ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: This 2-part study was conducted to validate nurse manager (NM) leadership competencies that support clinicians in using evidence-based practice (EBP). BACKGROUND: Numerous studies validate the critical need for NM support among clinicians seeking to engage in EBP. METHODS: In phase 1, a Delphi study was conducted to establish the validity of a set of NM leadership competencies that support EBP. In phase 2, descriptive analyses, tests of significance, and reliability coefficients were used to assess reliability. RESULTS: An expert panel achieved consensus on a set of 22 NM leadership competencies that constitute effective support for EBP. Further quantitative analyses demonstrated excellent levels of internal consistency and overall consistent outcomes across time. CONCLUSION: A valid set of 22 NM leadership competencies with evidence of reliability that successfully support clinicians to engage in EBP in clinical settings was established.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of the pilot study was to investigate the perceptions of online teaching efficacy of nursing faculty who teach courses in which 51% or more of the content is offered online. Bandura's psychological construct of self-efficacy served as the conceptual framework. The research survey was administered to nursing faculty in a state university system located in the southeastern United States of America, plus two private universities. The Michigan Nurse Educator's Sense of Efficacy for Online Teaching Scale, which contains 32 items that measure how nurse educators judge their current capabilities for teaching online nursing courses, was used to gather data. Overall, the scores reflected that faculty perceived themselves as quite a bit efficacious on a scale that ranged from 1 to 9. As nursing educators received more support in designing and implementing online courses, their efficacy increased. It is critical that faculty are supported on an ongoing basis to increase and develop online teaching skills in order to teach high-quality courses in online programs. Faculty members must also be recognized for their work, time, and commitment required to be effective online educators. The findings of this study revealed those participants who had a number of professional development supports and release time to develop online courses have a greater sense of efficacy.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this project was to implement and evaluate the Video Analysis Tool (VAT) system, a tool for capturing and analyzing video evidence of students' clinical performance. Through the VAT system, nursing student dyads from 4 universities used a video camera, a computer, and a tripod in the residences of older adults to record interactions and psychosocial assessments of older adult clients. Using their recordings to compare their clinical activities with predefined clinical objectives derived from gerontological nursing standards, they made video clips of their assessments to demonstrate the required outcomes. Use of the VAT system received positive evaluations from students, faculty, and residents in multiple clinical sites. The process has significant implications for assessing clients and health care providers in their interactions in a variety of settings, including on home visits. It has additional applications for documenting performance measures of nurses and team members as they provide client care.
