ABSTRACT

Fruit and vegetable processing can effectively maintain the quality and safety of fruit and vegetable-based products while extending the shelf life of products and saving transportation costs. Infrared (IR) technology has been widely used in many operating units of fruit and vegetable processing because of its versatility of uniform heating, high heat transfer efficiency, and minimized damage to fruit and vegetable tissues. Catalytic IR (CIR), compared to traditional electric IR, is powered by natural gas or liquefied gas, which can improve thermal efficiency while significantly saving energy. However, there is no comprehensive overview discussing and summarizing the utilization and application of the CIR technology in fruit and vegetable processing. Therefore, this review aims to highlight recent advances in the application of CIR technology in fruit and vegetable processing. Specifically, a comprehensive discussion of the physicochemical properties and underlying mechanisms of CIR is provided, and its applications as a single method or in combination with other technologies in fruit and vegetable processes, such as blanching, peeling, microbial population reduction, and drying, are also presented. Besides, the currently used laboratory and pilot-scale equipment of CIR has also been summarized.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Acute thyrotoxic myopathy (ATM) is a rare and potentially lethal complication of thyrotoxicosis. The typical clinical symptoms of ATM are characterized by bulbar paralysis. Reports of the successful treatment of ATM are sporadic due to its low incidence. However, no English literature has reported Chinese patients with ATM and neck pain. Here, we report for the first time a Chinese patient with ATM and neck pain who recovered through large doses of systemic glucocorticoids and one intrathyroidal steroid injection. CASE REPORT: A 23-year-old woman visited our hospital with a two-year history of progressive weakness of her bulbar muscles, hoarseness, cough when swallowing, dysphagia, and a one-month history of recurrent painful swelling of the thyroid gland. She was diagnosed with ATM, chronic thyrotoxic myopathy (CTM), and Graves' ophthalmopathy (GO) due to Graves' disease (GD). After she was treated with a combination of low-dose glucocorticoids, antithyroid drugs (ATDs), propranolol, and ultrasound-guided percutaneous intrathyroidal injection of glucocorticoids, her bulbar paralysis, proximal myopathy, and neck pain simultaneously improved without recurrence during follow-up. To our knowledge, this is the first case report of a patient with ATM, CTM, GD, GO and neck pain treated by administering a combination of low-dose glucocorticoids, one intrathyroidal steroid injection and antithyroid agents. CONCLUSIONS: Clinicians should consider ATM and intervene with aggressive glucocorticoid therapy, and this is the key to reversing the progression of ATM when a patient has bulbar paralysis and thyrotoxic symptoms. Our case report references the clinical diagnosis and treatment of such cases.

ABSTRACT

Introduction: Chronic thyrotoxic myopathy (CTM) is a common, easily neglected complication of hyperthyroidism. There are currently no standard diagnostic criteria for CTM, and the ultrasonic characteristics of CTM-affected skeletal muscle remain unclear. Herein, we aimed to evaluate hyperthyroid patients for CTM by ultrasound and identify ultrasonic muscle parameter cutoffs for CTM diagnosis. Materials and methods: Each participant underwent ultrasonography. The original (muscle thickness (MT), pennation angle (PA), and cross-sectional area (CSA)) and corrected (MT/height (HT), MT/body mass index (BMI), CSA/HT, and CSA/BMI) parameters of the vastus lateralis and vastus medialis (VM) were evaluated. The diagnostic effectiveness of ultrasound for predicting CTM was determined using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis. Our study included 203 participants: 67 CTM patients (18 males, 49 females), 67 non-CTM patients (28 males, 39 females) and 69 healthy controls (20 males, 49 females). Results: The CTM group had lower muscular ultrasonic and anthropometric parameters, higher thyroid hormone and thyroid-stimulating hormone receptor antibody (TRAb) levels, and a longer duration of hyperthyroidism than the non-CTM group (P < 0.05). The VM-PA, VM-CSA, VM-CSA/HT, and VM-CSA/BMI were lower in females than in males (P < 0.05). Free thyroxine (FT4) and TRAb both showed significant negative correlations with VM-MT, VM-MT/HT, VM-CSA, and VM-CSA/HT (P < 0.05). VM-MT/BMI and VM-CSA/HT, respectively, best predicted male and female CTM (AUC = 0.84, 0.85; cutoff ≤ 0.07, < 4.01). Conclusion: Ultrasound measurement of muscular parameters, especially in the VM, is a valid and feasible way of diagnosing and characterizing possible CTM in hyperthyroidism.

ABSTRACT

Apple waste (APW) is the residual product after apple processing, including apple peel, apple core, apple seed, and other components. A large quantity of APW produced is abandoned annually, leading to serious resource waste and environmental pollution. APW is rich in natural active compounds, such as pectin, polyphenols, fatty acids, and dietary fiber, which has a good use value. This paper reviewed the current research on recovering active components from APW. The traditional extraction methods (acid, alkali, physical, enzyme, etc.) and the novel extraction methods (SWE, UAE, MAE, RFAE, etc.) for the recovery of pectin, polyphenols, apple seed oil, apple seed protein, and dietary fiber from APW were systematically summarized. The basic principles, advantages, and disadvantages of different extraction methods were introduced. The requirements of different extraction methods on extraction conditions and the effects of different extraction methods on the yield, quality, and functional activity of extracted products were analyzed. The challenges and future study direction of APW extraction have prospected. This paper aims to provide a reference for other researchers interested in APW extraction, improve the utilization rate of APW and extend the value chain of the apple industry.

ABSTRACT

Ferroelectric domain walls (DWs) of perovskite oxide materials, which can be written and erased by an external electric field, offer the possibility to dynamically manipulate phonon scattering and thermal flux behavior. Different from previous ferroelectric materials, such as BaTiO3, PbTiO3, etc., with an immutable and low Curie temperature. The Curie temperature of perovskite oxide KTa1-xNbxO3 (KTN) crystal can be tuned by altering the Ta/Nb ratio. In this work, the ferroelectric KTa0.6Nb0.4O3 (KTN) single crystal is obtained by the Czochralski method. To understand the role of ferroelectric domains in thermal transport behavior, we perform a nonequilibrium molecular dynamics (NEMD) calculation on monodomain and 90° DWs of KTN at room temperature. The calculated thermal conductivity of monodomain KTN is 9.84 W/(m·k), consistent with experimental results of 8.96 W/(m·k), and distinctly decreased with the number of DWs indicating the outstanding performance of the thermal switch. We further evaluate the thermal boundary resistance (TBR) of KTN DWs. An interfacial thermal resistance value of 2.29 × 10-9 K·m2/W and a large thermal switch ratio of 4.76 was obtained for a single DW of KTN. Our study shows that the ferroelectric KTN can provide great potential for the application of thermal switch at room temperature and over a broad temperature range.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the value of ultrasound-based radiomics in the preoperative prediction of type I and type II epithelial ovarian cancer. METHODS: A total of 154 patients with epithelial ovarian cancer were enrolled retrospectively. There were 102 unilateral lesions and 52 bilateral lesions among a total of 206 lesions. The data for the 206 lesions were randomly divided into a training set (53 type I + 71 type II) and a test set (36 type I + 46 type II) by random sampling. ITK-SNAP software was used to manually outline the boundary of the tumor, that is, the region of interest, and 4976 features were extracted. The quantitative expression values of the radiomics features were normalized by the Z-score method, and the 7 features with the most differences were screened by using the Lasso regression tenfold cross-validation method. The radiomics model was established by logistic regression. The training set was used to construct the model, and the test set was used to evaluate the predictive efficiency of the model. On the basis of multifactor logistic regression analysis, combined with the radiomics score of each patient, a comprehensive prediction model was established, the nomogram was drawn, and the prediction effect was evaluated by analyzing the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC), calibration curve and decision curve. RESULTS: The AUCs of the training set and test set in the radiomics model and comprehensive model were 0.817 and 0.731 and 0.982 and 0.886, respectively. The calibration curve showed that the two models were in good agreement. The clinical decision curve showed that both methods had good clinical practicability. CONCLUSION: The radiomics model based on ultrasound images has a good predictive effect for the preoperative differential diagnosis of type I and type II epithelial ovarian cancer. The comprehensive model has higher prediction efficiency.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of ultrasonic-assisted thawing at different frequency modes (mono-, dual- and tri-frequency) on the thawing efficiency and quality evaluation of frozen beef. The thawing time, muscle quality, and microstructure of frozen beef were studied. The results showed that ultrasonic-assisted thawing effectively reduced the thawing time by 15.7-45.4% compared with flowing water thawing. For the quality properties of beef tissue, the ultrasound-assisted thawing with the single-frequency of 22 kHz and the dual-frequency of 22/33 kHz showed a higher water holding capacity; meanwhile, shear force values were also significantly decreased, and the tenderness of beef tissue was improved accordingly under such conditions. The microstructure analysis showed that the distribution of beef muscle fibers became closer and more regular. Therefore, ultrasound-assisted thawing treatments at 22 kHz single-frequency and 22/33 kHz dual-frequency have a high potential application value in the thawing industry of frozen beef.

ABSTRACT

Thermosonication as an alternative to hot water blanching of carrots, the effect of thermosonication on the carrot texture and cell structure required deep investigation. This study was conducted from the aspects of cell membrane, cell water, and cell wall pectin. Results showed that thermosonication at 60 °C significantly increased carrot tissue hardness by up to 10.3% compared with fresh. Rheological curves showed that the carrot tissues remained rigid after thermosonication. Cell membrane permeability was damaged to different extents during processing, inducing bound and immobilized water to migrate to free water and bring intracellular electrolytes to outflow. Thermosonication affected cell structure by altering the characteristics of pectin, including uronic acids and neutral sugar contents, degree of linearity and branching, and degree of methoxylation. The modified pectin can seize more divalent cations such as Ca2+ retained in the thermosonicated carrot cell wall, conducive to preserving the textural property of processed fruits and vegetables.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to investigate the effect of thermosonicaion (TS) with different frequency modes on the horseradish peroxidase (HRP) inactivation from the aspects of ultrasound field and enzyme structural changes. The relationships between the activity and structural modification were also evaluated. A thermal-only treatment was performed to estimate the action of ultrasound in TS treatment. Compared to mono-frequency, especially the 33 kHz, TS with dual- and tri-frequency modes showed an intensive inactivation impact on HRP. Exogenous hydroxyl radical test showed the hydroxyl radical played a vital role in HRP inactivation. Changes in hematin group, tertiary and secondary structures were also confirmed, and the inactivation process followed an all-or-none model. Morphological images indicated the aggregation and deformation of HRP molecules during TS treatment, and roughness values were changed accordingly. Pearson correlation analysis implied that the structural destruction on the spatial conformation of HRP was strongly related to its activity.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: This study is aimed at identifying stemness-related genes in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). METHODS: The RNA-seq data of PADC patients were downloaded from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) and Genotype-Tissue Expression (GTEx) databases. The mRNA expression-based stemness index (mRNAsi) and epigenetically regulated mRNAsi (EREG-mRNAsi) of PADC patients were evaluated. The mRNAsi-related gene sets in PADC were identified by weighted gene coexpression network analysis (WGCNA). The key genes were further analyzed using functional enrichment analysis. The Kaplan-Meier survival analysis and the Cox proportional hazards model were used to evaluate the prognostic value of the key genes. Prognostic hub genes were used to establish nomograms. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves, concordance index (C-index), and calibration curves were used to assess the discrimination and accuracy of the nomogram. Finally, these results were validated in the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database. RESULTS: A total of 36 key genes related to mRNAsi were identified by WGCNA. A prognostic gene signature compromising seven genes (TPX2, ZWINT, UBE2C, CCNB2, CDK1, BUB1, and BIRC5) was established to predict the overall survival (OS) of PADC patients. The Cox regression analysis revealed that the risk score was an independent prognostic factor for PADC. Patients were then divided into the high-risk and low-risk groups. The ROC curves, C-index, and calibration curves indicated good performance of the prognostic signature in the TCGA and GEO datasets. Moreover, the nomogram incorporating clinical parameters showed better sensitivity and specificity for predicting the OS of PADC patients. CONCLUSION: The stemness-related prognostic model successfully predicted the OS of PADC patients and could be used for the treatment of PADC.

ABSTRACT

The development of the Internet and social media has expanded the speed and scope of information dissemination, but not all widely disseminated information is true. Especially during the public health emergencies, the endogenous health information demand generated by the lack of scientific knowledge of health information among online users stimulates the dissemination of health information by mass media while providing opportunities for rumor mongers to publish and spread online rumors. Invalid scientific knowledge and rumors will have a serious negative impact and disrupt social order during epidemic outbreaks such as COVID-19. Therefore, it is extremely important to construct an effective online rumor reversal model. The purpose of this study is to build an online rumor reversal model to control the spread of online rumors and reduce their negative impact. From the perspective of internal and external factors, based on the SIR model, this study constructed a G-SCNDR online rumor reversal model by adopting scientific knowledge level theory and an external online rumor control strategy. In this study, the G-SCNDR model is simulated, and a sensitivity analysis of the important parameters of the model is performed. The reversal efficiency of the G-SCNDR model can be improved by properly adopting the isolation-conversion strategy as the external control approach to online rumors with improving the popularization rate of the level of users' scientific knowledge and accelerating the transformation efficiency of official nodes. This study can help provide a better understanding of the process of online rumor spreading and reversing, as well as offering ceritain guidance and countermeasures for online rumor control during public health emergencies.

BACKGROUND: Climate change exacerbates temperature-related mortality, but effects may vary by geographic characteristics. We hypothesize that higher greenness may mitigate temperature-related mortality, and that the effect may vary in different areas. OBJECTIVE: We examined how mortality among older adults in China was associated with temperature for 2000-2014, and how geolocation and residential greenness may modulate this association. METHODS: We used health data from the China Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS), and meteorological data from the Global Surface Summary of Day (GSOD) product by National Climate Data Center. We used a case-crossover study design with distributed nonlinear modeling to estimate mortality risks in relation to temperature, and stratified analysis by quartile of greenness. Greenness was estimated by Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) from remote-sensed imagery. In addition to the national analysis, we also assessed three provinces (Jiangsu, Guangdong, and Liaoning) to examine differences by climatic regions. RESULTS: Extreme temperatures had a significant association with higher mortality, with regional differences. Findings from the national analysis suggest that individuals in the lowest quartile of greenness exposure had a ratio of relative risks (RRR) of 1.38 (0.79, 2.42) for mortality risk on extreme hot days at the 95th percentile compared to those at the 50th percentile, compared to those in the highest quartile, which means those residing in the lowest quartile of greenness had a 38% higher RR than those residing in the highest quartile of greenness, where RR refers to the risk of mortality on days at the 95th percentile of temperature compared to days at the 50th percentile. The RRR for the highest to lowest quartiles of greenness for mortality risk on extreme cold days at the 5th percentile compared to the 50th percentile was 2.08 (0.12, 36.2). In Jiangsu and Guangdong provinces, both the heat effects and cold effects were the lowest in the highest greenness quartile, and the results in Liaoning province were not statistically significant, indicating different regional effects of greenness on modulating the temperature-mortality relationship. DISCUSSION: We elucidated one pathway through which greenness benefits health by decreasing impact from extreme high temperatures. The effects of greenness differed by climatic regions. Policymakers should consider vegetation in the context of climate change and health.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to explore the potential pathogenesis of juvenile dermatomyositis by bioinformatics analysis of gene chips, which would screen the hub genes, identify potential biomarkers, and reveal the development mechanism of juvenile dermatomyositis. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We retrieved juvenile dermatomyositis's original expression microarray data of message RNAs (mRNAs) and microRNAs (miRNAs) from NCBI's Gene Expression Omnibus database (GEO, http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/geo/); through the R package of limma in Bioconductor, we can screen the differentially expressed miRNAs and mRNAs, and then we further analyzed the predicted target genes by the methods such as Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway enrichment analysis and miRNA-mRNA regulatory network construction and protein-protein interaction (PPI) network using Cytoscape 3.6.1. RESULTS: Compared with normal juvenile skin tissues, 6 upregulated microRNAs and 5 downregulated microRNAs were identified from 166 downregulated microRNAs and 58 upregulated microRNAs in juvenile dermatomyositis tissues. The enrichment pathways of differentially expressed microRNAs include cell adhesion molecules (CAMs), autoimmune thyroid disease, Type I diabetes mellitus, antigen and presentation, viral myocardium, graft-versus-host disease, and Kaposi sarcoma-associated herpes virus infection. By screening of microRNA-messenger RNA regulatory network and construction of PPI network map, three target miRNAs were identified, namely, miR-193b, miR-199b-5p, and miR-665. CONCLUSION: We identified mir-193b, mir-199b-5p, and mir-6653 target miRNAs by exploring the miRNA-mRNA regulation network mechanism related to the pathogenesis of juvenile dermatomyositis, which will be of great significance for further study on the pathogenesis and targeted therapy of juvenile dermatomyositis.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the use of Contrast-enhanced Ultrasound (CEUS) in evaluating angiogenesis in a xenograft nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) model in nude mice and the evolution of CEUS parameters according to the growth of NPC. METHODS: Nude mice were divided into three groups according to experiments conducted at various times from tumor implantation (8 mice/group; group A: 4 weeks from implantation; group B:6 weeks from implantation; group C:8 weeks from implantation). CNE-2 cells were transplanted in 24 nude mice and CEUS evaluations of the tumors were performed at 4, 6 or 8 weeks from implantation. CEUS parametric perfusion images and pathological findings were recorded. R version 3.4.4 software was used to analyze the CEUS parameters and pathological findings. RESULTS: One-way anova analysis indicated statistically significant differences among the three groups with the parameters of peak intensity (PI) (p<0.001), area wash in (AWI) (p<0.001), area wash out (AWO) (p<0.001) and tumor volumes (p<0.001).Pearson correlation coefficient analysis indicated that microvessel density (MVD) was correlated with tumor volume (r = 0.644, p = 0.001), PI (r = 0.904, p<0.0001), AWI (r = 0.547, p = 0.008) and AWO (r = 0.744, P<0.0001). Tumor volume was correlated with MVD (r = 0.644, p = 0.001), PI (r = 0.625, p = 0.002), AWI (r = 0.528, p = 0.012) and AWO (r = 0.784, p<0.001). The percentage of necrosis in histological sections was correlated with the percentage of CEUS unperfused area (r = 0.446,p = 0.038). Spearman rank correlation coefficient analysis indicated that vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) was correlated with PI (r = 0.462, P = 0.032). Welch t test indicated PI, AWI and AWO parameters were significantly lower than that of kidneys (p<0.001, p = 0.009, p = 0.005). CONCLUSIONS: The CEUS parameters PI, AWI and AWO indirectly reflect the MVD and the tumor volume in our model of subcutaneous transplanted NPC in nude mice, providing precious information on angiogenesis and tumor growth. VEGF may play a role in promoting angiogenesis of NPC.
