ABSTRACT

Context: An unfavorable event that can hinder endodontic treatment and affect the outcome of root canal treatment is the separation of endodontic instruments. Endodontic instrument separation can occur due to clinical or metallurgical factors. Friction between the ultrasonic tip and the remaining dentin generates heat, which is subsequently transferred to the external root surface. Elevated temperatures exceeding 10°C above body temperature for more than a minute may result in injury to periodontal or bone tissue. Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare temperature rise on the external root surface of teeth during retrieval of broken NiTi instrument using two different ultrasonic tips and two power settings. Materials and Methods: In each group, a sample size of 8 was sufficient to attain a statistical power exceeding 90%, enabling the detection of a minimum mean difference of 0.9204 (delta) through a one-way ANOVA test at a 95% confidence level (alpha 0.05). After access opening and working length determination, samples were randomly distributed into two groups - Group 1 (A and B) - ProUltra tip at high and low power settings and Group 2 (A and B) - Cric Dental IR3 at high and low power settings. The temperature rise was measured using K-type thermocouple thermometer. The comparisons were analyzed using the Kruskal-Wallis test with pairwise comparisons using the Dunn's test. Results: Group 1A and Group 1B resulted in lower heat generation compared to Group 2A and 2B and its difference was statistically significant (P < 0.05). Minimum temperature rise is seen in the ProUltra group at lower power settings (Group 1A) at the apical level and maximum temperature rise is seen in the Cric Dental IR3 group at higher power settings (Group 2B) at the middle third level. Conclusion: It was found that there is a significant temperature rise seen when ultrasonic tips are used for the retrieval of separated files, especially at higher power settings. The ProUltra tip demonstrated the lowest temperature rise at lower power settings, particularly at the apical level, whereas the IR3 Cric Dental tip exhibited the highest temperature rise, notably at higher power settings and the middle third level.

Effective patient education and communication are integral components of quality dental care, contributing to informed decision-making, treatment compliance, and positive clinical outcomes. However, traditional methods face challenges such as language barriers, anxiety, and information retention issues. Artificial intelligence (AI) presents innovative solutions to enhance patient engagement and communication in dentistry. This review explores the transformative role of AI in redefining patient education and communication strategies, focusing on applications, benefits, challenges, and future directions. A literature search identified articles from 2018 to 2024, encompassing empirical evidence and conceptual frameworks related to AI in dental patient engagement and communication. Key findings reveal AI's potential to offer personalized educational materials, virtual consultations, language translation tools, and virtual reality simulations, improving patient understanding and experience. Despite advancements, concerns about overreliance, accuracy, implementation costs, patient acceptance, privacy, and regulatory compliance persist. Future implications suggest AI's ability to track patient progress, analyze feedback, streamline administrative processes, and provide ongoing support, enhancing oral health outcomes. However, ethical, regulatory, and equity considerations require attention for responsible AI deployment and widespread adoption. Overall, AI holds promise for revolutionizing dental patient education, communication, and care delivery, emphasizing the need for comprehensive strategies to address emerging challenges and maximize benefits.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Recent studies have postulated several hypotheses explaining the association between migraines and periodontitis. We aimed to systematically review and assess if there is an association between inflammatory mediators in migraines and periodontal disease. Indexed database search was performed from inception up to and including April 2022. Data such as study design, study grouping, participants, age, sex, migraine characteristics, assessment criteria for periodontitis and outcomes were collected. Methodological index for non-randomized studies was used to assess the risk of bias. The systematic analysis format was personalized to review the appropriate information. HIGHLIGHTS: Levels of pro-inflammatory mediators such as serum procalcitonin, leptin, calcitonin gene related peptide and interleukin-6 were elevated in patients with chronic periodontitis and migraines. CONCLUSION: Chronic periodontitis may be a contributing factor for migraines. However, future standardized studies are required to understand the true relationship at a clinical and molecular level. This may better help in managing patients with comorbid conditions in the future.

ABSTRACT

Owing to their properties such as biocompatibility, tunable mechanical properties, permeability toward oxygen, nutrients, and the ability to hold a significant amount of water, hydrogels have wide applications in biomedical research. They have been engaged in drug delivery systems, 3D cell culture, imaging, and extracellular matrix (ECM) mimetics. Injectable hydrogels represent a major subset of hydrogels possessing advantages of site-specific conformation with minimal invasive techniques. It preserves the inherent properties of drug/biomolecules and is devoid of any side effects associated with surgery. Various polymeric materials utilized in developing injectable hydrogels are associated with the limitations of toxicity, immunogenicity, tedious manufacturing processes, and lack of easy synthetic tunability. Peptides are an important class of biomaterials that have interesting properties such as biocompatibility, stimuli responsiveness, shear thinning, self-healing, and biosignaling. They lack immunogenicity and toxicity. Therefore, numerous peptide-based injectable hydrogels have been explored in the past, and a few of them have reached the market. In recent years, minimalistic dipeptides have shown their ability to form stable hydrogels through cooperative noncovalent interactions. In addition to inherent properties of lengthy peptide-based injectable hydrogels, dipeptides have the unique advantages of low production cost, high synthetic accessibility, and higher stability. Given the instances of expanding significance of injectable peptide hydrogels in biomedical research and an emerging recent trend of dipeptide-based injectable hydrogels, a timely review on dipeptide-based injectable hydrogels shall highlight various aspects of this interesting class of biomaterials. This concise review that focuses on the dipeptide injectable hydrogel may stimulate the current trends of research on this class of biomaterial to translate its significance as interesting products for biomedical applications.

CONTEXT: The gingival biotype is of utmost importance for esthetics and biologic function. Anatomical characteristic of periodontium such as gingival thickness (GT), width of keratinized gingiva, and alveolar bone morphology will determine the behavior of periodontium when subjected to physical, chemical, or bacterial insult or during therapeutic procedure. AIMS: The aim of this study was to correlate the GT with gingival width (GW), probing depth (PD), and papillary fill (PF) in relation to maxillary anterior region. SETTINGS AND DESIGN: Undergraduate dental students and interns from a dental college in Navi Mumbai were enrolled in the study according to the inclusion criteria. Six teeth per subject were assessed; a total of 2178 maxillary anterior teeth were examined. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Subjects were examined clinically for GT, width of keratinized gingiva, pocket depth, and interdental PF. The data obtained was tabulated and subjected to statistical analysis. STATISTICAL ANALYSIS USED: Spearman's correlation analysis test was performed to find the correlation of GT with GW, PD, and PF. RESULTS: Positive correlation was found between GT and GW (r = 0.241). No significant correlation could be found between GT and PD; and between GT and PF. CONCLUSIONS: The present study confirmed a positive correlation between GT and GW. A weak negative correlation was found between GT and PD.
