The inhibitory effect of supraphysiological iodide concentrations on thyroid hormone synthesis (Wolff-Chaikoff effect) and on thyrocyte proliferation is largely known as iodine autoregulation. However, the molecular mechanisms by which iodide modulates thyroid function remain unclear.
