ABSTRACT

Soil salinization is a global constraint that significantly hampers agricultural production, with cotton being an important cash crop that is not immune to its detrimental effects. The rhizosphere microbiome plays a critical role in plant health and growth, which assists plants in resisting adverse abiotic stresses including soil salinization. This study explores the impact of soil salinization on cotton, including its effects on growth, yield, soil physical and chemical properties, as well as soil bacterial community structures. The results of ß-diversity analysis showed that there were significant differences in bacterial communities in saline-alkali soil at different growth stages of cotton. Besides, the more severity of soil salinization, the more abundance of Proteobacteria, Bacteroidota enriched in rhizosphere bacterial composition where the abundance of Acidobacteriota exhibited the opposite trend. And the co-occurrence network analysis showed that soil salinization affected the complexity of soil bacterial co-occurrence network. These findings provide valuable insights into the mechanisms by which soil salinization affects soil microorganisms in cotton rhizosphere soil and offer guidance for improving soil salinization using beneficial microorganisms.

ABSTRACT

The emergence and increasing prevalence of antibiotic resistance pose a global public risk for human health, and nonantimicrobial pharmaceuticals play an important role in this process. Herein, five nonantimicrobial pharmaceuticals, including acetaminophen (ACT), clofibric acid (CA), carbamazepine (CBZ), caffeine (CF) and nicotine (NCT), tetracycline-resistant strains, five ARGs (sul1, sul2, tetG, tetM and tetW) and one integrase gene (intI1), were detected in 101 wastewater samples during two typical sewage treatment processes including anaerobic-oxic (A/O) and biological aerated filter (BAF) in Harbin, China. The impact of nonantibiotic pharmaceuticals at environmentally relevant concentrations on both the resistance genotypes and resistance phenotypes were explored. The results showed that a significant impact of nonantibiotic pharmaceuticals at environmentally relevant concentrations on tetracycline resistance genes encoding ribosomal protection proteins (RPPs) was found, while no changes in antibiotic phenotypes, such as minimal inhibitory concentrations (MICs), were observed. Machine learning was applied to further sort out the contribution of nonantibiotic pharmaceuticals at environmentally relevant concentrations to different ARG subtypes. The highest contribution and correlation were found at concentrations of 1400-1800 ng/L for NCT, 900-1500 ng/L for ACT and 7000-10,000 ng/L for CF for tetracycline resistance genes encoding RPPs, while no significant correlation was found between the target compounds and ARGs when their concentrations were lower than 500 ng/L for NCT, 100 ng/L for ACT and 1000 ng/L for CF, which were higher than the concentrations detected in effluent samples. Therefore, the removal of nonantibiotic pharmaceuticals in WWTPs can reduce their selection pressure for resistance genes in wastewater.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To report the prevalence data for total corneal astigmatism (TCA) in cataract patients. METHODS: The authors retrospectively collected and analyzed the preoperative biometric data of the patients who underwent cataract surgery in the Department of Ophthalmology, Peking University Third Hospital, from January 2019 to May 2023. RESULTS: The mean age of the 10817 patients was 71 ± 10 years; the male/female ratio was 4653/6164. The mean TCA obtained by the IOLMaster 700 (Carl Zeiss Meditec AG, Jena, Germany), the Abulafia-Koch (AK) formula, and the Barrett toric calculator was 1.11 ± 0.81 diopter (D), 1.13 ± 0.75 D, and 1.12 ± 0.74 D respectively, which was significantly greater than the mean standard keratometric (K) astigmatism (0.99 ± 0.75 D) obtained by IOLMaster 700. Against-the-rule (ATR) astigmatism was dominant in all the TCA measurements, and its proportion increased with age. TCA measurements by different methods exhibit high variability, with a total of 1574 (8.9%) data sets from 1016 (9.4%) patients showing a difference larger than 0.5 D in at least one pair of TCA measurements. CONCLUSION: The use of TCA rather than K astigmatism significantly influenced the choice of intraocular lenses (IOLs) as more patients would be candidates for toric IOLs. It was essential to carefully compare and select TCA obtained with multiple methods for optimal postoperative visual quality.

ABSTRACT

Placental ischemia, resulting from inadequate remodeling of uterine spiral arteries, is a factor in the development of preeclampsia. However, the effect of endothelial progenitor cells that play a role in the vascular injury-repair program is largely unexplored during remodeling. Here, we observe that preeclampsia-afflicted uterine spiral arteries transition to a synthetic phenotype in vascular smooth muscle cells and characterize the regulatory axis in endothelial progenitor cells during remodeling in human decidua basalis. Excessive sEng, secreted by AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK)-deficient endothelial progenitor cells through the inhibition of HO-1, damages residual endothelium and leads to the accumulation of extracellular matrix produced by vascular smooth muscle cells during remodeling, which is further confirmed by animal models. Collectively, our findings suggest that the impaired functionality of endothelial progenitor cells contributes to the narrowing of remodeled uterine spiral arteries, leading to reduced utero-placental perfusion. This mechanism holds promise in elucidating the pathogenesis of preeclampsia.

BACKGROUND: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a common complication of pregnancy, with significant short-term and long-term implications for both mothers and their offspring. Previous studies have indicated the potential benefits of vitamin D in reducing the risk of GDM, yet little is known about this association in twin pregnancies. This study aimed to investigate maternal vitamin D status in the second trimester and examine its association with the risk of GDM in twin pregnancies. METHODS: We conducted a prospective cohort study based on data from the Chongqing Longitudinal Twin Study (LoTiS). Peripheral blood serum was collected from the mothers in the second trimester to measure 25(OH)D concentrations. GDM was diagnosed at 23-26 weeks of gestation using a 75-g 2-h oral glucose tolerance test. We used multivariable logistic regression analyses to examine the correlations between vitamin D status and the risk of GDM. RESULTS: Of the total participants, 93 (29.9%) women were diagnosed with GDM. The mean serum 25(OH)D concentration in the second trimester was 31.1 ± 11.2 ng/mL, and the rate of vitamin D insufficiency and deficiency were 23.5% and 18.7%, respectively. Compared to women with a 25(OH)D concentration < 30 ng/mL, those with a 25(OH)D concentration ≥ 30 ng/mL had a significantly lower risk of GDM (RR 0.61; 95% CI: 0.43, 0.86), especially those who were overweight before pregnancy (RR 0.32; 95% CI: 0.16, 0.64). The restricted cubic splines model showed an inverted J-shaped relationship between vitamin D concentrations and GDM risk. CONCLUSIONS: The risk of GDM was significantly reduced in twin pregnant women with vitamin D concentrations ≥ 30 ng/mL in the second trimester. TRIAL REGISTRATION: ChiCTR-OOC-16,008,203. ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Nursing research ability is an important force in improving the quality of nursing care and driving the development of the discipline. As the main force and reserve force of nursing research, master's degree nursing students should have certain research ability. The contributing factors and their relationships that challenge research ability among master's degree nursing students must be fully understood, as this level of knowledge can support the development of strategies and interventions that improve the research ability of master's degree nursing students. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to examine the relationships among positive psychological capital, research motivation, and research ability by master's degree nursing students. In addition, we investigated whether research motivation mediates the relationship between positive psychological capital and research ability. DESIGN: A descriptive cross-sectional study using an online questionnaire. SETTING: The study sampled master's degree nursing students from colleges in Sichuan, Fujian, Hubei, and Tianjin Province, China. PARTICIPANTS: From February 2022 to April 2022, 377 master's degree nursing students were chosen by a convenience sample method. METHODS: Data were gathered using a general information questionnaire, the Positive Psychological Capital Questionnaire (PPCQ), the Research Motivation Scale (RMS), and the Nursing Research Ability of Self-Evaluation Questionnaire (NRASQ). Both SPSS 26.0 and Amos 28.0. were used to handle and analyze the data. Descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation analysis, and structural equation modeling were all used in the data analysis process. The reporting followed the STROBE checklist. RESULTS: Positive psychological capital was found to be positively correlated with research ability (P < 0.01). Research motivation was also positively correlated with research ability (P < 0.01), and had a mediating effect on the relationship between positive psychological capital and research ability (P < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS: The positive psychological capital and research motivation of master's degree nursing students are positively correlated with research ability. Research motivation significantly mediates the relationship between positive psychological capital and research ability. The findings of this study can inform educational strategies and interventions for the development of research ability of master's degree nursing students.

ABSTRACT

The ocular surface microenvironment, containing the cornea, conjunctiva, and lacrimal gland, constitutes the mucosal frontline of the eye and houses a myriad of immune cells. As a part of unconventional T cells, gamma delta (γδ) T cells differ in the development and functions from canonical alpha beta (αß) T cells. They are predominantly situated in mucosal sites throughout the body, including ocular surface tissues. Recent research has elucidated that γδ T cells serve as the primary interleukin-17A (IL-17A) source in the conjunctiva. They play a pivotal role in preserving ocular surface homeostasis and exhibit both protective and pathogenic roles in ocular surface diseases. This review delves into the general profiles of γδ T cells, their distribution in ocular surface tissues, and consolidates current insights into their functions in different conditions including dry eye disease, infectious keratitis, corneal wound healing, anterior chamber-associated immune deviation, allergic conjunctival disease, and diabetic ocular surface disease. The aim is to provide a systemic perspective on γδ T cells in the ocular surface microenvironment and outline potential directions for future studies.

ABSTRACT

Exogenous photoacoustic contrast agents such as gold nanoparticles are widely utilized in photoacoustic imaging. Enhancing the photoacoustic performance of gold nanoparticles is pivotal for improving the quality and expanding the application scope of photoacoustic imaging. In this work, the photothermal and photoacoustic responses of gold nanospheres surrounded by water excited with a pulsed laser are obtained via a two-temperature model. The interplay between pulse duration and interface thermal resistance and its effect on the photothermal and photoacoustic performances are uncovered quantitatively. The results reveal that, as the pulse duration decreases, increasing the interfacial thermal conductivity can substantially enhance heat transfer between the gold nanosphere and the surrounding water. However, this approach does not effectively enhance the photoacoustic performance. Interestingly, when increasing the thermal conductivity, it was found that there is an optimal pulse duration within the range of 10 ps-10 ns. Employing an incident pulse laser with this optimal pulse duration can maximize the enhancement of the photoacoustic signal.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the latent class of psychological resilience in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and examine the factors influencing various latent types. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey design was used in this study. A total of 480 patients with RA were enrolled from two tertiary care institutions in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, between May and November 2023, using the convenience sample approach. The General Information Questionnaire, CD-RISC-10, SSRS, ASES-8, and BRAF-MDQ were used to analyze the latent classes of psychological resilience in the respondents, and the factors influencing the latent classes were explored using one-way analysis of variance, analysis of variance, and multi-categorical logistic regression analysis. RESULTS: Overall, 423 valid questionnaires were returned, indicating an 88.13% effective return rate. A latent class analysis revealed that RA patients were divided into three classes of psychological resilience: low-level (20.3%), moderate-level (31.0%), and high-level (48.7%) psychological resilience. A multi-categorical logistic regression analysis found that social support, self-efficacy, weariness, age, work status, and somatic pain all significantly influenced psychological resilience in RA patients. CONCLUSION: Three classes of RA patients' psychological resilience were identified by this study, and these classes were strongly correlated with individual treatment components. It is crucial to take into account the psychological resiliency of female RA patients who do not have a job. In order to improve psychological resilience, healthcare staff should first increase their comprehension of treat-to-target. Furthermore, people with RA may become more psychologically resilient if they receive more social support. Key Points • Preliminary research found that psychological resilience in RA patients was associated with three latent classes. • In RA patients, psychological resilience was significantly influenced by self-efficacy, fatigue, age, work status, physical pain, and social support. • The fundamental goal of bolstering RA patients' psychological resilience is to reaffirm their place in the treatment process, for example, by improving patient compliance and achieving treat-to-target earlier.

Accurate genetic diagnosis is necessary for guiding the treatment of spinal muscular atrophy (SMA). An updated consensus for the diagnosis and management of SMA was published in 2018. However, clinicians should remain alert to some pitfalls of genetic testing that can occur when following a routine diagnosis. In this study, we report the diagnosis of three unrelated individuals who were initially misdiagnosed as carrying a homozygous deletion of SMN1 exon 7. MLPA (P060 and P021) and qPCR were used to detect the copy number of SMN. SMN1 variants were identified by SMN1 clone and next-generation sequencing (NGS). Transcription of SMN1 variants was detected using qRT-PCR and ex vivo splicing analysis. Among the three individuals, one was identified as a patient with SMA carrying a heterozygous deletion and a pathogenic variant (c.835-17_835-14delCTTT) of SMN1, one was a healthy carrier only carrying a heterozygous deletion of SMN1 exon 7, and the third was a patient with nemaline myopathy 2 carrying a heterozygous deletion of SMN1 exon 7. The misdiagnosis of these individuals was attributed to the presence of the c.835-17_835-14delCTTT or c.835-17C > G variants in SMN1 intron 6, which affect the amplification of SMN1 exon 7 during MLPA-P060 and qPCR testing. However, MLPA-P021 and NGS analyses were unaffected by these variants. These results support that additional detection methods should be employed in cases where the SMN1 copy number is ambiguous to minimize the misdiagnosis of SMA.

Novel lead thiazole aminoguanidines exhibited strong activity against Gram-positive bacteria. The potential targets of these substances are undecaprenyl diphosphate synthase (UPPS) and undecaprenyl diphosphate phosphatase (UPPP). Here, we report the synthesis and antibacterial evaluation of a library of thiazole aminoguanidines analogues, wherein the rotatable bond is inserted between the C2 position of thiazole and hydrophobic group. The molecular flexibility is increased, and new analogues with strong activity against MRSA and E. coli are produced. The best compound 4i showed rapid sterilization and low tendency to induce bacterial resistance. The IC50 of compound 4i to EcUPPS enzyme is 145 µmol L-1 (58 µg mL-1). Compound 4i can also inhibit and destroy bacterial biofilms. These thiazole aminoguanidines can be developed as potential therapeutic candidates in the future.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to assess the clinical epidemiological characteristics of children with electrical injuries and discuss the countermeasures for the prevention of electrical injuries in children. METHODS: The children with electrical injuries were grouped according to whether or not they were admitted to the hospital for treatment into inpatient and outpatient groups. Clinical data such as gender, causes of injury and injury-causing voltage distribution in different age groups were analyzed. The factors affecting hospitalization were subjected to χ2 test, Kruskal-Wallis H test, and logistic regression analysis. RESULTS: A total of 321 children were included with 37 divided into inpatient group and 284 divided into outpatient group. The incidence of electrical injuries was highest in children ≤6 years old and in the summer. There were significantly different in gender, place of occurrence, cause of injury and injury-causing voltage between the two groups (p < 0.05). Injury-causing voltage is an independent risk factor affecting hospitalization of children with electrical injuries (OR = 0.116, 95 %CI = 0.040-0.334, p = 0.000). In children ≤6 years old, boys suffered electrical injuries more frequently than girls; battery powered vehicle (47.53 %) was primarily the cause of injury; most of the patients (64.64 %) were exposed to low voltage below 100 Vs, mainly in the case of adolescent children. CONCLUSION: Male preschoolers accounted for the majority of electrical injury cases, and these accidents mostly happened in household electrical appliances and household battery cars. Overall, it is necessary to improve family electrical safety education and reinforce protective measures against electric injury to children.

ABSTRACT

STUDY OBJECTIVE: Fospropofol disodium is a propofol prodrug that is water-soluble and has a reduced risk of bacterial contamination and hypertriglyceridemia compared with propofol. Prior to implementing a large randomized trial, we investigated the feasibility, initial efficacy, and safety of fospropofol disodium compared with propofol in long-term mild-to-moderate sedation in intensive care units (ICUs). DESIGN: Single-centered, prospective, unblind, randomized, parallel-group clinical trial. SETTING: The general ICU of university-affiliated teaching hospital. PATIENTS: Adult patients (n = 60) expected to have mechanical ventilation for >24 h were enrolled and randomly assigned to the fospropofol or propofol group. INTERVENTIONS: The fospropofol group received continuous fospropofol disodium infusions and the propofol group received continuous propofol infusions. The sedation goal was a score of -3 to 0 on the Richmond Agitation and Sedation Scale (RASS). MEASUREMENTS: The primary outcome was the percentage of time spent in the target sedation range without rescue sedation. Safety outcomes were based on adverse events. Blood samples were collected to measure formate concentration in plasma. MAIN RESULTS: The median dose was 4.33 (IQR, 3.08-4.94) mg/kg/h in the fospropofol group and 1.96 (IQR, 1.44-2.94) mg/kg/h in the propofol group. The median percentage of time spent in the target RASS range without rescue sedation was identical in both groups, with 83.33% (IQR, 74.43%-100.00%) in the fospropofol group and 83.33% (IQR, 77.45%-100.00%) in the propofol group (p = 0.887). At least one adverse event was identifed in 23 (76.7%) fospropofol patients and 27 (90.0%) propofol patients. The most common adverse events were tachycardia and hypotension. No paresthesia, catheter-related bloodstream infection or propofol infusion syndrome in both groups was reported. Three patients in the fospropofol group had mild hypertriglyceridemia, and nine patients in propofol group had hypertriglyceridemia (mild in eight patients and moderate in one patient) (10% versus 30%, p = 0.104). The formate concentration in plasma was very low, and no significant difference was identified at any time point between the two groups. CONCLUSIONS: Fospropofol disodium appears to be a feasible, effective and safe sedative for patients receiving invasive mechanical ventilation with long-term sedation.

Based on environmental monitoring data and meteorological observation data from 2016 to 2022 in Beijing, combined with backward trajectory clustering and potential source area contribution analysis, the characteristics, meteorological impacts, and potential source areas of ozone (O3) pollution were analyzed. The results showed that there was a total of 41 O3 pollution processes with jumping characteristics in Beijing from 2016 to 2022, with an average of 5.9 times a year. The occurrence time was concentrated in May to July, and the day of the jump (OJD2) was higher than the day before the jump (OJD1). The average value of ρ(O3-8h) was 78.3% higher, and the peak concentration was 78.9% higher. The high O3 concentration zone in the OJD2 region exhibited a characteristic of advancing from south to north. The main reasons for the occurrence of jumped O3 pollution in Beijing could be summarized as local accumulation caused by unfavorable meteorological conditions and regional transmission impact. The occurrence of jump-type ozone pollution was characterized by an increase in southerly wind frequency, temperature rise, pressure decrease, and precipitation decrease. The increase in southerly wind frequency provided conditions for the transport of O3 and its precursors, and rapid photochemical reactions occurred under local high temperatures, with less superimposed precipitation, comprehensively pushing up the ozone concentration level of OJD2. Six air mass transporting pathways were identified through clustering analysis; the air mass from the direction north of OJD2 decreased by 11.2%, whereas the air mass from the south and east directions increased by 6.7% and 4.4%, respectively, with the air masses mainly transmitting over short distances. The ozone concentration corresponding to the south and east directions was relatively high, making a significant contribution to Beijing's pollution. The analysis of potential source areas revealed that the main potential source areas of OJD2 ozone pollution were the central, southern, and eastern parts of Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei, which contributed 82.6% to the pollution trajectory. There was a significant contribution of regional transport during jump-type ozone pollution, and it is necessary to strengthen joint prevention and control in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Region.

Here, we present a protocol for the examination of immune cells in the murine conjunctiva and lacrimal gland using flow cytometry. We describe steps for dissection, preparation of high-quality single-cell suspensions, utilization of comprehensive staining panels, and optimization of flow cytometry voltage. We then detail procedures for compensation adjustments and the implementation of effective gating strategies. ABSTRACT

Background: Radial artery cannulation is an invasive procedure commonly performed in patients in the perioperative time, in the intensive care unit, and in other critical care settings. The current study aimed to explore the preoperative risk factors associated with difficult radial artery cannulation and develop a nomogram model for adult patients undergoing major surgery. This nomogram may optimize preoperative clinical decision-making, thereby reducing the number of puncture attempts and preventing associated complications. Methods: This was a single-center prospective cohort study. Between December 2021 and May 2022, 530 adult surgical patients were enrolled. The patients were randomized into the training and validation cohorts at a ratio of 8:2. Radial artery cannulation was performed before the induction of anesthesia. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed to identify variables that were significantly associated with difficult radial artery cannulation. These variables were then incorporated into the nomogram. The discrimination and calibration abilities of the nomogram were assessed. Results: One hundred and seventy-three (41.7 %) patients in the training cohort had difficult radial artery cannulation. Based on multivariate analysis, the independent risk factors were wrist circumference, anatomical abnormalities, BMI <18.5 kg/m2, grade II hypertension, hypotension, and history of chemotherapy and stroke. The concordance indices were 0.765 (95 % confidence interval [CI]: 0.719-0.812) and 0.808 (95 % CI: 0.725-0.890) in the training and validation cohorts, respectively. The calibration curve showed good agreement between the actual and predicted risks. Conclusions: A preoperative predictive model for difficult radial artery cannulation in adult patients undergoing surgery was developed and validated. This model can provide reliable data for optimizing preoperative clinical decision-making.

ABSTRACT

Cortex-like cytoskeleton, a thin layer of cross-linked cytoplasmic proteins underlying the cell membrane, plays an essential role in modulating membrane behavior and cell surface properties. However, bottom-up construction of functional cortex-like cytoskeleton in artificial cells remains a challenge. Here, we present metal-phenolic networks as artificial cortical cytoskeletons in liposome-based artificial cells. The metal-phenolic cytoskeleton-reinforced artificial cells exhibit long-term stability, enhanced resistance to a variety of harsh environments, tunable permeability, and well-controlled morphologies. We anticipate that our stable artificial cell models will stride forward to practical applications of liposome-based microsystem.

Objectives: The study aims to explore the ocular biometry of a myopic population in Northern China, focusing specifically on anterior and posterior segment lengths. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study. The medical records of 3458 myopic patients who underwent refractive surgery were evaluated. Axial length (AL), anterior chamber depth (ACD), lens thickness (LT) and other biometric parameters were measured using the IOL Master 700. The study determined the anterior segment length (ASL = ACD + LT), the posterior segment length (PSL = AL - ASL) and the ratio of ASL to PSL (ASL/PSL). Results: This study included 3458 eyes from 3458 myopic patients (1171 men and 2287 women). The mean age was 27.38 ± 6.88, ranging from 16 to 48 years old. The mean ASL was 7.35 ± 0.27 mm, and the mean PSL was 18.39 ± 1.18 mm. The ASL and PSL trends demonstrate an age-related increase for both genders, with notable gender-specific variations. Across most age groups, males typically exhibited higher ASLs and PSLs than females, with the exception of the 35-40 and 40-45 age groups. The ASL and PSL consistently increased with a rising AL. The AL strongly correlates with the PSL and negatively correlates with the ASL/PSL ratio. The ACD and LT moderately correlate with the ASL, but an increased LT does not imply a longer posterior segment. The CCT and SE show little correlation with axial eye parameters. Conclusions: Among Chinese myopic patients, a longer ASL and PSL were correlated with older age and the male gender. The AL strongly correlates positively with the PSL and negatively correlates with the ASL/PSL ratio. An elongation of the posterior segment may primarily account for an eyeball's lengthening.
