ABSTRACT

Polyradical cages are of great interest because they show very fascinating physical and chemical properties, but many challenges remain, especially for their synthesis and characterization. Herein, we present the synthesis of a polyradical cation cage 14•+ through post-synthetic oxidation of a redox-active phenothiazine-based Pd2L4-type coordination cage 1. It's worth noting that 1 exhibits excellent reversible electrochemical and chemical redox activity due to the introduction of a bulky 3,5-di-tert-butyl-4-methoxyphenyl substituent. The generation of 14•+ through reversible electrochemical oxidation is investigated by in situ UV-vis-NIR and EPR spectroelectrochemistry. Meanwhile, chemical oxidation of 1 can also produce 14•+ which can be reversibly reduced back to the original cage 1, and the process is monitored by EPR and NMR spectroscopies. Eventually, we succeed in the isolation and single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis of 14•+, whose electronic structure and conformation are distinct to original 1. The magnetic susceptibility measurements indicate the predominantly antiferromagnetic interactions between the four phenothiazine radical cations in 14•+. We believe that our study including the facile synthesis methodology and in situ spectroelectrochemistry will shed some light on the synthesis and characterization of novel polyradical systems, opening more perspectives for developing functional supramolecular cages.

ABSTRACT

In this study, we designed and synthesized three conformation-adaptive Pd2L4- and Pd3L6-type coordination cages based on three dihydrophenazine-based ligands with different lengths. Interestingly, the shorter ligands L1 and L2 self-assembled into Pd2L4-type coordination cages while the longer ligand L3 formed Pd3L6-type one, mainly driven by the anion template effect. All coordination cages were confirmed through single-crystal X-ray diffraction, and their structural conformations underwent great changes compared with those of their corresponding ligands. Moreover, the conformational changes also significantly affected their photophysical and electrochemical properties which were distinct from their parent ligands.

ABSTRACT

The abnormal increase in low-density lipoprotein (LDL) in human blood is a main independent risk factor for the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis, whereas a reduced LDL level effectively lowers morbidity. It is important to develop LDL adsorption materials with high efficiency and selectivity, as well as to simplify their fabrication processes. In this paper, polysulfone (PSF), sulfonated polysulfone (SPSF), and sulfonated polysulfone/dextran (SPSF/GLU) membranes were successfully fabricated for LDL adsorption using a solution casting technique. Attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements confirmed the success of the preparation. The water contact angle decreased from 89.7 ± 3.4° (PSF) to 76.4 ± 3.2° (SPSF) and to 71.2 ± 1.9° (SPSF/GLU), respectively. BSA adsorption testing showed that the SPSF/GLU with surface enrichment of sulfonate groups and glycosyl groups possessed higher resistance to protein solution. The adsorption and desorption behaviors of the studied samples in single-protein or binary-protein solutions were systematically investigated by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), The results showed that SPSF/GLU, which had excellent resistance to protein adsorption, possessed a similar adsorption capacity to that of PSF. SPSF membrane exhibited excellent selective affinity for LDL in single and binary protein solutions, suggesting potential applications in LDL removal.

ABSTRACT

AIMS: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common endocrine disorder in the women of childbearing age. It is characterized by hyperandrogenism and abnormal follicular growth and ovulation. The polyol pathway is a glucose metabolism bypass pathway initiated by aldose reductase (ADR). Androgen induces the expression of ADR in the male reproductive tract, which has a general physiological significance for male reproductive function. Here we investigate whether hyperandrogenemia in PCOS leads to increased flux of the polyol pathway in ovarian tissue, which in turn affects follicular maturation and ovulation through oxidative stress. MAIN METHODS: We used clinical epidemiological methods to collect serum and granulosa cells from clinical subjects for a clinical case-control study. At the same time, cell biology and molecular biology techniques were used to conduct animal and cell experiments to further explore the mechanism of hyperandrogen-induced ovarian polyol pathway hyperactivity and damage to ovarian function. KEY FINDINGS: Here, we find that hyperandrogenism of PCOS can induce the expression of ovarian aldose reductase, which leads to the increase of the polyol pathway flux, and affects ovarian function through excessive oxidative stress. SIGNIFICANCE: Our research has enriched the pathological mechanism of PCOS and may provide a new clue for the clinical treatment of PCOS.

【Objective】 To explore the relationship of graduate students’ psychological stress and perceived stress with their mental health, and analyze the mediating effect of perceived stress. 【Methods】 We investigated 705 graduate students by Chinese College Student Mental Health Scale (CCSMHS), Chinese College Student Psychological Stress Scale (CCSPSS), and Perceived Stress Scale-10 (PSS). Correlation and structural equation model analysis was made. 【Results】 The graduate students’ psychological stress and perceived stress had significant correlation with their mental health. SEM analysis showed that perceived stress served as a partial mediation variable between psychological stress and mental health. Psychological stress had direct effects (0.216) for mental health and indirect effects (0.126) through perceived stress. 【Conclusion】 Graduate students’ psychological stress can influence their mental health directly, and can also reduce mental health level by increasing perceived stress. Perceived stress has partial mediating effect between psychological stress and mental health.

ABSTRACT

Despite declines in morbidity and mortality in recent years, ischemic stroke (IS) remains one of the leading causes of death and disability from cerebrovascular diseases. Addressing the controllable risk factors underpins the successful clinical management of IS. Hypertension is one of the most common treatable risk factors for IS and is associated with poor outcomes. Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring has revealed that patients with hypertension have a higher incidence of blood pressure variability (BPV) than those without hypertension. Meanwhile, increased BPV has been identified as a risk factor for IS. The risk of IS is higher and the prognosis after infarction is worse with higher BPV, no matter in the acute or subacute phase. BPV is multifactorial, with alterations reflecting individual physiological and pathological changes. This article reviews the current research advances in the relationship between BPV and IS, with an attempt to raise awareness of BPV among clinicians and IS patients, explore the increased BPV as a controllable risk factor for IS, and encourage hypertensive patients to control not only average blood pressure but also BPV and implement personalized blood pressure management.

ABSTRACT

The strong adhesion of thermally conductive silicone encapsulants on highly integrated electronic devices can avoid external damages and lead to an improved long-term reliability, which is critical for their commercial application. However, due to their low surface energy and chemical reactivity, the self-adhesive ability of silicone encapsulants to substrates need to be explored further. Here, we developed epoxy and alkoxy groups-bifunctionalized tetramethylcyclotetrasiloxane (D4H-MSEP) and boron-modified polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS-B), which were synthesized and utilized as synergistic adhesion promoters to provide two-component addition-cured liquid silicone rubber (LSR) with a good self-adhesion ability for applications in electronic packaging at moderate temperatures. The chemical structures of D4H-MSEP and PDMS-B were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The mass percentage of PDMS-B to D4H-MSEP, the adhesion promoters content and the curing temperature on the adhesion strength of LSR towards substrates were systematically investigated. In detail, the LSR with 2.0 wt% D4H-MSEP and 0.6 wt% PDMS-B exhibited a lap-shear strength of 1.12 MPa towards Al plates when curing at 80 °C, and the cohesive failure was also observed. The LSR presented a thermal conductivity of 1.59 W m-1 K-1 and good fluidity, which provided a sufficient heat dissipation ability and fluidity for potting applications with 85.7 wt% loading of spherical α-Al2O3. Importantly, 85 °C and 85% relative humidity durability testing demonstrated LSR with a good encapsulation capacity in long-term processes. This strategy endows LSR with a good self-adhesive ability at moderate temperatures, making it a promising material requiring long-term reliability in the encapsulation of temperature-sensitive electronic devices.

ABSTRACT

A polydimethylsiloxane armed with epoxy, alkoxy and acrylate groups was synthesized from silanol terminated-PDMS and epoxy and acrylate groups functionalized silane coupling agents, and utilized as the adhesion promoter (AP) to prepare addition-cured liquid silicone rubber that exhibited self-adhesion ability (SA-LSR) with biocompatible thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPU) sheets. The structural characteristics of AP were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, which demonstrated the strong adhesion to polyester-based TPU sheets due to a sufficient amount of acrylate groups, epoxy groups and silanol groups obtained by the hydrolysis of alkoxy groups. In detail, the peel-off strength of SA-LSR and TPU joints reached up to 7.63 N mm-1 after the optimization of adhesion promoter including type and content, and curing condition including time and temperature. The cohesive failure was achieved during the sample breakage process. Moreover, the SA-LSR showed a good storage stability under proper storage conditions. This design strategy provided the feasibility to combine the advantages of addition-cured liquid silicone rubber and plastics with low melting points, promoting the potential application range of those silicone-based materials.

ABSTRACT

Objective@#To explore the prevalence and related factors of depressive symptoms in Chinese college students before and after the COVID-19 epidemic and to provide a reference for mental health education and management.@*Methods@#Database of PubMed, Cochrane, CBM, WanFang, CNKI and CIP were searched for the studies on depressive symptoms in Chinese college students using the Self Rating Depression Scale (SDS) or the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D). All the literatures were classified according to the publication time before and after the epidemic around January 2020. Meta analysis was performed by using Stata15.1.@*Results@#There were 26 articles before the epidemic, with a total sample size of 76 816 participants, and 18 articles after the epidemic, with a total sample size of 102 653 participants . The detection rate of depressive symptoms in college students after the epidemic was higher than that before the epidemic (35.7%, 30.9%). Fifteen factors were included in the Meta analysis. There was a positive correlation between being third year in college and college students before the epidemic ( OR = 1.27 ). Before and after the epidemic, being fourth year in college,introvert personality,breakfast skipping,physically unhealthy,poor family economy,single parent,staying up late and poor sleep quality were all positively correlated with depression of college students ( OR =1.44,1.35;1.68,2.01;3.33,3.03;2.21,4.99;1.80,1.89;2.33,1.92;1.53,3.08;2.23,2.97), while high social support and physical exercise were negatively correlated with depression for depressive symptoms in college students( OR =0.57,0.55; 0.78, 0.60 )( P <0.05).@*Conclusion@#The detection rate of depressive symptoms among college students after the epidemic is higher. The effect of introversion, physical exercise, physically unhealthy, poor sleep quality and staying up late are higher after pandemic compared than before the epidemic. The targeted mental intervention and health education should be strengthened.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE@#To explore the correlation of temperament type and mother's emotional state with acute respiratory tract infections in children so as to provide evidence for comprehensive treatment of the infections.@*METHODS@#A total of 200 children aged between 3 and 6 were enrolled in this study from two kindergartens of Guangzhou and Hengyang. The mothers were invited to complete a questionnaire of the children's general information followed by assessment using children's temperament scale and the Depression-Anxiety-Stress Scale.@*RESULTS@#The total incidence of acute respiratory infection was significantly higher in children with a hard- to-raise temperament than the easy- to-raise children (P < 0.05); the incidences of acute rhinitis, acute pharyngitis, acute laryngitis and acute bronchitis were all significantly higher in the hard-to-raise children (P < 0.05). A significant positive correlation was identified between the total number of episodes of acute respiratory tract infection in children and their mothers' stress and anxiety levels (P < 0.01). Acute rhinitis and acute tracheitis in the children were both positively correlated with the mothers' stress scores (P < 0.05), while acute pharyngitis and acute laryngitis were positively correlated with the mothers' anxiety scores (P < 0.05), while acute bronchitis was positively correlated with the mothers' stress and anxiety scores (P < 0.05). Multiple linear regression analysis with the factors influencing the types of acute respiratory tract infections in children as the independent variables suggested that the easy-to-raise type of temperament was a protective factor against acute rhinitis in children (P < 0.05), while mothers' anxiety was a risk factor of acute laryngitis in children (P < 0.05); the mothers' stress was a risk factor for acute bronchitis in children (P < 0.05).@*CONCLUSION@#Acute respiratory tract infection in children is closely related to the temperament type of the children and the emotional state of the mothers, which are important therapeutic targets in comprehensive interventions of acute respiratory tract infection in children.

ABSTRACT

Emerging evidence shows that chronic restraint stress (CRS) can induce cognitive dysfunction, which involves in hippocampal damage. Our recent research reveals that hydrogen sulfide (H2S), a novel gasotransmitter, protects against CRS-induced cognitive impairment, but the underlying mechanism remains unclear. Adiponectin, the most abundant plasma adipokine, has been shown to elicit neuroprotective property and attenuate cognitive impairment. Hence, the present work was aimed to explore whether adiponectin mediates the protective effect of H2S on CRS-induced cognitive impairment by inhibiting hippocampal damage. Results found that administration of Anti-Acrp30, a neutralizing antibody of adiponectin, obviously reverses sodium hydrosulfide (NaHS, an exogenous H2S donor)-induced the inhibition on CRS-induced cognitive impairment according to Y-maze test, Novel object recognition (NOR) test, and Morris water maze (MWM) test. In addition, Anti-Acrp30 blocked the protective effect of NaHS on hippocampal apoptosis in rats-subjected with CRS as evidenced by the pathological changes in hippocampus tissues in hematoxylin and eosin (HE) staining and the increases in the amount of the condensed and stained to yellowish-brown or brownish yellow neuron nucleuses in terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase transfer-mediated dUTP nick end-labeling (TUNEL) staining as well as the expression of hippocampal pro-apoptotic protein (Bax), and a decrease in the expression of hippocampal anti-apoptotic protein (Bcl-2). Furthermore, Anti-Acrp30 mitigated the inhibitory effect of NaHS on CRS-induced oxidative stress as illustrated by the up-regulation of malondialdehyde (MDA) content and the down-regulation of superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity and glutathione (GSH) level in the hippocampus. Moreover, Anti-Acrp30 eliminated NaHS-induced the reduction of endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress-related proteins including binding immunoglobulin protein (BIP), C/EBP homologous protein (CHOP), and Cleaved Caspase-12 expressions in the hippocampus of rats-exposed to CRS. Taken together, these results indicated that adiponectin mediates the protection of H2S against CRS-induced cognitive impairment through ameliorating hippocampal damage.

ABSTRACT

Salmonellosis is a worldwide zoonotic disease that poses a serious threat to the reproduction of livestock and poultry and the health of young animals. Probiotics including Bacillus species, have received increasing attention as a substitute for antibiotics. In this study, chicks infected with Salmonella were fed feed supplemented with the BSH to observe the pathological changes in the liver, detect the number of viable bacteria in the liver and spleen, and record the death of the chicks. The results showed that BSH could reduce the pathological changes in the liver and the invasion of Salmonella into the liver and spleen of chicks. In addition, the survival rate of chicks in the BSH experimental group was 60%, while that in the infected control group was 26%, indicating that BSH had a protective effect on chicks infected with Salmonella. Finally, the fecal microflora of 9-day-old chicks was analyzed by 16S rRNA high-throughput sequencing. The results showed that Salmonella infection could cause intestinal flora changes, while BSH could alleviate this change. In addition, BSH also promoted the proliferation of Lactobacillus salivarius in the cecum of chick. This study emphasized that BSH has anti- Salmonella infection effects in chickens and can be used as a candidate microecological preparation strain.

ABSTRACT

Aim To establish three kinds of DNA damage models of mouse testicular spermatogonia cell line GC-1 cells and analyze their similarities and differences. Methods GC-1 cells were treated with UVB irradiation, D-galactose(D-Gal) or bleomycin (BLM), respectively. Then the expression and localization of 'Y-H2AX were detected by Western blot and immunofluorescence, the expression and localization of 8-OHdG were measured by immunofluorescence, and the expression levels of p-p53 and p21 were measured by Western blot. Results The expression of -y-H2AX in GC-1 cell reached to the peak 4 h after UVB irradiation and 6 h after D-Gal stimulation, whereas -y-H2AX expression gradually increased after BLM stimulation, and the higher the concentration of BLM,the shorter the time to reach the peak. The results of immunofluorescence showed that 8-OHdG expression was observed in the nucleus and cytoplasm of GC-1 cells after UVB irradiation and BLM stimulation, and the longer the culture time, the more the expression in the nucleus. In contrast, the expression of 8-OHdG was observed in the cytoplasm and reached the peak at 6 h in the D-Gal stimulated GC-1 cells. After UVB irradiation, the protein expression levels of p-p53 gradually increased, while p21 protein expression appeared later than that of p-p53; in the D-Gal stimulated GC-1 cells, the protein expression levels of p-p53 reached the peak at 6 h, and p21 protein expression reached the peak at 12 h; after low concentration BLM stimulation, the protein expression levels of p-p53 and p21 continuously increased, and after high concentration BLM stimulation, the protein expression levels of p-p53 and p21 reached its peak at 2 h, then decreased at 4 h. Conclusions Three kinds of DNA damage models of GC-1 cells are successfully established, and the DNA damage in GC-1 cells treated with D-Gal is mild, while the DNA damage in GC-1 cells treated by UVB irradiation and BLM stimulation is more severe.

ABSTRACT

Objective To investigate the role of vestibular organs on stress analgesia induced by rotation in mice. Methods Female mice were randomly divided into morphine group and rotation group. After 15 minutes of intraperitoneal injection of naloxone or normal saline, the hot plate latency of mice in each group was observed following morphine injection or rotation (250 r/min, 15 s on with 5 s off). After subcutaneous injecting morphine for 7 consecutive days, tolerance was formed and the hot plate latency in morphine-tolerant mice after rotation was observed. P-aminophenylarsonic acid was injected into the inner ear to damage the vestibular organs of the mice and the hot plate latency was observed in chemically labyrinthectomy mice. Results Compared with the normal saline group, the hot plate latency of mice in the naloxone group did not change significantly after rotation (P>0.05), and the hot plate latency decreased significantly after subcutaneous injection of morphine (P<0.05). The morphine-tolerant mice had no significant change in the hot plate latency after rotation compared with the normal saline group (P>0.05). After injection of p-aminophenylarsonic acid into the inner ear, the recovery time of the righting reflex in mice was significantly increased, and the swimming ability was significantly reduced (P<0.05), and the hot plate latency of mice with chemical labyrinthectomy was significantly shortened after rotation (P<0.05). Conclusion Chemical labyrinthectomy completely blocked the rotation-induced stress analgesia in mice. Vestibular organs play an important role in rotation-induced stress analgesia, and this stress analgesia may be mediated by a non-opioid system.

The H9N2 avian influenza virus (AIV) causes serious economic losses to the poultry industry every year. Vaccines that induce a mucosal immune response may be successful against influenza virus infection because its transmission occurs primarily in the mucosa. To develop novel and potent oral vaccines based on Lactobacillus plantarum (L. plantarum) to control the spread of AIV in poultry industry, in the present study, we constructed and expressed fusions of the influenza antigens NP and M2 with the Salmonella Typhimurium flagellinprotein FliC on the surface of L. plantarum. Oral immunization of chicks was performed, and serum antibodies, mucosal antibodies, and specific cellular immunity were detected. Immunizing chicks with avian influenza virus was evaluated. The results showed high levels of IgG in addition to high levels of secretory immunoglobulin A (sIgA) in chickens orally administered recombinant L. plantarum. In addition, the fusion may significantly increase the levels of NP- and M2-specific T cell-mediated immunity in the case of mucosal administration of NC8-pSIP409-pgsA'-NP-M2-FliC. Recombinant NC8-pSIP409-pgsA'-NP-M2-FliC mediated effectively protected chickens against influenza virus and reduced virus titers in the lung. Our study outcomes indicate that the expression of influenza NP-M2 and a mucosal adjuvant (FliC), by L. plantarum could generate a mucosal vaccine candidate for animals in the future to defend against AIVs.

ABSTRACT

Two rare strains of Proteus mirabilis with swarming migration deficiency were isolated from urine samples of two patients with urinary tract infections and were named as G121 and G137. Migration experiments showed that P. mirabilis HI4320 had typical migration on blood agar, while G121 and G137 had significantly weakened migration ability. Results of adhesion tests showed that the adhesion ability of G121 and G137 to the bladder epithelial cell line 5637 was significantly reduced. High-throughput sequencing and alignment analysis of the transcriptomes of the three P. mirabilis strains were conducted, with P. mirabilis HI4320 as the reference strain. Reverse transcription quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR) was used to verify differentially expressed genes. Results of transcriptome analysis and RT-qPCR showed that, compared to the HI4320 strain, genes related to flagellum and fimbria formation, dicarboxylate transport, and cystathionine and anthranilate metabolism were down-regulated in G121 and G137, while genes related to iron transport, molybdenum metabolism, and metalloprotease were up-regulated, suggesting that these genes may be involved in the migration ability and epithelial cell adhesion ability of P. mirabilis. These results provide important insight to the search for virulence genes and the screening of new antibacterial targets for P. mirabilis.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The role of surgery in breast cancer liver metastases (BCLM) remains elusive, and current application is limited. Our aim is to investigate whether hepatic resection (HR) of BCLM improves survival compared with non-hepatic resection (NHR) treatment. METHODS: Three hundred and eighty-four patients with BCLM from 2008 to 2018 were divided into two groups. Propensity score matching (PSM) analysis was used to compare the clinical outcomes. RESULTS: After PSM the mean overall survival (OS) and the 1, 3, and 5-year OS rates in HR group were 61.8 months, 92.6%, 54.7% and 54.7%, respectively; while for NHR group these values were 38.6 months, 79.2%, 45.6% and 21.9%, respectively (p < 0.007). Multivariate analysis indicated hormonal receptor status (p = 0.039) and hepatic resection (p = 0.032) were independent prognostic factors. CONCLUSION: Our study revealed that hepatectomy yields a survival benefit safely compared with medical treatments, especially for patients with positive hormonal receptors.

BACKGROUND: Chronic insomnia is a major public health problem, but there are limited effective therapies. Jiawei Suanzaoren Decoction (JW-SZRD) has been used as an alternative option for treating insomnia. This study aimed to investigate the long-term efficacy and safety of JW-SZRD in combination with lorazepam for chronic insomnia. METHODS: A total of 207 participants were analyzed in this study. The treatment group (TG) received JW-SZRD and lorazepam orally, and the control group (CG) received lorazepam alone. The Insomnia Severity Index (ISI), the Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS), the Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS), and the Somatic Self-rating Scale (SSS) were evaluated at baseline, weeks 4, 8, and 12. The MOS 36-item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36) was assessed at baseline and week 12. Adverse effects (AEs) were evaluated by the Treatment Emergent Symptom Scale (TESS). RESULTS: Both TG and CG showed obvious improvements in the sleep onset latency (SOL) (P=0.001 and 0.005) and total sleep time (TST) (P=0.001 and 0.005) and total sleep time (TST) (P=0.001 and 0.005) and total sleep time (TST) (P=0.001 and 0.005) and total sleep time (TST) (P=0.001 and 0.005) and total sleep time (TST) (P=0.001 and 0.005) and total sleep time (TST) (d = 1.28). CONCLUSION: The combination of JW-SZRD with lorazepam can significantly improve sleep quality with fewer AEs. It is an effective treatment and superior to lorazepam alone for chronic insomnia.

BACKGROUND: Controversy exists around the locoregional management of the primary tumor for breast cancer associated with synchronous ipsilateral supraclavicular lymph node metastasis (sISLM) due to the rarity of the disease and limited available data. This study aimed to compare outcomes of patients in the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database with sISLM who underwent surgical resection and radiation of the primary tumor with those who did not. METHODS: This population-based retrospective study included breast cancer patients with sISLM without distant metastases from 2004 to 2016 in the SEER database. In this study, patients had been stratified by operative management, and propensity score matching (PSM) had been successfully applied. RESULTS: A total of 1172 breast cancer patients with sISLM were included in the study: 863 (73.6%) of patients underwent the primary tumor resection, and 309 (26.4%) patients did not undergo surgery. The median survival time in the surgery group was longer compared to the nonsurgery group in the overall cohort and the PSM cohort. We concluded that the primary tumor resection was associated with improved survival. Subgroup analysis further demonstrated that local surgery was not inferior to radical surgery. CONCLUSION: For selected breast cancer patients with sISLM, surgery is a promising local intervention which may improve the survival.

ABSTRACT

To evaluate the efficiency of preventing pathogenic avian influenza by vaccination with recombinant Lactobacillus plantarum (L. plantarum) that expresses conserved antigens, the mucosal and systemic immune responses in animals vaccinated with recombinant L. plantarum NC8-409-1 (NC8-pSIP409-pgsA'-HA2) and NC8-409-2 (NC8-pSIP409-pgsA'-3M2e-HA2) were evaluated. Our results showed that recombinant L. plantarum NC8-409-1 and NC8-409-2 could substantially stimulate the specific IgA titer in the intestine and the specific IgG antibody titer in the serum. We also found that recombinant L. plantarum induced increases in the number of B220+ IgA+ cells in Peyer's patches (PPs), in lymphocyte proliferation and in the number of IFN-γ+ producing CD8+ T cells after immunization in mice. Most importantly, the mice that were vaccinated with recombinant L. plantarum NC8-409-2 and NC8-409-1 were to some extent protected against infection challenge with the H9N2 and H1N1 viruses. In particular, NC8-409-2 provided up to 80% protection against the H9N2 virus, and NC8-409-1 provided up to 60% protection. Lung tissue pathology was also reduced. Therefore, recombinant L. plantarum NC8-409-2 and NC8-409-1 may be candidate oral vaccines against bird flu.
