Clinico-roentgeno-morphological investigation established a marked regression of tumor in as many as 86.1% out of 230 patients with stage IIB and III breast cancer who had undergone radiothermotherapy. Morphologically confirmed complete regression was observed in 12.6% of patients with lesions smaller than 3 cm in diameter at presentation. Treatment was followed by massive necrosis, dystrophic changes and inhibition of mitotic activity of tumor cells in patients with stage III cancer and those with stage IIB who had presented with tumors larger than 3 cm in diameter. However, in all these cases viable tumor cells were still observed at the periphery of tumor.

Experiments were conducted to study the time course of changes of some immunological indices in animals after a combined use of local hyperthermia and course use of prospidin. Local microwave hyperthermia used at the beginning of a course of prospidin caused a decrease in some indices of immunity which was much lower than in case of the use of only prospidin or hyperthermia.

The potentialities of microwave radiometry application have been considered as an adjuvant to invasive thermometry to control temperature during local MWF-hyperthermia. An increasing role of radiometric monitoring in intracavitary hyperthermia has been shown in experiments on heating rectal tumors. Technical aspects of radiometric temperature measurements combined with MWF-hyperthermia are discussed.

Combined application of function-saving surgical procedure and intratumoral radiotherapy in cases of early breast cancer is of value since it is followed by stable remission in the majority of patients and produces a good cosmetic and, therefore, psychologic, effect. Function-saving surgery followed by irradiation to prevent local dissemination should be performed for early breast cancer at specialized oncological establishments. Patients should be followed-up closely.
