ABSTRACT

Diet selection and preference by grazing animals are determined by genetic and environmental factors that interact and affect their efficacy for managing vegetation as targeted grazers and developing animals adapted to local grazing environments. The effect of the rearing environments on the consumption of juniper (Juniperus spp.) by goats that for 15 years were divergently selected for high (J+) or low (J-) percent juniper in their diet was investigated. To test the effect of rearing environment, at the end of the breeding season, pregnant does from both selection lines were grazed on either juniper-infested (JIR) or juniper-free (JFR) rangelands until their kids were weaned at about 75 days of age. Fecal samples were analyzed with fecal near-IR spectroscopy to determine the percent juniper in the diet. Fecal samples were collected from does on JIR when their offspring were 30 days of age and at weaning. Then, does that raised kids in both rearing environments grazed a common JIR pasture for a 28-day adaptation period before collecting fecal samples. After weaning, kids from both rearing environments grazed JIR for 22 days before collecting fecal samples. The J+ does always consumed more (P < 0.001) juniper than J- does, demonstrating different maternal role models for kids reared in the JIR environment. There was no effect of rearing environment (P = 0.488) or rearing environment × selection line interaction (P = 0.096) when J- and J+ does grazed a common JIR pasture. The percentage of juniper in J- kid diets (7%) was the same regardless of the rearing environment. However, the rearing environment did affect the percentage of juniper in the diet of J+ kids, resulting in a gene-environment interaction (P = 0.022). The percentage of juniper in the diet of J+ kids reared in JFR (16%) and JIR (24%) were about two and three times higher than J- kids, respectively, indicating that genetics and the rearing environment contributed about equally to the increase in the percentage of juniper in the J+ kid diets. Regardless of the rearing environment, the J+ kids had a higher percentage of juniper in their diets than J- kids (P < 0.001). Compared to males, female kids had a higher percentage of juniper in their diets (12 vs 17%, respectively; P = 0.002). The ability to select animals with specific dietary preferences holds promise for targeted grazing strategies to restore degraded rangelands, with potential applications in conservation and ecosystem management.

ABSTRACT

Aquaculture eco-certification schemes provide standards against which individual farms are assessed, and those farms that comply with eco-certification criteria receive certified status. These schemes aim to improve aquaculture sustainability, but the site-by-site approach of eco-certification can be a barrier to the inclusion of ecosystem perspectives in the evaluation of farm sustainability. However, the ecosystem approach to aquaculture demands a management approach that considers broader scale ecosystem impacts. This study explored how eco-certification schemes and processes account for potential ecosystem impacts of salmon farms. Interviews with eco-certification auditors, salmon producers, and eco-certification staff were conducted. The experience of participants and information from eco-certification scheme criteria and other eco-certification scheme documents were used to identify thematic challenges associated with the consideration of ecosystem impacts including: assessing far-field impacts, managing cumulative effects, and anticipating ecosystem risks. Results indicate that eco-certification schemes work within the limitations of farm-scale application of global eco-certification standards to address potential ecosystem impacts by: (1) including eco-certification scheme criteria that address ecosystem impacts, (2) relying on the experience, expertise, and judgement of eco-certification auditors, and (3) referencing and deferring to local regulations. Results indicate that eco-certification schemes can address ecosystem impacts to some degree, despite their site-by-site approach. The integration of additional tools while supporting the capacity of farms to apply those tools, as well as increasing transparency during compliance assessment could help eco-certification schemes shift from providing assurance of farm sustainability to providing assurance of ecosystem sustainability.

ABSTRACT

Prevalence of Achilles tendinopathy increases with age leading to a weaker tendon with predisposition to rupture. Conclusive evidence of the influence of age and pathology on Achilles tendon (AT) properties remains limited, as previous studies are based on standardized isometric conditions. The study investigates the influence of age and pathology on AT properties during single-leg vertical jump (SLVJ). 10 children (C), 10 asymptomatic adults (A), and 10 tendinopathic patients (T) were included. AT elongation [mm] from rest to maximal displacement during a SLVJ on a force-plate was sonographically assessed. AT compliance [mm/N]) and strain [%] was calculated by dividing elongation by peak ground reaction force [N] and length, respectively. One-way ANOVA followed by Bonferroni post-hoc correction (α=0.05) were used to compare C with A and A with T. AT elongation (p=0.004), compliance (p=0.001), and strain were found to be statistically significant higher in C (27±3 mm, 0.026±0.006 [mm/N], 13±2%) compared to A (21±4 mm, 0.017±0.005 [mm/N], 10±2%). No statistically significant differences (p≥0.05) was found between A and T (25±5 mm, 0.019±0.004 [mm/N], 12±3%). During SLVJ, tendon responded differently in regards to age and pathology with children having the most compliant AT. Higher compliance found in healthy tendons might be considered as a protective factor against load-related injuries.

ABSTRACT

The aim of the rheumatology network ADAPTHERA ("risk-adapted rheumatology therapy") is to achieve a comprehensive improvement in rheumatology care by coordinating treatment in a regional, trans-sectoral network. Accompanying biomedical research projects, training concepts, and the construction of a rheumatology register (gathering data and biomaterials) should furthermore ensure the stable and sustainable optimisation of care. In the pilot phase (2012-2015) the focus of the ADAPTHERA network, required as a "regional key project" within the framework of the Initiative on Health Economy of Rheinland-Palatinate (RL-P), Germany, was placed on the optimisation of the early diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis, where it is well-known that there is a significant care deficit.Through the intensive, stable, and coordinated cooperation of all health care partners in the field of rheumatology (registered general practitioners and orthopaedic specialists, registered core rheumatologists as well as the Association of Rheumatology of RL-P) a unique regional, comprehensive offer with verifiable care optimisation has been established in RL-P. The network is supported by outstanding collaboration with the Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians and the self-help organisation Rheumatology League.The aims that were established at the start of the project will be achieved by the end of the pilot phase:- significant improvement in the early diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis (an average of 23.7 days until diagnosis by rheumatologists)- access covering all health insurance (regardless of the particular scheme the patients belong to)- comprehensive (verifiable participation of general practitioners from all over RL-P)- data and biomaterials collection, established as a basis for biomarker research, and a rheumatology register for RL-P.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Chagas disease (Trypanosomiasis) is a cause of myocarditis in the southern United States causing cardiac conduction abnormalities, arrhythmias, and heart failure. OBJECTIVES: To report clinical findings and outcome in Chagas positive (CP) dogs requiring pacemaker implantation for bradyarrhythmias. ANIMALS: One hundred and forty-four client-owned dogs requiring pacemaker implantation. METHODS: Retrospective case series. Information regarding history, physical exam, laboratory and diagnostic imaging findings, treatment, and survival were obtained from medical records, with additional follow-up information obtained by contacting referring veterinarians and owners. RESULTS: Of the 144 dogs requiring pacemaker implantation from January 2001 to May 2010, 83 (57.6%) had a Chagas titer performed and 9 (10%) were CP. Concurrent ventricular arrhythmias (odds ratio 1.61, P = .005) or atrioventricular (AV) block (odds ratio 4.18, P < .001) increased the likelihood that a Chagas titer was submitted. Median age for CP dogs was 6.2 years (range, 0.3-10); 7 were male. Bradyarrhythmias included high-grade 2nd or 3rd degree AV block (n = 8) and sinus bradycardia with 1st degree AV block (n = 1); 5 had concurrent ventricular arrhythmias. A positive Chagas titer had a negative impact on survival (hazard ratio 4.04; 95% CI 1.36-12.1, P = .012) with a reported median survival time of 365 days (interquartile range, 84-973 days). CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL IMPORTANCE: Bradyarrhythmias can result in clinical signs requiring pacemaker implantation in CP dogs, and although the diagnosis negatively impacts survival, pacemaker therapy is a viable treatment option.

ABSTRACT

Corticosterone (CORT) levels in seabirds fluctuate across breeding stages and in different foraging conditions. Here we use a ten-year data set to examine whether CORT levels in Atlantic puffins differ in years with high or low availability of capelin, the preferred forage species. Female puffins had higher CORT levels than males, possibly related to cumulative costs of egg production and higher parental investment. Puffins had higher CORT levels and body mass during pre-breeding than during chick rearing. Yearly mean chick growth rates were higher in years when adults had higher body mass and in years where adults brought chicks a lower percentage of non-fish (invertebrates/larval fish) food. Unlike most results from seabird species with shorter chick-rearing periods, higher CORT levels in puffins were not associated with lower capelin abundance. Puffins may suppress CORT levels to conserve energy in case foraging conditions improve later in the prolonged chick-rearing period. Alternatively, CORT levels may be lowest both when food is very abundant (years not in our sample) or very scarce (e.g., 2009 in this study), and increase when extra foraging effort will increase foraging efficiency (most years in this study). If these data primarily represent years with medium to poor foraging, it is possible that CORT responses to variation in foraging conditions are similar for puffins and other seabirds.
