ABSTRACT

Optical light microscopy was used to examine 1,198 umbilical cords. Recorded were inflammatory changes in 3.5 per cent of all cases and aplasia of the umbilical artery in 1.3 per cent. The findings were compared to clinical parameters. Accumulated occurrence of meconium-stained or fetid amniotic fluid was one of the conspicuous findings. While foetal behaviours were quite inconspicuous during and immediately after parturition, inflammatory infiltration of the umbilical cord was recordable later on from 42 per cent of clinical infections.

ABSTRACT

Serum bilirubin levels at 5th day of life was compared between 100 mature newborns with oxytocin infusion to the mother during labour and 100 mature newborns without oxytocin. Newborns, whose mothers received more than 5 IU oxytocin had significant higher bilirubin values than the controll group without oxytocin and the cases with oxytocin administration under 5 U. Hyperbilirubinaemie was also present in babies after vacuum extraction and oxytocin infusion.
