ABSTRACT
Density Functional Theory (DFT) is extensively used in theoretical and computational chemistry to study molecular and crystal properties across diverse fields, including quantum chemistry, materials physics, catalysis, biochemistry, and surface science. Despite advances in DFT hardware and software for optimized geometries, achieving consensus in molecular structure comparisons with experimental counterparts remains a challenge. This difficulty is exacerbated by the lack of automated bond length comparison tools, resulting in labor-intensive and error-prone manual processes. To address these challenges, we propose MolGC, a Molecular Geometry Comparator algorithm that automates the comparison of optimized geometries from different theoretical levels. MolGC calculates the mean absolute error (MAE) of bond lengths by integrating data from various DFT software. It provides interactive and customizable visualization of geometries, enabling users to explore different views for enhanced analysis. In addition, it saves MAE computations for further analysis and offers a comprehensive statistical summary of the results. MolGC effectively addresses complex graph labeling challenges, ensuring accurate identification and categorization of bonds in diverse chemical structures. It achieves a 98.91% average rate in correct bond label assignments on an antibiotics dataset, showcasing its effectiveness for comparing molecular bond lengths across geometries of varying complexity and size. Recently, there has been a significant increase in the use of deep learning techniques in the molecular sciences, which have shown high performance on datasets and the ability to generalize across data. However, no model has achieved perfect performance in solving all problems, and the pros and cons of each approach remain unclear to those new to the field. Therefore, this paper aims to review deep learning algorithms that have been applied to solve molecular challenges in computational chemistry. We proposed a comprehensive categorization that encompasses two primary approaches; conventional deep learning and geometric deep learning models. This classification takes into account the distinct techniques employed by the algorithms within each approach. We present an up-to-date analysis of these algorithms, emphasizing their key features and open issues. This includes details of input descriptors, datasets used, open-source code availability, task solutions, and actual research applications, focusing on general applications rather than specific ones such as drug discovery. Furthermore, our report discusses trends and future directions in molecular algorithm design, including the input descriptors used for each deep learning model, GPU usage, training and forward processing time, model parameters, the most commonly used datasets, libraries, and optimization schemes. This information aids in identifying the most suitable algorithms for a given task. It also serves as a reference for the datasets and input data frequently used for each algorithm technique. In addition, it provides insights into the benefits and open issues of each technique, and supports the development of novel computational chemistry systems.

ABSTRACT Meiofauna is a group of heterotrophic organisms smaller than macroinvertebrates but larger than microfauna and characterized by groups such as testate amoebae, ciliates, and nematodes. They are a link between bacteria and resources and macroinvertebrates. However, tropical meiofauna is poorly studied; thus, our goal was to characterize meiofaunal community composition and abundance and assess potential environmental variables controlling these community dynamics. Monthly samplings of meiofauna were conducted for eight months in Quebrada Prieta, El Yunque National Forest, Puerto Rico. Sampling was made in 12 pools, and data on discharge, sediment characteristics, and biotic variables were also collected. A total of 62 meiofaunal morphospecies were identified, with nematodes dominating the community, followed by testate amoebae. Bacterivores and detritivores taxa dominated the community. Meiofaunal abundance was negatively related to discharge and positively to the percentage of coarse sand, nitrate, and macroinvertebrate abundance. The composition ofmeiofauna in Quebrada Prieta is like the composition reported for temperate streams, at least in major meiofaunal groups present. However, the community in Quebrada Prieta was dominated by testate amoebae. In contrast, temperate streams are often dominated by rotifers and nematodes. Both abiotic and biotic variables are important for meiofaunal communities in the headwater streams in Puerto Rico.
RESUMEN La meiofauna es un grupo de organismos heterotróficos de menor tamaño que los macroinvertebrados, pero mayor que la microfauna que incluye grupos tales como amebas testadas, ciliados y nemátodos. Son un enlace entre las bacterias y los recursos y los macroinvertebrados. Sin embargo, la meiofauna en el trópico ha sido pobremente estudiada; por lo tanto, nuestra meta fue caracterizar la comunidad en términos de su composición y abundancia, así como evaluar potenciales variables ambientales que controlen estas dinámicas comunitarias. Se condujeron muestreos mensuales de meiofauna por un periodo de ocho meses en la Quebrada Prieta, Bosque Nacional El Yunque, Puerto Rico. Los muestreos se realizaron en 12 pozas, y la descarga, las características del sedimento y las variables bióticas se registraron simultáneamente. Se identificaron en total 62 morfoespecies de meiofauna, siendo los nemátodos los más abundantes, seguidos de las amebas testadas. Los grupos bacterívoros y detritívoros dominaron la comunidad. La abundancia de la meiofauna se relacionó negativamente con la descarga y positivamente con el porcentaje de arena gruesa, el nitrato y la abundancia de macroinvertebrados. La composición de la meiofauna en la Quebrada Prieta es similar la reportada para ríos templados, al menos en términos de los grupos de meiofauna presentes. Sin embargo, la comunidad en la Quebrada Prieta estuvo dominada por las amebas testadas. En comparación, los ríos templados son frecuentemente dominados por rotíferos y nematodos. Tanto las variables abióticas como la bióticas son importantes para la comunidad de la meiofauna en las cabeceras del río en Puerto Rico.

Background: Land use is a major factor determining stream water physicochemistry. However, most streams move from one land use type to another as they drain their watersheds. Here, we studied three land use scenarios in a tropical cloud forest zone in Mexico. We addressed three main goals, to: (1) assess how land use scenarios generate different patterns in stream physicochemical characteristics; (2) explore how seasonality (i.e., dry, dry-to-wet transition, and wet seasons) might result in changes to those patterns over the year; and (3) explore whether physicochemical patterns in different scenarios resulted in effects on biotic components (e.g., algal biomass). Methods: We studied Tropical Mountain Cloud Forest streams in La Antigua watershed, Mexico. Streams drained different three scenarios, streams with (1) an upstream section draining forest followed by a pasture section (F-P), (2) an upstream section in pasture followed by a forest section (P-F), and (3) an upstream forest section followed by coffee plantation (F-C). Physicochemistry was determined at the upstream and downstream sections, and at the boundary between land uses. Measurements were seasonal, including temperature, dissolved oxygen, conductivity, and pH. Water was analyzed for suspended solids, alkalinity, silica, chloride, sulfate, magnesium, sodium, and potassium. Nutrients included ammonium, nitrate, and phosphorus. We measured benthic and suspended organic matter and chlorophyll. Results: Streams presented strong seasonality, with the highest discharge and suspended solids during the wet season. Scenarios and streams within each scenario had distinct physicochemical signatures. All three streams within each scenario clustered together in ordination space and remained close to each other during all seasons. There were significant scenario-season interactions on conductivity (F = 9.5, P < 0.001), discharge (F = 56.7, P < 0.001), pH (F = 4.5, P = 0.011), Cl- (F = 12.2, P < 0.001), SO42- (F = 8.8, P < 0.001) and NH4+ (F = 5.4, P = 0.005). Patterns within individual scenarios were associated with stream identity instead of land use. Both P-F and F-C scenarios had significantly different physicochemical patterns from those in F-P in all seasons (Procrustes analysis, m12 = 0.05-0.25; R = 0.86-0.97; P < 0.05). Chlorophyll was significantly different among scenarios and seasons (F = 5.36, P = 0.015, F = 3.81, P = 0.42, respectively). Concentrations were related to physicochemical variables more strongly during the transition season. Conclusion: Overall, land use scenarios resulted in distinctive water physicochemical signatures highlighting the complex effects that anthropogenic activities have on tropical cloud forest streams. Studies assessing the effect of land use on tropical streams will benefit from assessing scenarios, rather than focusing on individual land use types. We also found evidence of the importance that forest fragments play in maintaining or restoring stream water physicochemistry.

We report a case of Dirofilaria immitis nematode infection in a dog imported from Venezuela that had been living for 2 years in Santiago, Chile, where this parasite had not been reported before. Our findings warrant surveillance for all dogs imported to Chile, given that suitable conditions exist for establishing this parasite.

OBJECTIVE: Several bariatric surgeries have been related to the T2DM improvement in obese patients. Despite the different mechanism invoked for this improvement, many evidences showed that the pancreas cellularity is conditioned for the homeostatic physiological changes after these surgeries. Many authors reported the changes in beta-cell mass after some surgeries in healthy rats. We purpose to analyze the changes in ß-cell cellularity and ß-cell-mass after a severe malabsorptive surgical method. Thus, we studied several parameters of the islet morphometric composition after a massive jejunal resection. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We employed Goto-Kakizaki diabetic non-obese rats, which underwent the 50% resection of middle portion of the jejunum versus a control group. After 3 months, rats were sacrificed and pancreas was immunohistochemicaly studied. RESULTS: The ß-cell mass was analyzed and several parameters about the endocrine islet size distribution were studied. We report an increase of ß-cell mass in massive resection surgical group versus controls. The islet distribution was significant different between both groups. Endocrine islets of surgical group were bigger with a different cellular distribution. CONCLUSION: According to the enteroendocrine changes related to surgeries in jejunum, as in other gastrointestinal portions, the cellularity of islets changes as an adaptive process to glycemic demands.
OBJETIVO: Varias técnicas quirúrgicas bariátricas han sido relacionadas con el mejoramiento de la T2DM en pacientes obesos. Se han invocado distintos mecanismos de porqué se da este mejoramiento y muchas evidencias apuntan a que la celularidad del páncreas cambia por las condiciones fisiológicas tras estas cirugías. Se han publicado cambios en la celularidad beta en ratas sanas sometidas a estos procesos. Y nos proponemos observar dichos cambios en ratas diabéticas tras una resección jejunal masiva. Estudiamos varios parámetros sobre la masa beta y la morfometría de los islotes, que indiquen los procesos celulares que han tenido lugar. MATERIAL Y METODO: Empleamos Goto-Kakizaki, un modelo de rata diabética no obesa, a la que se sometió a una resección del 50%de la poción media del yeyuno. Tras tres meses de supervivencia, las ratas se estudiaron los páncreas mediante inmunocitoquímica. RESULTADOS: Mostramos un incremento de la masa beta en las ratas resecadas frente a los controles. La distribución de islotes fue significativamente distinta entre los grupos, donde los islotes eran mayores en las ratas diabéticas. CONCLUSIÓN: Los cambios glucémicos tras las resecciones masivas yeyunales cambian la celularidad del páncreas como una muestra de la capacidad adaptativa del mismo a las modificaciones.

Low-cost substrates are an exciting alternative for bioprocesses; however, their complexity can affect microorganism metabolism with non-desirable outcomes. This work evaluated banana peel extract (BPE) as a growth medium compared to commercial Yeast-Malt (YM) broth in the native and non-conventional yeast Rhodotorula mucilaginosa UANL-001L. The production of carotenoids, fatty acids, and exopolysaccharides (EPS) was also analyzed. Biomass concentration (3.9 g/L) and growth rate (0.069 g/h) of Rhodotorula mucilaginosa UANL-001L were obtained at 200 g/L of BPE. Yields per gram of dry biomass for carotenoids (317 µg/g) and fatty acids (0.55 g/g) showed the best results in 150 g/L of BPE, while 298 µg/g and 0.46 mg/g, respectively, were obtained in the YM broth. The highest yield of EPS was observed in 50 g/L of BPE, a two-fold increase (160.1 mg/g) compared to the YM broth (76.3 mg/g). The fatty acid characterization showed that 100 g/L of BPE produced 400% more unsaturated compounds (e.g., oleic and ricinoleic acid) than the YM broth. Altogether, these results indicate that BPE is a suitable medium for producing high-value products with potential industrial applications.

Scene analysis in video sequences is a complex task for a computer vision system. Several schemes have been addressed in this analysis, such as deep learning networks or traditional image processing methods. However, these methods require thorough training or manual adjustment of parameters to achieve accurate results. Therefore, it is necessary to develop novel methods to analyze the scenario information in video sequences. For this reason, this paper proposes a method for object segmentation in video sequences inspired by the structural layers of the visual cortex. The method is called Neuro-Inspired Object Segmentation, SegNI. SegNI has a hierarchical architecture that analyzes object features such as edges, color, and motion to generate regions that represent the objects in the scenario. The results obtained with the Video Segmentation Benchmark VSB100 dataset demonstrate that SegNI can adapt automatically to videos with scenarios that have different nature, composition, and different types of objects. Also, SegNI adapts its processing to new scenario conditions without training, which is a significant advantage over deep learning networks.

RESUMEN Introducción: en los últimos años se ha reportado un incremento en la prevalencia de obesidad infantil, siendo este un factor de riesgo para enfermedades crónico-degenerativas como la Enfermedad Renal Crónica; por ende, se requieren de biomarcadores endógenos para detectar las alteraciones en el filtrado glomerular, siendo la Cistatina C uno de ellos. Objetivo: Identificar la frecuencia de Cistatina C elevada en pacientes con sobrepeso y Obesidad del noroeste de México. Material y Métodos: se estudió un grupo de infantes de 6 a 12 años, a los cuales según antropometría se clasificó en normopeso, sobrepeso u obesidad. Se obtuvo la somatometria y los niveles de Cistatina C de cada uno de ellos para el cálculo del filtrado glomerular y clasificar la función renal y se buscó asociación entre estas dos condiciones mediante prueba de chi cuadrado. Resultados: de un grupo de 80 pacientes el 51.3% presentó sobrepeso/obesidad; de estos en el 46.3% se reportaron niveles altos de Cistatina C, de acuerdo con el rango de referencia propuesto por Filler 2003. La media para Tasa de Filtración Glomerular (TFG) en el grupo con sobrepeso/obesidad fue de 103.1 ml/min/1.73 m2, comparada con el grupo normopeso de 121.2 ml/min/1.73 m2. La frecuencia de niveles altos de Cistatina C en población con sobrepeso/obesidad fue de 62.9% comparado con un 26.6% en normopeso. Conclusiones: Los Niños de 6 a 12 años con exceso de peso presentan mayor frecuencia de nivel elevado de Cistatina C.
ABSTRACT Introduction: in recent years an increase has been reported in the prevalence of childhood obesity, which is a risk factor for chronic degenerative diseases such as Chronic Kidney Disease; therefore, endogenous biomarkers are needed to detect alterations in glomerular filtration, Cystatin C being one of them. Objective: To identify the frequency of elevated Cystatin C in overweight and obese patients in northwestern Mexico. Materials and Methods: a group of infants aged 6 to 12 years was studied, who according to anthropometry were classified as normal weight, overweight or obesity. Somatometry and Cystatin C levels were obtained from each of them to calculate glomerular filtration rate and classify renal function, and an association between these two conditions was sought using the chi-square test. Results: of a group of 80 patients, 51.3% were overweight / obese; Of these, 46.3% had high levels of Cystatin C, according to the reference range proposed by Filler 2003. The mean Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR) in the overweight / obese group was 103.1 ml / min / 1.73 m2, compared to the normal weight group of 121.2 ml / min / 1.73 m2. The frequency of high levels of Cystatin C in the overweight / obese population was 62.9% compared to 26.6% in normal weight. Conclusions: Children from 6 to 12 years of age with excess weight have a higher frequency of high levels of Cystatin C.
ABSTRACT
The species Chironomus sp. "Florida" has several qualities that make it a potential aquatic laboratory model to be used in Puerto Rico. Its use as such, however, requires a rearing protocol and life cycle description not previously reported. The present study addresses this lack of information by first describing a rearing method obtained through three years of observations. Next we describe and discuss the life cycle and the effects of temperature and feeding on development. The species has a short life cycle (typically 11 days) and larval stages easily identified using body measurements. Temperature affects the duration of the life cycle, with warm temperatures producing faster development than cold temperatures. The effects of different food concentrations vary: in large water volumes, concentrations of 2 mg/larva/day produce faster developmental times, but at low water volumes, small food concentrations of 0.5 mg/larva/day produce faster developmental times. The rearing protocol and life cycle parameters presented in this study are intended to promote the use of this species as a laboratory model. The fast development of Chironomus sp. "Florida" makes it ideal for toxicological studies.

BACKGROUND: Conservation of tropical freshwater fauna requires a solid understanding of species biodiversity patterns. We provide an up to date annotated list of Odonata of Puerto Rico, which is based on current reports. The list is complemented with notes on the geographic and altitudinal distribution of this order on the island. We also compare current composition relative to early reports conducted when Puerto Rico was mostly an agricultural region. METHODS: We surveyed adult Odonata all over Puerto Rico with the aid of undergraduate students. Students were trained on capturing, preserving, and data basing specimens. All material was centralized, identified by the lead author, and deposited in the Zoology Museum at the University of Puerto Rico (MZUPR), Río Piedras campus. Surveys were complemented with focal collections by the authors and a literature review of published records for Puerto Rico and the Caribbean. We requested records from specialists to obtain the most complete list of species for the island. RESULTS: An annotated list of Odonata from Puerto Rico is presented, reporting 49 species distributed in two suborders and four families. We provide information on species distribution among municipalities and elevations around Puerto Rico. A historic list of species was developed for the 1930s-1940s, when agriculture covered most of Puerto Rico, based on literature and museum specimens. Both current and historic records are similar and suggest that the Odonata fauna is dominated by generalist species and has changed little since the agricultural period. Our list provides a point of reference to understand biodiversity patterns in Puerto Rico and the Caribbean and for assessing the effects of land use change on aquatic insect diversity.

BACKGROUND: Hydrological impacts on aquatic biota have been assessed in numerous empirical studies. Aquatic insects are severely affected by population declines and consequent diversity loss. However, many uncertainties remain regarding the effects of hydrology on insect production and the consequences of energy transfer to the terrestrial ecosystem. Likewise, sublethal effects on insect morphology remain poorly quantified in highly variable environments. Here, we characterized monthly fluctuation in benthic and emerged biomass of Ephemeroptera in a tropical lowland stream. We quantified the proportion of mayfly production that emerges into the riparian forest. We also examined the potential morphological changes in Farrodes caribbianus (the most abundant mayfly in our samples) due to environmental stress. METHODS: We collected mayflies (nymphs and adults) in a first-order stream in Costa Rica. We compared benthic and adult biomass from two years' worth of samples, collected with a core sampler (0.006 m2) and a 2 m2-emergence trap. The relationship between emergence and annual secondary production (E/P) was used to estimate the Ephemeroptera production that emerged as adults. A model selection approach was used to determine the relationship between environmental variables that were collected monthly and the emergent biomass. To determine potential departures from perfect bilateral symmetry, we evaluated the symmetry of two morphological traits (forceps and forewing) of F. caribbianus adults. We used Spearman's rank correlation coefficients (ρ) to examine potential changes in adult body length as a possible response to environmental stress. RESULTS: Benthic biomass was variable, with peaks throughout the study period. However, peaks in benthic biomass did not lead to increases in mayfly emergence, which remained stable over time. Relatively constant mayfly emergence suggests that they were aseasonal in tropical lowland streams. Our E/P estimate indicated that approximately 39% and 20% (for 2002 and 2003, respectively) of the nymph production emerged as adults. Our estimated proportion of mayfly production transferred to terrestrial ecosystems was high relative to reports from temperate regions. We observed a strong negative response of F. caribbianus body length to increased hydrology (Spearman: ρ = -0.51, p < 0.001), while slight departures from perfect symmetry were observed in all traits. CONCLUSION: Our two years study demonstrates that there was large temporal variability in mayfly biomass that was unrelated to hydrological fluctuations, but potentially related to trophic interactions (e.g., fish predation). Body length was a good indicator of environmental stress, which could have severe associated costs for mayfly fitness in ecosystems with high temporal variation. Our results highlight the complex ecological and evolutionary dynamics of tropical aquatic insects, and the intricate connection between aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems.

o Introduction: Freshwater research in Latin America has been increasing in recent years, with a large participation of scientists based on local institutions. However, researchers in the region are facing diverse challenges, and we lack a regional overview of the status of freshwater research. Objective: To address this, we surveyed researchers in the region to assess the current activity and challenges faced by the scientific community. We were interested in understanding (1) the type of research currently taking place in the region, (2) the major research gaps, as viewed by local researchers, and (3) the main limitations or obstacles slowing the development of freshwater science in the region. Methods: We prepared a questionnaire with 26 questions regarding the background of participants, their ongoing research priorities, the products generated from their research, and the major limitations they are facing as researchers. Results: We obtained 105 answers from researchers in 19 Latin American countries. Some of the important trends identified included: (1) a focus on stream ecosystems under agricultural and natural forest; (2) emphasis on biodiversity assessment and species inventories; (3) limited ecological research, mostly centered on litter decomposition and food web studies; and (4) communicating research in the form of peer-reviewed papers and reports in gray literature. Major limitations to the scientific activity included: (1) language, with a majority of respondents considering their handling of English a handicap; (2) limited access to research equipment; (3) lack of tools, such as taxonomic keys; and (4) limited research funding. Research needs and priorities resulted in three major areas in need of attention: (1) developing taxonomy and systematics; (2) improving our current understanding of ecology and natural history; and (3) understanding species distributions and biodiversity patterns. Conclusions: Latin America has an active community of scientists. There is a need to diversify research topics, without abandoning traditional research areas (e.g., taxonomy, species distribution). We advocate for more collaboration among scientists with similar research goals, regardless of their affiliation. Improving communication and collaboration among universities and countries within Latin America will certainly facilitate overcoming obstacles and will help shaping a brighter future for freshwater research, and sciences in general, in the region.
o Introducción: las investigaciones en ecosistemas de agua dulce en América Latina han aumentado en los últimos años, con gran participación de científicos establecidos en instituciones locales. Los investigadores en la región se enfrentan a una variedad de desafíos y carecemos de una descripción regional del estado de la investigación en agua dulce. Objetivo: para abordar esto, encuestamos a investigadores de la región para evaluar las líneas de investigación y los desafíos que enfrenta la comunidad científica. Estábamos interesados en comprender (1) el tipo de investigación que se está llevando a cabo actualmente en la región, (2) las principales brechas de investigación, según lo visto por los investigadores locales, y (3) las principales limitaciones u obstáculos que retrasan el desarrollo de la ciencia del agua dulce en la región. Métodos: preparamos un cuestionario con 26 preguntas sobre los antecedentes de los encuestados, sus prioridades actuales de investigación, los productos generados a partir de su investigación, y las principales limitaciones que enfrentan como investigadores. Resultados: obtuvimos 105 respuestas de investigadores en 19 países latinoamericanos. Algunas de las tendencias más importantes incluyeron: (1) un enfoque en ecosistemas fluviales, principalmente bajo los usos de tierra agrícola y de bosque; (2) énfasis en la evaluación de la biodiversidad y los inventarios de especies; (3) la limitada investigación ecológica está centrada en la descomposición de hojarasca y los estudios de la red alimentaria; y (4) la comunicación de la investigación se da a través de artículos científicos revisados por pares e informes técnicos en literatura gris. Las principales limitaciones de la actividad científica incluyen: (1) lenguaje, con la mayoría de los encuestados que consideran que su manejo del inglés es una desventaja; (2) acceso limitado a equipos de investigación; (3) falta de herramientas, tales como claves taxonómicas; y (4) financiamiento de investigación limitado. Las necesidades y prioridades de investigación dieron como resultado tres áreas principales que requieren atención: (1) desarrollar la taxonomía y la sistemática; (2) mejorar nuestra comprensión actual de la ecología y la historia natural; y (3) comprensión de la distribución de especies y patrones de biodiversidad. Conclusiones: América Latina tiene una comunidad activa de científicos. Identificamos la necesidad de diversificar los temas de investigación, sin abandonar áreas tradicionales (e.g., taxonomía, distribución de especies). Abogamos por una mayor colaboración entre los científicos con los objetivos de investigación similares, independientemente de su afiliación. Mejorar la comunicación y la colaboración entre universidades y países de América Latina ciertamente facilitará la superación de obstáculos y ayudará a forjar un futuro más prometedor para la investigación del agua dulce y las ciencias en general en la región.

Introduction: Latin America is a highly urbanized region, with most of its population living in cities and urban centers. While information about urban streams in Latin America is rather limited, streams are expected to experience similar environmental impacts and conservation issues as urban streams in parts of the globe, including habitat loss, channelization, sewage discharge, trash, and loss of riparian habitats. Objective: We surveyed a network of researchers from approximately 80% of the countries in Latin America to obtain information on the condition, state of knowledge, and threats to urban streams in the region. Methods: Most participants were reached via the Macrolatinos@ network (www.macrolatinos.net). Results: We obtained 104 responses from researchers in 18 of the 23 Latin American countries. Most urban streams are impacted or degraded, and inputs of contaminants and wastewater discharges were considered major drivers of stream degradation. Most respondents indicated that stream channelization is common, with some streams completely channelized or buried. Sewage and rainfall runoff management were identified as a major factor degrading streams, with most respondents suggesting that streams are a primary destination for wastewater discharge, much of which is untreated. Major limitations to urban stream conservation in Latin America are the result of limited ecological knowledge, lack of citizen interest or political will to protect them. There are isolated efforts to restore urban streams and riparian zones, but these are initial steps that need further development. Conclusions: Our research network of Latin American scientists proved to be a valuable tool to assess a large number of urban rivers in a relatively understudied region. Urban streams in Latin America face a diversity of stressors and management challenges, and we propose three areas that would benefit from further research to improve our understanding and management of these systems: (1) Studies should focus on the watershed, rather than isolated reaches, (2) researchers should strive to attain a better understanding of ecosystem function and the services provided by urban streams to justify management and restoration efforts, and (3) studies that integrate economic models where downstream users pay for upstream protection and restoration could prove beneficial for many Latin American cities in attempting to address water conservation issues.
Introducción: Latinoamérica es una región altamente urbanizada, con la mayoría de su población viviendo en ciudades y centros urbanos. Es bastante limitada la información sobre los ríos urbanos en esta región, sin embargo, se reconocen algunas problemáticas ambientales sobre estos ecosistemas urbanos, los cuales suelen ser similares en toda la región. Algunas de estas son la pérdida de hábitat, la canalización, la descarga de aguas residuales, la basura y la pérdida de zonas ribereñas. Objetivo: Nuestro propósito es obtener información sobre la condición, el estado del conocimiento y las amenazas de nuestros ríos urbanos en Latinoamérica. Métodos: Para esto se compartió una encuesta entre investigadores de la región, contactados en su mayoría a través de la red Macrolatinos@ (www.macrolatinos.net). Resultados: Se recibieron 104 respuestas de personas en 18 países, de los 23 que conforman Latinoamérica. La mayoría de los ríos urbanos se encuentran degradados, principalmente por los aportes de contaminantes y la descarga de aguas residuales. Existen ríos que han sido canalizados completamente, sin embargo, otros presentan algunos tramos con estructuras duras y muy pocos muestran una condición natural. El manejo de las aguas residuales y de la escorrentía de lluvias se identificaron como un factor importante en estos ríos. Es común encontrar sistemas combinados de alcantarillado y escorrentía de lluvias, que finalmente se mezclan y llegan a los ríos sin un tratamiento considerable. Las principales limitaciones para la conservación y restauración de los ríos urbanos en Latinoamérica es la falta de conocimiento ecológico, el desinterés del ciudadano y la falta de voluntad política. Aunque existen esfuerzos aislados que viene trabajando por restaurar tanto los ríos como las zonas ribereñas, estos son pasos iniciales que necesitan un mayor desarrollo. Conclusiones: Nuestra red de investigación de científicos latinoamericanos demostró ser una herramienta valiosa para evaluar una cantidad de ríos urbanos de forma rápida y precisa. Nuestros ríos enfrentan una serie de impactos estresantes, por lo que requieren urgente gestión. Se proponen tres áreas o enfoques particulares para mejorar la comprensión y gestión de los ríos urbanos en Latinoamérica: (1) Los estudios deben centrarse desde la visión de cuenca, (2) Es necesario una comprensión de la función del ecosistema acuático y la identificación de los servicios ecosistémicos, para justificar la gestión y restauración, y finalmente, (3) Los modelos de pagos por servicios ambientales pueden ser una buena estrategia para gestionar proyectos de conservación y restauración en las cuencas altas de estos ríos urbanos.

AIMS: Our main goal is to study the effects on the carbohydrate metabolism. Thus, we designed various experimental surgical models on healthy non-obese Wistar rats to reproduce several conditions. In this sense, we report a new experimental model. It is well known that bariatric surgery has important effects on the control of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. The underlying reasons are yet unknown, although the different theories focused in the release of different hormones after the pass of the nutrients through the tract. These released hormones have opposite effects that come together in a balanced glycemic metabolism. MATERIALS AND METHODS: After bariatric surgical techniques, the modified anatomy resulted in an imbalance of the secreted hormones. Wistar rats were randomized in two groups Sham and surgical group. Our model consisted on the transposition of the terminal ileum right after the pylorus. Weight gain, food intake, and basal glycemia were measured weekly. RESULTS: We did not obtain significant differences between both groups for these functional variables. CONCLUSIONS: This technique involved an early pass of the bolus through the ileum. The change on the luminal pH, along with the lack of enzymes to absorb the content, or the changes in the release of several hormones must be variables to the study. The mortality rate was assumable considering it was an experimental model on animals.
OBJETIVO: Crear un nuevo modelo quirúrgico experimental en ratas Wistar sanas no obesas para estudiar los efectos del metabolismo glucídico. Es bien sabido que las técnicas de cirugía bariátrica tienen un efecto importante sobre la resolución de la diabetes mellitus tipo 2. Se han invocado diferentes hipótesis, algunas centradas en el papel que tienen distintas hormonas secretadas por el propio tubo digestivo tras el paso de los nutrientes a su través, pero las razones últimas subyacentes permanecen desconocidas. El efecto contrapuesto de dichas hormonas consigue un efecto de control glucémico. El desequilibrio hormonal tras las alteraciones anatómicas de las cirugías bariátricas podría estar en la base de dicha mejora del metabolismo glucídico final. MATERIAL Y MÉTODOS: Las ratas fueron operadas en dos grupos (control quirúrgico y experimental) y se procedió a disponerles el íleon anastomosado al antro pilórico, previo al esfínter pilórico. Medimos distintos parámetros funcionales (ganancia de peso, ingesta y glucemias semanales). RESULTADOS: No obtuvimos diferencias significativas en la evolución de estos parámetros. CONCLUSIONES: Este modelo será útil para nuestro propósito de estudiar el íleon, en su componente secretor de enterohormonas, cuando el paso de los nutrientes se produzca tempranamente. La mortalidad fue asumible, dada la innovación técnica realizada.

Nutrient inputs to surface waters are particularly varied in urban areas, due to multiple nutrient sources and complex hydrologic pathways. Because of their close proximity to coastal waters, nutrient delivery from many urban areas can have profound impacts on coastal ecology. Relatively little is known about the temporal and spatial variability in stoichiometry of inorganic nutrients such as dissolved silica, nitrogen, and phosphorus (Si, N, and P) and dissolved organic matter in tropical urban environments. We examined nutrient stoichiometry of both inorganic nutrients and organic matter in an urban watershed in Puerto Rico served by municipal sanitary sewers and compared it to two nearby forested catchments using samples collected weekly from each river for 6 yr. Urbanization caused large increases in the concentration and flux of nitrogen and phosphorus (2- to 50-fold), but surprisingly little change in N:P ratio. Concentrations of almost all major ions and dissolved silica were also significantly higher in the urban river than the wildland rivers. Yield of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) was not increased dramatically by urbanization, but the composition of dissolved organic matter shifted toward N-rich material, with a larger increase in dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) than DOC. The molar ratio of DOC:DON was about 40 in rivers draining forested catchments but was only 10 in the urban river. Inclusion of Si in the assessment of urbanization's impacts reveals a large shift in the stoichiometry (Si:N and Si:P) of nutrient inputs. Because both Si concentrations and watershed exports are high in streams and rivers from many humid tropical catchments with siliceous bedrock, even the large increases in N and P exported from urban catchments result in delivery of Si, N, and P to coastal waters in stoichiometric ratios that are well in excess of the Si requirements of marine diatoms. Our data suggest that dissolved Si, often neglected in watershed biogeochemistry, should be included in studies of urban as well as less developed watersheds due to its potential significance for marine and lacustrine productivity.

RESUMEN: Numerosas hipótesis se invocan para explicar el efecto beneficioso sobre el metabolismo glucídico tras la cirugía bariátrica. Algunos autores abogan por la secreción y liberación de distintas sustancias con funciones endocrinas (enterohormonas). Una de las sustancias más señaladas como efector, con efectos contrastados pero datos controvertidos, es el GLP-1. Nuestro estudio se realizó en ratas Wistar macho sanas, para evitar la ausencia de factores de confusión como son la DMT2 y la obesidad. Para conocer el mapa de adaptación a la secreción de GLP-1 tras la cirugía, se designaron 5 grupos: dos grupos control (de ayuno y de estrés quirúrgico); y tres grupos quirúrgicos (gastrectomía vertical, resección del 50 % del intestino medio y el Bypass gástrico con montaje en Y de Roux). Después de tres meses se estudiaron mediante técnicas inmunohistoquímicas el patrón de síntesis de GLP-1 en las distintas porciones del intestino delgado. También se estudió la expresión de los receptores de membrana en las células de los islotes pancreáticos. Se observó la existencia de un significativo aumento del número de células secretoras en íleon, duodeno y yeyuno en los grupos quirúrgicos de técnicas mixtas (RYGB) y malabsortivas (RI50). Igualmente se observó una elevación de los receptores pancreáticos en las mismas técnicas frente a los controles. Nuestros datos indican que la secreción intestinal de GLP-1 y su sensibilidad a nivel pancreáticas están aumentada, como efecto adaptativo a la agresión mecánica del tubo y a la alteración del flujo de nutrientes tras la cirugía.
SUMMARY: Numerous hypotheses are invoked to explain the beneficial effect on glucose metabolism after bariatric surgery. Some authors advocate for the secretion and release of various substances with endocrine functions (enterohormones). One of the substances most marked as effector, with contrasting effects but controversial data, is Glucagon-like peptide-1 GLP-1. Our study was performed in healthy male Wistar rats, to avoid the absence of confounding factors such as DMT2 and obesity. In order to know the map of adaptation to GLP-1 secretion after surgery, five groups were designated: Two control groups (fasting and surgical stress); and three surgical groups (vertical sleeve gastrectomy, 50 % midgut resection and Roux-en-Y gastric bypass). After three months, the GLP-1 synthesis pattern was studied by immunohistochemical techniques in the different portions of the small digestive tract. The expression of membrane receptors in pancreatic islet cells was also studied. There was a significant increase in the number of secretory cells in ileum, duodenum and jejunum in mixed surgical (RYGB) and malabsorptive (RI50) groups. An elevation of pancreatic receptors was also observed in the same techniques against controls. Our data indicated that intestinal secretion of GLP1 and its sensitivity to the pancreatic level were increased, both to an adaptive effect to the mechanical aggression of the digestive tube and to the alteration of nutrient flow after surgery.

Abstract Caddisflies are abundant, diverse, and important insects in freshwater ecosystems. However our knowledge on their life history is incomplete, in particular for the Neotropics. The objectives of this study were to describe the life history and phenology of Phylloicus pulchrus in the Luquillo Experimental Forest, Puerto Rico. Eggs and larvae were reared to determine the species lifespan and time in each instar. Larval instars were determined based on a head width vs. pronotal suture length correlation (N= 120). Larvae and benthic leaf litter were sampled monthly at a headwater stream for a year; all specimens were classified into instars based on their case size. Adult P. pulchrus were sampled monthly for a year with a light trap and at various times with a Malaise trap. Monthly environmental variables were related to species and sex abundance. There was a gradient of egg development where eggs (within compound masses) closest to the water were more developed. There were five larval instars and reared larvae showed longer development times and more variable body measurements in later instars. The best correlation for larval instar determination was case length-head width (Pearson= 0.90, P= 2.2e-16, N= 120). Phylloicus pulchrus has a multivoltine life cycle, with asynchronous larval development. Adult abundance was low. First to third instar larvae were influenced significantly by rainfall and rainfall seasonality had a negative significant effect on second instar larval abundance (ANOVA= 7.45, P= 0.02).Compound egg masses were probably oviposited by different females that gathered for oviposition. Phylloicus pulchrus follows the predominant developmental characteristic of Trichoptera of having five larval stages. Development times were longer than expected (longest times for a Phylloicus species) and may be an effect of laboratory rearing. The influence of rainfall (and seasonality) on different larval instars highlights the importance of this variable on early larval development. Resumen Los tricópteros son insectos abundantes, diversos e importantes en los ecosistemas de agua dulce. Sin embargo el conocimiento sobre su historia de vida es incompleto, en particular para el Neotrópico. Los objetivos de este estudio fueron describir la historia de vida y fenología de Phylloicus pulchrus en el Bosque Experimental de Luquillo, Puerto Rico. Huevos y larvas fueron criadas para determinar la extención y tiempo de vida de cada estadio de la especie. Los estadios larvales fueron determinados basados en la correlación del ancho de cabeza vs. largo de la sutura pronotal (N= 120). Se muestrearon larvas y hojarasca béntica mensualmente por un año, todos los especímenes se clasificaron en estadios por el tamaño del estuche. Los adultos de P. pulchrus fueron recolectados mensualmente por un año utilizando una trampa de luz y varias recolectas con una trampa Malaise. Datos mensuales de variables ambientales fueron usados para explicar la abundancia total y por sexo de la especie. Se detectó un gradiente de desarrollo de los huevos donde los huevos (dentro de masa compuesta) más cercanos al agua estaban más desarrollados. Fueron cinco los estadios larvales y las larvas criadas mostraron tiempos de desarrollo más largos y mayor dispersión en las medidas corporales de los estadios tardíos. La mejor correlación para la determinación de estadios fue largo del estuche-ancho de cabeza (Pearson= 0.90, P= 2.2e-16, N= 120). Phylloicus pulchrus tiene un ciclo de vida multivoltino con desarrollo larval asíncrono. La abundancia de adultos fue baja. Los primeros tres estadios larvales fueron influenciados significativamente por la lluvia y la estacionalidad de la lluvia tuvo un efecto significativo en la abundancia del segundo estadio larval (ANOVA= 7.45, P= 0.02). Las masas de huevo complejas fueron probablemente ovipositadas por diferentes hembras que se reunieron para oviponer. Phylloicus pulchrus mantiene la característica de desarrollo predominante en Trichoptera de tener cinco estadios larvales. Los tiempos de desarrollo fueron mayores a lo esperado (los más largos para una especie de Phylloicus) y puede ser un efecto de la crianza en el laboratorio. El ciclo de vida multivoltino asíncrono observado es el esperado en un entorno tropical debido a las temperaturas más cálidas del agua, la disponibilidad constante de recursos y la baja estacionalidad. La causa de la poca abundancia de adultos permanece incierta, aunque puede estar relacionada con bajas tasas de emergencia y la eficiencia de la trampa de luz. La influencia de la lluvia (y su estacionalidad) en diferentes estadios larvales evidencian la importancia de esta variable en el desarrollo larval temprano.
