ABSTRACT

Pulse crops have been known for a long time to have beneficial nutritional profiles for human diets but have been neglected in terms of cultivation, consumption and scientific research in many parts of the world. Broad dietary shifts will be required if anthropogenic climate change is to be mitigated in the future, and pulse crops should be an important component of this change by providing an environmentally sustainable source of protein, resistant starch and micronutrients. Further enhancement of the nutritional composition of pulse crops could benefit human health, helping to alleviate micronutrient deficiencies and reduce risk of chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes. This paper reviews current knowledge regarding the nutritional content of pea (Pisum sativum L.) and faba bean (Vicia faba L.), two major UK pulse crops, and discusses the potential for their genetic improvement.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: In vitro data were collected to measure torque-force values of an internal distraction device. The measurements were correlated with in vivo torque readings in an attempt to better understand the force required to distract the osteogenic bone callus of the human mandible during distraction osteogenesis. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Five internal craniofacial distraction devices were mounted on an apparatus to test load limits and torque measurements. The apparatus aligned the devices so that weight provided a force opposite and parallel to the vector of distraction. Weights were added in 5-lb increments, and the devices were activated 0.5 mm for each torque reading. Torque readings were obtained from a calibrated torque wrench. Measurements were plotted on a graph and correlated with clinical torque readings obtained from 8 patients undergoing mandibular lengthening. RESULTS: The average torque for distracting the human mandible 0.5 mm twice a day was 4.2 +/- 1.6 Newton-centimeters (N-cm). The average slope of the in vitro data shows that 4.2 N-cm of torque is equivalent to a force of 35.6 N. The average force of device failure was 235.8 N. CONCLUSION: Torque-force diagrams offer an effective means for calibrating safety margins and load capabilities for internal distraction devices. Quantification of axial forces encountered in mandibular lengthening will help contribute to the overall understanding and biomechanics of mandibular distraction osteogenesis.

ABSTRACT

In the present study, numerosity estimation was investigated. A two-parameter Stevens power law analysis was performed on a total of 944 subjects in six experiments. Two pulse ranges (2-17 or 17-253 pulses) and six pulse rates (either constant or randomly varied within trial blocks) were used, variously, in an unsuccessful attempt to find evidence for a psychological moment, under the supposition that the exponent (or, possibly, the measure constant) would become smaller as increasing numbers of pulses fell within the interval determined by each psychological moment. A single-parameter reanalysis of these six experiments under the initial value condition that a (standard) stimulus of one pulse be assigned a theoretical response (modulus) of one yielded single-parameter equations whose exponents were reliably less varied than those for conventional two-parameter equations in Experiments 1-4 (with randomly varying pulse rates from trial to trial) but not less varied in Experiments 5 and 6 (in which pulse rates were constant within trial blocks). It was concluded that the variable pulse rate condition, with its reduced exponent variability and presumed reduced temporal confounding, provides a more valid estimate of the single-parameter power law exponent for numerosity, which was found to be 0.80.

ABSTRACT

Although U.S. immigration laws give favorable treatment to college and university teachers, hiring of alien physicians by medical schools and health sciences universities remains problematic, reflecting the impact of the 1976 Health Care Professions Act and the Immigration Control and Reform Act of 1986. The authors outline the steps in the hiring process to provide a useful reference for department chairpersons and division heads and to help them deal with the school administrators, attorneys, and immigration officials they will encounter during the hiring process. Of particular importance is understanding recruiting procedures, visa classifications, and the prohibition in hiring physicians directly from their U.S. residency and fellowship positions without having them first return for two years to their home countries. A common error is to recruit medical school faculty without first considering that the final candidates might be aliens; when they are, the process of hiring aliens must be dealt with retroactively. Immigration law currently does allow hiring an alien physician (as a teacher) if that physician is the most qualified candidate.
