ABSTRACT
Se realizó una revisión bibliográfica, con el objetivo de recopilar información actualizada acerca de la influencia de la familia en los cuidados paliativos del enfermo con cáncer avanzado. Se emplearon los servicios disponibles en la red Infomed. Se consultaron las bases de datos: Medline, PubMed, MedicLatina y Scielo, además de otros recursos en línea. Los cuidados paliativos en el hogar tienen ventajas para el enfermo con cáncer avanzado, para la familia y para el sistema de salud. Para el enfermo, las ventajas se expresan en el hecho de que no están sometidos a horarios ni régimen institucional y a que conservan su intimidad en un medio conocido. La familia planifica y organiza mejor los cuidados, favorece una participación activa y directa en la atención al paciente y tiene menos gastos. Los cuidados paliativos en el hogar le ofrecen ventajas al sistema de salud, ya que con la aplicación de este tipo de modalidad existe una mejor utilización de los recursos y cobertura asistencial, proporciona ahorro y una mejoría en la percepción de la asistencia médica por parte de los enfermos y sus familiares (AU)
A literature revision was carried out with the objective to collect updated information about the influence of the family in palliative care of patients suffering from advanced stage cancer. The resources available in Infomed network were used; also the databases Medline, PubMed, MedicLatina, Scielo and other online resources were consulted. Palliative care at home has advantages for the patient with advanced cancer, the family and the health system. For the patient, the advantages are: they are not subjected to schedules or institutional regulations and they preserve their privacy in a known environment. The family plans and better organizes the care of the chronically ill, it favors an active and direct participation in the patient care, and it is less expensive. Palliative care at home offers advantages to the health system, since the implementation of this type of modality facilitates a better use of resources and health care coverage, provides thrift and improves the perception of the medical care on the part of the patients and relatives (AU)
