ABSTRACT

Twenty patients with cytologically verified diagnosis of lymphosarcoma of the major salivary glands (15 with lymphosarcoma of the parotid gland and 5 with lymphosarcoma of the submandibular gland) were treated by radiotherapy. Twelve patients presented with stage I E, 7 with stage II E, and 1 with stage IV EO. Metastases in the cervical lymph nodes were diagnosed in 7 patients. Total focal doses for the primary tumor and metastases were 30-40 Gy during 3-4 weeks. The observation of 2-4 years showed that radiotherapy led to cure of 12 (60+/-15.4%) patients. No trends to relapses and generalization of the process were observed. No preventive exposure of the lymph discharge zones was carried out.

ABSTRACT

Diagnosis and treatment of 228 patients with cancer of the buccal mucosa is analyzed. There were 130 women and 98 men aged 65 years on average. 218 were primary patients and 10 with relapses. Squamous-cell carcinomas with hornification predominated: 217 cases (95%). Adenocarcinoma was diagnosed in 8 (3.5%) and poorly differentiated cancer in 3 patients. Metastases to the regional lymph nodes were detected in 25% cases. For cosmetic reasons, radiotherapy (oral x-ray therapy, interstitial method, long-distance gamma beam therapy) was the method of choice.

ABSTRACT

The authors analyzed the clinical and morphological picture of Kaposi's sarcoma in a patient aged 38 with involvement of the facial skin and right buccal mucosa. Published reports and their own findings brought the authors to a conclusion that such a form of the disease is rare, characterized by specific clinical and morphological features, and difficult to treat. The prognosis is unfavorable because of generalization of the process, the duration of the disease ranging from several months to 20 years.

ABSTRACT

The results of gamma-beam therapy using a multifractional course in 373 patients with advanced stages of different parts of the maxillofacial area and neck were assessed. The 3-year survival rates among patients with stage IV (83.9%) were 18.8% for cancer of the organs of the oral cavity and 16.8% for cancer of the accessory nasal sinus and nose. Multifractional radiotherapy puts an end to painful symptoms in patients at advanced stages of cancer without causing any noticeable local reactions or deterioration in the patients' general status.
