc along each radial meridian. Peripapillary RNFL thickness was found comparable for histology, OCT, and SLP. RNFL thickness measured histologically confirmed a 'double hump' pattern, peaking at the superior and inferior poles. Histologically derived RNFL thickness (microm), at 3.0 and 3.5 mm diameter ring ranged between 30-135 and 25-115 respectively. In comparison, the 3.0 mm diameter GDx data ranged between 25 and 100, and the 3.4 mm diameter OCT data between 40 and 175. CONCLUSIONS: Imaging data appear qualitatively similar when compared to the histologically derived data. Quantitative differences may be partly due to scaling differences and histological artefacts. The histological analysis approach demonstrated in this study can potentially serve to validate imaging-derived data, as well as help improve our understanding of RNFL loss in glaucoma.

INTRODUCTION: The level of awareness among the Irish public regarding colorectal cancer (CRC) remains uncertain. This study aimed to characterise CRC knowledge levels among a cohort of Irish patients. METHODS: A survey evaluating CRC knowledge levels was distributed among outpatients at a gastroenterology clinic in a Dublin teaching hospital. RESULTS: In total, 472 surveys were distributed of which 465 (98.5%) were returned. Twenty-nine percent of respondents correctly judged CRC to be the commonest cause of cancer death among the options provided while 26% correctly judged the lifetime risk of CRC; 59% underestimated and 15% overestimated the risk. Most patients (91%) were willing to pay 300 euros for a prompt colonoscopy if recommended by their physician while 7% opted to wait 6 months for a free colonoscopy. CONCLUSIONS: There is a willingness to embrace CRC screening and to shoulder some of the financial burden that this entails.

ABSTRACT

Although some insights into the etiology of schizophrenia have been gained, an understanding of the illness at the molecular level remains elusive. Recent advances in proteomic profiling offer great promise for the discovery of markers underlying pathophysiology of diseases. In the present study, we employed two high-throughput proteomic techniques together with traditional methods to investigate cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), brain and peripheral tissues (liver, red blood cells and serum) of schizophrenia patients in an attempt to identify peripheral/surrogate disease markers. The cohorts used to investigate each tissue were largely independent, although some CSF and serum samples were collected from the same patient. To address the major confounding factor of antipsychotic drug treatment, we also included a large cohort of first-onset drug-naive patients. Apolipoprotein A1 (apoA1) showed a significant decrease in expression in schizophrenia patients compared to controls in all five tissues examined. Specifically, using SELDI-TOF mass spectrometry, apoA1 was found decreased in CSF from schizophrenia patients (-35%, P=0.00001) and, using 2D-DIGE, apoA1 was also found downregulated in liver (-30%, P=0.02) and RBCs (-60%, P=0.003). Furthermore, we found a significant reduction of apoA1 in sera of first-onset drug-naive schizophrenia patients using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (-18%, P=0.00008) and in two investigations of post-mortem brain tissue using western blot analysis (-35%, P=0.05; -51%, P=0.05). These results show that apoA1 is consistently downregulated in the central nervous system as well as peripheral tissues of schizophrenia patients and may be linked to the underlying disease mechanism.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To evaluate the diagnostic ability of scanning laser polarimetry (GDx variable corneal compensator [VCC]) for early glaucoma in Asian Indian eyes. DESIGN: Cross-sectional observational study. PARTICIPANTS: Two groups of patients (early glaucoma and normal) who satisfied the inclusion and exclusion criteria were included. Early glaucoma was diagnosed in presence of open angles, characteristic glaucomatous optic disc changes correlating with the visual field (VF) on automated perimetry (VF defect fulfilling at least 2 of 3 Anderson and Patella's criteria with mean deviation >or= -6 decibels). Normal subjects had visual acuity >or= 20/30 and intraocular pressure < 22 mmHg, with a normal optic disc and fields and no ocular abnormality. METHODS: All patients underwent complete ophthalmic evaluation, including VF examination (24-2/30-2 Swedish interactive threshold algorithm standard program) and imaging with GDx VCC. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value and negative predictive value, area under the receiving operating characteristic curve, and likelihood ratios (LRs) were calculated for various GDx VCC parameters. RESULTS: Seventy-four eyes (74 patients) with early glaucoma and 104 eyes (104 normal subjects) were enrolled. TSNIT Std Dev (temporal-superior-nasal-inferior-temporal standard deviation) had the best combination of sensitivity and specificity-61.3 and 95.2, respectively-followed by nerve fiber index score > 50 (sensitivity, 52.7%; specificity, 99%). Nerve fiber index score > 50 had positive and negative predictive values of 74.3% and 97.6%, respectively, for an assumed glaucoma prevalence of 5%. Nerve fiber index score > 50 had a positive LR (+LR) of 54.8 for early glaucoma. CONCLUSIONS: GDx VCC has moderate sensitivity, with high specificity, in the diagnosis of early glaucoma. The high +LR for the nerve fiber index score can provide valuable diagnostic information for individual patients.

Early glaucoma was diagnosed in presence of open angles, characteristic glaucomatous optic disc changes correlating with the visual field on automated perimetry (visual field defect fulfilling at least 2 of Anderson and Patella's 3 criteria with mean deviation > or = -6 dB). Normals had visual acuity > or =20/30, intraocular pressure <22 mmHg with normal optic disc and fields and no ocular abnormality. METHODS: All patients underwent complete ophthalmic evaluation including visual field examination (24-2/30-2 SITA standard program) and imaging with Stratus OCT 3. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values, area under the receiving operating characteristic curve and likelihood ratios were calculated for various Stratus OCT 3 parameters. RESULTS: Seventy-two eyes (72 patients) with early glaucoma and 96 eyes (96 normal subjects) were analyzed. The inferior maximum parameter had the best combination of sensitivity and specificity, 75% (95% confidence interval [CI], 70.2-79.8%) and 89.6% (95% CI, 82.6-96.6%), respectively. The 6-o'clock parameter had a sensitivity of 61.1% (95% CI, 52.3-69.9) and specificity of 99% (95% CI, 95-100); for an assumed prevalence of 5%, the positive and negative predictive values were 75% and 98%, respectively. The positive likelihood ratio for the 6-o'clock parameter (P<5%) in early glaucoma was 61. CONCLUSIONS: Optical coherence tomography has moderate sensitivity with high specificity for the diagnosis of early glaucoma and may have a potential role in screening.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To determine the normal age-related loss of retinal nerve fiber layer thickness (RNFLT) as measured on Stratus optical coherence tomography (OCT 3; Carl Zeiss Meditec, Dublin, CA) in an Asian Indian population. DESIGN: Prospective, cross-sectional, observational study. PARTICIPANTS: One hundred eighty-seven eyes of 187 normal subjects (age range, 5-75 years) who satisfied the inclusion and exclusion criteria were included. The subjects were defined as normal if they had visual acuity of 20/30 or better, intraocular pressure less than 22 mmHg with normal optic disc, and no ocular abnormality. METHODS: All patients underwent complete ophthalmic evaluation including imaging with Stratus OCT 3. Simple linear regression was performed to study the effect of age on RNFLT, with age as the independent variable and RNFLT as the dependent variable. Spearman's correlation was studied between the age and RNFLT. An analysis of variance was applied to compare RNFLT between the different age groups. The chi-square test also was used to evaluate the relationship between age and RNFLT. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE: Effect of age on RNFLT. RESULTS: One hundred eighty-seven eyes of 187 normal subjects were analyzed. Mean age+/-standard deviation was 33.0+/-19.7 years (range, 5-75). Average RNFLT and RNFLT by quadrant demonstrated the tendency of RNFLT to decrease with increasing age, especially after age 50 years. Average RNFLT demonstrated a negative slope of 0.16 microm/year (95% confidence interval [CI], -0.1 to -0.24). By quadrant, the superior average (negative slope, -0.23 microm/year; 95% CI, -0.1 to -0.34) showed a maximum tendency to decline with age, whereas in the inferior quadrant (negative slope, -0.08 microm/year; 95% CI, 0.05 to -0.24), the age-related decay was minimal. Six clock-hour RNFLT had a least negative slope of -0.022 microm/year (95% CI, -0.08 to -0.1). Chi-square test results showed a significant inverse relationship between age and average RNFLT (P = 0.01). CONCLUSIONS: Age-related retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) loss is not uniform in all the quadrants, with maximum loss in the superior quadrant, and seems to reach a maximum after the age of 50 years. Furthermore, it seems that inferior quadrant RNFL is more resistant to loss.
