ABSTRACT

Curcumin and omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (ω-3 PUFA) are multifunctional compounds which play an important role in Alzheimer's disease (AD) and little has been addressed about the role of these two compounds together in the progression of the disease. There is evidence of the beneficial effect of combined administration of ω-3 PUFA and other dietary supplements such as vitamins and polyphenols in the prevention of AD, although much remains to be understood about their possible complementary or synergistic activity. Therefore, the objective of this work is to review the research focused on studying the effect and mechanisms of action of curcumin, ω-3 PUFA, and the combination of these nutraceutical compounds, particularly on AD, and to integrate the possible ways in which these compounds can potentiate their effect. The most important pathophysiologies that manifest in AD will be addressed, in order to have a better understanding of the mechanisms of action through which these bioactive compounds exert a neuroprotective effect.

ABSTRACT

This study explores the potential of zeolite as an amendment to mitigate ammonium inhibition in the anaerobic digestion of swine waste. Two 50 L reactors, one with and one without zeolite amendment were operated at an OLR of 3.0 g VS L-1d-1 for 130 days, and fed with swine waste from a full-scale pig farm. Under these conditions, zeolite doses of 4 g L-1 allowed total ammonia nitrogen (TAN) concentrations to be kept below 1000 mgNH3-N L-1. The zeolite-amended reactor not only showed an average increase of 8% in methane production under stable conditions but also exhibited 34% reduction in H2S concentrations in the biogas, compared to the reactor without zeolite. The community of archaea originating from the inoculum was conserved in the reactor with zeolite amendment, particularly the acetoclastic methanogens of the genus Methanosaeta. On the other hand, in the reactor without zeolite addition, the microbial community went from being dominated by the acetoclastic methanogen Methanosaeta to having a high relative abundance of hydrogenotrophic methanogens. The zeolite addition also favoured the reactor stability, prevented foaming, and produced an enriched natural zeolite with N, P and K. However, additional studies on the potential of enriched zeolite as a fertilizer are required, which could make the use of zeolite in Anaerobic Digestion of swine waste not only energetically favourable but also economically feasible.

Introducción: la calidad de vida relacionada con la salud bucal es un tema relevante que involucra la relación de la odontología con las enfermedades crónicas no transmisibles como la diabetes, dada su relación bidireccional. En este trabajo se resalta la importancia de revisar el impacto que generan las alteraciones periodontales en la calidad de vida de pacientes diabéticos. El objetivo de este estudio fue establecer la calidad de vida relacionada con el estado periodontal en pacientes diabéticos pertenecientes al régimen subsidiado de Manizales. Métodos: se observaron 90 adultos diabéticos pertenecientes al programa de diabetes del régimen subsidiado mediante entrevista estructurada, aplicación del instrumento OHIP-14 (Perfil de Impacto de la Salud Oral en la Calidad de Vida) y observación directa del estado periodontal, con el fin establecer el índice de extensión y severidad periodontal, descripción del índice OHIP-14, establecer su relación con variables sociodemográficas y con el estado de salud periodontal. Resultados: se encontró una prevalencia de impacto según el OHIP-14 del 44,4%, extensión del impacto con un promedio de 1,58 (IC: 1,0-2,1) y una severidad del impacto de 6,7 (IC: 6,2-7,8). Al consolidar los resultados del OHIP-14 por dimensión, se observó que el mayor impacto correspondió a la dimensión de dolor físico, con un porcentaje del 81,1%. El menor porcentaje se presentó en las dimensiones de Incapacidad Social y Discapacidad o Minusvalía con un 34,4%. Conclusiones: aunque en la población estudiada, la presencia de enfermedad periodontal ejerció pobre impacto en calidad de vida, éste fue mayor en las dimensiones de impacto de dolor físico y malestar psicológico.


Introduction: quality of life related to oral health is a relevant topic that involves the relationship of dentistry with chronic noncommunicable diseases such as diabetes, given its bidirectional relationship. This study emphasizes the importance of reviewing the impact of periodontal alterations on the quality of life of diabetic patients. The objective of this study was to establish the quality of life related to periodontal status in diabetic patients belonging to the subsidized regime of Manizales. Methods: 90 diabetic adults belonging to the diabetes program of the subsidized regime were observed by means of a structured interview, application of the OHIP-14 instrument (Oral Health Impact Profile on Quality of Life) and direct observation of periodontal status, to establish the index of periodontal extension and severity, description of the OHIP-14 index, establish its relationship with sociodemographic variables and with periodontal health status. Results: we found a prevalence of impaction according to OHIP-14 of 44.4%, extent of impaction with an average of 1.58 (CI: 1.0-2.1) and severity of impaction of 6.7 (CI: 6.2-7.8). When consolidating the OHIP-14 results by dimension, it was observed that the greatest impact corresponded to the physical pain dimension, with a percentage of 81.1%. The lowest percentage was presented in the dimensions of Social Incapacity and Disability or Handicap with 34.4%. Conclusions: although in the population studied, the presence of periodontal disease had a poor impact on quality of life, this was greater in the dimensions of physical pain and psychological discomfort.

BACKGROUND: Postinfectious bronchiolitis obliterans is a rare lung disease; there are limited reports in South America. CASE REPORT: We report 10 patients with this disease diagnosed at the Instituto Nacional de Salud del Niño-Breña (Lima-Peru). The median age at diagnosis was 19 months and all patients had a history of severe acute respiratory infection. The most frequent symptoms were cough, respiratory distress, wheezing, and hypoxemia. The mosaic attenuation pattern was the most frequent on the tomography. All the patients had positive serology for adenovirus. The treatment received was methylprednisolone pulses, azithromycin, hydroxychloroquine, and inhaled corticosteroids. No patient died during the follow-up. CONCLUSIONS: In previously healthy children with a history of severe acute respiratory infection and persistent bronchial obstructive symptoms, the diagnosis of postinfectious bronchiolitis obliterans should be considered. This is the first report in Peru with a therapeutic regimen adapted to our institution.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: Although public efforts to reduce tobacco use have been successful, millions of US adults currently smoke tobacco. Reducing the public health burden of tobacco use disorder (TUD) and eliminating disparities experienced by underresourced communities requires increased accessibility to services. The goal of this study was to assess whether prescriptions for evidence-based medications for tobacco treatment showed steeper growth rates among community health clinics providing specialty TUD services as compared with treatment as usual. METHODS: Clinic-wide data on prescriptions for smoking cessation pharmacotherapy at 18 primary care or mental health community clinics operated by Los Angeles County were retrieved for 4 years of an ongoing implementation trial. Specialty services included behavioral counseling and medications for tobacco treatment. Descriptive statistics characterized prescriptions rates across clinics and time. Analyses compared the slopes of the changes between intervention groups across time for primary care and mental health sites. RESULTS: Within primary care clinics, the most commonly prescribed smoking cessation medications were nicotine patches, nicotine gum, and varenicline. Throughout the trial, all clinics displayed increased rates of prescribing smoking cessation medications. Analytic results supported overall steeper increases in prescription rates for these medications among clinics randomized to specialty services versus treatment as usual within primary care ( P = 0.020) and mental health sites ( P = 0.004). CONCLUSIONS: This work provides support for the effectiveness of community-based implementation interventions that promote prescribing smoking cessation medications with the potential to reduce health disparities among communities at greater risk for TUD and its consequences.

ABSTRACT

We designed a controlled trial protocol that seeks to contribute to cognitive science by studying the effect of thought training on children's executive functions. The study design is a cluster randomized controlled trial, with intra-subject and inter-subject evaluation, with two parallel groups: an experimental group and a TAU control group. With three measures, pre-test, post-test, and follow-up after three months. The participants will be children aged 9 to 11. The allocation will be randomized by groups and not individually. The sample will be a minimum of 44 participants. The primary measures will be neuropsychological tests to assess executive functions. Secondary measures will be a computational thinking test, neuropsychological tests to assess metacognition and attention, and an acceptability scale. The experimental group will participate in the COGNI-MACHINE computational thinking training designed by the first author. The training frequency will be twice a week in 60 min sessions for 12 weeks. The TAU control group will receive computer science classes as usual during the same time as the experimental group. The evaluators taking the measurements will be blinded to the assignment. The investigators in charge of the intervention will be blinded to the results of the evaluations.

ABSTRACT

Attrition is high among surgical trainees, and six of ten trainees consider leaving their programs, with two ultimately leaving before completion of training. Given known historically and systemically rooted biases, Black surgical trainees are at high risk of attrition during residency training. With only 4.5% of all surgical trainees identifying as Black, underrepresentation among their peers can lend to misclassification of failure to assimilate as clinical incompetence. Furthermore, the disproportionate impact of ongoing socioeconomic crisis (e.g., COVID-19 pandemic, police brutality etc.) on Black trainees and their families confers additional challenges that may exacerbate attrition rates. Thus, attrition is a significant threat to medical workforce diversity and health equity. There is urgent need for surgical programs to develop proactive approaches to address attrition and the threat to the surgical workforce. In this Society of Black Academic Surgeons (SBAS) white paper, we provide a framework that promotes an open and inclusive environment conducive to the retention of Black surgical trainees, and continued progress towards attainment of health equity for racial and ethnic minorities in the United States.

ABSTRACT

Anthropogenic and natural sources contribute to chemical mixtures in air, water, and soil, posing potential risks to the environment and human health. To understand the interplay between element profiles in the human body, geographical location, and associated economic activities, we carried out an observational analytic cross-sectional study. The study recruited 199 participants from three municipalities, two of which had gold-mining as their primary economic activity, while the other was dedicated to agricultural and other local activities not related to mining. The concentrations of a total of 30 elements in human hair samples and 21 elements in environmental soil samples were measured using various spectrometry techniques. Unsupervised clustering analysis using Self-Organizing Maps was applied to human hair samples to analyze element concentrations. Distinct clusters of individuals were identified based on their hair element profiles, which were mapped to geographical location and economic activities. While higher levels of heavy metals (Ag, As, Hg, and Pb) were observed in individuals engaged in mining activities in certain clusters, individuals in agricultural areas show higher concentrations of elements found in pesticides (Ba and Sr). However, the elemental composition of hair is influenced not only by the anthropogenic activities but also by the inherent geological context where people live. Our findings highlight the significance of accounting for environmental factors when evaluating human health risks, as the intricate mixture of elements can yield valuable insights for targeted health interventions.

ABSTRACT

Anaerobic digestion (AD) of swine waste allows obtaining renewable energy, biofertilizer and the reduction of environmental impacts. However, the low C:N ratio of pig manure generates high concentrations of ammonia nitrogen in the digestion process, reducing methane production. Zeolite is an effective ammonia adsorbent; thus, in this research the ammonia adsorption capacity of natural Ecuadorian zeolite was studied under different operating conditions. Subsequently, its effect on methane production from swine waste was evaluated using three doses of zeolite, 1.0, 4.0 and 8.0 g, in 1 L batch bioreactors. The results showed that the Ecuadorian natural zeolite has an adsorption capacity of around 19 mgNH3-N gZ-1 when using ammonium chloride solution and, an adsorption capacity between 37 and 65 mgNH3-N gZ-1 using swine waste. On the other hand, the addition of zeolite had a significant effect on methane production (p < 0.01). The zeolite doses that provided the highest methane production were 4.0 and 8.0 g L-1, which led to values of 0.375 and 0.365 Nm3CH4 kgVS-1, compared to the values of 0.350 and 0.343 Nm3CH4 kgVS-1 that were obtained for the treatments without addition of zeolite and using a dose of 1.0 g L-1, respectively. Addition of natural Ecuadorian zeolite meant not only a significant increase on methane production in the AD of swine waste, but also a better quality of the biogas with higher percentages of methane and lower concentrations of H2S.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To assess whether MUC1 peptide vaccine produces an immune response and prevents subsequent colon adenoma formation. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Multicenter, double-blind, placebo-controlled randomized trial in individuals age 40 to 70 with diagnosis of an advanced adenoma ≤1 year from randomization. Vaccine was administered at 0, 2, and 10 weeks with a booster injection at week 53. Adenoma recurrence was assessed ≥1 year from randomization. The primary endpoint was vaccine immunogenicity at 12 weeks defined by anti-MUC1 ratio ≥2.0. RESULTS: Fifty-three participants received the MUC1 vaccine and 50 placebo. Thirteen of 52 (25%) MUC1 vaccine recipients had a ≥2-fold increase in MUC1 IgG (range, 2.9-17.3) at week 12 versus 0/50 placebo recipients (one-sided Fisher exact P < 0.0001). Of 13 responders at week 12, 11 (84.6%) responded to a booster injection at week 52 with a ≥2-fold increase in MUC1 IgG measured at week 55. Recurrent adenoma was observed in 31 of 47 (66.0%) in the placebo group versus 27 of 48 (56.3%) in the MUC1 group [adjusted relative risk (aRR), 0.83; 95% confidence interval (CI), 0.60-1.14; P = 0.25]. Adenoma recurrence occurred in 3/11 (27.3%) immune responders at week 12 and week 55 (aRR, 0.41; 95% CI, 0.15-1.11; P = 0.08 compared with placebo). There was no difference in serious adverse events. CONCLUSIONS: An immune response was observed only in vaccine recipients. Adenoma recurrence was not different than placebo, but a 38% absolute reduction in adenoma recurrence compared with placebo was observed in participants who had an immune response at week 12 and with the booster injection.

The exposure to chemical mixtures is a problem of concern in developing countries and it is well known that the kidney is the major target organ for toxic elements. This cross-sectional study aimed to estimate the individual and composite mixture effect of a large number of chemical elements on kidney function in gold-mining and surrounding non-mining populations in northeast Colombia. We measured concentrations of 36 chemical elements in hair as indicators of chronic exposure from 199 adult participants. We estimated the effect of exposure to mixtures of chemical elements on estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) using weighted quantile sum regression (WQS). The WQS index of the mixture was associated with reduced eGFR (Coefficient -2.42; 95%CI: -4.69, -0.16) being Be, Cd, Pb, As, and Mn, the principal contributors of the toxic mixture. Mining activities and Hg concentration were not associated with decreased kidney function. Our results suggest that complex mixtures of chemical elements, mainly heavy metals, act as nephrotoxic in these populations and therefore the analysis of chemical element mixtures is a better approach to identify environmental and occupational chemical risks for kidney damage.

ABSTRACT

IMPORTANCE: Patients with familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) are at markedly increased risk for duodenal adenomas and cancer. Combination sulindac and erlotinib was previously shown to reduce duodenal polyp burden but was associated with a relatively high adverse event (AE) rate. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate if a once weekly dosing schedule for erlotinib intervention improves the AE profile, while still providing efficacy with respect to reduced polyp burden, in participants with FAP. DESIGN, SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: Single-arm trial, enrolling 46 participants with FAP, conducted from October 2017 to September 2019 in eight academic cancer centres. EXPOSURES: Participants self-administered 350 mg of erlotinib by mouth, one time per week for 6 months. MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES: Duodenal polyp burden (sum of polyp diameters) was assessed in the proximal duodenum by esophagogastroduodenoscopy performed at baseline and 6 months, with mean per cent change defined as the primary efficacy outcome of interest. Rate of grade 2-3 AEs was evaluated as a co-primary outcome. Secondary outcomes included changes in total duodenal polyp count, along with changes in lower gastrointestinal (GI) polyp burden and count (for participants examined by optional lower endoscopy). RESULTS: Forty-six participants (mean age, 44.1 years (range, 18-68); women, 22 (48%)) were enrolled; 42 participants completed 6 months of intervention and were included in the per-protocol analysis. Duodenal polyp burden was significantly reduced after 6 months of weekly erlotinib intervention, with a mean per cent change of -29.6% (95% CI, -39.6% to -19.7%; p<0.0001). Similar results were observed in subgroup analyses defined by participants with advanced duodenal polyposis (Spigelman 3) at baseline (mean, -27%; 95% CI, -38.7% to -15.2%; p<0.0001). Post-intervention Spigelman stage was downstaged in 12% of the participants. Lower GI polyp number was also decreased after 6 months of intervention (median, -30.8%; IQR, -47.4% to 0.0%; p=0.0256). Grade 2 or 3 AEs were reported in 71.7% of subjects, with only two experiencing grade 3 toxicity at least possibly related to intervention. CONCLUSION: In this single-arm, multi-centre trial of participants with FAP, erlotinib one time per week resulted in markedly lower duodenal polyp burden, and modestly reduced lower GI polyp burden, after 6 months of intervention. While AEs were still reported by nearly three-quarters of all participants, these events were generally lower grade and well-tolerated. These findings support further investigation of erlotinib as an effective, acceptable cancer preventive agent for FAP-associated GI polyposis. TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER: NCT02961374.

Chronic hepatitis C can lead to cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. We studied the safety and immunogenicity of a novel therapeutic hepatitis C virus (HCV) genotype 1a/1b consensus DNA vaccine, INO-8000, encoding HCV NS3, NS4A, NS4B, and NS5A proteins alone or co-administered with DNA-encoding IL12 (INO-9012), a human cytokine that stimulates cellular immune function, in individuals with chronic hepatitis C. This was a phase I, multisite dose-escalation trial with an expansion cohort evaluating doses of 0, 0.3, 1.0, and 3.0 mg of INO-9012 (IL12 DNA) as an addition to 6.0 mg of (INO-8000; HCV DNA vaccine). Vaccines were administered by intramuscular injection followed by electroporation at study entry and at weeks 4, 12, and 24. HCV-specific CD4+ and CD8+ T-cell immune responses were measured by IFNγ ELISpot and flow cytometry-based assays. Transient, mild-to-moderate injection site reactions unrelated to IL12 DNA dose were common. Increases in HCV-specific IFNγ production occurred in 15/20 (75%) participants. Increases in the frequency of HCV-specific CD4+ and CD8+ T cells occurred at all dose levels, with the greatest increases seen at 1.0 mg of INO-9012. HCV-specific CD8+ and CD4+ T-cell activities increased in 16/18 (89%) and 14/17 (82%) participants with available data, respectively. The vaccine regimen was safe and induced HCV-specific CD4+ and CD8+ cellular immune responses of modest magnitude in most HCV-infected participants. The addition of 1.0 mg of IL12 DNA provided the best enhancement of immune responses. The vaccine regimen had little effect on controlling HCV viremia. PREVENTION RELEVANCE: The administration of IL12 DNA along with a hepatitis C viral antigen DNA vaccine enhanced the HCV-specific immune responses induced by the vaccine in individuals with chronic hepatitis C, an important cause of hepatocellular carcinoma. IL12 could be an effective adjuvant in vaccines targeting HCV and other oncogenic viruses.

Introducción: El síndrome de Evans es un desorden autoinmune poco frecuente, caracterizado por el descenso de al menos dos líneas celulares hemáticas. Las publicaciones del síndrome de Evans e infección por citomegalovirus resultan escasas. Objetivo: Examinar el caso de una niña con síndrome de Evans e infección activa por citomegalovirus que respondió favorablemente a la terapia antiviral. Presentación del caso: Niña de 13 meses con antecedentes de prematuridad y bajo peso al nacer, que acudió a consulta por presentar palidez y equimosis en tórax, abdomen y extremidades. En los exámenes de laboratorio se encontró trombocitopenia y anemia severa con prueba de Coombs directo positiva. Recibió pulsos de metilprednisolona con respuesta desfavorable. La carga viral resultó positiva para citomegalovirus (4019 copias de ADN) y recibió valganciclovir con evolución favorable en el seguimiento. Conclusiones: El síndrome de Evans asociado a infección por CMV es infrecuente. El tratamiento con valganciclovir podría ser beneficioso para cierto grupo de pacientes; sin embargo, hacen falta más estudios que demuestren la eficacia y seguridad de este tratamiento en este síndrome; más aún si está asociado a una elevada carga viral(AU)


Introduction: Evans syndrome is a rare autoimmune disorder, characterized by the descent of at least two blood cell lines. Publications of Evans syndrome and cytomegalovirus infection are scarce. Objective: To examine the case of a girl with Evans syndrome and active cytomegalovirus infection who responded favorably to antiviral therapy. Case presentation: A 13-month-old girl with a history of prematurity and low birth weight, who attended the consultation for presenting pallor and ecchymosis in the thorax, abdomen and extremities. Laboratory tests found thrombocytopenia and severe anemia after a positive direct Coombs test. She received pulses of methylprednisolone with unfavorable response. The viral load was positive for cytomegalovirus (4019 copies of DNA) and received valganciclovir with favorable evolution at follow-up. Conclusions: Evans syndrome associated with CMV infection is uncommon. Treatment with valganciclovir may be beneficial for a certain group of patients. However, more studies are needed to demonstrate the efficacy and safety of this treatment in this syndrome; even more so if it is associated with a high viral load(AU)

ABSTRACT

Given the lack of publications and public policies addressing the relationship between climate change and cancer care in Colombia, we present an exploration of the perspectives and communication practices of a group of nurses from Valle del Cauca and Antioquia. We provide a context based on the available literature on climate change and general health then provide an overview of cancer in the country. Next, we present how oncology nurses have incorporated information about strategies their patients can use to mitigate the effects of climate change on their health. We highlight the centrality of patient-centered communication using a framework from the US National Cancer Institute) and the fundamental role nurses have in patients' experiences throughout their treatment. We conclude with the need to investigate oncology nurse communication practices in other Colombian hospitals, with consideration of culture, cancer stigma, barriers to care and other factors that may influence successful climate change mitigation and to better understand how other Latin American oncology nurses are addressing this serious challenge.

ABSTRACT

The environmental deterioration produced by heavy metals derived from anthropogenic activities has gradually increased. The worldwide dissemination of toxic metals in crop soils represents a threat for sustainability and biosafety in agriculture and requires strategies for the recovery of metal-polluted crop soils. The biorestoration of metal-polluted soils using technologies that combine plants and microorganisms has gained attention in recent decades due to the beneficial and synergistic effects produced by its biotic interactions. In this context, native and heavy metal-resistant plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) play a crucial role in the development of strategies for sustainable biorestoration of metal-contaminated soils. In this study, we present a genomic analysis and characterization of the rhizospheric bacterium Bacillus megaterium HgT21 isolated from metal-polluted soil from Zacatecas, Mexico. The results reveal that this autochthonous bacterium contains an important set of genes related to a variety of operons associated with mercury, arsenic, copper, cobalt, cadmium, zinc and aluminum resistance. Additionally, halotolerance-, beta-lactam resistance-, phosphate solubilization-, and plant growth-promotion-related genes were identified. The analysis of resistance to metal ions revealed resistance to mercury (HgII+), arsenate [AsO4]³-, cobalt (Co2+), zinc (Zn2+), and copper (Cu2+). Moreover, the ability of the HgT21 strain to produce indole acetic acid (a phytohormone) and promote the growth of Arabidopsis thaliana seedlings in vitro was also demonstrated. The genotype and phenotype of Bacillus megaterium HgT21 reveal its potential to be used as a model of both plant growth-promoting and metal multiresistant bacteria. IMPORTANCE Metal-polluted environments are natural sources of a wide variety of PGPB adapted to cope with toxic metal concentrations. In this work, the bacterial strain Bacillus megaterium HgT21 was isolated from metal-contaminated soil and is proposed as a model for the study of metal multiresistance in spore-forming Gram-positive bacteria due to the presence of a variety of metal resistance-associated genes similar to those encountered in the metal multiresistant Gram-negative Cupriavidus metallidurans CH34. The ability of B. megaterium HgT21 to promote the growth of plants also makes it suitable for the study of plant-bacteria interactions in metal-polluted environments, which is key for the development of techniques for the biorestoration of metal-contaminated soils used for agriculture.

ABSTRACT

The diversity of microorganisms associated with speleological sources has mainly been studied in limestone caves, while studies in silicate caves are still under development. Here, we profiled the microbial diversity of opal speleothems from a silicate cave in Guiana Highlands. Bulk DNAs were extracted from three speleothems of two types, i.e., one soft whitish mushroom-like speleothem and two hard blackish coral-like speleothems. The extracted DNAs were amplified for sequencing the V3-V4 region of the bacterial 16S rRNA gene by MiSeq. A total of 210,309 valid reads were obtained and clustered into 3184 phylotypes or operational taxonomic units (OTUs). The OTUs from the soft whitish speleothem were mostly affiliated with Acidobacteriota, Pseudomonadota (formerly, Proteobacteria), and Chloroflexota, with the OTUs ascribed to Nitrospirota being found specifically in this speleothem. The OTUs from the hard blackish speleothems were similar to each other and were mostly affiliated with Pseudomonadota, Acidobacteriota, and Actinomycetota (formerly, Actinobacteria). These OTU compositions were generally consistent with those reported for limestone and silicate caves. The OTUs were further used to infer metabolic features by using the PICRUSt bioinformatic tool, and membrane transport and amino acid metabolism were noticeably featured. These and other featured metabolisms may influence the pH microenvironment and, consequently, the formation, weathering, and re-deposition of silicate speleothems.

ABSTRACT

Photosynthesis is a vital process for the planet. Its estimation involves the measurement of different variables and its processing through a mathematical model. This article presents a black-box mathematical model to estimate the net photosynthesis and its digital implementation. The model uses variables such as: leaf temperature, relative leaf humidity, and incident radiation. The model was elaborated with obtained data from Capsicum annuum L. plants and calibrated using genetic algorithms. The model was validated with Capsicum annuum L. and Capsicum chinense Jacq. plants, achieving average errors of 3% in Capsicum annuum L. and 18.4% in Capsicum chinense Jacq. The error in Capsicum chinense Jacq. was due to the different experimental conditions. According to evaluation, all correlation coefficients (Rho) are greater than 0.98, resulting from the comparison with the LI-COR Li-6800 equipment. The digital implementation consists of an FPGA for data acquisition and processing, as well as a Raspberry Pi for IoT and in situ interfaces; thus, generating a useful net photosynthesis device with non-invasive sensors. This proposal presents an innovative, portable, and low-scale way to estimate the photosynthetic process in vivo, in situ, and in vitro, using non-invasive techniques.
