ABSTRACT

AIM: The present study aimed at evaluating and comparing the transverse strength of heat polymerizing acrylic resin samples repaired using glass fiber-reinforced autopolymerizing acrylic resin with varying gap widths at the fracture site. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Heat polymerizing acrylic resin samples of dimensions 65 * 10 * 2.5 mm each were fabricated. Ten of these were used as control. In the rest of samples, two grooves were fabricated and surface treated with ethyl acetate. The repair gap width was standardized at 4, 3, 2, and 1 mm. Totally, 80 samples were equally divided into these four groups. Glass fiber-reinforced autopolymerizing acrylic resin was used to repair these samples. The repaired samples and the control groups were subjected to three-point bending test, and the findings were analyzed statistically. RESULTS: It was observed that with increase in gap width, their transverse strength decreased. Most of the fractures occurred at the joint interface of parent and repair material. The fracture within the repaired material occurred highest in the group that had 4 mm gap, followed by groups that had 3 and 2 mm gaps. In the group with 1 mm gap, there was no occurrence of fracture within the repaired material. CONCLUSION: To achieve optimum repair strength of a repaired denture, the gap width should not be greater than 1 mm. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The study will aid in determining the ideal gap width for denture repair to prevent fracture and also the clinical application of glass fiber-reinforced autopolymerizing acrylic resin.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study is to evaluate the various applications of cortical bone screws in oral and maxillofacial surgery. MATERIALS & METHODS: The study was conducted in a teaching hospital located in, Bangalore, India, on 20 patients. These patients were categorized into three groups depending on the applications of these screws like, for achieving intermaxillary fixation in Group-1, for treatment of simple, undisplaced fractures by "Tension wire" method in Group-2, and further application of these screws were evaluated in Group-3. Different parameters were used to evaluate the efficacy of these screws. RESULTS: In Group-1(n=12) there was satisfactory occlusion in all the patients with minimal incidence of complications. In Group-2 (n=4) post-operative reduction and fixation was satisfactory and in Group-3 (n=4) the function of these screws was satisfactory when it was used for vestibuloplasty and also as a suspension wiring in treatment of comminuted fracture of zygoma with minimal incidence of complications. CONCLUSION: Use of cortical bone screws is a valid alternative for achieving intermaxillary fixation, reduction and fixation of simple, undisplaced or minimally displaced fractures through Tension wire method owing to its simplicity, economy and ease of use, and as a fixation method for apically positioned flap in vestibuloplasty procedure. ABSTRACT

Oral health is not separate from general health, but maintaining oral health is definitely difficult and different in old age. Even though, few elderly have physical and/or mental situation that call for particular interest in the dental workplace, one should not presume that all elderly community shares these circumstances. In order to achieve health, it is necessary to know few aspects of old age. In due course of old age body tissues get harder, collection of waste products in body cells and loss of lubrication leads to impaired functions of various organs. The design and implementation of comprehensive preventive dentistry protocols for elders presents the dental profession with many challenges. Although a specific protocol must be tailored to meet the unique needs of the individual patient, there are certain factors common to elderly segment of the population that may influence these protocols.

ABSTRACT

AIM: To compare the effect of four different finishing systems and diamond paste on ceramic roughness with the objectives of evaluating the roughness of ceramic surface of prepared specimens after abrasion, finishing and polishing. MATERIALS & METHODS: A total of 50 test specimens were fabricated in the form of discs of diameter 13mm and 0.6mm thickness. Test specimens were then randomly distributed into five groups of 10 and coded. All the test specimens were then abraded with 125µm diamond in unidirectional motion to create surface roughness that will simulate occlusal or incisal correction. The values were recorded and the specimens were then finished using the various finishing systems. multiple range tests by Duncan's procedure. One way Anova was used to calculate the p-value Results:After fini shing, the Ra,Rq,Rz and Rt values showed a tendency to decline to levels much inferior to the values obtained after the preparation of the specimens. Ra values of group III specimens were slightly higher and the increase was significant. The highest Rt value [5.29] obtained after polishing is below the lowest roughness values [7.42] obtained after finishing the specimens. CONCLUSIONS: Finishing and polishing procedures have a significant role in reducing the roughness of ceramics.Following abrasion with diamond point to simulate clinical adjustment the roughness values doubled when compared to the initial reading.Ra, Rq,Rz and Rt values suggest that Sof lex is the most efficient of all the systems tested followed by auto glazing.After the final diamond paste polishing, sof lex group specimens showed the best finish and auto glazed specimens showed a value almost as equal to the so flex group.
