ABSTRACT

Objective To observe the anatomical and functional changes in patients with different degrees of myopic traction maculopathy (MTM) after vitrectomy. Methods It was a retrospective case series study.Forty-seven consecutive patients (47 eyes) diagnosed with MTM were studied between January 2010 and May 2014.There were 38 females (38 eyes) and 9 male (9 eyes),mean age was (65.13±6.98) years, mean axial length was (29.23±1.77) mm.The eyes was divided into 3 groups according to the macular morphologies on optical coherence tomography (OCT),including macular retinoschisis only group (MRS group,18 eyes),foveal retinal detachment group (FD group,13 eyes) and full-thickness macular hole group (MH group,16 eyes). All the eyes underwent minimum resolution angle in logarithmic (logMAR) best corrected visual acuity (BCVA),intraocular pressure, axial length,A or B-ultrasonography,fundus photography,OCT and microperimetry examinations. The average logMAR BCVA of 47 eyes was 1.43±0.52.The center retinal thickness (CRT) of eyes in MRS and FD group was (528.45± 167.61) μm.All the patients underwent pars plana vitrectomy combined with internal limiting membrane peeling. The mean follow-up period was 23.4 months. The changes of logMAR BCVA,microperimetry and macular microstructural were observed. Results At the final follow-up,the logMAR BCVA of 47 eyes was 0.86 ± 0.42,which improved compared with the preoperative vision (t=7.36,P< 0.001).The mean CRT of eyes in MRS and FD group was (250.90 ± 91.81) μm,which improved compared with the preoperative CRT (t=8.17,P<0.001).In MRS group, the retina was attached in 18 eyes.In FD group, the retina was attached in 11 eyes,MH was observed in 2 eyes.In MH group, recurrent retinal detachment was observed in 1 eye.The differences of logMAR BCVA and retinal sensitivity among MRS,FD and MH groups were significant (x2 =6.38,11.08;P=0.030,0.004).Conclusion The macular structural and visual function in MTM eyes with macular retinoschisis only after vitrectomy are better than those in MTM eyes with MH and foveal retinal detachment.

ABSTRACT

AIMS: To investigate the healing mechanism of the rabbit's sclerotomy sites undergoing the Transconjunctival Sutureless Vitrectomy (TSV). METHODS: Thirty-two rabbits (Thirty-two eyes) were divided into four groups: The rabbits performed with the core vitrectomy and air tamponade were Group A, performed with the core vitrectomy as Group B, performed with the non-core vitrectomy and air tamponade as Group C, and the non-core vitrectomy as Group D. The sclerotomy sites were observed by the Ultrasound Biomicroscope (UBM model 840, Humphrey Instruments, San Leandro, CA, USA) on days 1, 3, 5, and 9 postoperatively, and the diameter of the internal and the external aperture was estimated on postoperative day 1. The pathological study of the sclerotomy sites on days 3, 5, and 9 postoperatively were investigated under the light microscope. RESULTS: The Ultrasound Biomicroscope and the pathological sections showed that the healing course of the sclerotomy sites lasted nine days. On postoperative day 1, the vitreous incarceration (19/32, 59.4%), the fluid cavity (18/32, 56.3%), and the air cavity under the conjunctiva (7/16, 43.8%) existed in some cases. The diameter of the internal aperture in Group A and Group B was less than Group C and Group D on day 1 postoperatively, P<0.001. The diameter of the external aperture did not show significant difference in any of the groups. The pathological study verified the healing course was the granulation reaction. CONCLUSION: The healing mechanism of the rabbit's sclerotomy sites undergoing the (TSV) is the granulation reaction accompanied with the elastic recovery of the sclera.

ABSTRACT

Objective To observe the permeability and stability of the transfection of antisense oligonucleotide (ASODN) hybridized epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) to retinal glial cells (RG). Methods Phosphorothioate and unmodified EGFR ASODN conjugated with 5′ isothiocyanate (5′ FITC) were encapsulated with or without lipofectin, and then added into human retinal glial cells culture media. The cellular permeability and stability of the transfection were observed by fluorescence microscopy in fixed cells. Results In the absence of lipofectin, phosphorothioate and unmodified EGFR ASODN were found in a few RG cells at 30 minutes, and in about 50% RG cells at 4 hours. Phosphorothioate EGFR ASODN were kept in RG cells for 3 4 hours and disappeared at about 8 hours. In the presence of lipofectin, phosphorothioate and unmodified EGFR ASODN were found in a few RG cells at 15 minutes and about 70% 80% RG cells at 4 hours. Phosphorothioate EGFR ASODN were kept in cells for 10 12 hours, and phosphorothioate and unmodified EGFR ASODN were disappeared at about 14 hours and 4 hours respectively. Conclusion 5′ FITC EGFR ASODN encapsulated with lipofectin could enter RG cells and express stably in RG cells.

ABSTRACT

Objective To evaluate the effect of the four-port bimanual vitrectomy illuminated by assistants in severe vitreo-retinopathy. Design Retrospective case series. Participants 39 eyes of 39 patients of severve vitreoretinopathy. Methods Four-port bimanual vitrectomy illuminated by assistants were applied. All the patients were followed up for 6 to 18 months. The best corrected visual acuity and reattachment of retina were observed. Main Outcome Measures Operation duration, effect, and complications. Results All the 39 eyes were successfully operated. Time of membrane stripping of membrane ranged from 4 to 50 min (mean 16 min). No complications were found in operation. Retinal redetachment occurred in 4 case and vitreous rebleeding in 2 cases. No sclerotomy was found. Best corrected visual acuity improved in 35 eyes defined as 2-line increase in visual acuity chart or visual acuity from light perception to finger count post-operation. Conclusion Four-port bimanual vitrectomy has more advantages in the operation procedure. It is a promising method in treating patients with severve vitreoretinopathy.

ABSTRACT

0.05). Postoperative cataract incidence was higher in the patients without IOL implantation than that in the patients with IOL implantation. Postoperative cataract appeared 6 months after operation in the patients without IOL implantation, while it appeared 14 months after operation in the patients with IOL implantation. There was no significant difference in the postoperative complications between group A and group B. Conclusions Combined surgery is effective and safe for the selected patients of primary retinal detachment accompanied with cataract.
