ABSTRACT

The present study was undertaken to assess the ameliorative effect of dietary supplementation of astaxanthin in Sirohi goats under simulated heat stress conditions. Eighteen healthy female Sirohi goats were divided equally into three groups (n = 6): Heat-Stressed Control (HSC), Treatment 1 (T1), and Treatment 2 (T2). During the experiment, goats in the T1 group were supplemented with astaxanthin at the rate of 25 mg/animal/day, while those in the T2 group received supplementation of 50 mg/animal/day. The experiment was conducted for 42 days: 14 days of acclimatization period, next 21 days animals were exposed to 42ºC for 6 h from 09:00 h to 15:00 h and 7 days of recovery period. On a daily basis, we recorded the physiological responses of goats and collected environmental data at the experimental site. Blood samples were collected 0 and 14th days of acclimatization, on 1st, 6th, 11th, 16th and 21st day of heat exposure and on the 7th day of the recovery period. The rectal temperature and respiration rates of the treatment groups were lower than those of the HSC group during the exposure period. Heat stress in the supplemented groups was associated with reduced levels of hepatic enzymes such as AST and ALT. Serum urea, creatinine and albumin levels were significantly (P < 0.05) different between control and treatment groups. It was thus concluded that dietary inclusion of antioxidant astaxanthin can ameliorate induced thermal load as evident from changes in physio-biochemical parameters in the Sirohi goats, that was more prominent at 50 mg/ animal/day than 25 mg/ animal/day.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to monitor the mammary health of 37 multiparous Murrah buffaloes through infrared thermography (IRT). Based on the California Mastitis Test (CMT) and milk somatic cell counts (SCC), buffaloes were grouped into healthy (H, n = 16), subclinical mastitis (SCM, n = 10), and clinical mastitis (CM, n = 11). Buffaloes were milked twice daily in the morning (5:00-6:00 AM) and evening (5:00-6:00 PM). Rectal temperature and respiratory rates were recorded, CMT was performed and thermal images of the mammary gland of all the buffaloes were taken before and after each milking. Milk samples were analysed after each milking for SCC, fat, Solids-Not-Fat (SNF), density, protein, lactose, salts, conductivity, and pH immediately in the laboratory from fresh milk samples. The surface temperature of the periocular region of both the eyes, muzzle, flank, and vagina were also taken. Thermal images were used to assess the surface temperature of the udder (USST), teat apex (TAT), teat barrel (TB1T), teat base (TB2T), and teat skin surface (TSST). Eye and USST showed significantly higher temperatures (p < 0.05), whereas skin surface temperatures (SST) of different body parts were non-significant in both SCM and CM animals than buffaloes in the H group. Milk SCC showed a positive correlation with conductivity (r > 0.7), salts, and pH (r < 0.6) and a negative correlation with fat, SNF, density, protein, and lactose. TAT, TB1T, TB2T, TSST, and USST were positively correlated with milk SCC. Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) analysis of H and SCM groups showed that USST before milking had optimum sensitivity (Se = 0.80) and specificity (Sp = 0.906) among the various skin temperatures recorded. Thermal images captured during the morning showed higher sensitivity compared to images taken in the evening. Results indicate IRT can be used to monitor the mammary health of buffaloes but using IRT in conjunction with milk SCC can help in the accurate prediction of SCM in dairy buffaloes.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: In August 2023, the BA.2.86 SARS-CoV-2 variant, with over 30 spike protein mutations, emerged amidst the global dominance of XBB sub-lineages. It evolved into JN.1 by late 2023, spreading across 71 countries. JN.1, distinct for its L455S mutation, significantly dominated global sequences, raising concerns over its transmission and clinical impact. The study investigates JN.1's clinical severity and its effect on hospital admissions in Maharashtra, India. METHODOLOGY: The present study involved 3,150 curated Indian SARS-CoV-2 whole genome sequences with collection dates between 1st August 2023 and 15th January 2024. Lineage and phylogenetic analysis of sequences was performed using Nextclade. Telephonic interviews were conducted to confirm the demographic details and obtain clinical information on the JN.1* (* indicates JN.1 and all its sub-lineages) cases. The obtained data were recorded and analyzed using Microsoft® Excel (Microsoft Corporation, Redmond, WA). RESULTS: Out of 3,150 sequences analyzed, JN.1* was the most common lineage (2377/3150, 75.46%), followed by XBB.2.3* (281/3150, 8.92%) and XBB.1.16* (187/3150, 5.94%). In India, it was first identified on 6th October 2023, in Kerala. The highest proportion of JN.1* sequences originated from Maharashtra (628/2377, 26.42%), followed by West Bengal (320/2377, 13.46%), Andhra Pradesh (293/2377, 12.33%), Kerala (288/2377, 12.12%), and Karnataka (285/2377, 11.99%). In Maharashtra, the JN.1* variant was first identified on 23rd November 2023. A total of 279 JN.1* cases were included in the clinical study. Of these, 95.34% (266/279) had symptomatic disease with mild symptoms; cold (187/279, 67.03%) being the most common symptom, followed by fever (156/279, 55.91%), cough (114/279, 40.86%), and headache (28/279, 15.64%). Of all the cases, 13.26% (37/279) required institutional quarantine or hospitalization, and the rest were isolated at home. Among the hospitalized patients, 54.05% (20/37) cases were given conservative treatment while 45.95% (17/37) cases required supplemental oxygen therapy. Regarding the vaccination status, 94.26% (263/279) of cases received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, while 5.02% (14/279) were not vaccinated, of which most were children aged zero to nine years (5/14, 35.71%). The overall recovery rate among JN.1* cases was 98.57% (275/279), with 1.43% (4/279) cases succumbing to the disease. CONCLUSION: The JN.1* variant, the dominant variant in India, exhibits clinical features similar to previous circulating variants in Maharashtra without increased severity. Its notable transmissibility underscores the importance of studying the ongoing viral evolution. The pressing necessity for swift identification and the clinical features of new variants is essential for effective public health response.

ABSTRACT

The present study focused on Sahiwal cows, a prominent milch breed in tropical India, to correlate udder temperature with physiological markers of stress and inflammation during subclinical mastitis (SCM). The primary goal was to assess the potential of udder infrared thermography for the early detection of SCM under the semi-intensive production. Cows were categorized based on milk somatic cell counts (SCC), with healthy (H) cows having SCC <2 × 105 cells/mL and no history of mastitis, and cows with subclinical mastitis (SCM) and initial stages of clinical mastitis (CM) having quarter milk SCC of 2-5 × 105 and >5 × 105 cells/mL, respectively. Firstly, udder thermograms were analysed for udder skin surface temperature (USST), teat skin surface temperature (TSST), and teat apex temperature (TAT) using Fluke software to determine the optimal site for temperature measurement during intramammary infection. Secondly, milk samples were collected for automatic estimation of compositional changes, electrical conductivity, and pH. Thirdly, milk whey was separated for quantifying stress and inflammatory indicators, including cortisol, prolactin, and acute-phase proteins (APPs): milk amyloid A and milk haptoglobin using bovine-specific ELISA kits. Significant increases (p < 0.01) in USST, TSST, TAT, cortisol, and APPs were observed in SCM and CM compared to healthy cows, while prolactin levels decreased (p < 0.01). The correlation matrix revealed strong positive correlations of SCC with USST (r = 0.84, p < 0.01). In ROC analysis, USST demonstrated cut-off values of 37.74 and 39.58 °C, with accuracy (p < 0.05) of 98% for SCM and 95% for CM, surpassing both TAT and TSST. Therefore, the combination of these non-invasive methods increases the reliability and accuracy of infrared thermography for early detection of SCM, providing valuable insights for the development of a protocol for routine screening and udder health monitoring in indigenous dairy cows.

ABSTRACT

Objective: This study tested the hypothesis that healthy aging attenuates cognitive practice effects and, consequently, limits the familiarity-associated reductions in heart rate (HR) and breathing frequency (BF) responses during retesting. Methods: Twenty-one cognitively normal older and younger adults (65 ± 2 vs. 26 ± 1 years old) participated in the study. Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), Digit-Span-Test (DST), Trail Making Test (TMT-B), and California Verbal Learning Test (CVLT-II) were administered twice at 3-week intervals, while HR and BF were monitored by electrocardiography and plethysmography, respectively. Results: Cognitive performances were not affected by the age factor, and the retest factor only affected CVLT-II. HR and BF increased only in the younger adults (p < .01) during cognitive tests; retesting attenuated these responses (retest factor p < .01). Long-delay free-recall in CVLT-II was unchanged in cognitively normal older versus younger adults. Healthy aging did not diminish short-term memory assessed by DST and CVLT-II short-delay or long-delay free-recalls. Conclusions: Only CVLT-II, but not MMSE, DST or TMT-B, demonstrated cognitive retesting practice effects in the younger and older adults. Cognitive testing at 3-week intervals in cognitively normal older and younger subjects revealed divergent cardiorespiratory responses to MMSE, DST, and TMT-B cognitive testing, particularly HR, which increased only in younger adults and to a lesser extent during retesting despite the absence of practice effects.

BACKGROUND: Post-COVID-19 conditions (PCC) have emerged as a significant global health concern due to their potential impact on patients' quality of life and healthcare resources. The present study aims to understand the burden and characteristics of PCC in Maharashtra, India, and compares its prevalence among cases infected with Delta and Omicron variants. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective observational study included 617 laboratory-confirmed Delta and Omicron variant cases. These cases were telephonically followed up to document persistent COVID-19 symptoms using a questionnaire based on the Post-COVID-19 Clinical Form from the Global COVID-19 Clinical Platform of the World Health Organization (WHO), and the results were analyzed. RESULTS: Out of 617 laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 cases, 82.97% and 17.03% were Omicron and Delta cases, respectively. The mean follow-up period for Delta and Omicron cases was 78.05 and 21.56 weeks, respectively. A total of 40 (6.48%) cases reported persistent symptoms at follow-up, with a higher prevalence among those infected with the Delta variant (12.38%) compared to the Omicron variant (5.27%). The most common long COVID symptoms reported were malaise (25%), dyspnea (20%), post-exertional fatigue (17.5%), joint pain (15%), and frequent episodes of cough and cold (15%). Additionally, 1.94% of participants developed a new medical condition following COVID-19 infection, most commonly hypertension (25%), lung fibrosis (16.67%), and asthma (8.33%). Factors such as more than five acute symptoms, a moderate to severe disease, the need for hospitalization, and hospitalization for more than five days were significantly associated with PCC. CONCLUSION: Long COVID results in extended disability and illness. The varying impacts of different COVID-19 variants highlight the complex nature of post-COVID-19 complications. Our findings highlight the need for strategic planning of healthcare resources to ensure optimal response and preparedness to manage the burden of PCC.

ABSTRACT

Cotton bollworm incidence and damages are high in India. In addition, it causes considerable yield loss. A new insecticide formulation Chlorantraniliprole 600 g/L SC was used along with recommended insecticides for managing Spodoptera litura and Helicoverpa armigera in two consecutive experimental trials during the period October 2021 to September 2022. Two foliar applications of Chlorantraniliprole (40 and 30 g a. i/ha) at ten days interval period reduced significantly the larval populations of H. armigera, S. litura without any phytotoxic symptoms in cotton. Chlorantraniliprole application in open field condition was found to be harmless to natural enemy (coccinellids and spiders). Even though, a temporary lessening of natural enemy populations was noticed after spray, progressively the population was increased within a week time. Cotton yield was high in chlorantraniliprole @ 40 g a. i/ha treated plot (22.66, 22.12 q/ha) when compared to untreated control. Similar effect was also noticed in the dose at 30 g a. i/ha (22.35, 21.81 q/ha) and it was statistically on par in both experiments. Residue analysis results confirming that, cotton lint, cotton seed and soil samples collected from treated (30 and 60 g a. i/ha) and untreated samples during harvest were free from chlorantraniliprole residues (below detectable levels of 0.008 µg/g).

ABSTRACT

Background SARS-CoV-2 has evolved rapidly, resulting in the emergence of lineages with a competitive advantage over one another. Co-infections with different SARS-CoV-2 lineages can give rise to recombinant lineages. To date, the XBB lineage is the most widespread recombinant lineage worldwide, with the recently named XBB.1.16 lineage causing a surge in the number of COVID-19 cases in India. Methodology The present study involved retrieval of SARS-CoV-2 genome sequences from India (between December 1, 2022 and April 8, 2023) through GISAID; sequences were curated, followed by lineage and phylogenetic analysis. Demographic and clinical data from Maharashtra, India were collected telephonically, recorded in Microsoft® Excel, and analyzed using IBM® SPSS statistics, version 29.0.0.0 (241). Results A total of 2,944 sequences were downloaded from the GISAID database, of which 2,856 were included in the study following data curation. The sequences from India were dominated by the XBB.1.16* lineage (36.17%) followed by XBB.2.3* (12.11%) and XBB.1.5* (10.36%). Of the 2,856 cases, 693 were from Maharashtra; 386 of these were included in the clinical study. The clinical features of COVID-19 cases with XBB.1.16* infection (XBB.1.16* cases, 276 in number) showed that 92% of those had a symptomatic disease, with fever (67%), cough (42%), rhinorrhea (33.7%), body ache (14.5%) and fatigue (14.1%) being the most common symptoms. The presence of comorbidity was found in 17.7% of the XBB.1.16* cases. Among the XBB.1.16* cases, 91.7% were vaccinated with at least one dose of vaccine against COVID-19. While 74.3% of XBB.1.16* cases were home-isolated; 25.7% needed hospitalization/institutional quarantine, of these, 33.8% needed oxygen therapy. Out of 276 XBB.1.16* cases, seven (2.5%) cases succumbed to the disease. The majority of XBB.1.16* cases who died belonged to an elderly age group (60 years and above), had underlying comorbid condition/s, and needed supplemental oxygen therapy. The clinical features of COVID-19 cases infected with other co-circulating Omicron variants were similar to XBB.1.16* cases. Conclusion The study reveals that XBB.1.16* lineage has become the most predominant SARS-CoV-2 lineage in India. The study also shows that the clinical features and outcome of XBB.1.16* cases were similar to those of other co-circulating Omicron lineage infected cases in Maharashtra, India.

Background SARS-CoV-2 has evolved to produce new variants causing successive waves of infection. Currently, six variants are being monitored by the World Health Organization that are replacing BA.5. These include BF.7 (BA.5 + R346T in spike), BQ.1 (and BQ.1.1, with BA.5 + R346T, K444T, N460K mutations in spike), BA.2.75 (including BA.2.75.2 and CH.1.1), and XBB (including XBB.1.5). BQ.1 and XBB variants are more immune evasive and have spread quickly throughout the world. Concerning the potential severity of infections caused by these variants, the present study describes the clinical characteristics and outcomes of these major variants in Maharashtra. Methodology A total of 1,141 reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR)-positive SARS-CoV-2 samples, with a cycle threshold (Ct) value of less than 25, were processed for SARS-CoV-2 whole genome sequencing between July 10, 2022, and January 12, 2023. All corresponding demographic and clinical data were recorded and analyzed using Microsoft® Excel and Epi Info™. Results Out of the 1,141 samples sequenced, BA.2.75* (63.78%) was the predominant Omicron variant, followed by the XBB* (18.88%), BA.2.38* (4.94%), BA.5* (4.06%), BA.2.10* (3.51%), and BQ.1* (1.65%). A total of 540 cases were contacted telephonically, of whom 494 (91.48%) were symptomatic with mild symptoms. Fever (77.73%) was the most common symptom, followed by cold (47.98%), cough (42.31%), and myalgia and fatigue (18.83%). Of the 540 cases, 414 (76.67%) cases recovered at home, and 126 (23.33%) were institutionally quarantined/hospitalized. Among the home-isolated and hospitalized cases, 416 (99.76%) and 108 (87.80%), respectively, recovered with symptomatic treatment, while one (0.24%) and 15 (12.20%), respectively, succumbed to the disease. Out of the 540 cases, 491 (90.93%) were vaccinated with at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, 41 (7.59%) were unvaccinated, and for eight (1.48%) cases, vaccination data was not available. Conclusions The current study indicates that the XBB* variant is causing mild disease in India. However, as XBB* possesses both immune-escape and infectivity-enhancing mutations, it has the potential to spread to other parts of the world rapidly. Further, anti-SARS-CoV-2 vaccination improves survival rates in COVID-19.

Background: The versatile combination of emdogain or enamel matrix derivative (EMD), recombinant human platelet-derived growth factor-BB (rhPDGF-BB), and demineralized freeze-dried bone allograft (DFDBA) has not been utilized in the treatment of intrabony defects yet. Aim: The present study attempted to investigate the efficacy of a combination of simple, uncomplicated nature of modified minimally invasive surgical technique (M-MIST) with EMD, rhPDGF-BB, and DFDBA in the surgical management of intrabony defects and to assess the possible favorable effects for a period of 6 months. Patients and Methods: Thirty healthy subjects were included in the present double-blind, randomized controlled, two-arm parallel study. The test group was treated with M-MIST by using rhPDGF-BB, EMD, and DFDBA, and the control group was treated with M-MIST by using rhPDGF-BB and EMD. Results: Differences between the mean values of primary clinical parameters including relative attachment level, probing depth, and gingival recession at baseline and those at 6 months after surgery were statistically significant in both groups. Inter-group comparison for clinical attachment level gain, probing depth reduction, and change in the position of gingival margin revealed no statistically significant differences. Inter-group comparison revealed significant differences in linear bone growth (LBG) and percentage bone fill (% BF) but no significant differences in the residual defect depth and change in the alveolar crest position. Conclusion: The additional use of DFDBA provides superior benefits in terms of LBG and % BF in intrabony defects. This improvement might be attributed to the use of an osteoinductive scaffold.

ABSTRACT

Leukocyte adhesion deficiency (LAD) is an immunodeficiency caused by defects in the adhesion of leukocytes (especially neutrophils) to the blood vessel wall. As a result, patients with LAD suffer from severe bacterial infections and impaired wound healing, accompanied by neutrophilia. In LAD-I, characterized directly after birth by delayed separation of the umbilical cord, mutations are found in ITGB2, the gene that encodes the ß subunit (CD18) of the ß2 integrins. In the rare LAD-II disease, the fucosylation of selectin ligands is disturbed, caused by mutations in SLC35C1, the gene that encodes a GDP-fucose transporter of the Golgi system. LAD-II patients lack the H and Lewis Lea and Leb blood group antigens. Finally, in LAD-III, the conformational activation of the hematopoietically expressed ß integrins is disturbed, leading to leukocyte and platelet dysfunction. This last syndrome is caused by mutations in FERMT3, encoding the kindlin-3 protein in all blood cells, involved in the regulation of ß integrin conformation. This article contains an update of the mutations that we consider to be relevant for the various forms of LAD.

BACKGROUND: Despite the persistent public health problem of positive psychotic symptoms, understanding of symptom specific prevalence rates, clinical correlates and service utilisation are sparse. AIMS: The current study aimed to establish prevalence, clinical and service utilisation correlates of hallucinations and delusions in people accessing outpatient clinics in Tamil Nadu, India. METHODS: Secondary patient data from outpatient clinics, over a 12-month period, in 2016, was used for analysis (N = 917). Based on the presence of positive psychotic symptoms (PPSx), the sample was divided into four groups for analysis- hallucinations-only (H), delusions-only (D), both hallucinations and delusions (HD) and neither PPSx (N-PPSx). RESULTS: Findings indicate that the most prevalent PPSx were hallucinations (10.7%) however, barriers to service utilisation and clinical correlates were associated predominantly with the D and the HD group; as was severe work impairment. Yet, this group was most likely to remain with psychiatric services. Lastly, diagnostic challenges were apparent within the sample. CONCLUSIONS: The study revealed that despite more barriers to service utilisation, persons with PPSx remain in contact with services. Yet prognosis remains only moderate at best, indicating other mediating and underlying factors impeding recovery may be interplaying and, therefore, a need for enhanced biopsychosocial approaches.

INTRODUCTION: The association between fluoroquinolone use and the risk of aortic aneurysm as well as the risk of aortic dissections remains uncertain, primarily due to conflicting findings from observational studies. We sought to conduct a double-systematic review and meta-analysis of all observational studies to assess the existence and extent of both these associations. The aim of our study is to assess the role of Fluoroquinolone on aortic aneurysm and aortic dissection in comparison to other antibiotics. EVIDENCE ACQUISITION: MEDLINE and Cochrane CENTRAL were systematically searched up till June 2021 for observational studies studying the correlation between fluoroquinolone usage and aortic aneurysms and dissections. Random-effects pooling was used to calculate adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CI). To assess publication bias, propensity score matching was conducted, and heterogeneity was evaluated by using I2 statistics. EVIDENCE SYNTHESIS: Of 688 potentially relevant articles, 635 titles were screened. Ten studies were included in the systematic review, and 4 observational studies with 53,651,283 participants were eligible to be included in the meta-analysis. Pooled estimates showed that fluoroquinolone use was associated with a higher risk of aortic aneurysm when compared to other Antibiotics (HR 1.84, 95% CI 1.10-2.48; P<0.00001). However, fluoroquinolones had no significant effect on the risk of developing aortic dissection (HR 1.09, 95% CI 0.96-1.25; P=0.19). CONCLUSIONS: The present analysis suggests that fluoroquinolone usage is more strongly linked to aortic aneurysm than other antibiotics. However, there was no statistically significant link between fluoroquinolone and aortic dissection. As a result, clinicians should exercise caution when administering fluoroquinolone to patients who have a history of or are at risk of aortic disease.

ABSTRACT

The disease burden and healthcare costs of psychiatric diseases along with the pursuit to understand their underlying biochemical mechanisms have led to psychiatric biomarker investigations. Current advances in evaluating candidate biomarkers for psychiatric diseases, such as major depressive disorder (MDD), focus on determining a specific biomarker signature or profile. The origins of candidate biomarkers are heterogenous, ranging from genomics, proteomics, and metabolomics, while incorporating associations with clinical characterization. Prior to clinical use, candidate biomarkers must be validated by large multi-site clinical studies, which can be used to determine the ideal MDD biomarker signature. Therefore, identifying valid biomarkers has been challenging, suggesting the need for alternative approaches. Following validation studies, new technology must be employed to transition from biomarker discovery to diagnostic biomolecular profiling. Current technologies used in discovery and validation, such as mass spectroscopy, are currently limited to clinical research due to the cost or complexity of equipment, sample preparation, or measurement analysis. Thus, other technologies such as electrochemical detection must be considered for point-of-care (POC) testing with the needed characteristics for physicians' offices. This review evaluates the advantages of using electrochemical sensing as a primary diagnostic platform due to its rapidity, accuracy, low cost, biomolecular detection diversity, multiplexed capacity, and instrument flexibility. We evaluate the capabilities of electrochemical methods in evaluating current candidate MDD biomarkers, individually and through multiplexed sensing, for promising applications in detecting MDD biosignatures in the POC setting.

ABSTRACT

Myopia has reached epidemic levels in recent years. Stopping the development and progression of myopia is critical, as high myopia is a major cause of blindness worldwide. This overview aims at finding the association of time spent outdoors (TSO), near work (NW), and physical activity (PA) with the incidence, prevalence, and progression of myopia in children. Literature search was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, ProQuest, and Web of Science databases. Systematic reviews (SR) and meta-analyses (MA) on the TSO, NW, and PA in relation to myopia were reviewed. Methodological nature of qualified studies were evaluated utilizing the Risk of Bias in Systematic Review tool. We identified four SRs out of which three had MA, which included 62 unique studies, involving >1,00,000 children. This overview found a protective trend toward TSO with a pooled odds ratio (OR) of 0.982 (95% confidence interval (CI) 0.979-0.985, I2 = 93.5%, P < 0.001) per extra hour of TSO every week. A pooled OR 1.14 (95% CI 1.08-1.20) suggested NW to be related to risk of myopia. However, studies associating myopia with NW activities are not necessarily a causality as the effect of myopia might force children to indoor confinement with more NW and less TSO. PA presented no effect on myopia. Though the strength of evidence is less because of high heterogeneity and lack of clinical trials with clear definition, increased TSO and reduced NW are protective against myopia development among nonmyopes.

ABSTRACT

The aging effects of Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) microplastics were studied under Fenton process and Seawater. This research work mainly focuses on the aging mechanism of PET microplastics under two different conditions and their effect of aging on the adsorption of organic contaminants. The results of optical microscopic images, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman Spectroscopy, carbonyl, carboxyl index, X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) help to understand the aging mechanism of PET microplastics. Parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) and two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy (2D-COS) were performed using 3D Excitation-Emission Matrix (3D-EEM) to understand the possible dissolved organic matter released during the Fenton process and seawater. The release of protein/phenol like components was observed in seawater whereas humic acid-like component was noted in the Fenton process. Later, the aged PET microplastics were tested for their adsorption capacity towards 4-nitrophenol at three different temperatures (15, 30 and 45 °C). The adsorption capacity of aged microplastics was found to be higher than the normal PET microplastics for all three different temperatures. Hydrogen bonding, n-pi interaction performed a significant role than pi-pi and hydrophobic interaction in the adsorption mechanism. A double layer with double energy model was found to be the best fit in the adsorption processes. The calculated adsorption energies (ΔE1, ΔE2) from the statistical physics modeling also confirms the physisorption mechanism. The above experimental results help to understand the behavior of microplastics at different aging period and how it acts as a carrier for pollutant in the marine environment.

ABSTRACT

ConspectusIon-containing solid block polymer (BP) electrolytes can self-assemble into microphase-separated domains to facilitate the independent optimization of ion conduction and mechanical stability; this assembly behavior has the potential to improve the functionality and safety of lithium-ion batteries over liquid electrolytes to meet future demands (e.g., large capacities and long lifetimes) in various applications. However, significant enhancements in the ionic conductivity and processability of BPs must be realized for BP-based electrolytes to become robust alternatives in commercial devices. Toward this end, the controlled modification of BP electrolytes' intra-domain (nanometer-scale) and multi-grain (micrometer-scale) structure is one viable approach; intra-domain ion transport and segmental compatibility (related to the effective Flory-Huggins parameter, χeff) can be increased by tuning the ion and monomer-segment distributions, and the morphology can be selected such that the multi-grain transport is less sensitive to grain size and orientation.To highlight the characteristics of intra-domain structure that promote efficient ion transport, this Account begins by describing the relationship between BP thermodynamics (namely, χeff and the statistical segment length, b, which is indicative of chain stiffness) and local ion concentration. These thermodynamic insights are vital because they inform the selection of synthesis and formulation variables, such as polymer and ion chemistry, polymer molecular weight and composition, and ion concentration, which boost electrolyte performance. In addition to its relationship with local ion transport, χeff is also an important factor with respect to electrolyte processability. For example, a reduced χeff can allow BP electrolytes to be processed at lower temperatures (i.e., lower energy input), with less solvent (i.e., reduced waste), and/or for shorter times (i.e., higher throughput) yet still form desired nanostructures. This Account also examines the impact of electrolyte preparation and processing on the ion transport across nanostructured grains because of grain size and orientation. As morphologies with a 3D-connected versus 2D-connected conducting phase show different sensitivities to conductivity losses that can occur because of the fabrication methods, it is necessary to account for electrolyte processing effects when probing ion transport.The intra-domain and micrometer-scale structure also can be tuned using either tapered BPs (macromolecules with modified monomer-segment composition profiles between two homogeneous blocks) or blends of BPs and homopolymers, independent of the BP molecular weight and composition, as detailed herein. The application of TBPs or BP/HP blends as ion-conducting materials leads to improved ion transport, reduced χeff, and greater availability of morphologies with 3D connectivity relative to traditional (non-tapered and unblended) BP electrolytes. This feature results from the fact that ion transport is related more closely to the monomer-segment distributions within a domain than the overall nanoscale morphology or average polymer/ion mobilities. Taken together, this Account describes how ion transport and processability are influenced by BP architecture and nanostructural features, and it provides avenues to tune nanoassemblies that can contribute to improved lithium-ion battery technologies to meet future demands.

ABSTRACT

The advent of continuous positive airway pressure ventilation as a mode of treatment for respiratory distress syndrome for premature infants has increased the risk of nasal injuries such as pressure necrosis. We describe a case of a 24-week infant who received CPAP ventilation as a mode of ventilatory support for respiratory distress syndrome and the complication of pressure necrosis of the columella. There are many factors that predispose an infant receiving CPAP ventilation to nasal injury. Many strategies can be employed to reduce the incidence of nasal injuries such as the use of nasal barrier dressings, the use of nasal high flow oxygen (nHF) cannula instead of CPAP ventilation, and the use of nasal masks instead of nasal prongs for CPAP ventilation delivery. The treatment of pressure necrosis can be either medical or surgical. The use of ointments or growth sprays can be used in cases of skin breakdown. Surgical reconstruction can be offered in cases of nasal deformity.
