ABSTRACT

We study nonlinear spectral broadening and supercontinuum generation mechanisms in two-dimensional solid-core photonic bandgap fibers. Using rigorous frequency-domain numerical simulations, we determine how the spectral characteristics are influenced by the strong frequency dependence of the effective area, dispersion, and confinement losses. We also investigate soliton stabilization and the conditions under which efficient nonlinear spectral energy transfer is possible across high attenuation between adjacent bandgaps. Our results provide insight into recent experiments.

ABSTRACT

We investigate higher order core-modes of solid-core photonic bandgap fibers experimentally and theoretically. We observe that for some wavelengths ranges the second mode is guided while the fundamental mode is not. We interpret this behavior in terms of the band diagrams and full numerical simulations, in good agreements with experiments. The sole guidance of the second, ring shaped modes observed at the edges of bandgaps could be of use for generation of vortex beams.

ABSTRACT

Fiber Bragg Gratings with reflectivity up to 25 dB have been photo-written in the core of a 2D all-solid Photonic Bandgap Fiber without modification of the guiding properties of the fiber. This result is obtained by combining an appropriate glass composition for the high index inclusions constituting the micro-structured cladding and a photosensitive low index core. Couplings of the fundamental core guided mode with cladding modes are investigated and compared to theoretical predictions.
