ABSTRACT

Recent advancements in power electronic switches provide effective control and operational stability of power grid systems. Junction temperature is a crucial parameter of power-switching semiconductor devices, which needs monitoring to facilitate reliable operation and thermal control of power electronics circuits and ensure reliable performance. Over the years, various junction temperature measurement techniques have been developed, engaging both non-optical and optical-based methods, highlighting their advancements and challenges. This review focuses on several optical sensing-based junction temperature measuring techniques used for power-switching devices such as metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistors (MOSFETs) and insulated-gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs). A comprehensive summary of recent developments in infrared camera (IRC), thermal sensitive optical parameter (TSOP), and fiber Bragg grating (FBG) temperature sensing techniques is provided, shedding light on their merits and challenges while providing a few possible future solutions. In addition, calibration methods and remedies for obtaining accurate measurements are discussed, thus providing better insight and directions for future research.

ABSTRACT

One of the challenges for Mobile Network Operators (MNO) in 5G deployment is to ensure reliability in the various sections of the network as the new services and applications, for instance, video on demand, telemedicine, online learning, smart transportation and augmented reality require not only high bandwidth but also demand uninterrupted service. However, this reliability requires substantial investment. Therefore, MNO only deploys protection or backup resources in the network unless it is cost-effective. The study aims to present a reliable and low-cost protection scheme based on an Ultra-Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing Passive Optical Network (UDWDM PON) for the transport layer of the 5G network, i.e., for the fronthaul/backhaul section. We have evaluated the Capital Expenditure (CAPEX) cost of UDWDM PON with and without protection in a dense urban area. We also measure the figure of merit between the cost and reliability of the system and, subsequently, confirm that the proposed protection scheme can achieve system reliability up to four nines with very low additional CAPEX investment. Finally, the efficacy of the proposed protection scheme is also demonstrated through simulation experiments.

ABSTRACT

The performance of doped fiber amplifiers can be enhanced significantly with the help of multi-stage pumping technique provided that various critical parameters of pumps including their optical power and wavelength are optimized. We report the performance enhancement of a ytterbium doped fiber amplifier (YDFA) for a 1.02-1.08 µm spectral region with an optimized design based on a novel dual-stage in-band asymmetrical pumping scheme. By accurately adjusting the optical power and wavelength of pumps in both the stages, a record peak gain of around 62.5 dB and output power of 4.5 W are achieved for a signal wavelength of 1.0329 µm at an optimized length of Ytterbium-doped silica fiber and optimized doping concentration of Yb3+. Moreover, a minimum noise figure (NF) of 4 dB is observed for a signal wavelength of 1.0329 µm at the optimized parameters. Similarly, the effect of using high and low pump powers at the first and the second stage, respectively, on NF of the amplifier is also investigated at different values of signal powers. It is observed that the value of NF increases significantly by using high pump power at the first stage and low pump power at the second stage.

ABSTRACT

In this research, a photonic crystal fiber (PCF)-based sulfuric acid detector is proposed and investigated to identify the exact concentration of sulfuric acid in a mixture with water. In order to calculate the sensing and propagation characteristics, a finite element method (FEM) based on COMSOL Multiphysics software is employed. The extensive simulation results verified that the proposed optical detector could achieve an ultra-high sensitivity of around 97.8% at optimum structural and operating conditions. Furthermore, the proposed sensor exhibited negligible loss with suitable numerical aperture and single-mode propagation at fixed operating conditions. In addition, the circular air holes in the core and cladding reduce fabrication complexity and can be easily produced using the current technology. Therefore, we strongly believe that the proposed detector will soon find its use in numerous industrial applications.

ABSTRACT

Artificial intelligence (AI) in developing modern solutions for biomedical problems such as the prediction of human gait for human rehabilitation is gaining ground. An attempt was made to use plantar pressure information through fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors mounted on an in-sole, in tandem with a brain-computer interface (BCI) device to predict brain signals corresponding to sitting, standing and walking postures of a person. Posture classification was attained with an accuracy range between 87-93% from FBG and BCI signals using machine learning models such as K-nearest neighbor (KNN), logistic regression (LR), support vector machine (SVM), and naïve Bayes (NB). These models were used to identify electrodes responding to sitting, standing and walking activities of four users from a 16 channel BCI device. Six electrode positions based on the 10-20 system for electroencephalography (EEG) were identified as the most sensitive to plantar activities and found to be consistent with clinical investigations of the sensorimotor cortex during foot movement. A prediction of brain EEG corresponding to given FBG data with lowest mean square error (MSE) values (0.065-0.109) was made with the selection of a long-short term memory (LSTM) machine learning model when compared to the recurrent neural network (RNN) and gated recurrent unit (GRU) models.

ABSTRACT

A fiber-optic Fabry-Perot interferometer was constructed by splicing a short length of photonic crystal fiber to a standard single-mode fiber. The photonic crystal fiber functions as a Fabry-Perot cavity and serves as a direct sensing probe without any additional components. Its pressure and temperature responses in the range of 0-40 MPa and 25°C-700°C were experimentally studied. The proposed sensor is easy to fabricate, potentially low-cost, and compact in size, which makes it very attractive for high-pressure and high-temperature sensing applications.

ABSTRACT

We demonstrated a method for the measurement of signed frequency offset between optical source and delay interferometer (DI) for 10 Gb/s DPSK signals based on asynchronous delay-tap sampling technique with a chromatic dispersion (CD) offset. The demodulated DPSK signals show asymmetrical property and amplitude shoulder appears on the waveforms with frequency offset and a fixed CD offset together. The delay-tap sampling scatter plots also show the asymmetry related to the asymmetrical signal distortion. Our proposed method cannot only realize the measurement of the magnitude of frequency offset but also the polarity. The measurement range is from -2 GHz to +2 GHz and the sensitivity can reach ±100MHz. The simulation and experimental results are demonstrated and in good agreement.

ABSTRACT

We propose and demonstrate a stable, tunable and narrow linewidth C-band lanthanum co-doped bismuth based erbium doped fiber (EDF) ring laser with single longitudinal mode (SLM) operation. A free space thin film filter acts as a wavelength discriminative component selecting a few oscillating modes while a Lyot filter formed by a polarization maintaining (PM) fiber and a linear polarizer further discriminates and selects SLM efficiently. A power stability of < or = 0.05 dB, central wavelength variation of < or = 0.02 nm, a side-mode suppression ratio (SMSR) of at least > 43 dB, and a linewidth of about 1.3 kHz have been experimentally demonstrated.
