ABSTRACT

In the last decade, the vision systems have improved their capabilities to capture 3D images in bad weather scenarios. Currently, there exist several techniques for image acquisition in foggy or rainy scenarios that use infrared (IR) sensors. Due to the reduced light scattering at the IR spectra it is possible to discriminate the objects in a scene compared with the images obtained in the visible spectrum. Therefore, in this work, we proposed 3D image generation in foggy conditions using the single-pixel imaging (SPI) active illumination approach in combination with the Time-of-Flight technique (ToF) at 1550 nm wavelength. For the generation of 3D images, we make use of space-filling projection with compressed sensing (CS-SRCNN) and depth information based on ToF. To evaluate the performance, the vision system included a designed test chamber to simulate different fog and background illumination environments and calculate the parameters related to image quality.

ABSTRACT

Lachryphagous males of Phortica variegata (Fallén, 1823) are gaining increasing attention in Europe, as they act as vectors of the nematode Thelazia callipaeda Railliet & Henry, 1910, causal agent of thelaziosis, an emergent zoonotic disease. Currently, there are no effective control strategies against the vector, and surveillance and monitoring rely on time-consuming and nonselective sampling methods. Our aim was to improve the knowledge about the population dynamics and the chemical ecology of the species. A total of 5,726 P. variegata flies (96.4% males and 3.6% females, mostly gravid) were collected in field experiments during June-September of 2020 in an oak forest in northern Spain. Our results indicate that 1) by means of sweep netting a significantly higher number of captures were found both around the collector´s body and in the air than at ground level; 2) a positive relationship was detected between the abundance of Phortica flies and temperature, with two significant peaks of abundance at 24 and 33°C; 3) the blend of red wine and cider vinegar was the most attractive bait; 4) yellow traps captured fewer flies compared to black and transparent traps; and 5) a significant reduction toward vinegar and wine was detected in presence of the phenolic monoterpenoid carvacrol. In addition, all the males (n = 690) analyzed by both molecular detection and dissection resulted negative for the presence of T. callipaeda larvae. Overall, these findings provide a better understanding of the vector in terms of monitoring and management strategies.

ABSTRACT

Since epidemiologic changes regarding bronchogenic carcinoma had been related and new endoscopic techniques are available, one of the objectives of this study is evaluate the changes in bronchoscopy indications in the Unity of Respiratory Endoscopy of the H.U. 12 de Octubre. On the other hand, since lung transplantation has been introduced in H.U. 12 de Octubre in 2008, another objective is evaluate the differences related to bronchoscopy indication between patients with lung transplantation and not. We have used the database from the Unity of Respiratory Endoscopy of the H.U. 12 de Octubre. We have compared patients from two different periods: 2003-2008 (Period 1) and 2013-2018 (Period 2). We have also evaluated the differences between lung transplantation and not during period 2. Along the last five years we have related the following changes: a larger requirement of diagnostic techniques (TBP, BAL), a main use of sedation and a larger number of patients under hospital admission. As a conclusion, the bronchoscopy has become more complex. Patients with lung transplantation have more necessity of urgent examination under hospital admission and a larger request of specific techniques such as transbronchial biopsy and bronchoalveolar lavage. Therefore, this patients had entailed changes in the complexity if the bronchoscopy techniques in the last five years (AU)

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Our objective was to assess whether the performance of EcoC only in those patients in which the caliper measurement of the PA on CT suggested the existence ofPAH, relevant influence on the risk of bleeding complications and delays CbxTb conducting. MATERIAL AND METHODS: It has been conducted prospective, case-control, of all patients who underwent CbxTb in our unit over a period of 20 months. Defining control group those patients who EcoC was done protocolised, before CbxTb, and cases all patients who EcoC was made only in cases where there were signs of PAH in CT. We analized the correlation in HP diagnosis signs between CT and EcoC data, risk of bleeding and delays in the procedure. RESULTS: We were performed 40 patients. In the control group include 16 patients, CTdetected no signs of HP in 12 (75%) cases, with a specificity of 85%, sensitivity of 71% and negative predictive value of 82%. In our cases group, we include 24 patients, and EcoC was only made before the procedure in 4 cases, 3 of them false positives. No differences in bleeding was found between control and cases groups (18.7% vs. 16.7%; p= 0.54) but for the delays in the procedure was lower in the cases group (62 days vs. 37; p= 0.03) .Conclusion. In our study with interstitial lung disease and CbxTb we conclude that EcoC was indicated only in the cases with PH findings on CT reducing the delays in the procedure without bleeding rate increase

ABSTRACT

Recent studies, both in laboratory and sea conditions, have demonstrated damage after sound exposure in the cephalopod statocyst sensory epithelium, which secretes endolymph protein. Here, the proteomic analysis of the endolymph was performed before and after sound exposure to assess the effects of exposure to low intensity, low frequency sounds on the statocyst endolymph of the Mediterranean common cuttlefish (Sepia officinalis), determining changes in the protein composition of the statocyst endolymph immediately and 24 h after sound exposure. Significant differences in protein expression were observed, especially 24 h after exposure. A total of 37 spots were significantly different in exposed specimens, 17 of which were mostly related to stress and cytoskeletal structure. Among the stress proteins eight spots corresponding to eight hemocyanin isoforms were under-expressed possible due to lower oxygen consumption. In addition, cytoskeletal proteins such as tubulin alpha chain and intermediate filament protein were also down-regulated after exposure. Thus, endolymph analysis in the context of acoustic stress allowed us to establish the effects at the proteome level and identify the proteins that are particularly sensitive to this type of trauma.

ABSTRACT

The coexistence of lung cancer and lung hydatid cyst is exceptional, however there were few cases describe in literature. We describe a clinical case with both entities in the same lobe treated with lung resection and a review of the literature. The radiological suspicion of both entities is essential but only surgery histological findings allows this partnership confirmation

ABSTRACT

In insects, the olfactory system displays a high degree of plasticity. In Spodoptera littoralis, pre-exposure of males to the sex pheromone has been shown to increase the sensitivity of the olfactory sensory neurons at peripheral level. In this study, we have investigated this sensitization effect by recording the electroantennographic responses of male antennae to the major sex pheromone component (Z,E)-9,11-tetradecadienyl acetate and to the minor components (Z,E)-9,12-tetradecadienyl acetate and (Z)-9-tetradecenyl acetate. Responses to the conjugated diene acetate at 1 and 10 µg and to the unconjugated ester at 10 µg at three different times (11, 22 and 33 min) after pre-exposure (T = 0 min) were significantly higher than those at T = 0, whereas no increase of sensitivity to the pheromone was elicited by any dose of the minor monoene acetate. In addition, pre-exposed antennae to sub-threshold amounts (0.1, 1 and 10 ng) of the major pheromone component also induced an increased response to the chemical at different times (5 and 15 min) after exposure. Our results revealed that pre-exposed isolated antennae display a short-term higher sensitivity at the peripheral level when compared to naive antennae. In addition, we provide evidence of a peripheral sensitization mediated not only by the major pheromone component, but also by the minor unconjugated diene acetate, and the induction of this sensitivity appears to be dependent on the pre-exposure dose and the time span between pre-exposure and subsequent recordings. Possible implications of the sensitization effect displayed by the minor component for a more effective discrimination of the pheromone bouquets of other closely related species are highlighted.

ABSTRACT

Characterization of river ecosystems must take into consideration both structural and functional aspects. For the latter, a convenient and simple approach for routine monitoring is based on the decomposition of organic matter measured in terms of breakdown of natural organic substrates like leaf litter, wood sticks. Here we extended the method to a synthetic organic material using polymer probes characterized by MALDI-TOF/MS. We first characterized several commercial available polymers, and finally selected polycaprolactonediol 1250 (PCP 1250), a polyester oligomer, as the most convenient for further studies. PCP 1250 was first tested at mesocosms scale under conditions simulating those of the river, with and without nutrient addition for up to 4weeks. Differences to the starting material measured in terms of changes in the relative ion peak intensities were clearly observed. Ions exhibited a different pattern evolution along time depending on their mass. Greatest changes were observed at longest exposure time and in the nutrient addition treatment. At shorter times, the effect of nutrients (addition or not) was indistinguishable. Finally, we performed an experiment in 11 tributaries of the Ebro River during 97days of exposure. Principal Component Analysis confirmed the different behavior of ions, which were clustered according to their mass. Exposed samples were clearly different to the standard starting material, but could not be well distinguished among each other. Polymer mass loss rates, as well as some environmental variables such as conductivity, temperature and flow were correlated with some peak intensities. Overall, the interpretation of field results in terms of environmental conditions remains elusive, due to the influence of multiple concurrent factors. Nevertheless, breakdown of synthetic polymers opens an interesting field of research, which can complement more traditional breakdown studies to assess river ecosystem functioning.

ABSTRACT

Butterflies and moths are subject to different evolutionary pressures that affect several aspects of their behaviour and physiology, particularly sexual communication. Butterflies are day-flying insects (excluding hedylids) whose partner-finding strategy is mainly based on visual cues and female butterflies having apparently lost the typical sex pheromone glands. Moths, in contrast, are mostly night-flyers and use female-released long-range pheromones for partner-finding. However, some moth families are exclusively day-flyers, and therefore subject to evolutionary pressures similar to those endured by butterflies. Among them, the Castniidae, also called 'butterfly-moths' or 'sun-moths', behave like butterflies and, thus, castniid females appear to have also lost their pheromone glands, an unparallel attribute in the world of moths. In this paper, we review the sexual communication strategy in day-flying Lepidoptera, mainly butterflies (superfamily Papilionoidea), Zygaenidae and Castniidae moths, and compare their mating behaviour with that of moth families of nocturnal habits, paying particular attention to the recently discovered butterfly-like partner-finding strategy of castniids and the fascinating facts and debates that led to its discovery.

ABSTRACT

For drugs such as anticancer agents every effort should be made to minimize inter-patient variability in drug exposure in order to maximize the benefit while maintaining an acceptable risk level of serious adverse effects. Anticancer drugs generally have a preferential route of elimination, either in urine or in bile and feces. In consequence, dose individualization to renal and liver function permits excessive toxicity to be avoided and expected therapeutic benefit to be achieved. However, less is known about the most appropriate starting doses of antineoplastic agents in these individuals. In this review, we discuss trials that have specifically assessed new targeted agents dosing strategies (mainly monoclonal antibodies and tyrosine kinase inhibitors) in the setting of overt biochemical renal and liver dysfunction and we proportionate recommendations and practical guidelines for dose individualization (AU)

ABSTRACT

Introduction: The fiberoptic bronchoscopy (FB) is a useful technique in the diagnosis of focal pulmonary nodules and masses. The profitability of the FB and transbronchial biopsy (TB) is variable and depends on different factors such as the operator's experience. The aim of this study was to determine if the diagnostic profitability of these techniques, in the diagnosis of malignant focal pulmonary lesions (FPL), changed with the incorporation of a new medical staff compared with previous data of our center. Material and methods: A FPL was defined as an intra ¿ parenchymatous pulmonary lesion that is well circumscribed and completely surrounded by healthy lung.We analyzed all the FBs between 02/2008 and 08/2009 in patients with a FPL with a definitive diagnosis of malignancy. 85 patients were included. Results: The diagnostic profitability of the TB was 0.55; it was higher when the FPL was > 2 cm (≤ 2 cm vs > 2 cm; 0.38 vs 0.62; p = 0.02) but no difference was found by site (central vs. peripheral; 0.67 vs 0.54; p = 0.16). The previous profitability of TB was 0.76 without differences by size (≤ 2cm vs > 2 cm; 0.72 vs 0,78; p = 0,48) or site (central vs peripheral; 0.83 vs 0.74; p = 0,39).Conclusion: We conclude that the operator's experience influences in the diagnostic profitability of the TB, in the malignant FPL (AU)

ABSTRACT

Cardiovascular risk scales, such as the Framingham index or Score, estimated overall vascular risk and facilitate appropriate therapeutic intervention for reducing morbidity and mortality of cardiovascular disease in certain populations but this estimate may not be adequate, which has diagnostic tests led to the use of direct assessment, which can detect the presence of atherosclerotic lesions in asymptomatic phase. One such technique is the test of ankle-brachial index (ABI): easy diagnostic method, objective and noninvasive peripheral arterial disease (PAD), and probably the easiest direct assessment of the atherosclerotic lesion. It is an inexpensive, accurate and reproducible that does not require specialized personnel with high diagnostic accuracy. Diabetes, snuff and age are the factors most closely associated with low ABI. The relevance of the ITB lies in its value as a marker independent predictor of cardiovascular mortality, allowing the identification of high risk patients in primary prevention. This simple examination should be part of the systematic evaluation of cardiovascular risk in primary care, especially in patients with diabetes, and identify, subjects with increased cardiovascular risk (AU)

ABSTRACT

Aggressive T-cell lymphomas represent a particularly poor-prognosis subgroup of lymphomas. This is especially true for patients with recurrent or refractory disease who typically have a limited response to salvage therapy and an extremely poor overall survival. There is thus a strong need to develop potentially active drugs for these malignancies. Pralatrexate is a novel antifolate designed to have high affinity for the reduced folate carrier type 1. Preclinical and clinical studies have demonstrated that pralatrexate has significant activity against T-cell lymphomas. The dose-limiting toxicity for pralatrexate is mucositis, which could be abrogated with folic acid and vitamin B12 supplementation. Pralatrexate is now being evaluated in phase II clinical trials for the treatment of peripheral T-cell lymphoma, and in a phase I/II trial in combination with gemcitabine for the treatment of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Because of the limited therapies available for aggressive T-cell lymphoma, pralatrexate could secure a niche for the treatment of this condition, provided on going clinical trials and future phase III trials confirm the efficacy of the drug (AU)

Introduction. We define focal pulmonary lesion(FPL) as an intra-parenchymatous pulmonary lesionthat is well circumscribed and completelysurrounded by healthy lung. It is considered that theprofitability of the fine needle aspiration puncture(FNAP) in FPL 2 cm is better than that of thefibrobronchoscopy (FBC).Objective. To analyze the diagnostic profitability ofthe FNAP in the malignant FPL and study if it variesaccording to site, size and histology.Material and methods. We analyzed all the FBCs ofour Unit between 01/2000 and 12/2001 in patientswith solitary FLP 6 cm with a definitive diagnosisof malignancy. The diagnostic profitability by size, site and histology was analyzed with Pearson’s χ2statistics.Results. 124 patients. Mean FBC per patient was1.3. A total of 101 cases (82%) were diagnosed withFBC, 15 by thoracotomy and 8 by FNAP. Globaldiagnostic profitability of the FBC was 0.82 and thetransbronchial biopsy 0.76. There are no diagnosticprofitability differences by size ( 2 cm vs > 2 cm)(0.81 vs 0.82 p = 0.96), site (peripheral vs central)(0.79 vs 0.85 p = 0.41) and histology (epidermoidvs adenocarcinoma) (0.89 vs 0.75 p = 0.21).Conclusion. Profitability of the FBC in malignantFPL in our hospital is elevated without differencesby size, site or histology. In our site, the initial diagnostic approach of the FLP is done with FBC (AU)

ABSTRACT

To evaluate a population’s potential selection bias in a study of protein expression in resected NSCLC and to perform an analysis of global and specific molecular expression according to histological type. Population and methods: An observational, cohort, concurrent study in all patients with NSCLC surgically treated in our hospital between October 1993 and September 1997. Tissue arrays were designed from samples of resected tissue. The study method used for the evaluation of protein expression was immunohistochemistry. Population was divided into groups: patients with a molecular study (population A) and the rest (population B). Bias analyses was performed using the Chi square test for qualitative variables and the student T test for quantitative variables; the Kaplan-Meier test was used to compare survival curves. The Chi square test was used to analyse expression dijferences in proteins depending on the histological type. Results: Of total 180 cases, 146 had enough material for molecular study (population A) and 34 did not (population B). There were no differences between both populations, with the exception that tumours in population B were smaller (3.3 cm vs 4.5 cm) (p= 0.04) and with a lower frequency of pneumonectomies (11.8% vs 31.6%) (p= 0.02). The epidermoid histological type is the most frequent (68%). Of the 32 proteins studied, 8 are more frequently expressed in epidermoid types (cyclin A. CDK6, RB, p63, survivin N, EGFR, mTORp, p53) and 3 in adenoearcinomas (survivin C, FAS ligand and Cdc6). Conclusions: Our sample is representative of the selected population with no initial selection bias large enough to compromise the results. In this study, 11I markers were expressed differently according to the histological type of the NSCLC (AU)

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: We define focal pulmonary lesion (FPL) as an intra-parenchymatous pulmonary lesion that is well circumscribed and completely surrounded by healthy lung. It is considered that the profitability of the fine needle aspiration puncture (FNAP) in FPL < or = 2 cm is better than that of the fibrobronchoscopy (FBC). OBJECTIVE: To analyze the diagnostic profitability of the FNAP in the malignant FPL and study if it varies according to site, size and histology. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We analyzed all the FBCs of our Unit between 01/2000 and 12/2001 in patients with solitary FLP < or = 6 cm with a definitive diagnosis of malignancy. The diagnostic profitability by size, site and histology was analyzed with Pearson's chi(2) statistics. RESULTS: 124 patients. Mean FBC per patient was 1.3. A total of 101 cases (82%) were diagnosed with FBC, 15 by thoracotomy and 8 by FNAP. Global diagnostic profitability of the FBC was 0.82 and the transbronchial biopsy 0.76. There are no diagnostic profitability differences by size (< or = 2 cm vs > 2 cm) (0.81 vs 0.82 p = 0.96), site (peripheral vs central) (0.79 vs 0.85 p = 0.41) and histology (epidermoid vs adenocarcinoma) (0.89 vs 0.75 p = 0.21). CONCLUSION: Profitability of the FBC in malignant FPL in our hospital is elevated without differences by size, site or histology. In our site, the initial diagnostic approach of the FLP is done with FBC.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To know the clinical-epidemiological characteristics of patients diagnosed of tuberculosis (TBC) in Pneumology outpatient clinic in the University Hospital 12 de Octubre during the last three years.Material and methods: Retrospective study of new cases of TBC disease in the outpatient pneumology clinic in our hospital between 01/2004 and 12/2006. The data were gathered from the diagnostic coding database of the consultation, thorough review of the clinical histories and registries of the nursing department. We elaborated a database that included demographic, clinical data related with the diagnosis and with the treatment. Results: A total of 90 new cases were diagnosed, 61.1% of whom were men, of TBC disease. Mean age was 38.6 years with a greater peak incidence between 20 and 40 years. A total of 38.9% of the cases were immigrants. Mean age on diagnosis of the immigrants was 31.5 years, significantly lower (p = 0.02) than that of the Spaniards (43.1 years). Some type of immunosuppression was found in 15.6% of the cases. The most frequent clinical presentation form was pulmonary with 65.6% and the most frequent diagnostic method was microbiological. Treatment regime used most was that of four drugs, with 2 months of rifamipicin (R), isoniacid (H), pyrazinamide (Z) and etambutol (E) and 4 months of HR, which was used in 61.1% of the cases. In 13 patients, some resistance to first line drugs was detected, the most frequent being to isoniazide (8 cases). The complications due to the treatment occurred in 13.3% and course was toward cure in 91%. Recording of new cases of TBC in our consultation during the years 2004, 2005 and 2006 reflected a greater number of new cases regarding the overall rates of the Regional Community of Madrid and regarding previous years in our consultation. Conclusion: A greater incidence of tuberculosis disease is observed in the outpatient clinic of the Hospital 12 de Octubre regarding the last record. This increase in incidence, given the elevated percentage of foreign population in TBC patients of our study (38.9%), may be due to the higher rates of immigration of the area 11 population (21.3%) in relationship with the general data of the regional community of Madrid (13.1%)

ABSTRACT

Vibrio anguillarum is one of the primary pathogens responsible for high levels of fish mortality in the aquaculture industry, and among gadoids O2a and b are the most common pathogenic serotypes. In this paper a variety of studies were performed to assess the optimal route by which to challenge haddock against this pathogen, and an optimal regime to vaccinate haddock. The most efficient method to challenge haddock with V. anguillarum in this study was immersion in a bath containing 10(7)cfu/ml, where 60% mortality was seen. Subsequent experiments showed that juvenile haddock could be protected against bacterial challenge with V. anguillarum, with a significant reduction in mortalities observed amongst the vaccination treatments when compared to the unvaccinated controls. However, as seen previously in cod studies, vaccination did not induce a specific antibody response.

ABSTRACT

Lung infarction is a frequent complication in about 10-15% of pulmonary embolism. Approximately 5-10% of lunginfarctions are secondarily cavitated. Chest pain and fever are the most frequent symptoms and about 30% of them have haemoptysis. Differential diagnosis based on radiologic findings would be established with pulmonary tuberculosis, lung abscess and septic embolism. We describe the clinical case of a patient with bilateral lung infarction secondarily Staphylococcus warnerii infection
