ABSTRACT

(1) Background: Evaluate the osteoconduction capability of a biphasic calcium phosphate (BCP) ceramic composed of hydroxyapatite and ß-tricalcium phosphate 60%/40% in a rat model. (2) Methods: In the calvarial bone of 54 adult male rats, 7-mm diameter critical size defects were performed. The animals were randomly allocated to three experimental groups according to the type of material: blood clot (BCG), blood clot covered with a bovine-derived collagen membrane (MBCG), and BCP ceramic covered with a bovine-derived collagen membrane (BCPG). In each group, 6 animals were euthanatized at post-operative days 7, 30, and 60 for histological and histometric analysis. (3) Results: The qualitative analysis revealed the persistence of the collagen membrane at seven days, with no relevant newly bone formation in all groups. At 30 days, centripetal bone formation was observed residual particles of the biomaterial surrounded by fibroblasts noted in the BCPG. At 60 days, while BCG and MBCG showed a partial maturation with the central part of the defect populated by a fibrous connective tissue, in the BCPG the critical area was entirely occupied by newly formed bone. In the intra groups analysis was noted a significant increase in new bone formation during the experimental period (p < 0.05). At 60 days, BCPG showed a higher percentage area of new bone formation (p < 0.05). (4) Conclusion: BCP promoted a new bone formation by osteoconduction and might be considered a valid alternative in bone regeneration procedures.

ABSTRACT

Myiasis has been defined as a pathologic condition where dipterous larvae are lodged in mammalian hosts causing an infestation, which feeds on living or dead tissue for at least a certain period inside the host and develops itself as parasites. In humans, the most commonly affected sites are the nose, eyes, skin wounds, sinuses, lungs, ears, gut, gall bladder, vagina, nasal cavities, and rarely the mouth because the oral tissues are rarely exposed to the external environment. The etiology of oral myiasis is usually related to local factors such as poor oral hygiene, periodontal disease and labial incompetence, and systemic factors such as neurologic deficits.

ABSTRACT

Objectives: To evaluate the influence of teriparatide, systemically administered, on the morphological and structural characteristics of the reparative bone formed during the alveolar repair process in rats with induced osteoporosis (orchiectomized). Materials and Methods: Forty-eight rats were divided into three groups: 16 orchiectomized rats treated with teriparatide, 16 unqualified orchiectomized rats and 16 sham rats. Thus, 8 rats were divided for histological analysis and for Immunohistochemical analysis, which was done by the expression of TRAP proteins, osteocalcin, and WNT, with euthanasia at 42 days (decalcified tissues), and 8 rats for analysis for microtomographic analysis (calcified tissues). In this analysis, the euthanasia period was at 60 days after the extraction surgery. The quantitative data were submitted to the normality test and this indicated the most adequate statistical test (parametric vs nonparametric). The significance level of 5% was adopted for all tests. Results: Histological analysis showed better patterns of bone neoformation for the ORQTRAT group with greater amount of mineralized tissue and little connective tissue. The immunohistochemical results again showed a better repair pattern in the ORQTRAT group with more intense markings of wnt and osteocalcin and weaker trap markings. To the results of the microtomography again the ORQTRAT group showed better than the others, with higher bone volume (BV), percentage of trabecular bone (BV / TV), thickness of trabecular bone (Tb.Th) and separation between trabeculae (Tb.Sp). And, lower number (Tb.N) and lower total bone porosity (Po.Tot) when compared to the non-treated group. Conclusions: It was possible to conclude that the treatment with Teriparatide improved important parameters that determine the quality of reparative bone tissue even in the presence of the established systemic condition in the animals(AU)

ABSTRACT

Patients with cleft palate and cleft lip have severe functional and aesthetic problems, if this deformity is not treated properly and in time, can also cause psychological and aesthetic problems to the patients. This study reports a case of a 22-year-old patient with incomplete bilateral cleft lip, addressing aspects related to the diagnosis, treatment planning, surgical technique, and postoperative follow-up of the patient. Surgical treatment of cleft lip and cleft palate consists of suturing the lip and the palate, and aims not only the aesthetic restoration, but also the recovery of the phonation, mastication and respiration, as well as a normal psychosocial development.
