ABSTRACT

Background: Prostate adenocarcinoma is one of the most prevalent malignancies worldwide. Despite often having a slow evolution, it still represents an important cause of death in oncology. Since its clinical results are very heterogeneous, there is a need to identify prognostic markers. Biomarkers are tools and technologies that can aid in this understanding. Objectives: To evaluate the presence of c-MET and ABCB5 in prostate adenocarcinoma and to analyze whether their expression correlates with prognostic factors. Method: 170 cases were selected through an active search in electronic medical records and review of physical records and anatomopathological reports. Immunohistochemistry was performed for the biomarkers c-MET and ABCB5 in all samples. Retrospective clinical data were collected and plotted in tables. Through TMA (tissue microarray) the tissues were submitted to immunohistochemistry by the peroxidase technique. Clinical and epidemiological information was cross-referenced with the result obtained by immunostaining and its statistical analysis. Results: Forty-seven men with a mean age of 61.6±6.9 (48-75), with a mean PSA of 11±9.7 (2.4-60.5) were included in this study. 2% had a Gleason score of 5 or 6 and 29, 1%, 7 or 8. Regarding tumor classification, 6 cases had T3a and 2 T3b staging. None had a tumor greater than T3b and there was 1 case of metastasis. With regard to biomarkers, there was positive labeling of c-MET in 32 cases and of ABCB5 in 5. Positive labeling had no statistically significant association with any of the prognostic factors evaluated. Conclusion: There was expression of c-MET and ABCB5 in the prostate cancer, but without association of them with prognostic factors.

ABSTRACT

Acute appendicitis is a common disease among children, with an incidence peak between 10-20 years of age and a higher prevalence in males. It often presents with periumbilical pain that migrates to the right iliac fossa, accompanied by symptoms. The diagnosis is clinical; however, some tests can be helpful, such as: blood count, PCR, partial urine, ultrasonography, X-ray, computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. The aim of this study was to verify the prevalence of appendicitis according to sex and age and the most prevalent clinical symptoms in the infancy. Retrospective study analyzing the medical records of patients who underwent appendectomy. Epidemiological characteristics, clinical aspects, physical examination and complementary exams of the patients were identified. In conclusion, acute appendicitis is suspected in a male, aged between 6-12 years, with abdominal pain, fever, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, anorexia or positive Blumberg, aided by complementary tests, being ultrasonography and laboratory tests preferred

ABSTRACT

In the histopathological analysis of prostate cancer, it is often possible to come across doubtful pseudoneoplastic and inconclusive lesions. Assessing its prevalence through the use of immunohistochemistry in patients with atypical acinar proliferation (PAAP) can improve diagnostic efficacy. This retrospective study included patients diagnosed with PAAP and immunohistochemistry using: AMACR, 34BE12 and p63. A total of 1542 PAAP positivity in 293 patients (19%) were analyzed. There was no significant difference in the efficiency of the three markers. Sensitivity was 99.7%; 100% and 100%, and the specificity of 79.4%; 89% and 83.5%, respectively. The positive predictive value was in 90.3%, 94.3% and 91.3%, and the negative in 99.3%; 100% and 100%, respectively. The smallness of the atypical area was mentioned by 92 (12.9%) as a difficulty for diagnosis. Immunohistochemistry was able to elucidate the diagnosis in 83.5% of the cases and the prevalence of prostate adenocarcinoma was 52.2%.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect of Schinus terebinthifolius Raddi (aroeira) and Orbignya phalerata Mart. (babassu) in the healing process of cecorrhaphy in rats. METHODS: : Fifty four rats were used, distributed into three groups randomly: aroeira, babassu and control, which were divided into three subgroups (six animals) according to the time of the deaths (7, 14, 21 days). All underwent the same surgical procedure, cecotomy and cecorrhaphy. The animals in group aroeira and babassu received daily dose of 100 mg/kg of hydroalcoholic extract and 50 mg/kg of aquous extract respectively, by gavage. The control group received only saline solution. The parameters evaluated were: macroscopic changes, ,resistance test to air insufflations and histological changes. RESULTS: : All animals showed good healing without infection. All groups presented adhesions between cecum and neighboring organs. The resistance test insufflating of atmospheric air showed progressive increase of pressure according to the days in the aroeira group, and decrease in babassu group, without significant difference. Microscopy showed significant difference in the polymorphonuclear, hyperemia, angiogenesis, fibroblast proliferation and collagen histological variables in the 14th day. CONCLUSION: : Hydroalcoholic extract of aroeira and the aqueous extract of babassu favored the healing process in cecorrhaphy in rats.
