ABSTRACT

Heterosigma akashiwo is a commonly found harmful microalgae, however, there are only few studies on its control using algicidal components particularly those identified from algicidal bacteria. In our previous study, ortho-tyrosine and urocanic acid identified from Bacillus sp. B1 showed a significantly high algicidal effect on H. akashiwo. The growth inhibition rates of H. akashiwo after 96 h of treatment with 300 µg/mL o-tyrosine and 500 µg/mL urocanic acid were 91.06% and 88.07%, respectively. Through non-destructive testing by Pulse Amplitude Modulation fluorometry and flow cytometer, the effects of o-tyrosine and urocanic acid on H. akashiwo PS II and physiological parameters (cell volume, mitochondrial membrane potential, and membrane permeability) were estimated. This study shows that o-tyrosine affected the photosynthesis system of H. akashiwo, decreased the mitochondrial membrane potential, and increased the membrane permeability of the algal cells. Treatment with urocanic acid decreased the mitochondrial membrane potential, resulting in the inhibition of algal cell growth and reproduction, but had little effect on membrane permeability and photosynthetic system. Our results may imply that when uridine degrades, surviving H. akashiwo cells may be reactivated. Therefore, o-tyrosine and urocanic acid have the potential to become new biological algicides, which can effectively control the growth of H. akashiwo.

ABSTRACT

Three-dimensional (3D) hybrid nanostructured arrays grown on a flexible substrate have recently attracted great attention owing to their potential application as supercapacitor electrodes in portable and wearable electronic devices. Here, we report an in situ conversion of Ni-Co active electrode materials for the fabrication of high-performance electrodes. Ni-Co carbonate hydroxide nanowire arrays on carbon cloth were initially synthesized via a hydrothermal method, and they were gradually converted to Ni-Co (oxy)hydroxide nanowire-supported nanoflake arrays after soaking in an alkaline solution. The evolution of the supercapacitor performance of the soaked electrode was investigated in detail. The areal capacitance increases from 281 mF cm-2 at 1 mA cm-2 to 3710 and 3900 mF cm-2 after soaking for 36 h and 48 h, respectively. More interestingly, the electrode also shows an increased capacitance with charge/discharge cycles due to the long-time soaking in KOH solution, suggesting novel cycling durability. The enhancement in capacitive performance should be related to the formation of a unique nanowire-supported nanoflake array architecture, which controls the agglomeration of nanoflakes, making them fully activated. As a result, the facile in situ fabrication of the hybrid architectural design in this study provides a new approach to fabricate high-performance Ni/Co based hydroxide nanostructure arrays for next-generation energy storage devices.

ABSTRACT

We tried to find an ideal therapeutic regimen for patients with advanced esophageal cancer. Totally 240 patients with advanced esophageal cancer were randomly divided into experimental group (endoscopic sequential treatment, 126 cases) and control group (traditional treatment, 114 cases) with a 2-year follow-up period. The experimental group was randomly divided into three subgroups: group A: local chemotherapeutic drug injection with ordinary metal stent implantation; group B: local chemotherapeutic drug injection with iodine-125 particle implantation; and group C: radiofrequency (RF) therapy with ordinary metal stent group. The control group was also randomly divided into three subgroups: group D: local chemotherapeutic drug injection group; group E: RF therapy group; and group F: common metal stent implantation group. The survival rate, survival quality, adverse reactions, and complications were compared among these groups. A significant improvement of curative effect was found in the experimental group. Group A and B had higher survival rate and survival quality, and lower esophagotracheal fistula incidence and metastasis rate, compared with group C. There was no significant difference in survival rate between group A and group B, while the quality of life was higher in group B than in group A. While patients in group B had lower esophagotracheal fistula incidence and metastasis rate comparing with group A. Local chemotherapeutic drug injection combined with iodine-125 particle stent might be an effective sequential treatment to improve the life quality of advanced esophageal cancer patients.
