ABSTRACT

Within this project the emissions into the atmosphere of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and -furans (PCDD/F) of 30 domestic heating appliances in Austrian households were tested. The appliances were single stoves (kitchen stove, continuous burning stove and tiled stove) and central heating boilers for solid fuels up to a nominal heat input of 50 kW. A main objective of this survey was to determine the PCDD/F emissions of domestic heating units under routine conditions. Therefore, the habitual combustion conditions used by the operators were not influenced. The original fuels and lightning supports were used and the operation of the units was carried out by the householders according to their usual practice. The data obtained were used to calculate in-field PCDD/F-emission factors. Most of the appliances have shown PCDD/F emissions within a concentration range of 0.01-0.3 ng TEQ/MJ. Modern fan-assisted wood heating boilers with afterburning and units for continuously burning of wood chips and wood pellets had the lowest emissions. High emissions were caused by unsuitable heating habits such as combustion of wastes and inappropriate operation of the appliances. There were only small differences between single stoves and central heating boilers or between wood and coal-fired appliances. The emission factors calculated are higher than those cited in literature, which are mainly derived from trials on test stands under laboratory conditions.

ABSTRACT

The efficiency of percutane isosorbide dinitrate (ISDN) therapy on 61 subjects with coronary heart diseases (angina pectoris, postinfarction state and myocardial insufficiency) was examined. Serum levels of ISDN in 12 subjects were measured gaschromatographically. The haemodynamic and clinical parameters received, as well as, the reduced attack-note of stenocardic symptoms demonstrate the therapeutic and prophylactic effectiveness of this kind of therapy. Sufficient systemic availability of ISDN in organism was evident. Non of these subjects seem to develop a tolerance, because stenocardic symptoms were not obvious. No diminished sensitivity to acute acting nitrates was present. Intervals in long-term therapy with nitrates are discussed. "Isoket ointment" comes in premeasured doses and is easy to apply. Good patient compliance is obtained.

ABSTRACT

Serum levels of 8-methoxypsoralen (8-MOP) were determined 2 hours after oral administration and found to vary considerably among psoriatic patients. There was no definite correlation between the 8-MOP serum level, the dose of 8-MOP/kg body weight ingested, and the minimal phototoxic UVA dose.

ABSTRACT

The introduction of a pollen diet as an adjuvant in the reduction of side effects during radiotherapy of patients with gynaecological cancer is described and its efficacy evaluated. 15 women with carcinoma of the cervix received a pollen diet during irradiation, whilst ten further patients receiving irradiation served as controls without pollen added to the diet. Serum enzymes, proteins, vitamins and blood count were analysed before and after irradiation. It appears, that pollen favourably influences the efficacy of irradiation and reduces the frequency of side effects, both subjectively and objectively.
