ABSTRACT

Abstract We report six new occurrence records of the bush dog Speothos venaticus, a widely distributed South American carnivore that is threatened with extinction. These records are accompanied by notes on the places where the records were made, such as vegetation type, date and information about the protection of areas. The records, obtained over the last 17 years in Paraná state, southern Brazil, offer an improved understanding of the species geographic range and the threats it faces and can enable better assessments of the conservation status of the species in southern Brazil.

ABSTRACT

In developing countries such as Brazil, where canine rabies is still a considerable problem, samples from wildlife species are infrequently collected and submitted for screening for rabies. A collaborative study was established involving environmental biologists and veterinarians for rabies epidemiological research in a specific ecological area located at the Sao Paulo State, Brazil. The wild animals' brains are required to be collected without skull damage because the skull's measurements are important in the identification of the captured animal species. For this purpose, samples from bats and small mammals were collected using an aspiration method by inserting a plastic pipette into the brain through the magnum foramen. While there is a progressive increase in the use of the plastic pipette technique in various studies undertaken, it is also appreciated that this method could foster collaborative research between wildlife scientists and rabies epidemiologists thus improving rabies surveillance.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

The autors compare the interpretation of radiotomographic films and the results of pathological examination of total laryngectomy specimens in 60 cases without contrast and in 15 cases with contrast. They study the value of the interpretation of X-ray films according to the site in terms of height, size, shape, the extent of the carcinoma and possible involvement of the pre-epiglottic space, the thyroid cartilage and the base of the tongue. With the aim of determining the true value of radiotomographic examination in carcinoma of the larynx, comparative tables were drawn up between the radiological interpretation and findings on macroscopic examination of total laryngectomy operative specimens. Radiological examination included standard lateral films, AP tomograms and, more recently, contrast laryngography.

ABSTRACT

Ewing's sarcoma of the head and neck, particularly of the mandible, has a low incidence of occurrence (fifty-five cases in the literature). The present case report demonstrates well the clinical, diagnostic, and therapeutic features in a patient treated at the Head and Neck Service of the Fundação Antonio Prudente, São Paulo, Brazil. The etiologic, clinical, histopathologic, and radiologic features are discussed, with the conclusion that radiation is the best therapeutic procedure when associated with chemotherapy.
