ABSTRACT

This systematic review aimed to compare the Erich arch bars (EABs) with intermaxillary fixation (IMF) screws in maxillofacial fractures involving dental occlusion on perioperative parameters. Four electronic databases were searched: MedLine (Pubmed), Web of Science, VHL, and Cochrane Library. Inclusion criteria comprised clinical trials comparing the two IMF methods, assessing at least one of the outcomes: occlusal stability, oral hygiene, quality of life, time to apply and remove IMF appliances, and complications. Risk of bias was evaluated through the Cochrane risk of bias tool. Fifteen papers were included in the qualitative analysis and 12 of those in the meta-analysis. Times for EABs application (mean difference (MD) 46.83; 95% confidence interval (CI): 30.63-63.02) and removal (MD 22.89; 95% CI 14.61-31.17) were longer compared with IMF screws. There is higher risk of glove perforation (risk ratio (RR) 3.81; 95% CI 2.41-6.04) and lower risk of iatrogenic injuries (RR 0.21; 95% CI 0.09-0.48) when placing EABs compared with IMF screws. No significant differences in plaque index were found (MD 1.07; 95% CI -0.17 to 2.31). The quality of this evidence ranged from very low to low and was mainly compromised by risk of bias assessment. Further studies are necessary to evaluate transurgical IMF stability and postoperative occlusal quality and quality of life when comparing EABs with IMF screws.

ABSTRACT

Magellanic penguin is medium-sized seabird originated from southern hemisphere with colonies near Patagonia. At certain times of the year in Brazilian coast, a few penguins lose their hunting routes and can´t return because they are very sick. Thirty-four penguins died in Espírito Santo´s coast. This study analyzed the cardiac morphology and morph metric of heart chambers and walls, valves, and arteries of the cardiac base. These parts were analysed and stained by Hematoxilin and eosin and Gomori´s trichrome. Mainly targeting the collagen´s composition in each described part the Picru-sirius Red´s stain under polarized light was used. Among thirty-four penguin hearts, none presented discrepancy in morphology, they were all very similar. The characterization of collagen by Picrusirius Red stain highlighted type 1 collagen in comparison to type 3 collagen in most structures, giving a more reddish appearance in almost of them. In conclusion, the cardiac anatomy of the Magellanic Penguin is similar to that of other birds, with a predominance of type I collagen.(AU)

ABSTRACT

A 5-year-old dog with chronic ascites was submitted to several clinical exams, which were inconclusive. Laparotomy revealed abdominal serosanguinous fluid and multiple nodules of several sizes with irregular surface, with visceral and parietal adhesion to the peritoneum, resembling malignant neoplasia. Euthanasia followed by necropsy and collection of samples to histopathological diagnosis was performed. Pathological exam revealed sessile nodules resistant to cut and the microscopy evaluation showed fibrous connective tissue and trabecular bone with sponge bone arrangement associated with active osteoclasts. The definitive diagnosis was sclerosing encapsulating peritonitis.(AU)

ABSTRACT

Protein electrophoresis is a relatively simple technique that allows separating serum protein fractions, and provides important information in the investigation and diagnosis of several diseases. This study determined the levels of acute-phase proteins in the serum of healthy, captive emus (Dromaius novaehollandiae). Animals were divided into two groups (n=11 in each) based on age, with 1-year-old and 4-year-old emus. Acute-phase proteins were separated by SDS-PAGE. Ceruloplasmin, transferrin, albumin, haptoglobin, acidic glycoprotein, IgA, and IgG were detected in the serum of all animals. Protein profiles varied significantly with age (P<0.05). Individuals in the 4-year-old emus group had higher values of ceruloplasmin, transferrin, albumin, haptoglobin, and acidic glycoprotein, compared with the group with 1-year-old animals, showing the role of age in the protein profile of this species. Reference values for acute-phase proteins in healthy emus may be useful in the evaluation of health status and in the diagnosis of diseases affecting the species.(AU)

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT The papillomatosis is a disease of chronic nature and can cause epithelial and mucosa tumors. . It may affect any gender, race or age but is most common in young animals. The papillary lesions occur mainly on the oral mucosa, in the lips, tongue and pharynx, besides appearing also in the eeyes and skin. This study aimed to report the effectiveness of the Thuya occidentalis CH12 , a homeopathic medication commonly used in the treatment of dogs with papillomatosis . The positive results could be noticed, in some cases, even in the first week of treatment , or after twenty days, with the total remission of the lesions occurring in most of the cases within fifteen days . Founded based on the similarity principle, the homeopathy relies on the experimental observation that any substance capable of causing certain symptoms in a healthy person can cure these same symptoms in a sick person. The Thuya occidentalis proved to be effective against canine papillomavirus lesions, and with fast results at an affordable economic value.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Preeclampsia is a public health problem which may manifest as pre-eclampsia (hypertension, proteinuria and/or edema) and eclampsia (convulsive crises and rarely coma in pregnant women with previous pre-eclampsia). But the pathology of hypertensive disease of pregnancy can present different clinical forms. Within that spectrum is HELLP syndrome: hemolysis (H), elevated liver enzymes (EL) and thrombocytopenia (LP). OBJECTIVES: To assess the diagnostic criteria in the literature adopted for HELLP syndrome. METHODS: A literature review on the Virtual Health Library with the keywords "HELLP syndrome" and "diagnosis" found 674 citations. Six hundred and thirty-four dismissed for failing to engage with the proposed question, and 43 articles remained. Twenty seven articles were excluded because of the language, unable in Latin America, letters, case report and articles published prior to 1999. Sixteen original articles were included. Eleven reviews, one prospective study, two cohorts, one retrospective cohort study and a cross. Studies were classified according to degree of recommendation and level of evidence. RESULTS: The term clinical and laboratory markers were varied and their cut-off levels differ among the authors. The appearance of eclampsia, pain in the upper abdomen, nausea and significant proteinuria and other maternal morbidities were more frequent in patients with HELLP syndrome. The levels of lactic dehydrogenase, AST, and uric acid were further elevated in women with HELLP syndrome guarding correlation with the prognosis of the case. There is no consensus for the interpretation of laboratory values that may represent the most widespread occurrence of parameters: hemolytic anemia, elevated liver enzymes and thrombocytopenia. Other morbidities may have clinical signs, symptoms and laboratory abnormalities that mimic the syndrome. CONCLUSION: There are many questions to establish standard diagnostic criteria for all patients with HELLP syndrome, necessitating studies consistent with significant population numbers to establish the main signs and symptoms and try to reach consensus on the best markers for the diagnosis and its proper indexes cutting.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To assess risk factors associated with low bone mineral density (BMD) in postmenopausal women. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, a total of 412 Brazilian postmenopausal women, aged 40-75 years, with BMD measured using central dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, were included. The clinical risk factors assessed were: age, time since menopause, smoking, physical activity, use of hormone therapy (HT) or corticosteroids, personal fracture history, maternal history of fracture, and body mass index (BMI, weight/height(2)). Low BMD was considered when total spine and/or femoral neck T-score values were ≤ -2.0 standard deviations. Logistic regression was used to determine the odds ratio (OR) for low BMD in the presence of the influential variables analyzed. RESULTS: Low BMD, which occurred in 36.6% (151/412) of the participants, was observed in 22.4% of women aged 40-49 years, in 34.2% of those aged 50-59 years, and in 60.5% of those > 60 years (p < 0.001). Similarly, low BMD was observed in 21.9% of women with menopause duration ≤ 5 years, in 39.5% with a duration of 6-10 years, and in 57.7% with menopause duration of > 10 years (p < 0.001). Seventy percent of women with BMI < 20 kg/m(2) were osteopenic/osteoporotic (p < 0.001). The percentage of HT users was 37.4%; 27.7% took regular physical activity and 24.5% were smokers. The risk for low BMD detection increased significantly with age (OR 1.08; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.02-1.14), time since menopause (OR 1.12; 95% CI 1.04-1.20), smoking (OR 3.43; 95% CI 1.67-6.96), fracture history (OR 2.05; 95% CI 1.11-3.78), and maternal history of fracture (OR 2.16; 95% CI 1.14-4.09). Physical activity, diet, corticotherapy and thyropathies did not influence risk. Contrarily, use of HT (OR 0.38; 95% CI 0.24-0.60) and high BMI (OR 0.89; 95% CI 0.84-0.96) reduced risk (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: In postmenopausal women, age, time since menopause, smoking, and personal or maternal history of fracture were strong clinical indicators of risk for low BMD, whereas the use of hormone therapy and high BMI were shown to be protective factors.

ABSTRACT

Samples from intestines, liver, and lymph nodes were collected from a dairy steer with clinical suspicion of paratuberculosis. The samples were processed for histologic examination with hematoxylin-eosin and Zihel-Neelsen (ZN) staining for the detection of acid-fast bacilli (AFB), and submitted to immunohistochemistry (IHC). Macroscopic changes were observed in the small intestines, with thickening and corrugation of the mucosa. The main microscopic changes were found in small intestines, lymph vessels in the mesentery, and mesenteric lymph nodes characterized by enteritis, lymphangiectasia, and lymphadenitis. Liver presented with granulomatous hepatitis, an uncommon histopathological feature for paratuberculosis. The clinical features associated with positive culture of Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis and detection of AFB by ZN and IHC in the cytoplasm of macrophages (epithelioid) in the intestinal mucosa and submucosa, lymph nodes, and liver were important to confirm the diagnosis of paratuberculosis.

ABSTRACT

This study was aimed at assessing university students' awareness and opinions about aspects of the law no. 10.221/01. This exploratory study was performed among students at the São Paulo Federal University-UNIFESP, from 2001 to July 2002, including 1284 undergraduates in the following courses: nursing, medicine, speech and language therapy, biomedicine, and ophthalmic technology. That data show that 47.7% (333) of undergraduates are aware of the kind of donation established by the new law. Among the adolescents of first and second grades, and courses, there was a difference on the awareness about the kind of donation (P =.000). Most undergraduates (57.6%, 402) agree with consented donation. However, the high percentage--35.1% (245)--that chose the alternative "I don't know" is remarkable. Results show that many undergraduates are unaware of the specifications of the technical files for transplants; only 48.3% (337) of them chose the correct answer, and 79.4% (554) do not believe that the order in the waiting list for transplants is respected. The conclusion is that it is worth emphasizing is that there are different opinions and levels of awareness among students, considering age, religion and religious practice, and course and level at school. In spite of unawareness and lack of belief in the principles of distribution of organs and tissue, most students are willing to be donors (68.2%).

ABSTRACT

Dermatophytoses are superficial infections that may lead to lesions of keratinized tissues, like skin, hair and nails. A total of 6068 individuals from Goiânia, GO, with suspected dermatophytic lesions were examined over a period of five years (1993-1997) in order to determine the incidence and etiology of dermatophytosis. Material collected from different body parts was submitted to direct microscopic examination using KOH, cultured in Sabouraud agar and microscopically examined for colony morphology, with the identification of 1595 dermatophytes. Trichophyton rubrum (37.4%), T. mentagrophytes (36.4%) and Microsporum canis (16%) were the species most frequently isolated. Dermatophytes were more frequently found producing lesions in the feet (30.5%), inguinal and crural regions (17.8%) and glabrous body regions (15.5%). The distribution of the different infected body sites was determined in terms of the respective etiologic agents found. Better hygiene conditions and an early diagnosis are the most important tools to control and reduce the incidence of dermatophytosis in Goiânia, GO.
