ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Research suggests that many with schizophrenia experience deficits in the ability to make discrete judgments about the thoughts and feelings of others as well as to form larger integrated representations of themselves and others. Little is known about whether these difficulties may be distinguished from one another and whether they are linked with different outcomes. METHOD: We administered three assessments of social cognition which tapped the ability to identify emotions and intentions and two metacognitive tasks which called for the formation of more integrated and flexible representations of the self and others. We additionally assessed symptoms, social functioning and neurocognition. Participants were 95 individuals with a schizophrenia spectrum disorder. RESULTS: A principle components analysis followed by a varimax rotation revealed two factors which accounted for 62% of the variance. The first factor was comprised of the three social cognition tests and the second of two tasks that tapped the ability to create representations of oneself and others which integrate more discreet information. The first factor was uniquely correlated with negative symptoms, and the second was uniquely correlated with social function. CONCLUSION: Results suggest that deficits in social cognition and metacognition represent different forms of dysfunction in schizophrenia.

ABSTRACT

A fast near real-time monitoring system for hazardous airborne substances, such as chemical warfare agents (CWA) is presented and limits of detection (LOD) for five CW simulants are determined. A tandem thermal desorber (TTD) continuously collects and pre-concentrates air. The pre-concentrated samples are then separated in a fast gas chromatographic (GC) run of 6.9min. and detected by a time-of-flight mass spectrometer (TOFMS). The GC-TOFMS signals are evaluated using chemometric methods for deconvolution and target identification. The high toxicity of nerve agents requires extremely low detection limits; for some as low as 100 ng/m(3) (10 ppt). The combination of TTD, TOFMS and chemometric data evaluation methods enables the system to fulfill this requirement. Calibration measurements for five different CWA simulants show lower limits of detection in the range of 10 ng/m(3)-60 ng/m(3) (1-11 ppt). In addition, the ability to detect trace concentrations of real CWA is demonstrated with a measurement of 30 pg Sarin on column. Several other real CWA measurements are shown, like sulfur mustard in diesel, lewisite under humid conditions and VX. As part of this work the influence of stationary film thickness on peak tailing of organophosphates is investigated for peak shape optimization.

ABSTRACT

We isolated a mutant of R. leguminosarum initially on the basis of reduced production of the siderophore vicibactin on chrome azurol sulfonate (CAS)/agar indicator plates. The mutation was in the purMN operon and the mutant was shown to be an adenine auxotroph and defective for nodulation of peas. The siderophore defect appears to be trivial, being due to diminished growth of the auxotroph on agar-based minimal medium, which contains unknown contaminant(s) that allow it grow poorly. Transcriptional fusions showed that purMN was transcribed at relatively high levels in media containing purines. Expression was enhanced, approximately twofold, if purines were omitted.

ABSTRACT

A case of room-temperature vulcanizing (RTV) silicone injection of the hand is presented, and principles of management of high-pressure hand injuries are outlined. Early debridement and decompression are urgent in the acute stage of injury. Intermediate stages require adequate coverage and mobilization, and late stages involve reconstructive procedures. As in all high-pressure hand injuries, safety measures and prevention at the industrial level are very important.
