ABSTRACT

The objective of this work was to verify the relationships between environmental conditions and microbial processes along a raw-light greywater flow in an improved constructed wetland (CW) system. Physicochemical analysis and high-throughput DNA sequencing were performed in the different zones to investigate the environmental conditions and microbial communities. The results showed that the system operated predominantly under anaerobic conditions, with redox potential (Eh) increasing from the inlet (-342.9 mV) to the outlet (-316.4 mV). Conversely, the chemical oxygen demand (COD) decreased along the greywater flow, suggesting negative correlation between these characteristics. The zones of the evapotranspiration and treatment tank (CEvaT) were characterized by lower community diversity and richness and by the presence of specific groups: Proteobacteria and Synergistetes related to the first steps of the conversion of organic carbon, in the bottom layer inside the anaerobic chamber (AnC); methanogens (Methanosaeta and Methanobacterium) and sulphate-reducing bacteria (Desulfovibrio, Desulforhabdus and Desulfomonile) in the middle layer; and microorganisms associated with the nitrogen cycle and oxygen release (Acinetobacter, Novosphingobium, Candidatus Nitrososphaera) in the top layer. On the other hand, the increase of the ORP and decrease of organic matter concentrations were associated with higher community diversity and richness in the middle layer of the CW, which showed higher abundance of microorganisms involved in methane (Methylobacterium and Candidatus Koribacter) and sulphur (Rhodoblastus and Thiobacillus) oxidation.

ABSTRACT

The Dendrocephalus brasiliensis, a native species from South America, is a freshwater crustacean well explored in conservational and productive activities. Its main characteristics are its rusticity and resistance cysts production, in which the hatching requires a period of dehydration. Independent of the species utilization nature, it is essential to manipulate its cysts, such as the counting using microscopes. Manually counting is a difficult task, prone to errors, and that also very time-consuming. In this paper, we propose an automatized approach for the detection and counting of Dendrocephalus brasiliensis cysts from images captured by a digital microscope. For this purpose, we built the DBrasiliensis dataset, a repository with 246 images containing 5141 cysts of Dendrocephalus brasiliensis. Then, we trained two state-of-the-art object detection methods, YOLOv3 (You Only Look Once) and Faster R-CNN (Region-based Convolutional Neural Networks), on DBrasiliensis dataset in order to compare them under both cyst detection and counting tasks. Experiments showed evidence that YOLOv3 is superior to Faster R-CNN, achieving an accuracy rate of 83,74%, R2 of 0.88, RMSE (Root Mean Square Error) of 3.49, and MAE (Mean Absolute Error) of 2.24 on cyst detection and counting. Moreover, we showed that is possible to infer the number of cysts of a substrate, with known weight, by performing the automated counting of some of its samples. In conclusion, the proposed approach using YOLOv3 is adequate to detect and count Dendrocephalus brasiliensis cysts. ABSTRACT

RESUMO A bacia hidrográfica do córrego Água Boa (Dourados, MS) sofre grande influência antrópica, tais como urbana e industrial. Levando-se em consideração sua importância para a manutenção de fauna, flora, indústria e população local, o estudo teve como objetivo avaliar a toxicidade de suas águas nos períodos seco e chuvoso de 2013, da nascente até próximo à sua foz, por meio de testes de toxicidade aguda com D. similis e D. rerio, além de análises físicas, químicas e de concentrações de metais pesados. Os resultados mostraram as variabilidades espacial e temporal dos parâmetros analisados. Além disso, constatou-se efeito tóxico no ponto 02 para D. rerio em ambos os períodos. As análises comprovaram a crítica situação de degradação do ambiente aquático estudado e alertam para os cuidados que deverão ser tomados. Portanto, sugere-se maior fiscalização por parte dos órgãos ambientais, bem como conscientização da população quanto às emissões de efluentes e resíduos no corpo hídrico, a fim de evitar sua degradação.


ABSTRACT The watershed of Água Boa Stream (Dourados/MS) suffers great anthropic influence, such as urban and industrial. Taking into consideration its importance for maintenance of fauna, flora, industry and local population, this study aimed to: assess the toxicity of its waters during the dry and rainy seasons of 2013, near the source to its mouth, through acute toxicity essays with D. similis and D. rerio, as well as physical, chemical and heavy metal concentration analyses. The results showed spatial and temporal variability of the analyzed parameters. Furthermore, a toxic effect was found at point 02 for D. rerio in both periods. The analyses confirmed the critical situation of degradation of the aquatic environment studied, and warns that precautions should be taken. Therefore, it is suggested that greater supervision by environmental agencies, as well as public awareness of the issue of waste and residues in the water body, in order to avoid its degradation.

ABSTRACT

The occurrence of the freshwater jellyfish Craspedacusta sowerbii (=sowerbyi) Lankester, 1880 was recorded in April 2006 in the Lagoa Misteriosa water body, a calcareous lake (doline) in Mato Grosso do Sul State, Brazil. Only Rotifera composed the zooplankton community was composed only of Rotifera and the environment was meso-eutrophic system. The nomenclature of C. sowerbii is discussed with regard to the use of the correct spelling and an alternative one. The distributions of C. sowerbii in Brazil include eight states and in South America the distribution includes four countries.


A ocorrência da água-viva de água doce Craspedacusta sowerbii (=sowerbyi) Lankester, 1880 foi registrada em abril de 2006, na lagoa Misteriosa, um lago calcário (dolina) no estado do Mato Grosso do Sul, Brasil. A comunidade zooplanctônica foi composta apenas por Rotifera e a qualidade da água do sistema apresentou uma classificação de meso-eutrófico. A nomenclatura foi discutida quanto às formas usuais de grafia do nome e proposta uma alternativa. A distribuição da C. sowerbii no Brasil inclui oito estados e na América do Sul a distribuição apontou quatro países onde a espécie foi registrada.
