ABSTRACT

Modeling chemical reactions with quantum chemical methods is challenging when the electronic structure varies significantly throughout the reaction and when electronic excited states are involved. Multireference methods, such as complete active space self-consistent field (CASSCF), can handle these multiconfigurational situations. However, even if the size of the needed active space is affordable, in many cases, the active space does not change consistently from reactant to product, causing discontinuities in the potential energy surface. The localized active space SCF (LASSCF) is a cheaper alternative to CASSCF for strongly correlated systems with weakly correlated fragments. The method is used for the first time to study a chemical reaction, namely the bond dissociation of a mono-, di-, and triphenylsulfonium cation. LASSCF calculations generate smooth potential energy scans more easily than the corresponding, more computationally expensive CASSCF calculations while predicting similar bond dissociation energies. Our calculations suggest a homolytic bond cleavage for di- and triphenylsulfonium and a heterolytic pathway for monophenylsulfonium.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI) who are admitted to the intensive care unit often exhibit critical conditions; thus, early prediction of in-hospital mortality is crucial. In this study, we aimed to develop a reliable and easily promotable model for predicting the in-hospital mortality of critically ill patients with TBI using easily accessible indicators and validate the model using external data. METHODS: Patient data from the Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care-IV 2.2 database were used as training and internal validation sets to establish and internally validate the prognostic model. Data from the Affiliated Dongyang Hospital of Wenzhou Medical University were used for external validation. The Boruta algorithm was used for the initial feature selection, followed by univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses to identify the final independent predictors. The predictive performance was evaluated using a receiver operating characteristic curve, calibration curve, clinical practicality decision curve analysis, and clinical impact curve. RESULTS: This study included 3225 patients (training set: 2042; internal validation set: 874; and external validation set: 309). Ten variables were selected for inclusion in the nomogram model: age, mechanical ventilation usage, vasoactive agent usage, intracerebral hemorrhage, temperature, respiration rate, white blood cell count, platelet count, red blood cell distribution width, and glucose. The nomogram demonstrated good predictive performance in both the internal and external validation sets. INTERPRETATION: We developed an externally validated nomogram that exhibited good discrimination, calibration, and clinical utility for predicting in-hospital mortality in critically ill patients with TBI.

ABSTRACT

The threat of neonicotinoids to insect pollinators, particularly honeybees (Apis mellifera), is a global concern, but the risk of chiral neonicotinoids to insect larvae remains poorly understood. In the current study, we evaluated the acute and chronic toxicity of dinotefuran enantiomers to honeybee larvae in vitro and explored the mechanism of toxicity. The results showed that the acute median lethal dose (LD50) of S-dinotefuran to honeybee larvae was 30.0 µg/larva after oral exposure for 72 h, which was more toxic than rac-dinotefuran (92.7 µg/larva) and R-dinotefuran (183.6 µg/larva). Although the acute toxicity of the three forms of dinotefuran to larvae was lower than that to adults, chronic exposure significantly reduced larval survival, larval weight, and weight of newly emerged adults. Analysis of gene expression and hormone titer indicated that dinotefuran affects larval growth and development by interfering with nutrient digestion and absorption and the molting system. Analysis of hemolymph metabolome further revealed that disturbances in the neuroactive ligand-receptor interaction pathway and energy metabolism are the key mechanisms of dinotefuran toxicity to bee larvae. In addition, melatonin and vitellogenin are used by larvae to cope with dinotefuran-induced oxidative stress. Our results contribute to a comprehensive understanding of dinotefuran damage to bees and provide new insights into the mechanism of enantioselective toxicity of insecticides to insect larvae.

ABSTRACT

Different from the previous neutral reaction solvent system, this work explores the synthesis of Al-oxo rings in ionic environments. Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) formed by quaternary ammonium salts hydrogen bond acceptor (HBA) and phenols hydrogen bond donor (HBD) further reduce the melting point of the reaction system and provide an ionic environment. Further, the quaternary ammonium salt was chosen as the HBA because it contains a halogen anion that matches the size of the central cavity of the molecular ring. Based on this thought, five Al8 ion pair cocrystals were synthesized via "DES thermal". The general formula is Q+ ⊂ {Cl@[Al8(BD)8(µ2-OH)4L12]} (AlOC-180-AlOC-185, Q+ = tetrabutylammonium, tetrapropylammonium, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazole; HBD = phenol, p-chlorophenol, p-fluorophenol; HL = benzoic acid, 1-naphthoic acid, 1-pyrenecarboxylic acid, anthracene-9-carboxylic acid). Structural studies reveal that the phenol-coordinated Al molecular ring and the quaternary ammonium ion pair form the cocrystal compounds. The halogen anions in the DES component are confined in the center of the molecular ring, and the quaternary ammonium cations are located in the organic shell. Such an adaptive cocrystal binding pattern is particularly evident in the structures coordinated with low-symmetry ligands such as naphthoic acid and pyrene acid. Finally, the optical behavior of these cocrystal compounds is understood from the analysis of crystal structure and theoretical calculation.

ABSTRACT

STUDY QUESTION: Can pregnancy outcomes following fresh elective single embryo transfer (eSET) in gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) antagonist protocols increase using a gonadotropin (Gn) step-down approach with cessation of GnRH antagonist on the day of hCG administration (hCG day) in patients with normal ovarian response? SUMMARY ANSWER: The modified GnRH antagonist protocol using the Gn step-down approach and cessation of GnRH antagonist on the hCG day is effective in improving live birth rates (LBRs) per fresh eSET cycle. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Currently, there is no consensus on optimal GnRH antagonist regimens. Studies have shown that fresh GnRH antagonist cycles result in poorer pregnancy outcomes than the long GnRH agonist (GnRHa) protocol. Endometrial receptivity is a key factor that contributes to this phenomenon. STUDY DESIGN, SIZE, DURATION: An open label randomized controlled trial (RCT) was performed between November 2021 and August 2022. There were 546 patients allocated to either the modified GnRH antagonist or the conventional antagonist protocol at a 1:1 ratio. PARTICIPANTS/MATERIALS, SETTING, METHODS: Both IVF and ICSI cycles were included, and the sperm samples used were either fresh or frozen from the partner, or from frozen donor ejaculates. The primary outcome was the LBRs per fresh SET cycle. Secondary outcomes included rates of implantation, clinical and ongoing pregnancy, miscarriage, and ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS), as well as clinical outcomes of ovarian stimulation. MAIN RESULTS AND THE ROLE OF CHANCE: Baseline demographic features were not significantly different between the two ovarian stimulation groups. However, in the intention-to-treat (ITT) population, the LBRs in the modified antagonist group were significantly higher than in the conventional group (38.1% [104/273] vs. 27.5% [75/273], relative risk 1.39 [95% CI, 1.09-1.77], P = 0.008). Using a per-protocol (PP) analysis which included all the patients who received an embryo transfer, the LBRs in the modified antagonist group were also significantly higher than in the conventional group (48.6% [103/212] vs. 36.8% [74/201], relative risk 1.32 [95% CI, 1.05-1.66], P = 0.016). The modified antagonist group achieved significantly higher implantation rates, and clinical and ongoing pregnancy rates than the conventional group in both the ITT and PP analyses (P < 0.05). The two groups did not show significant differences between the number of oocytes retrieved or mature oocytes, two-pronuclear zygote (2PN) rates, the number of embryos obtained, blastocyst progression and good-quality embryo rates, early miscarriage rates, or OHSS incidence rates (P > 0.05). LIMITATIONS, REASONS FOR CAUTION: A limitation of our study was that the subjects were not blinded to the treatment allocation in the RCT trial. Only women under 40 years of age who had a good prognosis were included in the analysis. Therefore, use of the modified antagonist protocol in older patients with a low ovarian reserve remains to be investigated. In addition, the sample size for Day 5 elective SET was small, so larger trials will be required to strengthen these findings. WIDER IMPLICATIONS OF THE FINDINGS: The modified GnRH antagonist protocol using the Gn step-down approach and cessation of GnRH antagonist on hCG day improved the LBRs per fresh eSET cycle in normal responders. ABSTRACT

Inflammation, apoptosis and oxidative stress play crucial roles in the deterioration of severe acute pancreatitis-associated acute respiratory distress syndrome (SAP-ARDS). Unfortunately, despite a high mortality rate of 45 %[1], there are limited treatment options available for ARDS outside of last resort options such as mechanical ventilation and extracorporeal support strategies[2]. This study investigated the potential therapeutic role and mechanisms of AQP9 inhibitor RG100204 in two animal models of severe acute pancreatitis, inducing acute respiratory distress syndrome: 1) a sodium-taurocholate induced rat model, and 2) and Cerulein and lipopolysaccharide induced mouse model. RG100204 treatment led to a profound reduction in inflammatory cytokine expression in pancreatic, and lung tissue, in both models. In addition, infiltration of CD68 + and CD11b + cells into these tissues were reduced in RG100204 treated SAP animals, and edema and SAP associated tissue damage were improved. Moreover, we demonstrate that RG100204 reduced apoptosis in the lungs of rat SAP animals, and reduces NF-κB signaling, NLRP3, expression, while profoundly increasing the Nrf2-dependent anti oxidative stress response. We conclude that AQP9 inhibition is a promising strategy for the treatment of pancreatitis and its systemic complications, such as ARDS.

ABSTRACT

Riverine islands are widespread alluvium wetlands developed in large rivers, and bacterial communities are crucial to their ecological function, yet their assembly processes are rarely addressed. The ecosystem services provided by the middle and the lower Yangtze are primarily threatened by pollution discharge from agricultural land use, and resource overutilization (e.g., embankments), respectively. Here, we assessed bacterial community assembly processes and their drivers within riverine islands in the middle Yangtze River (MR islands) and those in the lower reach (LR islands). A significant distance-decay relationship was observed, although the turnover rate was lower than that of the terrestrial ecosystem with less connectivity. Deterministic and stochastic processes jointly shaped community patterns, and the influence of stochastic increased from 26% in MR islands to 59% for those in LR islands. Meanwhile, the bacterial community in MR islands was controlled more by inorganic nitrogen availability, whereas those in LR islands were governed by pH and EC, although those factors explained a limited fraction of variation in the bacterial community. Potential indicator taxa (affiliated with Nocardioides and Lysobacter) characterized the waterway transport pollution. Overall, our study demonstrated that bacterial community dissimilarity and the importance of dispersal limitation increased concurrently along the flow direction, while distinct local factors further determined bacterial community compositions by selecting habitat-specificity taxa and particularly metabolism function. These findings enhanced our understanding of the mechanisms driving changes in bacterial communities of riverine islands subject to increased anthropogenic impacts.IMPORTANCERivers are among the most threatened ecosystems globally and face multiple stressors related to human activity. However, linkages between microbial diversity patterns and assembly processes in rivers remain unclear, especially in riverine islands developed in large rivers. Our findings reveal that distinct factors result in divergent bacterial community compositions and functional profiles in the riverine islands in the middle Yangtze and those in the lower Yangtze, with substantial differentiation in deterministic and stochastic processes that jointly contribute to bacterial community assemblages. Additionally, keystone species may play important metabolic roles in coping with human-related disturbances. This study provides an improved understanding of relationships between microbial diversity patterns and ecosystem functions under environmental changes in large river ecosystems.

ABSTRACT

Photothermal hydrogenation of carbon dioxide (CO2) into value-added products is an ideal solution for addressing the energy crisis and mitigating CO2 emissions. However, achieving high product selectivity remains challenging due to the simultaneous occurrence of numerous competing intermediate reactions during CO2 hydrogenation. We present a novel approach featuring isolated single-atom nickel (Ni) anchored onto indium oxide (In2O3) nanocrystals, serving as an effective photothermal catalyst for CO2 hydrogenation into methane (CH4) with a remarkable near-unity (∼99%) selectivity. Experiments and theoretical simulations have confirmed that isolated Ni sites on the In2O3 surface can effectively stabilize the intermediate products of the CO2 hydrogenation reaction and reduce the transition state energy barrier, thereby changing the reaction path to achieve ultrahigh selective methanation. This study provides comprehensive insights into the design of single-atom catalysts for the highly selective photothermal catalytic hydrogenation of CO2 to methane.

ABSTRACT

This study assessed the knowledge of 12- to 15-year-old male junior high school students of HPV and HPV vaccines and their willingness to be vaccinated against it. From March to May 2023, students from six junior high schools in Zhejiang Province were randomly selected to complete an online, anonymous, self-administered questionnaire. Of the 1786 students, 618 (34.6%) reported knowledge of HPV vaccine. In general, junior high school boys have low general knowledge about HPV, the consequences of HPV infection, and the effects of HPV vaccination. Multivariate analysis showed that the subgroup scoring 6-7 on the measure of the consequences of HPV infection(7 questions with 1 score for each correct answer) compared to the subgroup scoring 0, the subgroups scoring 2 and 3 on the measure of the preventive effect of HPV vaccine(3 questions with 1 score for each correct answer) compared to the subgroup scoring 0 were were more likely to be willing to be vaccinated against HPV. Hearing that someone close to them had cancer, believing that men also need to be vaccinated against HPV, knowing that someone close to them had been vaccinated against HPV, and being concerned about cervical cancer in their female sexual partners were all more likely to generate positive responses. HPV vaccine education for this group of students should emphasize the possibility and consequences of HPV infection in males, along with the importance and benefits of HPV vaccination; actual cases of vaccination in students around them can be used to achieve this goal.

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to investigate the correlation between endometriosis (EMS) and adverse obstetric outcomes. METHODS: In this retrospective study 2,925 cesarean section cases were analyzed at the Women and Children's Hospital of Ningbo University, Department of Obstetrics, between May 2019 and December 2023. The study included 1,363 women diagnosed with endometriosis during pregnancy at the time of surgery (study group) and 1,562 women without such a diagnosis (control group). The comparative assessment covered the age of first-time mothers, number of pregnancies and births, gestational age at delivery, incidence rates of assisted reproductive technology (ART), spontaneous abortion, preterm birth, placenta previa, placental adhesion, and postpartum hemorrhage. RESULTS: The study group demonstrated a higher average age of first-time mothers, fewer pregnancies and births, and a significantly shorter gestational age at delivery (P < 0.05) compared to the control group. Incidences of primary infertility, spontaneous abortion, and ART utilization were higher in the study group. The occurrence of placenta previa, placental adhesion, and postpartum hemorrhage was also higher in the study group, indicating significant statistical differences (P < 0.05). No significant difference was observed in preterm birth rates between the groups (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION: Pregnancy in women with endometriosis is associated with a higher likelihood of adverse outcomes, therefore highlighting the need for increased clinical awareness.

ABSTRACT

Fenazaquin, a potent insecticide widely used to control phytophagous mites, has recently emerged as a potential solution for managing Varroa destructor mites in honeybees. However, the comprehensive impact of fenazaquin on honeybee health remains insufficiently understood. Our current study investigated the acute and chronic toxicity of fenazaquin to honeybee larvae, along with its influence on larval hemolymph metabolism and gut microbiota. Results showed that the acute median lethal dose (LD50) of fenazaquin for honeybee larvae was 1.786 µg/larva, and the chronic LD50 was 1.213 µg/larva. Although chronic exposure to low doses of fenazaquin exhibited no significant effect on larval development, increasing doses of fenazaquin resulted in significant increases in larval mortality, developmental time, and deformity rates. At the metabolic level, high doses of fenazaquin inhibited nucleotide, purine, and lipid metabolism pathways in the larval hemolymph, leading to energy metabolism disorders and physiological dysfunction. Furthermore, high doses of fenazaquin reduced gut microbial diversity and abundance, characterized by decreased relative abundance of functional gut bacterium Lactobacillus kunkeei and increased pathogenic bacterium Melissococcus plutonius. The disrupted gut microbiota, combined with the observed gut tissue damage, could potentially impair food digestion and nutrient absorption in the larvae. Our results provide valuable insights into the complex and diverse effects of fenazaquin on honeybee larvae, establishing an important theoretical basis for applying fenazaquin in beekeeping.

ABSTRACT

The concentration of heavy metals (HMs) in aquaculture pond sediments significantly affects aquatic food safety and environmental quality. The contamination characteristics, drivers and potential sources of HMs in typical bulk freshwater aquaculture pond sediments in major provinces of China were systematically investigated using a variety of methods and models. Specifically, 130 surface sediment samples were collected from the study area, and the geoaccumulation index (Igeo) and potential ecological risk index (RI) were used to jointly evaluate the characteristics of the HMs. Spearman's correlation and redundancy analysis revealed the main drivers of the HMs. Additionally, the positive matrix factorization (PMF) model and absolute principal component score-multiple linear regression (APCS-MLR) model were used to identify the sources of HMs. The results revealed that the pond sediments were safe for fish culture in most of the study areas. Aquafeed protein content is an important driver of HM concentrations in sediments. The total organic carbon (TOC) content, percentage of clay particles, and pH of the aquaculture pond sediments determined the sediment HMs enrichment abilities as 13.6 %, 52 %, and 9.8 %, respectively. Cd, a significantly enriched pollutant, posed a greater ecological risk than the other five HMs (Cr, Cu, Zn, As, and Pb). Three sources of HMs were identified, including agricultural activity (e.g., aquafeeds, pesticides, and fertilizers), industrial production, and natural sources, with contributions of 44.29 %, 36.66 %, and 19.05 %, respectively. This study provides a scientific basis for minimizing the input and accumulation of HMs in freshwater aquaculture pond sediments, and this can provide insights into the prevention and control of the ecological risks posed by HMs.

ABSTRACT

AIMS: The purpose of this study was to investigate the status of self-management behaviour and illness perceptions and to examine illness perceptions in relation to self-management behaviour in elderly patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted, and 152 elderly COPD patients were recruited via the convenience sampling method. The COPD Self-Management Scale and the Revised Illness Perception Questionnaire for COPD patients were used to examine self-management behaviour and illness perceptions. Pearson correlation analysis, univariate analysis and hierarchical linear regression analysis were used to explore illness perceptions in relation to self-management behaviour. RESULTS: The mean overall score for self-management behaviour was 2.90 ± 0.39. Among the subscales of self-management behaviour, information management had the lowest score of 2.20 ± 0.76. Patients' demographic and clinical characteristics, including educational level, smoking status, type of primary caregiver, home oxygen therapy and COPD duration, were found to be significant determinants of self-management behaviour. After controlling for these variables, several illness perception subscales, including treatment control, personal control, coherence, timeline cyclical and identity, were significantly correlated with self-management behaviour. CONCLUSIONS: This study confirmed that elderly COPD patients' self-management behaviour was unsatisfactory and that illness perceptions were significant determinants of self-management behaviour. The findings may contribute to the development of self-management interventions for elderly COPD patients.

Childhood obesity might threaten children's current and adulthood health outcomes. Previous studies have illustrated the positive effects of physical activity on weight control; however, there is a lack of evidence on the optimal dose of physical activity. Therefore, we aimed to explore the relationship between physical activity and overweight and obesity, as well as the optimal threshold for physical activity. The median (interquartile range) and number (proportion) were used to describe the statistics. The Mann-Whitney U test and chi-square test were used for an univariable analysis. The generalized additive model with a smooth function was used to depict the preliminary relationship between physical activity and overweight and obesity. The cut-off level of physical activity was identified using AddFor algorithms, and a logistic regression model was applied to explore the multivariable relationship between physical activity and overweight and obesity after adjusting for control variables. According to the statistical analyses, 24.3% of 842 children and adolescents had overweight and obesity. The average number of days that the participants engaged in more than one hour of physical activity was three days a week. The optimal cut-off level of physical activity for the prevention of childhood overweight and obesity was 4 times a week. The participants who exercised more than four times a week (AOR(95% CI) = 0.56(0.38, 0.83), p = 0.004) were less likely to be overweight and obese. In the context of the general lack of physical activity among children and adolescents, we recommend that children and adolescents engage in 60 min of physical activity more than four times a week for a healthy weight.

ABSTRACT

Tropilaelaps mercedesae, an ectoparasitic mite of honeybees, is currently a severe health risk to Apis mellifera colonies in Asia and a potential threat to the global apiculture industry. However, our understanding of the physiological and developmental regulation of this pest remains significantly insufficient. Using ultra-high resolution mass spectrometry, we provide the first comprehensive proteomic profile of T. mercedesae spanning its entire post-embryonic ontogeny, including protonymphs, deutonymphs, mature adults, and reproductive mites. Consequently, a total of 4,422 T. mercedesae proteins were identified, of which 2,189 proteins were significantly differentially expressed (FDR < 0.05) throughout development and maturation. Our proteomic data provide an important resource for understanding the biology of T. mercedesae, and will contribute to further research and effective control of this devastating honeybee pest.

ABSTRACT

AIMS: This study aimed to explore the change trend and group heterogeneity of psychosocial adjustment level and to determine its influencing factors among young and middle-aged patients with first-episode acute myocardial infarction (AMI). METHODS AND RESULTS: The Psychosocial Adjustment Scale of Illness was used to assess the psychosocial adjustment level of the patients at 1, 3, and 6 months after discharge, respectively. Data were analyzed using Pearson correlation analysis, generalized estimating equations, and growth mixed models. A total of 233 patients were included, and their psychosocial adjustment scores at the three-time points were 57.18 ± 15.50, 36.17 ± 15.02, and 24.22 ± 12.98, respectively. The trajectories of changes in patients' psychosocial adjustment levels were divided into three latent categories: moderate adjustment improvement group (72.5%), low adjustment improvement group (16.3%), and persistent maladjustment group (11.2%). Among them, predictors of the persistent maladjustment group included no spouse, low monthly family income per capita, normal body mass index, never smoking, never exercising, combined with hyperlipidemia, low social support, submission coping, and high perceived stress. CONCLUSIONS: The psychosocial adjustment level of young and middle-aged patients with first-episode AMI showed an upward trend within 6 months after discharge, and there was group heterogeneity in the change trajectory of psychosocial adjustment level. It is suggested that a multi-center, large-sample longitudinal study should be carried out in the future, and the time of follow-up investigation should be extended to further clarify the change trajectory and influencing factors of psychosocial adjustment of patients with different subtypes, to provide the theoretical basis for formulating targeted intervention programs.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to develop and validate a prediction model for premature circuit clotting of continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) in critically ill patients. DESIGN: A retrospective cohort study was conducted on ICU patients undergoing CRRT. The Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care-III Clinical Database CareVue subset and Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care-IV were utilized for model development, while the eICU Collaborative Research Database was employed for external validation. Predictive factors were selected through Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator Regression and univariate logistic regression. A prediction model was then developed using binary logistic regression. Internal and external validations assessed the model's discrimination, calibration, and clinical net benefit. RESULTS: This study encompassed 2531 patients overall, with a premature circuit clotting rate of 31.88 %. The prediction model comprises five variables: body temperature, anticoagulation, mean arterial pressure, maximum transmembrane pressure change within two hours, and vasopressor. The model demonstrated robust predictive performance, achieving an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 0.897 (95 % CI: 0.879-0.915) in the training set and 0.877 (95 % CI: 0.852-0.902) in the external validation set. Internal validation yielded a Brier score of 0.087, while external validation showed a Brier score of 0.120. Calibration curves indicated good model calibration for both validations. The decision curve analysis indicates that the model yields a clinical net benefit across a wide range of decision thresholds. CONCLUSION: The model demonstrates robust discrimination, calibration, and clinical net benefit, with readily available variables indicating substantial potential for valuable clinical applications. IMPLICATIONS FOR CLINICAL PRACTICE: Healthcare providers in the ICU can leverage the model to evaluate the risk of premature circuit clotting in critically ill patients undergoing continuous renal replacement therapy, facilitating timely intervention to mitigate its incidence.
