ABSTRACT

A method for the decomposition of optical spectra into bands was proposed, which is based on simultaneous approximation of the initial spectrum and its derivatives. The bands of the standard (gaussian) form were used in the decomposition procedure. A method for the selection of the optimal smoothing filter was described. The efficiency of the proposed method was demonstrated on model and experimental absorption spectra. It was shown that this method makes it possible to determine the number of bands and its parameters more exactly than the standard approach based on the analysis of one derivative of one power.

ABSTRACT

Absorption and circular dichroism spectra of two forms of the peripheral light-harvesting complex from photosynthetic purple bacteria Rhodopseudomonas acidophila were calculated. Calculations were carried out on the basis of exciton theory for circular aggregates of bacteriochlorophyll molecules and X-ray data for these forms of the complex. It was shown that theoretical spectra fit well experimental ones at the same values of excitation energy, homogeneous and inhomogeneous broadening, and bandwidth for all bacteriochlorophyll molecules of complexes. To approximate the circular dichroism spectra of complexes, it was necessary to change the orientations and the values of the moments of transition of Qy molecules relative to their orientation determined on the basis of X-ray structure analysis data.

ABSTRACT

Two-photon fluorescence excitation spectra of the peripheral light-harvesting complex LH2 from the purple photosynthetic bacterium Chromatium minutissimum were examined within the expected spectral range of the optically forbidden S1 singlet state of carotenoids. LH2 preparations isolated from wild-type and carotenoid-depleted cells were used. 100-fs laser pulses in the range of 1300-1490 nm with an energy of 7-9 mW (corresponding to one-photon absorption between 650 and 745 nm) were used for two-photon fluorescence excitation. It was shown that two-photon fluorescence excitation spectra of LH2 complex from wild and carotenoid-depleted cells are very similar to each other and to the two-photon fluorescence excitation spectrum of bacteriochlorophyll a in acetone. It was concluded that direct two-photon excitation of bacteriochlorophyll a determines the fluorescence of both samples within the 650-745 nm spectral range.

ABSTRACT

Enzyme immunoassays have shown mean fibronectin (FN) level to be 241.0 +/- 15.1 micrograms/ml in normal children between 2 and 15 years of age. Similar assays in 57 patients with congenital heart diseases (CHD) before and after surgery demonstrated preoperative FN decrease in 56% of patients, that was directly related to the extent of hemodynamic disorders, while postoperative FN level depended on the range and type of surgical trauma and the presence of inflammatory or suppurative-septic complications. Within 3 postoperative days, FN drops below normal level in 95% of patients. In spite of therapeutic use of blood and blood components, FN deficiency was not compensated for until day 10 after surgical correction of the valvular defect.
